Step backward from the LG G2

I bought the 32gb, 3gb ram version from Amazon DE. I watched a lot of review sites and they generally praised the phone and said the performance was good. Here my initial thoughts:
-- the screen is too warm and makes everything look dull when compared to LG G2
-- Performance is very poor compared to the LG G2, G2 is snappy in comparison
-- animations, scrolling etc are running at 10-15fps or it seems. Compared to the LG G2, its buttery on the G2. Im a sucker for smooth animations
-- launching app - for some reasons there is a noticeable delay - that was rare on the G2
-- battery poor compared to the LG G2
-- games suffer from low frame rates compared to the LG G2.
-- youtube chrome cast bug - not a problem on G2 - means I'm unable to use me chromecast now. Bugger..
-- and the phone gets too hot..
-- hissing when using AUX output in car.
Antutu show the G3 as having lower performance them the G2.
I sold my G2 and feel like have just been robbed by LG. Yes, i loved the G2 and was expecting more of the same.
All this at the cost of having a quad hd screen - a marketing spec stunt, processor is marginally better then G2 on paper and GPU is the same as the G2. In real terms a massive step backwards in almost all regards.

I have to agree in part.
I love this phone but it is clear that there are some steps backward.
The battery and slickness are my two main concerns.
However I LOVE the camera which is a substantial improvement.
I love the screen at 100% but it only takes about 3mins use before this gets throttled to 90%
The removable battery is a great idea in theory but I cannot find anywhere to buy a spare so what's the point?
The sd card is important to me and is probably the main reason I upgraded. If the G2 had a card slot I doubt I would have changed.
I am hoping many problems can be resolved in an update but I am getting the impression that LG are not the quickest with firmware updates - fingers crossed!

I have been reading too that it takes a week for the g3 to learn you use and battery life improves and I just hope the us models are better or they release a update to fix this issues

I have had mine over a week now and sot has maybe improved from 2hrs to 2hrs 30mins. Not enough of an improvement. I really want sot to last at least 3hrs 30 mins to see me through a full day of my usage.
I have read that to disable the permissions for the McAfee App will give significant improvements. I have just done this tonight so I will report back tomorrow if there is any improvement.

How have you done this?

Settings - security - phone administrators

I cant do that. Mcafee is greyed out. Was your that as well?

It was greyed out until I unticked the permissions in security , then when I returned to the app I was able to force stop.

Nothing special, web browsing mainly. About 30 mins music. A bit of tweeting.
Screen set to 90% brightness.
WiFi and Bluetooth always on.

Yup. That's for sure.

If its that bad download nomone and reduce the resolution. Personally i don't think its that bad, with a few tweaks and a custom launcher the phone is fine. I do think the S801 isn't really suitable for QHD though.

The lag goes away using a third party launcher such as nova. The phone hardware is fantastic, it's the software that lets it down in some things. With iPhones it is the complete opposite

Let's See Exactly How QHD Affects Performance

These tests were run on an LG G3 VS985. Screen resolution was changed using the Resolution Changer Pro app.
Resolutions tested were:
* 2560x1440 @ 540ppi
* 1920x1080 @ 360ppi
* 1280x720 @ 240ppi
Here are my results
**Conclusion**
QHD results in approximately a 15% hit of graphics performance on the same hardware vs a 1080p resolution.
Also notable is that in AnTuTu, even at 720p resolution, the LG G3 scores less than the LG G2. At QHD, it dips below the Galaxy S4. My guess would be that this is because of LG's power-saving features preventing the SoC from being used to its full ability.
Also of note, I literally cannot tell the difference between 1080p and QHD on this display. Even 720p still looks really good, but LG's UI has some scaling issues.

well did you test it on battery?

We already knew that a QHD display with the Snapdragon 801 was going to give you less performance than a 1080p display with a Snapdragon 800 chip. This is old news and doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know
The real question is if running the device on 1080p/720p give you more battery life than 1440p. And if so, how much more

Plugged in to USB. Didn't want heat to be an issue by charging it at the full 1.8A

Benchmarks are a joke!

Just goes to show what devs have been saying for years, benchmarks dont mean crap! lol

nah they definitely do mean something. Have you tried AnTuTu X? It prevents the clock speed from changing when it detects a benchmark running (aka "benchmark cheating", although I'm not too fond of calling it that for reasons), so it gets exactly the performance other apps get. Pretty sure LG just disables thermal throttling during most benchmarks, so 99% of the time you'll get the performance that AnTuTu X says you have rather than what regular AnTuTu says.

Turn off knock on and a few useless apps and you can make consistent benchmarks like this. This is pure stock, no root and not my highest run. Im even running a few widgets in the background.

