Hong Kong device with a european SIM-card? - Nokia 6 Questions & Answers

Hey everyone!
I have a problem that´s probably a bit stupid. First the facts:
- I bought a TA-1068 from a (as I now know) shady reseller on the Internet (https://www.guterkauf.com.de/de_DE/) - never buy from them...
- I live in Europe
- Problem: The TA-1068 is (as I understand it...) suited for Hong Kong & Taiwan.
- When I now put a european SIM-card into the phone it doesn´t find it and I get a "no SIM-card" error. Everything else works, I can set up a Google account etc. This means I cannot use the phone as it is right now.
My question for you is: Is there a softwarefix for this, or is there no way I can ever use this phone with a european SIM-card?
Nokia already told me they have no way to help me (because it´s a Hong Kong device) and the shady reseller doesn´t admit that the phone is unusable to me and their support sends me in circles.
Kind regards,
Hauke

This is a Nokia 6.1 TA-1068.
Which firmware is your Nokia 6.1 running? Dial *#*#227#*#* and tell me the version displayed.
Also you can test if SIM card contact works by dialing *#*#372733#*#*.

Hello and thanks for answering!
The Version is shown as: PL2-326F-0-00WW-01
And the SIM Card test only shows "Test passed? No" - so i suppose the device has no contact to the SIM card...

Soo...I suppose there is no solution then?

dopod 838 Pro not working with Telstra SIM

Hi,
I am having an absolute nightmare trying to get my brand new 838 to recognise GSM with a Telstra SIM.
It doesn't even ask for a pin, which leads me to think it's not even recognising there's a SIM in there. I can't get into phone setup options and on a very rare occasion (2 out of about 50) it goes to the pin entry on the phone screen and says it's an unrecognised SIM error. So I call telstra because the dopod customer service guys is apparently on hols until the 7th Jan.
First, they told me my old 2G SIM wouldn't work, so off I pop and get a NextG one. No dice..
Then I finally (after15 hours) got an activation for the aussie member's area at dopod and found out you have to put this netwiz.dat in the my documents folder of the device, so I do. No dice..
So I download the ROM update, even though it says the phone is already that version. No dice..
Then, another telstra tecchie says that even though my phone contract is with them, they don't support the handset so they basically don't want a bar of it, but they did tell me that as far as they know, all dopod are locked to 3. I have used the add/remove option to delete the 3 smartphone program from the device but, you guessed it. No dice..
Has anyone else had this problem, or is anyone able to offer some advice? I'm about to throw the damn thing against a wall in frustration.
Thanks
Not much help I know but you are not alone:
Might be something in these?

I've tried flashing the older ROM to bring the bootloader back to 1.04, but I get a vendor error.

Dopod 838pro's bought from 3 stores in australia are locked (via the radio) to the 3 network. removing the '3' apps wont do the trick. therefore it wont recognise any other sim, e.g. telstra, vodafone or optus.
the only Hermes device sold in Australia that is not locked to any network is the Imate JASJAM.
to unlock your dopod 838pro to use with Telstra you will have to (at your own risk) unlock it (see the wiki for info) - but this may void your waranty.
I have tried flashing the ROM with version 23 and also 30 of dopod and also with a jasjam ROM. I keep getting a vendor error, even with the dopod ones.
The phone was purchased from a company called corporate express, not from 3, so I can't see why it should be locked.
Can anyone offer some advice on the flashing issue?

from what I know, dopod 838pro are sold exclusively by 3 Australia (and other licensed resellers in collaboration with 3)
Imate jasjams are sold by telstra (and other licenses resellers such as computer world)
Have you got a friend with a 3 USIM? If so, best is to try to see if your dopod recognises the sim first.
if it doesnt, then there is something else wrong with the device.
In regards to flashing, it all depends on the bootloader you have. if you have 1.04 then you can flash any of the roms. but if you flash a rom with a bootloader 1.06 or higher, then you cannot flash to a rom with a different CID. you might want to CID unlock your device. Please viist the wiki and also visit the STICKY thread in the upgrading section of thes forum which presents a tutorial.
Cheers,
Ronny
Considering you haven't got any sim to work in your phone, perhaps it's faulty?
I know some older GSM sim's wont work in 3g phones. Mine is 2 years old and works fine however. If it's not recognising the sim and giving you a clear error about being locked, I'd suggest you send it back for repair.
I was also told by 3 that the phones are not locked but you must buy them with some kind of contract due to their low price.

