Hey guys! I know I'm late to the party, but I just got a used S8 and love it so far! One of my only gripes is that I can't seem to find a way to switch it to completely silent with the volume rocker alone. On my previous phones it was easy: Keep Volume Down pressed and it goes to vibrate only, and press one more time to go switch off vibration as well. Easy peasy.
For some reason my Samsung doesn't let me to that. I know there are sound modes and do not disturb in the quick settings, and I'm sure you can hack something together with tasker, but as comfortable and practical Samsung's UI is nowadays, I'm just wondering why they didn't include this little handy feature from the start?
Do you have an idea how I can get this feature on my S8 as well?
I have the Exynos version, if that may help, and I'm on the latest Software available. I don't know what One UI holds in the cards regarding this topic. I hope it will be sorted out by then, but I haven't got the update notification yet.
Thanks in advance! Have a good day XDA!

Well one of my biggest complains by far has got to be reaching my finger all the way across to the top everytime I want to use the phone. On my G1, every single one of the buttons could turn it on, and I know that on the nexus there is a hack called "trackball wake" that does precisely this. Does anyone think that they might be able to port this over? Lol and while we're on the topic of remapping buttons, how about porting the CM long press on volume rocker to skip songs?

This type of thing really bothers me. You're seriously too lazy to reach up 3 inches to press the unlock button? Come on people, its a phone. Half the things on this forum are due to pure lazyness. No personal attack to you, just saying.
Other then that, no there's no app out at the moment. I'm sure cyanogen is working on it if its not done already. Probably waiting for perm root and custom recovery. Patience...

I sometimes just pop the keyboard out-and-in and the screen unlocks. Especially easy since my hinge is loose... ;-(

Maybe once the phone is rooted. Otherwise, we can only wish that HTC will pull their heads out of their asses and pay attention to some of the great features coming out of the ROM community.
So yeah, once the phone is rooted.
You know... I wouldnt mind having something like this. It'd be a little more convenient.
I wonder if Tasker can do something like this.
As long as it is configurable so I don't accidentally unlock the screen in my pocket and uselessly waste battery. I dunno my index finger is always sitting next to the power button when I am holding the phone, its not that hard.

Coming from BB....
in BB the track pad is king.....is is not about laziness...but depending on the situation....if I have it sitting on my desk it would be nice to just press the tp with a finger, as opposed to having to hold the phone with my hand in order to press the top button....
How is this a matter of laziness? Sure I can reach up there, but wouldn't it be much easier just to press the button? It's a matter of convenience, not laziness. Also, my case covers the power button.

It' not a matter of lazyness, it's that it's different from the way I'm used to doing things. The whole point of android is that you can customize it however you like. I mean, according to your thinking, using a bluetooth/wifi/brightness toggle widget makes me lazy since all those settings can already be changed manually? Really?
And I know there's nothing out yet to do what I want. If you check logcat though, every time you push a button on the device you can see the output on the computer. I was hoping a more talented coder than I could help me achieve what I wanted, or at least could point me in the right direction so that I can try to figure this out on my own. Do we really need perma-root for this? It would definately help out so that we don't have to reaply it everytime, but we could make a gscript or something similar with what we have now.

So are you saying that all people who use the trackball to wake up their phones are lazy? Are you saying that wanting to make it easier for myself is a matter a laziness? So what do you call a TV Remote. I COULD get up a turn the TV off, or I can use the remote. Your logic is flawed, maybe you need to find something worthwhile to ***** about.

That would be a great feature. On my Nexus I use NoLock from the market. One of the main reasons I use this is because of the power button on the Nexus had a history of dying after long wear and tear. If you can take away the wear and tear on a part with a history of failing then it is a big plus.I want this feature for my G2 as well. Tried both NoLock and Widgetlocker without success. They both work on the Nexus One without root.
+1
great idea. Thats why they did it on the nexus one....
no laziness. also because the power button broke easy on the nexus and people wanted a way to unlock their phone.
The power button being on top is one of my number one things i dislike about this phone, makes it akward to turn on. So I would LOVE track pad wake. Especially since my hard case kind makes the track pad recessed a bit so it would be hard to push in my pocket.
There is a app on the market called extended controls which has a option to turn off auto lock and use any button to wake the phone up I use it in the car when listening to music, pandora, or making phone calls...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yup it is kind of habit, not simply laziness
I am still getting used to pressing the power key and then swipe the screen to unlock, come on! Most of the time I just turn on then shut the screen
When I was using my G1 with custom rom all I need to do was to press the menu button twice
Hope this thing gets sorted out soon

Yea I've never customized anything in my life even though the g2 is my 2nd android device ever. Wait not to mention I've bought and sold iphones for a living along with jailbreaking them in every possible way and customizing them for anyone with specific settings. But yea i guess "dbags like me never customized anything in my life" id customize my automatic reboot issue but i havent found out how so i guess i gotta accept things the way they are

