Rooting phone after factory reset issues, advice please? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi everyone, I had my phone rooted and had TWRP, Magisk fake GPS etc all up and running so I could play a certain GPS based game.
The updated game stopped working so in trying to fix it I ended up factory resetting my phone. So a couple of things, I am trying to follow a guide but I am not sure it is best suited to my current problem. TWRP app says my phone isn't rooted any longer (factory reset?) and when I try to re root the phone I get to this screen but cannot do anything except press volume down key + power key for 7 seconds to reset.
Does it look broken? How do I start all over again with a fresh root to get my phone set up again please?

As an update I can get into recovery mode and I have TWRP options and full usability here is anybody can advise what to do now please?

Tried installing magisk via TWRP, it installed but now I am stuck on the Samsung logo as the phone is trying to boot up, I really do need some guiding here

Twrp does not detect whether your phone is rooted or not.
What guide did you follow?
Stuck at which Samsung logo ( Samsung powered by Android or Samsung with blue led light) and how long did you wait?
Being from a factory reset your phone is probably re-encrypted so you will have to format data and flash no Verity zip again.

All worked well until yesterday when a pokemon update downloaded. So I reverted the game file back a build and it worked again.
Then today I had a notification saying there is a magisk update, in magisk manager it says ""Magisk is not installed. Latest v18.1 (18100)"". Then trying to boot into pokemon go the game will not launch as my software is incompatible.
So basically I figured I will do a phone factory reset and set it all up again with the edited guide since the updates and I am now running into errors. I have managed to since get into the phone and can get into TWRP recovery again but I cannot get magisk to instal, this is my question on reddit and where I am at currently...
Hello everyone,
I am having huge issues here. I was using the pinned guide from here method for around 6 weeks until today. I set my phone back to factory settings as I had a lot of issues. Phone is as new now but TWRP is still installed as a recovery mode available. I am on a samsung galaxy s8.
Whenever I try to install Magisk via TWRP flashing method I get "install magisk failed to mount '/data' (no such process)"
If I reset the phones file system so try EXT 2,3 etc and eventually set it back on EXT 4 then magisk installs seemingly but then my phone resets to factory and I do not see magisk anywhere once setting my phone up again.
Then if I install magisk manager it says "Magisk is not installed. Latest v18.1 (18100)"
I cannot do anymore to get set up until I get magisk going again.
Please can anybody advise?

Can't help with pokemon as I don't play it
In regards with twrp/magisk after you factory reset your phone would have re-encrypted itself so in twrp you will have to format data reboot back into twrp flash the no Verity zip and magisk again.
Note: Once phone is up and running with root I would do a twrp backup first then try your Pokemon guide so if you run into troubles you can restore from backup.

Format device in twrp, flash magisk, flash DM Verity zip and it will boot

[Q] soft Bricked with twrp recovery

Ok today I rooted my lg g2 installed twrp all fine. Then I decided to install the new kit kat Rom. All ready to go went to wipe everything to start a clean install then stupidly wiped the internal storage too. So can't restore back up and can't install the blasted Rom. Phone will get as far as the lg logo. I can get into recovery but usb mounting doesn't work and Adb sideload will not start. If I try to use Adb push it says nothing is attached. Odd thing is the storage left being reported in twrp is just over 10 gig and it is a 16 gig phone so I thought it should be more. I know if it is booting into recovery there is hope but I'm stumped . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to flash your variant older ROM/radio . 16GB phone should have around 11-12GB as free
TWRP OTG to load rom
I was using the d80010d_to_20c.zip firmware + SuperSu.zip + TWRP 2.7.0.0.zip.
i.e. "kitkat" with a custom recovery and root.
I had only the 3 above zips on the phone.
d80010d_to_20c.zip contains the kk_system and a custom kk_kernel, no bootloader.
The bootloader came from the LGFlashTool and a d80010d.tot file on my laptop.
After taking the April 8 OTA from AT&T, my phone was stuck in recovery.
Could not get into download mode or use ADB.
I made the mistake of wiping my phone hoping to get download mode to work.
I should have used the terminal in TWRP and typed:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
which has been reported to work. After wiping the phone it was too late for this.
I was stuck in TWRP 2.7.0.0 which has OTG capability, so I loaded a usb flash drive with d800_Kitkat.zip,
connected it to my phone via an OTG cable, and copied d800_Kitkat.zip to the sdcard using TWRP.
Then flashed it using TWRP. I also flashed SuperSU.zip before booting to system. I'm back to stock Kitkat + root.
I'm hoping someone with Kitkat + root reports whether the April 8 AT&T OTA works on a rooted phone.
We know it fails badly on a custom recovery phone with Jellybean bootloader/custom Kitkat kernel/Kitkat system.
AT&T claims that it just updates Google+, Google Wallet, and makes Google Hangouts the default messaging app
which sounds safe but isn't.
if you can get in recovery then you should also be able to get into donwload mode. Have you tried flashing a kdz for your phone through the lg flash tool?