This is untrue
I have the Dopod 838 Pro bought from a 3 store and Optus/Virgin Mobile/Vodafone SIMs work perfectly fine
you learn something new everyday.
I have the jasjam that i got throgh telstra, they will always tell you you need a next G sim card even when you dont. i am using a 3 year old sim in it and it works fine
however i dont get UTMS at all (not so bad considering how much it costs)
if i remeber correcttly it had to do with them chaninging voltages about 5 years ago that meant you could fry your sim
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I'm going to try unlocking it with IMEI-check and see how I go. If it still doesn't work, I'm sending it back.
Dunno why you're bothering paying to unlock; you can unlock the DoPod 838 Pro free with pofs tool (as you can downgrade - you're having problems, but you have not tried to fix them?).
The first batch of DoPods delivered to Three were not simlocked, later batches are.

Do you have any information that the later batch are simlocked, or just your assumption? Because my Dopod 838Pro is from the latest batch (with latest firmware) and is unlocked...
It's more likely that all the Dopods, irrespective of which batch they're from, are all not locked to any telco.

I'd be mighty upset if I bought a phone outright from a non three (or any other telco) dealer and it was locked!
I think the reference was to Dopods sold through three...but the point still stands as they seem to be unlocked.

Its my information from someone who owns and runs a Three shop, and is very much in with the developments (i.e. not just a bum who owns a shop, he works with them in a higher level too). Apparently it was a problem with the distro, and they were meant to be locked, and it would be rectified in the second batch shipped to Three.
I too have a dopod 838 from three and it works with all other carriers sims. Maybe the problem is that the dodpod has its band set to umts exclusively and unless you use the registry hack mentioned in the wiki (or by secureGSM) the band tab will not appear to allow changing to other bands. This is a problem for all user's of three because their network is limited and the phone can't go into roaming mode without the band setting modifications.
OdeeanRDeathshead is correct.
the latest Aus 1.30 firmware hides the network bands.
use the reg hack to unhide it and set it to auto and auto.
Thanks for all the feedback folks.
The helpful gents at IMEI-Check inform me that the radio is buggered, which is why nothing will flash and I can't sort the phone out. I'm sending it back to the store for a new one which will hopefully work as designed out of the box.
Will keep you posted.

Cruise with region lock?

I was in HKG few weeks ago and bought 3 mobile phones (HTC Cruise, Sony Erickson S500i and Samsung E528) in a local electronic store, so they should be unlock and unbranded.. All three works perfectly in HKG with local prepaid and contract SIM of different company.
Now lets concentrate on the HTC Cruise after all this is the Polaris forum.
I then went to Malaysia and Thailand, cruise worked with a local SIM without any problem. Now I am back in Germany and cruise works fine with my 10 years old Vodafone prepaid card, but doesn’t work with my one month old Vodafone prepaid card, it display a message saying something like “sim card is missing ….” (sure the sim is in). I called Vodafone but they have no idea and keep sending me a new replacement sim card, I now have 2 replacements but both doesn’t work (works with my old phone though, so SIM has no problem).
I then brought the phone to office and tested with my colleague sim cards, one was contract Vodafone and the other was contract T-COM, again, both doesn’t work.
Are there anything call region lock or something like that? Why it works in Asia but not in Germany? Why the 10 years old Vodafone SIM card is okay but all new SIM not? Actually except the Samsung, SE S500i has exactly the same problem.
I really don’t know what to do now, can someone in here please help me out?
Thanks!

Hello Roman,
Thanks for taking time to read through my problem and ur advise.
The ROM on my cruise are still the original, this is my very first pda phone and therefore am a bit nervous to perform the upgrade, but do u think flashing the rom or radio version would help? I bought this phone because of the gps but sadly, this phone comes with MapKings and it only have Asian’s map, no German map , so if it doesn’t work with the new sim card then it is really a piece of expansive junk for me.
Thanks once again for ur help.