haha such a heated debate over this. but i agree the power button is in a really bad spot. i was baffled why they didnt make the trackball wake up the phone, especially since it doesnt stick out and sits flush with the front part of the phone so there's minimal chance of an accidental push. to have to push a small button on the very top and back part of the phone and then have to swipe across the bottom of the screen to unlock the phone is really a pain in the ass, especially using it with one hand. the only way it makes sense is if u slid down from the top right of the screen to unlock so u got one fluid motion going.
and while we're on the subject of dumb hardware decisions why the search button on the front but no phone button? maybe it's just me
I came from the iPhone 2G, so Im familar with the power button placement. It did take me a little time to get use to it since the G2 is slightly thicker. I dont think it's in a bad spot though.
Now if we want to talk about bad spots, then the micro USB port is the winner. Not sure what they were thinking there. Why cant it be at the bottom?
Anyway, the trackpad definitely needs a way to wake up the phone. If not a touch-to-wake at least a press-to-wake would be cool.
Personally, the power button should be reserved for powering down and locking the phone.
it was a simple hack on the mytouch slide when i had that, all we needed to do was change a few things in the keymaps and it was fixed, unfortunately since we have NAND locked device we would need to re-apply the hack every time(save hacked keymap to sdcard and add entry to visionary.sh to copy it over to /system) maybe i will look into it, maybe i won't either way the rest of you should be able to figure it out with some looking around the forums and at the correct files
yeah, need track pad and shutter button wake.
HI well, I just got a streak, so I thought I should join up here...
This is my first Android, so I'm a noob.
Is there any way to disable the badly placed volume hardware buttons on the streak? without installing custom Roms etc. I'm too new to start doing stuff like that (give me 2 weeks or so!)
They're pretty annoying and I naturally press them when holding the phone.
The beep they make is not so good either.
Anyways, if anyone else has found a solution I would appreciate it.
Tog.
There are apps on the Market that say they can do that. Here's a couple I found:
Volume Locker
RingGuard
A search for volume locker will find more.
hi guys, i could wake the phone up by pressing volume keys when i use the 2.2
but it useless now with 2.3, do you have same issue?
i guess that is normal..not an issue..

it's not a little issue it's just a big problem.
I have the same annoyance.
This is a Beta release and my guess is that this will be resolved in the official release.
I also miss the ability to go to silent mode from the lock screen.
BUT, apart from that it seems to resolve my random reboots, fingers crossed
Yes, same situation here.
Other than force of habit, is there any specific reason why the previous arrangement was better? After a few hours of use, the Power Button wake-up feels normal.

Yikes, that sounds like a pretty serious oversight. For example, my wife doesn't use the 'draw a pattern' security screen specifically because she needs/likes the ability to immediately slip the phone into silent mode. Fumbling to get your phone into silent mode is awkward and uncomfortable for the user and frequently the user's neighbors. ;-)
I had assumed that the various unlock destinations on the new locked screen could be user assigned. I haven't looked into the matter very far, yet. I suppose the working solution is just stroking into the homescreen and then utilizing the volume key.

For example, I use my phone in a car on a dashboard. And if, for some reason, it turns the screen off I don't want to chase the button in the dark. Or if I just want to see the time and I'm wearing gloves.
Hello you all
i got my trophy today and i was wondering if there is any option to disable the vibration for the "physicale" keys.. or i better say.. for the 3 touch keys (back, home, search) if its possible to disable it please tell me how, thats the only ugly thing if noticed ^^
thanks for help!
I haven't heard of a way to disable the vibrations yet, but there might be a tweak sooner or later. You can turn off vibrations completely if you want though.
I don't know. I know you can disable the search button from doing anything, but the button still causes the motor inside to activate.
Actually I've just stumbled upon a solution. It looks like it works, but I haven't tried it.
Disable haptic feedback
How to set your phone on silent mod with lollipop ?
Do i have unlock the phone every time to lower the volume or pull down the notification?
I used to just hold the power button then select the mode i want >.< when the phone is locked.
This is a step backward IMO

This one with the power button is not present anymore.
The silent mode itself is now called "Interruptions".

Interruptions may be a useful feature but I don't see why it couldn't work alongside Silent mode, it's ridiculous. Well, I can live with Vibrate but it's just the logic behind this move that escapes me.
Silent mode is present on Note Edge Lollipop leak. Weird...
like @Yathani stated, I used hold power to switch quickly to silent without unlocking always. I'm confused why, its a step back!!
That move that Google did with silent mode is ridiculous....I don't see the point in that.

It's funny to read all comments on the Android bugtracker about googles latest move on lollipop silentmode. Its like when they removed sdwrite access in KitKat all over again https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=79445 I wonder how many Android users got late at work because of this move of Google in Lollipop haha
Okay i found the silent mode.
Pull down the notification with two fingers.
Look for the star icon which is the priority mode and long click.
Then on the interruption for everything
Now go pack to the notification and when you click the start icon twice, it will turn to circle with dash inside.
This is your new silent mode
Stupid i know but you have to deal with it
I don't have a star icon. What is the name of it?
edit: oh, I had it already turned to something else - "All".

?? There are no sound options available on the note 4 when you press and hold the power button. I don't see this interruptions thing either. Just an incredibly annoying inability to tuen off unwanted vibrations as the next best thing to silent mode... I've resorted to using airplane mode at night to shut my phone up!! WTF GOOGLE???

Interruption notifications option is located and can be configured under sounds settings. It can be activated and adjusted easily with new quick tile in the top bar. The only minor things is you can't activate it anymore by holding the power button so you need to unlock your phone first [emoji6]
Attention
Don't try what I have said in the previous post. This caused me to arrive late to work due to alarm being on silent as well.

lol,
Well silent mode wil be back in 5.1 so bare with it for now hahaha
Android 5.1 would be launched by the end of February 2015, and a second, completely separate source, also privy to important information regarding Android updates, confirmed it. But to have the firmware shipping on new devices in the first week of February is a nice surprise to all of us.
Not only that, this is allegedly a rather large update with many interesting new features. See the changelog provided to us (from mid-December) below:
Silent mode added after missing on Android 5.0
General improvements in system stability
Improved RAM management
Fixes for sudden app closures
Improved battery management
Excessive consumption of network devices when used Wi-Fi fixed
Issues with wireless connections fixed
Problems with Okay Google function solved
Notifications problems solved
Some sound problems experience by certain devices fixed

there is no silent mode on lollilpop 5.0.1, so a widget cannot do that.
