Hi everyone,
I have a redmi note 2 prime, buyed 4 months ago.
I like it much, except for the camera and the community development: they ported the cm 12 and other cool things, but I come from a nexus 5 and I miss it a lot from this point of view. I know the nexus is the most modded phone, but from a phone which sold that much (redmi note 2) I was expecting more development (I know that the kernel source is needed for this...). Also helio x10 was a bit disappointing: good battery, but it's slower of the sd800 (I compared both) of my old nexus 5 and it gets hot when playing.
That said, I saw the new redmi note (redmi note 3 pro) and now I want to buy that.
I would sell my redmi note 2 prime (let's say for 130-40€) and buy the redmi 3 pro for 210€
So for 70-80€ this would be the main improvements:
Helio x10 -> snapdragon 650 (from 45000 to over 70000 on antutu)
2gb ram -> 3gb RAM
13mpx rear camera -> 16mpx (hopefully does better)
Single flash led -> dual tone
3000mah battery -> 4000mah
No fingerprint sensor -> fingerprint (I really like it)
Plastic body -> metal
Now the questions:
Very important to me, will this phone be more easy to development (because of snapdragon instead of mediatek) and will it actually have more development? (Will the kernel source be public as for other xiaomi snapdragon devices?)
For you, is it worth to upgrade from rn2 prime to rn3 pro for 70-80€?
It has passed one week since the launch of rn3 pro and still there is no reviews (not a single one). Why?
Other thoughts about it are welcome.
Thank you.
Yes, buy it. It has no sd card support which sucks but rom development is more feasible.
There is sd card support!!u can put one sim and sd card at the same time!!

i think the most interesting in reno 3 pro for me are volte and global band support (including cdma2000). i would like to switch to this phone which volte is widely adopted in my country.
whether or not mod exist depends on ..
1. the sales volume and most important 2. source code availability. xiaomi will never opensource as you wish.

1. Sales volume is very hard to predict. Maybe tomorrow they announce the redmi note 4 and nobody buys the redmi note 3 pro anymore.
2. This is what I want to fully understand. I know that xiaomi doesn't release the kernel source, but I also heard that snapdragon socs have public code which help developing ROMs (I am a noob about this, so I'm not sure what I'm talking about).
For example, redmi note 2 kernel source is not public, but other devices with snapdragon socs have more roms and development (for example mi4iand others). The mi4 has even an official CyanogenMod and windows 10.
(3) Bootloader? I know that xiaomi blocks the bootloader of their devices now. If I order the rn3 pro from China, will I get a Chinese ROM or international? (I would love in Italian, but English is good too). Anyway I would request the code to unlock it after a few days/weeks.

There are the kernel sources of other dmartphones wirh helio x10, but we miss the sources of device-specific drivers. So if xiaomi doesn't release the source it will be hard too.
For the bootloader/language question.
You will get the phone with locked bootloader and with the chinese-english rom. The global rom may be release, but it's not confirmed.

Maybe they'll release the driver sources for the 3 Pro as it's being sold in India. Don't know if it has the same hardware, though. Screen, sensors, etc might be different from the RN 2 and 3 in the 3 pro.

Currently using Redmi Note 2 Prime, but with the release of Redmi Note 3 Pro i'm also considering change my phone
I'm also an owner of a RN2 Prime and considering an upgrade to the RN3 Pro. But not immediately, about 6 months from now. This should be plenty of time for these 3 things to happen:
1. The RN3 Pro's price to drop to a stable point
2. Reliable user feedback to be available online
3. Custom development activity to (hopefully) start
I'm going to China in March (10 days, from the 2nd)... If I manage to get one (or two for my friend) redmi not 3 pro 3/32gb for the original chinese price (about 180€), I will definitely buy that. I saw from reviews a big improvement in camera performance, cpu performance, battery performance. And the lovely metal body with fingerprint sensor... I saw photo/video/gaming samples and review here: http://gizchina.it/2016/01/xiaomi-redmi-note-3-pro-la-recensione-di-gizchina-it/ (it's in italian) and I want it so much. Still, I'm scared about the amount of development that the device is going to have.