This my 2c worth:
1) I see that all the SIM cards you have tried in Germany are "contract" or pre-paid. Were the "local" SIM's you used in Asia also contract or pre-paid, or open ? My thought is that it is the telco carriers that are applying a lock, not the PDA. Perhaps try an "open" SIM ... if this is too expensive in Germany, then I suppose you need to approach the telcos with some persistence. This problem of telcos deciding which device and software you may use is becoming a world-wide big nuisance. It's like buying a car and then having the oil companies tell you what vehicle brand and accessories you may have !
2) MapKing is an Asian program and of course only maps Asian areas. Perhaps you need to decide on a European sat-nav program
Thanks ianl8888,
What is “open SIM”? The “contract sim” that I used in Asia and tried in Germany are from my friends who have a contract with a mobile phone operator; the prepaid card that I used in Asia was those I bought at local 7-11 stores, they all works fine.
What is telco? Telephone company? I call my prepaid card company (Vodafone) several times, all operators that I spoken to said that they have never heard this before, they said if sim lock then I would have another error message, every time I called they ended up sending me a replacement which is still not working.
Yeah, I know that Mapking is an Asian company but didn’t realize that they don’t have European map. By the way, I have a tomtom on my PDA, do u think that version works on Cruise as well?
Thanks once again!
Hello again,
Here in Europe I tried a lot of Navigation SW,
In my point of view I prefere the IGo 2006/ 8 when it is comming out
(Very easy to use and quiet good new maps)
The second I have is the new Navigon 6
(it uses a lot of instant memory, but with the cruise your are save on this behavor)
I think you should go for an upgrade. The rom you have is not the newest one and has a few old drivers.
1st upgrade Oli's Hard SPL (Very important and you must check after thu upgrade at the Colored splash screen to have it on the right version)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351964
2nd then Upgrade OS to (for example bepe it is very stable)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369310
3rd upgrade Radio Rom to the latest version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1967089
Okay, I think I will give it a try this weekend, but once again, do u think that the os is the source of my problem? My phone is actually very slow and for a person like me, who only used normal mobile phone in the past, the speed of making a normal phone call on this device is difficult to get use to, and the device is somehow very unstable, I have to perform a soft reset almost every second day, after a while the device doesn’t response, e.g. few hours ago, after making a phone call, I pressed the on/off button briefly to put it to sleep, but then it never wake up again . I want to do hard reset but not before I got all data backup.
Thanks once again to all your help and good night!
Hello,
You are right ... original roms are not very stable ...
I run bepe's rom and its very stable ... I reset my device only for upgrades for the moment.... Bepe's rom is stable like a rock and with the taskmanager you can easy manage it.
For databackup take the pimbackup.... it's a very good tool and free!
http://www.dotfred.net/default.htm
Have a good evening
Roman
Your ROM seems to have a different version from those "Shipped ROMS" posted here so make sure to back it up first before doing any "Flashing".
thanks! I do realize that I have a different version ROM (lower version, I think) than most people in here have and I wonder is it because of Asian version?
Backup the original ROM? That would be great, but how?
I called the sales woman in HKG and she mentioned that some sim card might have different voltage and that might caused the problem that I have. Then I searched this forum and did find some posts mentioning this, but I still haven’t found a solution yet. Any idea?

Atom not working with Mobifone supplier In VietNam

Hi every one!
I live in VietNam, and I bought a second XDA_ATOM, so in my country have 3 GSM supplier is: Mobifone (www.mobifone.com.vn), Vinaphone (www.vinaphone.com.vn) and Viettel (www.viettelmobile.com.vn). So, when i use supplier Vinaphone or Viettel, my phone is working good. But, when i insert Mobifone sim card (supplier is Mobifone), my phone is not working good. (some Mobifone sim card is work normal, some not work, but almost all is not working good). I ask Mobifone supplier about this, after they checked, they said that: this is error of my XDA_ATOM phone. (but my ATOM work normal with other supplier and some sim card)
My Radio is: RS00049 and RS00052, both of them is not working good.
Then, I ask O2 asia, they also said that: the phone i not have any problem.
and i also ask this question in www.pdaviet.net, but they write: some of ATOM is not working with mobifone supplier. so, I need every one help me, if you know about this, please send me some advice.
Please help me as soon as possible!
Thanks and regards