I can confirm root on AT&T new ota is fully functional. No problems thus far. I haven't tried a custom recovery yet though

Giving up for today will try again t I tomorrow
ok now this is getting silly. I managed eventually by using Koush's drivers to get adb to work and got cm11 working. Whoopee at least the phone works. So I make a backup. then wipe remembering this time to check the backup works. Then install new 4.4 rom. Restarts but then the touch screen input is all over the place so I can't get anything to work. Ok fine go back to recovery and restore from backup.
But noooooooooooo:crying: The flipping TWRP Recovery has gone. I can get as far as the phone saying it is going to install TWRP and reboot, but it doesn't and doesn't. The KDZ files I've found don't seem to work and the part on the lg support tool that starts updating the phone after you have changed to Korean does zip zilch nada. I can get into download mode.
So is there a CM or lightweight kdz file I can try rather than these 2 gig monstrosities?
Any idea why R and D Test tool doesn't work? I've followed instructions and videos?
Why do I do this every time I get a new phone, it was fine I could have waited but no I had to go and tinker
I know this is fixable because I can get into a software installation but I am stumped at the moment.
Any sort of help or pointing to other tutorials would be greatly appreciated.
fixed
Wow what a kerfuffle. After all that I am back to a stock 4.2 Rom with bloat but I don't care the thing works.

[Q] Trying to update to ANK2

Hello,
I am trying to root a Verizon s5. I read the directions and I thought it was going to be pretty simple.
I started with SM-G9000V
4.4.4
G900VVRU1ANK2
I flashed G900V_NCG_Stock_Kernel.tar and worked fine. Towl/su worked great.
Then it says to flash G900V_NK2_Stock_Kernel_.tar and that is where it gets bad. It says in odin it finished but it will not boot again. It goes right to stock recovery. I try to reboot and it just hangs on samsung then goes back to stock recovery. The only way to get it to booted again is to run G900VVRU1ANCG_Full_Odin.rar.
I am rooted and all is fine but I cant do a back up because I cant get safestrap to work. That is a whole other story. I am looking for a way to get him back to 4.4.4.

After you root, and SuperSU (update its binaries and reboot) you need to install busybox from the play store, open it and install it. After that, safestrap will install. After safestrap is installed, Odin the firmware of your choice. When your phone starts to boot up, safestrap recovery option will show. Click on the recovery button and install the rooted ROM (which you should have already on your phone) that matches the firmware you flashed in Odin.
Here is NK2 stock rooted ROM.

If you don't mind starting over, flash this tar instead.