Got my Mi Pad 3 about a week ago. anybody else gotten it so far?
loving it for the most part. volume rocker and power feel a little wobbly, and I get some random MIUI FC's, and it FC's every time I open the screen battery statistics. Anybody else getting this issue?
Hey, I got this device 5 days ago. Bought for e-book reading, but was better than I thought.

I get that FC too. Settings -> Battery -> Battery Use -> Screen, and it's over.
Side buttons are made of plastic and it's littly wobby - that's regular in middle ranged xiaomi phones anyway.
Anyway, good device. And I'm waiting for a RR Rom to flash.

no ROM yet besides china stable and developer. TWRP just appeared on the MIUI forums today though. sadly no touchscreen support as far as I can tell.
Try flashing one of the modified MIUI roms from one of the below:

I guess we all have to wait. A lineage package would be awesome.

Allow me to put the nail in the coffin here. Intel Atom chips have only received love from KonstaT - his work on Cube Iwork8 Ultimate/Air + Chuwi tablets sporting the Atom chips e.g. - he is the main reason anything gets done for the Mi Pad 2 (check the credits )
The Nvidia chip is found in ... Shield Tablet which is still being supported and in other devices - still receiving love.
Quick search on the MT8176 chip. Couldn't find anything. And I know for a fact that KonstaT doesn't mess with MediaTek chips.
Obviously, I hope the best for the Mi Pad 3 owners, but it doesn't look too good right now. Mind you, I did suggest that you try flashing the Xiaomi.eu and/or Multirom.me's Mi Pad 3 MIUI rom. They both optimize the rom, so give it a go and tell us which is better.
Lastly, Chris from TechTablets isn't impressed and suggests the Mi Pad 2 and Ifive Mini 4S over the Mi Pad 3.

Hi, although I'm not expecting much development (if any) for this tablet and I know it won't be a hit in sales, I find it most interesting. Those specs are just fine for my needs.
Plus, Xiaomi has proven a brand with very high quality products and which you can trust (I've had a couple of phones, the 12.5" laptop and some other stuff from them and I love them).
So I couldn't resist and I have just ordered one. As long as there is Miui and it gets a couple of update, it's fine for me.
Anyway if any developer is motivated for some cooked roms, I'm sure a few of us will appreciate!

MAC address changes after wakeup from Wifi standby
I just received my MiPad 3 this weekend - a nice first impression regarding appearance and haptics,
BUT, I recognized that every time the Wifi wakes up from standby again, the MiPad comes up with a different MAC address! Not after reboot (observed on different MediaTek devices, e.g. Cubot X9), but on any Wifi reconnect after standby it reconnects with strange MAC addresses beginning with 00:00:00:aa:bb:cc - while in the "about the Phone" still the original MAC address is stated.
It seemes that this behaviour had been an issue for the MiPad 2 as well:

VERY disappointing at all!

I tried to register as a user at xiaomi.eu and kept getting an error message that my attempt to register was rejected because it "resembled automated or spam-like behavior. Please contact the administrator for further information or assistance." I tried 8 or 9 times before giving up. At any rate, I did download TWRP for the Mi Pad 3 and installed it. I then flashed the custom "weekly" room from 5-26 and all is good. It sort of took care of the region issue as settings no longer shows China.
Would really like to contribute at that site, but if it's that difficult to register - forget it. But thanks for the link. ?
To all those who want to know more about Project Treble please use this thread to discuss about it.
What is Project Treble?
Ans. Treble is the most significant low-level change to the Android platform to date. To simplify heavily, it separates the vendor implementation from the Android framework in an effort to avoid lengthy waits for updates. . Let’s break things down a bit more:
The full update process to bring a new Android version to devices is a long and complex topic.
The “vendor” usually refers to silicon-manufacturers such as Qualcomm, but can also refer to the maker of any other proprietary hardware found in a device. The “device maker” or “OEM” usually needs to wait for the vendor to update their code so the proprietary hardware works with the Android OS framework in a newer version of Android.
However, what is happening with Project Treble is that Google is requiring that any vendor-specific code be separated from the Android OS framework and instead live in its own vendor implementation. Usually this means that there is now a separate /vendor partition on Treble-enabled smartphones that contains a bunch of HALs (Hardware Abstraction Layers).
Furthermore, vendors must implement code that lets the Android OS framework communicate with HALs in a standardized way. This is done via HIDL (HAL Interface Definition Language). With this in place, an OEM can work on an Android update without having to wait on vendors to update their HALs. Theoretically, this should speed up the entire Android update process as vendors can update their code at any time through the Play Store.
For indepth information check out this pagehttps://www.androidauthority.com/project-treble-818225/
Devices with Treble support:
- Essential PH-1
- Google Pixel
- Google Pixel XL
- HTC U11 Plus
- Huawei Honor 8 Pro
- Huawei Mate 9
- Huawei Mate 10 Pro
- Sony Xperia XZ1
- Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
- Asus Zenfone 4 (ZE554KL)
- Honor V10
- Huawei P10/ P10 Plus
Devices which will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo will be Treble compatible by default.
Older devices will become treble compatible if the OEM creates a vendor partition via OTA update, like the Honor 8 Pro.
Custom Roms:
As of now @phhusson is working hard to make his AOSP rom boot as a fully functional rom on all the Treble supported devices, go check out the rom thread here https://forum.xda-developers.com/pr...evelopment/experimental-phh-treble-t3709659"]