T-mobile HD2, unlocked and won't connect to O2

I purchased an HD2 from eBay, it was locked to T-mobile. I immediately purchased an unlock code, installing my old iPhone sim (making O2 aware of what I was doing) and punching in the unlock code. All appeared well, however it won't connect to the telephone network. I'm getting the GSM icon and I can strangley check emails when out and about sometimes. But I can't make nor receive calls.
I've taken the T-mobile ROM off and replaced it via HSPL with ...
RUU_Le2_UK_1.43.206.4_Radio_Signed_15.26.50.07U_2.04.50.22_2_Ship
Which is the standard O2 ROM. It throws up the following error when searching for networks and trying to connect to O2.
"cannot register on selected network, choose another network".
I've tried everything and I'm just about losing it, smashing the phone passed my mind at one point.
I've tried my sim in another O2 HD2 and it worked fine, on all account. His O2 sim didn't work in my phone, which is annoying. So the issue is with the handset.
Before I go insane, I don't suppose someone knows a very easy solution to this issue?
Regards,
Sii

Very srtange.
automatic network selection brings back a failure to connect, however manual selection brings back all UK providers, selecting O2. I get "cannot register".
I wonder if it's something to do with O2 barring the handset? Brand new before I opened it. Also it was locked to T-mobile.
There must be a very simple explanation for this I hope.
Sounds like you may have to contact T-mobile for an unlock code.

I've paid this company ....
[unlockdata dot co dot uk for a code and have used it, however that does appear to be the issue from what I can see.
They sent me a code, when placing my O2 sim in the phone asked for it, I entered it and all appeared well. However it must not be the case deep down in the phone somewhere.....
are you sure it hasnt been blocked by t-mobile? Could well be an insurance scam: data usually works on blocked phones whereas GSM doesn't.
Well I've took my O2 sim card out and stuck my T-mobile one back in and the T-mobile one works and the O2 one doesn't, but I can't make calls.
Did some diggging that this ....
I've not been able to use the phone due to it actually being barred from service. Please use the below link ..
www . checkmend . com / uk / verify
With the certificate ID of - CM4510856-D4848
Looks like it's not stolen or lost, but just barred. I wonder why.
Is there any way I can get this removed?
Its blocked then: blocked and barred are the same thing. More than likely the seller has sold the device then immediately reported it lost/stolen to claim a new one and thus not only have a new phone buy also a nice slice of cash in their back pocket.
There is no way that the phone will be barred without having been reported as either lost or stolen and there is also no way of having it unblocked unless you are the original owner, haven't made an insurance claim, and ring T-mobile with the blocking password provided when the loss was first reported to the police.
Personally I recommend you lodge a claim with PayPal immediately as any other line of enquiry will only serve to delay the inevitable: you will not get the phone unblocked.
Best of luck sorting it out.
Complaint logged with Paypal, just have to wait and see what comes of it. Included the link to the file saying it's barred, let's see what the seller has to say about that.
c*ck omlette that he is
Thanks so much for the info and shoulder to cry on, heh heh.
All the best, Sii
Good luck with it mate, hope you get it sorted quickly.
Well I spoke to T-mobile and they said "no idea why we blocked it, it's not listed as stolen or anything, there you go, unbarred".
I can make calls on my T-mobile sim, however it still REFUSES! to connect to O2, even though I've put in the unlock code supplied by the company listed above.
Spoke to O2 customer support and T-mobile, no bars on the phone, no issues are barring by either provider. Just refuses to connect to O2.
Any ideas?
If not, anyone want to buy a £360 2 day old HD2?

I've had 3 sims from O2 already this week, they've been really cool about it.
I've also had to ROMS on, the original t-mobile one, and the latest HTC ROM too.
I can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is, it's very annoying.
I may just put it up for sale on the bay of E, it works perfectly on T-mobile.
I'll try some other flashes this evening and see if that fixes it, however I don't think it will. FUnny thing is that it won't connect to the network but the large [G] connects, which does make me believe it's something radio based.
Been told to check the following ....
Yes in the sim card options type mepd
Network active - locked
Network disabled / inactive - unlocked
ANy ideas how?
Bit of an obivous thing really, but did you have to go through connection setup when you put the O2 SIM in?

Yes, and it won't connect/register/logon/access the O2 network.
This is the confusing thing, it can see the network but won't register with it
im not sure exactly which ROMS you have tried so i dont know whether they would have included a radio update... to be sure flash the radio ONLY!

Can anyone on O2 UK please list the Radio flash they're using and working with?
I did list the ROM I'm currently using in my first post.
I tried this with the originally installed T-mobile ROM (unknown details, apologies) the latest HTC ROMs (United Kingdom 1.48.405.2 and WWE:1.66.405.2) direct from their UK site and then the O2 listed in my first post.
I'll give everything another go tonight, seriously running out of steam on this topic though

Excellent, thanks so much for the information, I'll give that a stab when I get in after work. To save me hunting around, I don't suppose you'd be so awesome as to link to the ROM
Thank for everything guys, I just hope this ROM update fixes something ....