Re-root with towelroot, install SuperSU from play store. Update its binaries and reboot. Download busybox from play store and install. Install safestrap, install its recovery. Boot into recovery to see if it works.
Going to try that Monday. Thnaks!~
I just tried it using flashfire instead of Odin and without safestrap (but you do have to be rooted). This worked for me but I am no expert. Just a hacker that is willing to try about anything, ha,ha.
Install flashfire (found at the top of this post). http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...w-to-update-to-g900voc4-5-0-keeproot-t3068546
Download to your phone the rooted stock ROM and corresponding firmware of your choice from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/development/ne9-stock-rom-t2878981
Open flashfire. Hit the plus button. Select firmware and navigate to the firmware you downloaded. Select boot and recovery. Click the check mark in the upper right hand corner. Hit the plus sign and select zip or ota. Navigate to where you put the rooted ROM. Leave auto mount unchecked.. Hit the check mark. Hit the plus sign and select firmware again. Navigate back to where you put the firmware and this time select boot, recovery, modem, and firmware. Flashfire will ask if you want these in separate flashes. Say yes. Hit the plus sign again. Select wipe. Check everything but SD card. Now arrange everything in this order (drop and drag).
Wipe
Firmware-boot & recovery
Zip-rooted ROM
Firmware-modem & firmware
Firmware-boot & recovery
Ever root - inject SuperSU
Reboot- normal
Hit the lightening bolt to start process. When done you should be on the stock rooted firmware you chose. Again, I just tried this myself and it worked for me but try it at your own risk. I'm just a hacker and not an expert like these other guys.

[STOCK][N][ARB01] H830 20N ZIPs + KDZ (2017-12-01 Security Patch)

First off, a HUGE thank you to @autoprime (for paving the way) and @waylo (for his assistance on getting this going after I found the KDZ)
I am currently storing these in my google drive account, so please be gentle till I have a better host location:
Below are the downloads for the LG-H83020N firmware
Folder with all the LG830 firmware I have so far:
LG830 (G5)
LG-H83020N-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip
As always, COMPLETE is 100% stock
Flash COMPLETE zip -> wipe cache partition -> flash Magisk ZIP (or SuperSU if you insist) to root and keep TWRP
OPTIONAL: After flashing, remount /system RW -> delete recovery-from-boot.p to guarantee TWRP sticks
LG-H83020N-Flashable.Bootloader-ARB01
LG-H83020N-Flashable.Modem-ARB01.zip
LG-H83020N-Flashable.Boot.zip
H830N_00_1017.kdz (HUGE Thank you to @Azul Baseem for the upload)
For instructions, follow the same instructions as you would in any other KDZ/ZIP thread. For Example
Feel free to hit thanks.
Also feel free to hit up autoprime's All in One thread HERE
Thank you very much bedwa!
Kdz link updated!
Thank you @bedwa as always.
I fear my only true contribution here is MD5 confirmation of the files:
LG-H83020N-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip 8a49733028bef23d775bf542eb62b726
LG-H83020N-Flashable.Boot.zip ddea9d814f66266de34a154f0c7f6b41
H830N_00_1017.kdz 732b717af8d77501342be445002c4fae
Edit: Also, since someone will definitely miss it in the title, this is confirmed to still be on Anti-Rollback 1. You're free to flash back and forth between 20A if you need to Dirtycow your phone again.
Keeping me honest, I swear I'll remember them next time.
Thanks for the upload. I was able to update just fine thanks to this.
BTW... It still has H83020m mentioned in the body of the OP instead of H83020n.

That would be trickier. All of these are the partition images. To make a slim zip like that I'll have to either unpack and build or unpack and attempt to repack. I might, but not likely at this time.
Thank you so much for making this. So happy to be rooted and on the latest build thanks to your hard work. =)

I am running on rooted H83020a with TWRP and SuperSU installed. In order to upgrade to 20N by keeping all my current settings and data along with root and TWRP, what are the steps should I follow?
1. Take a complete backup using LG Backup
2. Boot into TWRP
3. Flash Complete Zip (H83020N) from TWRP
4. Flash SuperSU Zip
5. Reboot System
6. Restore the complete backup from LG Backup
Does this work okay? Or, do I need to do anything else, like Wipe Data/Partition etc.? Sorry for the noob question.
Hello,
If I flash boot and bootloader, will it lock my bootloader and brick the phone if I am on LineageOS?

Backup is always good, shouldn't have to restore it as it's updating from a previous version and doesn't wipe data when upgrading. But that's the correct process with or without #6.