[NOTE: New devices with Treble support are launching so its not possible for me to update the supported device list, so they'll not make their name on my list, but you can surely ask about your device on the discussion thread]
My understanding of Treble is, from the *big picture* anyway, that the responsibility for hardware access shifts from Google to the individual device mfgs.
The hope for us is that new versions of Android can be distributed much more rapidly, because testing of new hardware (or changes to existing hdw) won't have to wait for the new OS to be done, and that the interface to the hdw will be separate from the OS.
Another hope would be that a devices 'life span' would increase? (or at least stay current longer).

Treble means separating the vendor source from the software source, the treble devices will have a separate vendor partition, in which the vendor source will be. Now the manufacturers will only require to make the Software bug free so that the user dosent face any problems in day to day usage. From @phhussons AOSP treble rom we can get a clear picture that by separating the vendor source, the Treble based AOSP roms will run on any Treble compatible device regardless of the SOC/hardware configuration.

Ah yes that makes sense, it's not only the hardware source (vendor specific), it's also the vendors software (their mods and bloatware) that will be in the separate partition.
It really does sound as though this should speed up the time it takes for users to get updates of all kinds. It also seems pretty certain, non-Treble enabled devices will fall by the wayside. Doesn't seem there's any way around that?

For non-treble devices the only way is that the OEMs must release an OTA update which will create a separate Vendor partition, but OEMs won't do(except some recent flagships) that bcz they want sales of newer devices with Treble support. As far as time is concerned, suppose it takes 2-3months for an OEM to build a fully bug free update, but it will require 3-4weeks for the OEM to build that same update

Yes, it seems the consensus is that mfg's won't risk bricking the phones by doing that kind of an OTA update? We'll see fairly soon what they'll do with the older devices.
It's good that google is calling the shots with this and is insisting new Oreo devices have it. It's bad though that devices just a few months old that cost mucho bucks may go without it.

The honor 8 pro got Treble via OTA because it was one of the best selling device, but some OEMs will prefer not to do that so that customers will shift to newer devices. Like OnePlus could have easily added Treble to atleast 5/5T but they thought of not doing it, just depends upon the OEM

Thanks Neighbor. Huawei is rapidly moving to the top of my list of phone mfg to buy. It doesn't look like the kirin processors have much los support, but with treble... well, it seems previous prerequisites are being turned upside down.
For sure, when one evaluates (buying) a phone, many factors are relevant. But for most (if not all) of us, how long the phone will stay up to date is probably at the top of that list.
Hope the other mfg's follow Huawei's lead here, else we'll have a lot of recently mfg phones with outdated sftwr soon.

Huawei is the 3rd most fastest growing OEM after Apple and Samsung. What stops me from buying a Honor Device is the Kirin SOC and apps like Google Camera port dosent work on the devices except devices with Snapdragon SOC, so will wait for a device with the specs like the Mi A1 and a 18:9 display

Very good point. So even with Treble, which SOC (the phone has) will still be relevant in some respects. I have a G6 and think a wide angle lens is da bomb, but could easily do without all the glass 'bling'.