HD2 stolen and urgent advice needed

Hi
Just had my HD2 stolen this afternoon.
I will be on flight to Hong Kong tomorrow evening.
The phone was bought sim free in UK and not insured so can't claim for replacement.
Anyway, I just want to know:
1. I live in London and is there any shops that I can buy a new sim free one from tomorrow (Monday)?
2. If 1 is not possible and I bought one from Hong Kong, would it be an Asia HD2 version or there is just one version globally? If it is Asia HD2, does it have English language and can you still use programs like CHT Home Tab/Editor, BsB Tweaks it?
3. I use the phone to receive my emails. Is there any chance the login password could be retrieved by whoever stolen it?
4. Can whoever stolen my phone still receive my emails even I have barred the SIM card?
Thanks!
If you used Microsoft My Phone app on your HD2 you can use it to possibly locate your phone. Just go to myphone.microsoft.com and log in with your Windows Live or MSN account wich ever one hou used for yhe Microsoft My Phome app.
Ic you by another HD2 there in Hong Kong it will more than likely be the Asian model HD2 and I think it does have english as one of the languages. You would also be abale to use all the apps you mentioned in your post. Just be careful if you do purchase one there as it is a lot of clone/fake HD2 being sold there and on the internet from there. But wih you have had a real HD2 you know how it should look and all. The fake ones look different.
Who ever stole your phone shouldn't be abale to get your passwords a.d if you have barred tbe sim card they will not be abale to use your sim card to make calls and such. They will have to sim unlock it to even be able to put another sim card in it to use with another carrier.
just adding on to what T-Macgnolia mentioned above. if you have the original box of your hd2 then it would have the imei. you can call your network provider and have the phone blocked completely. though of course it doesn't guarantee that you'll get your phone back, but at least the jerk who took it can't use the phone. it'll be a media player and a gps but as far as the phone app, it'll be blocked. normally your network carrier will pass on your imei to other network providers for blocking (at least i assume this'll be what happens as it's what's done here in australia).
- as mentioned above, just make sure you buy a genuine hd2 and not the clone. if you happen to stumble across one with a front cam or 2 sim card capabilities, it's a clone.
- definitely your emails are safe once your sim card is blocked
cheers

Even if it doesn't have english, you just enter in bootloader and flash any custom or unlocked location stock rom

Will try that. Hopefully Vodafone would do it even though it was not their branded HD2.
Just got off the phone with Vodafone - they said they couldn't do it.
Oh well, just have to be more careful in the future. This is the 1st time that I had a phone stolen since my Motorola MicroTAC II in the early 90's!
They can't do it because (I'm assuming) you didn't buy it from them. Ring o2 and they'll probably be able to block the IMEI and blacklist it. That's assuming you bought it from them too obviously.

just my 2 cents: sorry as i forgot to mention this bit
before i got my hd2 i was using a touch pro 2. it was stolen in my previous office (yeah the jerk works in the same place as i did). anyway, i called up my network provider (telstra) and they also said they couldn't lock my phone. however, i googled locking the imei and came up with yet another customer service line that was independent to telstra. so i reported my imei and it took a few seconds for the guy on the phone to say "ah, there it is." he then confirmed it was now locked.
played around with google and found this site:

not sure if this applies to you mate as you're in london while i'm in australia. but hope that helps.
cheers

Get one from a big reputable stores like Fortress, Broadway, Chung Yuan, etc. Make sure they have the QTS logo. Emphasis you want an English edition. The box should read "HTC HD2 T8585 (WWE)".
However, I don't think you would get international warranty.
I supposed you have already changed your passwords. Even then, he can still read the mails that are already downloaded.
HD2 in HK are using Asia/Europe bands:
3G: 900/2100
2G: 850/900/1800/1900
Should be the same as in UK.
Well, I went to lots of shops and finally found one that sold it - most other shops said the HD2 was unpopular and been discontinued for awhile. It was an Asian model and I asked if they could change it to English which they did. Had it for nearly 2 weeks now with no problems and all for £240 which was a great deal.
Incidentely I looked a copy version from China - put my SIM card in and it jammed...
