The audio is awesome. Stereo Sound clearly make a difference (the top one could get louder tho), Dolby Smart Sound performs great. The only thing bothering me with the speakers are the volume steps (they are very messed up), that could be fixed with a software update.
I agree the stereo Dolby sound is great. I thought my G5+ had a good loud mono speaker but on the G7+ it's louder & clearer. I always used V4A on the G5+ but am not sure I'll need it now.
I'm older and don't like earphones unless I'm out in public, and at home I don't listen to music on my phone. But I listen to lots of audio podcasts and stuff on youtube that the screen can be turned off for (using Vanced background play module for Magisk) while going around doing my chores, and for that purpose the G7+ will be even better. And of course for watching videos with screen on the speaker sound is both strong and of good quality.
The Sound is very great.
I am very Happy with the Phone.
I just wish it could be LESS loud!
The 1% volume is still to high when you are listening to some music in bed with someone sleeping in a room nearby. Why can't the volume go lower?
Moto G7 Plus speaker Functionality
The earpiece in the Moto g7 plus serves as the Bass and lowermid frequencies while the bottom speaker gives you mid to highs and has a fuller sound.
The earpiece producing bass gives the phone vibration which you can feel when you hear music. At max volume, the bottom speaker seems to play louder than the earpiece, but that is okay, since the earpiece is actually producing the bass and thump and the vibration.
Quality is really good and enjoyable and even with headphones.
Probably the best speakers in a Moto phone since the Moto X Pure/Style of 2015. Loud and clear. Reasonable tone, considering how small the drivers have to be.
I bought a used G7 Plus recently. The sound is amazing, I'm using it in the Movie setting.
The earpiece speaker (at the top) has a very different sound response and it seems like it has a lower volume than the speaker at the bottom, therefore I went to settings, searched for "balance" and adjusted it by around 30% to the left side. Now it sounds better. When using other audio outputs (bluetooth, P2 earphones) I need to reset the balance to 0.

compared to the z3compact it can get a lot louder. it sounds more full, like you are listening with your headphones in. tested with a youtube video called: music sound test for high end system hd version. but the bass is lacking (but then again it is a phone)
The speakers are good but I want to address the headphone socket controversy. I was unhappy about losing the headphone socket but since using it, the dongle hasn't been an issue for me anymore. its tiny and easy to forget its there when listening to music. I get some good bass from both speakerphone and the earbuds and being more of a music listener than a gamer or movie watcher,, sound quality is a big deal for me.
So give this video a listen and tell me what you all think of the sound from both the speakers and using the dongle and earbuds. i'd like to hear everyone's opinion.

The speaker quality with music is ok, nothing great. BUT the quality when using speakerphone during a call is horrible. It's like someone turned the bass all the way down and the treble all the way up. Sounds hollow and tinny and crackles. Not sure if it's my particular unit or a software issue. Unfortunately the equalizer in the sound settings only has any effect for music and not for calls.

Unfortunately P20 doesn't have stereo speaker like Pro version and sound is just standard and average and nothing special.
Unfortunately i didnt know about it before i got my phone ;_; this suck. Mono speaker is terrible

For me it's sufficient. If I want more I hook it up to my jbl charge 3.
Sound coming out of the single speaker is kind of thin but clear and loud enough for talking head videos and games. Bass is almost completely lacking, but hey... Use headphones for music.
Loud enough, but muffled sound (low clarity). The Honor 10 even with single grill has better clarity in my opinion. The only real downside of P20 sadly.
I have to disagree with everyone here and say I believe the speaker to be very good. I've owned all the latest flagships including P20 pro, s9, iPhone X, one plus 6.
The speaker in my opinion is very good for a single speaker. It's as loud if not louder than many and the depth and range of sound is good .
Obviously stereo speakers would be nice but this does not do bad for a single speaker.

Do you suppose that I have a defective phone since even without comparison to another phone (such as the Honor 10), I can tell the speaker sounds relatively unclear and muffled, especially in low-medium volume.

MUCH better sound than my Galaxy S7. Loud and clear.
Tested in store and it is way quieter than the XL version. I was disappointed and tried other stores with the same results.
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I think this is a nice video to watch. The video shows there isn't much difference between the 3 and the 3xl. Way better then the rest and last year's pixels though.
https://youtu.be/PkpaDKSAwVo
Coming from a pixel 1 to this... yeah the speakers are way better. I was using DuoLingo on speaker while cooking and could clearly understand what was being said without needing it cranked all the way up.
I used my Plantronics BackBeat Fit Bluetooth headphones for the first time with the Pixel 3 yesterday while I was walking. They're *much* louder and the audio is better quality than with my old Nexus 5. I wasn't expecting that, but I'm happy.
I tested the ring tone speaker volume and they were very weak but a UTube video was loud.
Has anyone added custom ringtones that match the media volume?
Wheres the outrage on the phone ring volume, first and formost this is a phone. If you cant hear the thing ring what good is your phone. Demand that the fix this problem. What does it tell you that a media sound is louder that your ring tone?
Speaker is clear, but speakerphone volume is not as loud as my Nexus 6 was.