Nothing at all wrong with the Kirin SoC, performance is on par with the Qualcomm SoC, only real downfall is that Huawei doesn't sell the Kirin to other oems, otherwise it would be more widespread. The Kirin 970 with its built in NPU and and gigabit LTE modem is going to give the Qualcomm 835/845 a run for their money. Of course the port of the new Google camera app is not going to give you more than the basic functionality as it was written specifically for Google pixel devices (it doesn't give you all the features on older Google or snapdragon devices either), I installed the port on my mate 9 and it was acceptable for basic camera functions but no matter what you do you're never going to get a port of something written for another device to have the same features or performance as the stock app written for your device.

I agree that the Kirin Processors are good, and the reason is Kirin is Huawei's home made processor so the pairing between Hardware and Software is perfectly optimisez for better performance and as far as Better Processing is concerned, after Apple Qualcomm holds the 2nd position no doubt, yeah in near future Kirin might surpass Qualcomm interms of performance no idea.
As far as the ported app is concerned I prefer stock android/custom roms over stock roms(MIUI/EMUI) and if someone ports the stock huawei camera for Los/RR running on Huawei devices itself, I'll surely go with a Kirin device but right now thats not available so after installing a custom rom I'll prefer Google camera app, if not the ported one, I'll go with the one available in Apkmirror, though this is my own preference as I'm addicted to using stock android and google apps suite, lets see how much development the Honor 7X gets, if it gets Treble support via OTA I'll go with it else the Mi A1 as of now is my 1st choice
I'm wondering, and the answer may be 'We don't know yet', but...
Many of us have used custom ROM's to avoid using an OEM's UI, bloatware, etc. Because Treble enabled phones will have a 'Vendor' partition (which will include these UI's etc), will that then mean the mfg's specific stuff can't really be (completely) removed the way an after market ROM does?
Of course, there's always ways of disabling mfg stuff, but Roms like Los just do it all in one fell swoop (much easier).
Do we know at this point how this will work with Treble?
Cheers and Happy New Year

The SOC source code will reside in the vendor partition, for example The Pixel XL has SD835 so the source code of the SOC will be there in itz Vendor partition. So if you are using a Treble enabled device such as the Huawei Mate 9 which has its own custom UI, if u flash a custom rom on it, the stock OS will get completely removed and the run ROM will run on it.
The Mgf's UI is a part of the system nd not of the vendor partition.
I am planning to buy Honor 7x, I found a thread on 7X forum which has Mount points and partition layout details for 7x. In the details, i can see below line, does this mean that phone supports Treble once updated to Oreo?
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Dec 24 10:46 vendor -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p47
Orignal thread link

Thanks:good: in advance!!

It is evident from past experiences that the Honor 7X might get Treble via OTA update as the case was with Honor 8 Pro. The Honor 7X's source code got released a few weeks ago and I got some info that the Open Kirin team will also support the 7X so I guess the Open Kirin team will also release a Treble supported rom
So we're almost at mid 2021 and after a whole year I saw my mi watch collecting dust and I was wondering if there's already a way to get the global version running on the chinese device. Or at least install google play. Lately google's been useless af and can't seem to find anything new about this at all.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm never buying cheap tech again tho. Its 2021, no longer worth cheaping out.

For real, I decided on buying this device “before” the release of the global rom and as a result one year later I still have a Chinese watch
I've got the same problem. All apps and add-ons are Chinese. Although the watch is really nice, battery holds great, there is an English language available but still. Global ROM would be VERY appreciated. If anybody knows of it's existanance please let me know. Thank you.

Any possible way to root? Bootloader unlock? Any possible GSIs and ROMs I could maybe get it to work?
I'd say it's a real decent device in it's category, but unfortunately it's modding support is really undocumented and lacking;(
I have only found and talked with the creator of this optimization/debloat guide for the Xiaomi TV Stick (non-4K, the old one) and have used most of his modifications (and learned what they can break, but not hard to fix since I can re-enable when I want that specific feature): https://sites.google.com/site/tweakradje/devices/xiaomi-mi-tv-stick
but they seem and I'd assume them to be pretty lacking for the much different and newer software the Xiaomi TV Stick 4K runs, so I'm open to any help and suggestions getting the most out of this device