I disagree. I like the back button placement. On side buttons I inadvertently always hit volume or power when using my phone. I would, and do, disable knock on as I do not find it useful, however knock on is a small thing, even with it enabled you will pull 35 to 36k antutu scores with proper settings, of course knock on will eat your battery.
I do not multi task on a small phone, there just isnt enough screen, so I set up a toggle for turning it on and off, I keep it off unless I need it which means it will never be on.
From previous lg phones I know quick remote will chew through battery and cpu if left on so I simply toggle it off until I want to use it. I do use that a lot.
I do not find google now helpful so it is off. I do find google search useful so it is on and ok google is enabled.
I don't use 3 billion widgets but I do have a weather widget and I run sync 24/7 with many accounts such as FB, DB, Etc. With just what ive stated even with knock on enabled you should pull 35k which puts this phone above everthing except the m8 on antutu x. Disable sync, uninstall cpu rape ware and your battery life and benchmarks will be even higher. Currently I have 65% battery left with 4 hours screen on time. Wifi enabled, low signal area. My way works for me.

As an avid gamer. I definitely see the difference between All 3 resolutions. You must test fairly. Download same video in all 3 different resolutions.

What cpu rape ware have you uninstalled? Also do you use greenify or similar apps? 4 hours screen time seems impresssive if you have 65% left.
However I must say this phone sleeps like a baby, 9 hours since I'd pulled it out of the plug. 1% discharge wtf.

So you did the test wrong and may dump your results into trash can. Tests should be performed without charging connected for heating issues to make less impact on results and phone should be cooled before each test

If mainly light use like calls, texting and local video playback it will not much, but anything like web and any games that try push to each pixel will. Gameloft is a good example, since usually have terrible scaling setup (the games behave at whatever the native res).
The advantage is for whatever uses the gpu much. A reason the UI is a little slow (not much IMO) is it is true Qhd graphics and that causes the gpu to sweat some. The mean of the 801 was designed for 1080p. The 805 is the first chip for Qhd.

Anandtech and other reviews that actually do thorough tests pointed out for light use the G3 has the same or better battery life as current devices. The killer is apps like a lot of Web content and games.
SOT is irrelevant unless itemized based on actual use, brightness, what radios are on and the signal reception.

I jst played mc5 and spiderman 2 and thor and I didnt notice a single lag and graphics were on par with my bro z2.
Only one major site has given such review so nothing much to worry about.

I think he is right on certain things, but on the other hand on his final conclusion he is not realistic.
The camera: yeah it is not as good as the high end phones of today, but it is a lot better then the phones that the mainstream buyers had.
CPU/GPU: CPU wise it performance at the same level as a snapdragon, or it comes close to it...
But that is in a benchmark, in real life and normal use you won't see the difference it all comes down to the software/launcher.
GPU is indeed a generation behind, it is clear as water.
Mainstream users or people that don't play a lot of games won't notice, and if they do play a game 80% is playing a 2D game to kill the time.
Hardcore gamers are indeed better of on a other phone if they plan to keep it for 2 years.
NAND that is a different story, I am not really familiar what that does with your performance in every day usage.
But the reviewer, and in other reviews to, stated that it not have a big impact of the normal usage.
So in the end, I think price wise it is a good deal for many people, the note 4 is in Holland a whopping 300 euro expensively than the mate 7

Wow, i just read the lengthy review of anandtech, and im quite surprised with all the neagatives the reviewer has mentioned -- CPU, GPU, NAND & battery life.
I was wondering if he was using an old and an unfinal version of the software in the mate 7. Although he answered that he was using the late october release, pretty much the latest one.
Bottom line is: as a regular user, i dont give a damn about benchmarks and measurements, as long as my actual experience with the device is awesome. And my experience with the mate 7 has been awesome!

Don't worry this phone is amazing I guarantee !!!
And this phone runs all games easily including asphalt 8, modern combat 5, spider man 2, thor and real racing 3. I'm telling you this because I had played these games smoothly on my phone which is 16Gb variant. And battery life is amazing.

The AM7 is a well built and great performing phone, all tasks are executed well. The camera is far better than this review says, so is batterylife. Daily usage is what matters, not benchmarks and other measurement. They have sold more than 1 mill of this one and the majority of buyers will never know or register the cons mentioned by Anand.

Stupid Anandtech. I am very happy with my device. The best I ever had. My battery never lasted a whole day, rather half day. Now I am enjoying it up to sleep time, still have remaining juice. I don't expect my phone camera to be DSLR camera. The camera quality is sufficient for me.
BTW which phone is perfect in this bloody review? He didn't show many phones in these benchmarks. Why? He deliberately wanted to undermine this lovely phone. Because he knows that people like it. That's it.

actually.. I find it a valid point.. But I guess it is typical chine design
No seriously without some one bringing it up you will most likely not noticed it...
But for me it is a problem when I try to connect the usb charging cable at night in dark... cause usually I try to find the middle point but the usb port is slightly to the left...not a deal breaker... it still does look better then most devices..