The notification, ringtone and alarm volumes are abysmally low. In anything but a totally silent environment, they are not loud enough to be hear if the phone is in a pocket or purse. I submitted a request for this on Google Issue Tracker website
https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/121304984 (sorry, you'll need to copy and paste - new users can't post hyperlinks)
but it was ultimately rejected as "won't fix (intended behavior)".
These sounds only emit from the bottom speaker by design. This was the development team's response:
"This is "speaker safe" mode, in which any sounds that could surprise the user shouldn’t go blasting out of the main speaker. As the user reported, one implementation is using secondary speaker instead of the one in the ear area. We appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately as of now, we will need to decline this as "working as intended"."
This is unacceptable, since it should only be implemented when the user has the phone to his/her ear when on a voice call.
Otherwise these sounds should emanate from both speakers to provide the necessary volume.

Speakerphone is decent. It is one speaker at the bottom but it is pretty loud and quality is OK. Sound is clear but not harsh.
I`m not gonna lie, I liked more the front stereo speakers of my old HTC One E9+. But yes, the sound is loud and crystal clear enough to making me feel good.
The important thing is that I can hear when it rings across two doors and rooms so no more missed calls for me.
As loudspeaker in call mode is good enough to use it in average crowded zone.
Hello all,
My friend bought this phone, she says the sound is very low, when she is using the loud speaker or the headphones, in both cases she says the sound is very low.
One more note: she says one click before raising the volume to maximum sound is still low .. then raising volume to maximum is quite high and good.
It is like that? Do she have to replace her device?
Since you are the only two who posted here, can you give me your opinion please? @rumpelst , @Belgarionbg
Thanks in advance.
Let see. It depends.
For example when I`m watching videos in youtube volume regulation is really smooth. It`s working ok with youtube vanced as well with gettube.
In video players like mx player, km player and the integrated one the volume regulation is normal - each step makes effective change.
For audio players like PlayerPro and Poweramp everything works ok as well the custom option in Poweramp giving additional volume steps.
But in some sites while watching videos I have also noticed the fact that there is almost no noticeable change in the volume up to the last three or two clicks on the volume buttons.
Mostly news sites tho. I don`t know what kind of player code they are using but it really does strange things with the volume. And if I download the video and play it in the phone there is no problem. It`s really strange.
I have also tested it how it plays from different clouds. I use google drive, onedrive and dropbox. There is absolutely no problem with direct video/audio streaming from them and the volume control is behaving the way it should.
====
As for the ringtones, notifications sounds and etc if I have a problem is that they can`t be turned as low as I want them sometimes.
====
Somehow I missed { headphones } in your post in the first reading. Now that is not normal, I think, at least for me.
I mentioned for low volume problems in some news sites but that is only when is on speaker, if I insert my headphones the problem goes away.
The max sound level for my headphones as actually high and I can only tolerate it up to ~80%, over that it goes high enough to feel pain.

For me the sound is excellent for being a mobile phone, have not tested all phones that claims to have great sound so cannot compare, but to me this phone has great quality and can play loud. The stereo speakers really help!
Excellent
Sound is the best with great clarity and good bass, especially when you hold the phone in landscape the soun9 funnels straight toward you like front firing speakers. Love Dolby atmos
THIS has to be my first mobile device with the loudest speakers! It's like all my phones in the last 5 years all played at the same time. Awesome!
Best speakers of any mobile phone thus far, hands down the best, the sound quality is loud & crisp & clear, pure excellence !
Best speakers out there nothing can compare

try the raze phine speakers
Outstanding, the best in-phone stereo speaker system I've ever heard. Dolby Atmos demos unbelievably good. Makes my Mate 20 Pro sound sad by comparison, unfortunately ?
I agree with the views above, the great loudspeakers and Dolby Atmos was one of the reasons for choosing the Mate 20 X. Not just for music, videos and games, but also for using it as a speakerphone for conference calls at work.

Volume will be impressive.
Ust mono speaker settings too it makes speaker fuller and louder
It really works thx!
The stereo speaker setup was one of my top criteria in favour of this phone and it hasn't failed to deliver so far.
Only Hawei has the balls to bring out bigger phones with dual speakerphone. I still can't believe it's true and to own the Mate 20X. The best 200 bucks extra spent ever instead of going for the regular Mate 20. The OLED is beautiful too! You can hear the voices and background so clear. You can try to lay it against a cushion to have more better sound. The phone is is big enough to watch content on it with the stereo speakerphone.
have anyone noticed a decreased overall sound volume after the 9.1 update ?

question about PUBG, do you get directional audio. Like i'm coming from Oneplus 5t, then Mi 9, both of which have single speakers by stock. and single speaker is very hard to play pubg with except if i have earphones. But does the mate 20 x give good enough directional audio to where you can play it without earphones?
Because for example, on Mi 9 and OP5t, even if i turn the earpiece into a secondary speaker, it's usually much quieter than the one at the bottom and hence can't be used for directional audio. And in Mi 9, earpiece is too quiet and the audio is literally just mono channel but sent out through two speakers. So both speakers always play the same thing, not true stereo. I wonder if that's the case with Mate 20 x or are there 2 seperate channels allowing for directional audio.

after the 9.1 update the sound became high and for ur question the answer is yes
when using its dual speaker u can identify from where the foot came either from right or left and even if it above u
Huawei doing excellent work n the dual speaker
Better than my Honor Note 10 with Dual Speakers