Shouldn't, but it would always be a good idea to backup beforehand. I would however only flash the bootloader, as the boot is the kernel and will be different than what LineageOS uses though.
I just boot into TWRP and flashed the complete zip and then flashed the latest SuperSU Zip. I pressed Reboot System after that, but, I am now stuck in a boot loop. Phone shows LG logo and reboots again and again.
I tried the Power button + Vol Down method, but, it doesn't work too. It gets to Factory reset screen, and after Yes and Yes, it goes to back to boot loop again. I am able to get into Download Mode and Fastboot Mode. Can I do something from here?
Can someone help please? Anyway to get into TWRP or recovery?
Sounds like you will need to LGUP or Uppercut your phone back to stock 20A. Then dirtycow back TWRP. Then try flashing the new ZIP again. Skip Supersu this time and try Magisk instead.
Thanks. I flashed back to 20A using LGUP and KDZ file. Need to dirtycow back TWRP now. I'm still wondering what went wrong in my process.

Do I need to reboot to TWRP once after flashing instead of Reboot System directly after flash? Any idea?
No, rebooting into TWRP wouldn't do anything. There's a script you might need to get into and delete prior to rebooting. But that only ensures that TWRP stays.
"After flashing, remount /system RW -> delete recovery-from-boot.p to guarantee TWRP sticks"
That having been said, I've done this before and STILL not had TWRP stay. Some recommend wiping /cache as well.
OR, again, use Magisk instead and don't use SuperSU.
Even if TWRP didn't stick, you should have been booting into system fine. You wouldn't be rooted, TWRP would be gone, but system shouldn't have been messed up. So something got borked, I'd have to guess, because of SuperSU.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite [WIFI] soft bricked after install TWRP Recovery

Hello everyone.
I have Rooted my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 lite WIFI successfully, then I tried to flash the recovery with TWRP to install LineosOS, but after flashing with TWRP I can't boot the system anymore and it just turns into Download Mode with an error on the screen.

CUSTOM RECOVERY
VMMETA P610XXX.......
My Samsung Galaxy Tab s6 lite still recognize via USB to my PC and ODIN too.
I've tried to install the Stock AP with ODIN, but it didn't work.
Can this damage still be repaired? or it is already a Soft bricked with no solution?
Thanks!
I had a similar issue but I used this to fix it

I trieded both Software but this could not solve my problem.
One thing that you should probably know is that development of TWRP for the S6 Lite was stopped due to various issues, and the developer has no interest in resuming. If/when you get the issue with your tablet resolved, you'll have to flash and use LineageOS recovery to install LineageOS, Magisk, GApps, etc.

Hold on....are you saying that the Lineage Recovery can be used instead of TWRP?? I was under the impression that TWRP had to be installed to use Lineage? It didnt escape me that there was a Lineage recovery file, but since everything i read insisted TWRP recovery had to be used I just kept on trying to install it (failing every time...definition of insanity).
OP.....I have soft bricked and reinstalled the stock ROM on my device literally DOZENS of times trying to install TWRP....are you absolutely sure you have the correct one for your device? Maybe the stoc ROM you have has a glitch in it? If you are positive that you have a S6 lite, wifi only, pm me and maybe i can send you a copy of my stock ROM? If i can help i will gladly pay it forward.

Yup, it certainly can. LOS Recovery is pretty basic compared to TWRP, but it supports the S6 Lite's SD card as well as USB OTB and ADB sideloading. You have to flash one file at a time, though, and every time you access the card it starts at the root directory (rather than remembering the last directory you were in), but those are minor annoyances. Also, flashing Magisk will trigger a warning regarding file signing, but you can override it and it'll work just fine (just wanted to FYI this bit). I truly wish we had a fully functioning TWRP, but since we don't, LOS Recovery will have to do.

You are my hero! I am sending this from my tablet with a SUCCESSFULLY installed Lineage OS. I LOVE not having all the Samsung crap taking up space. I have an SD card installed and formatted but have yet to it anything on it. Question though...what would installing Magisk do to improve the tablet performance?

Nothing. The main reason to install Magisk is if you were going to root your tablet. If you aren't going to do that, Magisk offers very little benefit, thus you can safely skip it.
Glad to hear you got LOS installed and running! It certainly does breathe new life into the S6 Lite.