This review is shocking.
The truth is the camera is so good on stable shot but not on moving objects. The camera also blows the iPhone 6 in close up shot. In a certain close distance, the iPhone 6 just cannot get a focus but the Mate 7 manages to capture the object with great details. Not to mention the excellent pictures in day light environment, which is no worse than Samsung's 2014 S5 (best in the day light capturing league). In low light, this phone even beats the S5.
The drawback might be when it is used to capture moving objects, because it does not have OIS.
Anyway the camera on the mate 7 is among the best flagships and I am only satisfied on it!
Second is the battery life. In wifi, the phone can have 8 to 10 hours screen on time on my use (mainly on browser, social apps, occasionally light games)! I am not kidding. Please get an equivalent phone with "more efficient" hardware packed like the snapdragon in front of me to compete!
I am a previous Nexus 5 owner. The only problem or step back I feel on this upgrade is the UI speed feeling. But I cannot complain as I came from the fastest phone in the world. However even in this field the Mate 7 still performs acceptable. (fluent, but just no lighting fast like the N5 in ART)
I am very shocked they say this phone still not in the league of the best. Because there are no better options!
Note 4 - Close but a step back on battery life and TW UI
Nexus 6 - Who dare say the camera on the N6 will be better than the Mate 7? Where is the micro SD?
iPhone 6+ - Kidding me but ask me to use a pretty much same size device but with a 5.5'' screen?
So I am sorry, there are no better options so far in the market!

thing is guys when people in these reviews knows that phone comes from china it auto goes negative.. bcos they think china makes crap phones.. they are used to it that it must be all top notch.. but when it comes to iphone sht then auto is everything tolerated bcause it is not from china..
it is just life .. peoples mentality... they do what they want to do.. how they likes it..not genuine way..
like iphone has only 1gb ram they say that is fine as iphone doesnt need it.. but when it comes to android and they wud see 1gb they wud go balistic.. oo only one gb

I am surprised to hear that because the Note 3 is still a powerhouse of a phone to me. It's just that the locked bootloader was very restrictive.

I came from the Galaxy S5 recently! Welcome!

Yes the note 3 was a beast and still is....but in comparison to the note 4 it shows its age as it feels really dated

I downgraded in screen size from the xperia z ultra but this screen is amazing camera is freaking awesome. And so is the screen I always said why do we need a 4k screen but now I have one I know why

4k = nonsense.. why waste more battery when you absolutely cannot see any difference at ALLL.. 2k already impossible to see to the naked eye so what benefit your getting from 4k?.. if you can tell me some reasonable benefit ill give you all my support. .

Dude, if you can't see the difference between FULL HD. And 2K? You clearly have vision problems. When I went from the note 3, to the note 4. The change was amazing. Screen still awws me at times

Dude YOUR clearly retarded.. no naked eye can see the difference between 2k and 4k. You got stunned because the panel is different... n the color reproduction is different. Does not mean the actual ppi in full HD was a dramatic increase when switcging to 4k. Learn more about hardware n display panels (digitizer).. ill pay for someone to spt a lixel in a full HD screen while viewing a full hd video.. the human eye just cant spot it...

Just got my Note 4 tonight after waiting for it to be shipped! Loving it! Got mine white, Caseology case and IntelliGlass tempered glass screen protector. Came from the Note 2.. Will be rooting soon for sure. Was running Lollipop on the 2, might just root tomorrow or this weekend and that's it til I play with the "stock" options til I figure them all out and decide what rom I wanna try first...

And besides that, I'm so old, I grew up without a mobile phone, so I can still remember not having one..

It's kinda weird that almost no one is talking about #OnePlus6 's camera performance in their videos.. ??? WHY ??? Have never seen this with any other flagship launch.

They aren't allowed to. There's a review embargo until the phone is available for purchase.

Plus one (OnePlus?) for setting an example for your kids mate. My parents always kept their phones on the kitchen counter when I was in high school, they used to berate me for taking mine with me to bed. I had a couple friends though that weren't in the best place though, so I liked to have it with me in case they needed something.

Hmm,I expect review by Monday 21 May, as Oneplus goes for sale in India from Monday.

This is sooooooooooooooooooooo fustrating!!!! so many ****ty vlogger have the phone and no one can upload a few sample photos?!?!?!
it's smell fishy to me. I suggest to not buy the phone until full camera review!

Absolutely Camera is the topmost priority..Hope it'll be better than their last effort in 5T

The number one thing that is ruining camera performance is the lack of OIS. I can almost assure you that the camera will be impressive, because with a 1.22um pixel sensor combined with OIS you cannot go wrong (iPhone 8 has the same combination). One reviewer couldn't help and said he was impressed by the low-light performance. But there is an embargo at this moment.

My thoughts on the phone are mixed, I like the way it functions, the gestures are still a WIP and the camera is improved but Pixel 2 is better... For the price you are paying (Pixel 2 right now is 100$ more) it is a decent buy, but I would get why someone would just pay the extra 100 and get a Pixel 2

Will check it out today at one plus store. So far reviews have been mixed regarding camera performance.

I like it but it should have been cheaper!

OnePlus CAN go wrong even with this hardware.
They will most likely **** it up with their post processing and camera APIs...
