I'm sick of waiting around for the Samsung Note 10.1" and I really want a device with great stylus support. I have owned ThinkPads in the past (when they were IBM) and from the reviews it seems like most peoples problems with this device were software, not hardware related. I've owned 3 other android devices, always rooted and loaded custom ROMs on them but I am seeing a lot less development activity and choice here. So some questions:
1) I will probably order from Amazon, 32GB w/ stylus. Not sure if it will come with ICS aka 4.0.3 aka OTA3 (I think?). If it does there is currently no way to root it correct?
2) I see there are a few rooting methods, packages, apps, etc. I am getting really confused about which ones are for which device & image (K1, TPT, ROW, JP, etc). Is there a "go to" guide for this specific device?
3) Are there any AOSP ROMs available? If not, how much junk/bloat comes with Lenovo's images?
4) I am looking to use this for business, mostly note taking and diagramming. The stylus input is the *biggest* factor for me and I want it to be smoooooooth. Am I making the right purchase?

I think from what you've read on the forum YOU know you are making the wrong purchase but you're sick of waiting. Then Of course by all means pls get a tpt. That impatience of yours will be tested when you have to send the tablet for a few weeks to repair the broken usb/power button/volume button. The pen is NOT smooth-it develops a mind of its own after writing for a few mins. I'm also sorry to say that development on this tablet is DEAD. There were gallant efforts by koshu and Co but lenovo has proved that they are against development of any kind. Even updates from lenovo are a pain in the backside especially if u somehow had root or Cwm recovery. It's very difficult to learn from other people's mistakes until you make yours then you'd wish you been patient and saved a few hundred dollars

1) Correct, as of now.
2) Not applicable for a device you purchase that has ICS already loaded - which it will.
3) See 2 above.
4) You really have no option to the TPT if you're looking for a primarily business-oriented tablet, or one with an active digitizer pen. There aren't really any other tablets around that are designed to be anything other than entertainment toys.

I guess I was basing my impressions of the pen from this video: http://youtu.be/prqFXRFHbPE It looks like it has some quirks but for the most part these are software issues. I know I am running a risk buying something that is already out-dated, but I feel like the device still has potential with the right software and a price tag under $400.
I appreciate both of your replies but I guess I am no closer to figuring this out and should put off my purchase for another few months to see what else is in the pipeline. I wish there was more video and coverage of the stylus input on the new windows tablets.
I have been waiting *years* for the right tablet with pen input to come along. I do not understand how people deny that a market exists for these devices. I'm not even in school anymore (been hoping for this type of device since my first year of university) but if I was, as a science major the ability to draw and sketch ideas and diagrams, not to mention annotate PDFs/reading material, and have digital copies of my textbooks... it just all seems so obvious. As a web developer I am still constantly sketching out ideas and concepts and *cannot* take notes with a keyboard. I am a visual and tactile learner and the subtle underlines and annotations of my notes make all the difference.

Welcome to the TPT forums!
First of all, this tablet has a very low dev support hence you might have to wait for a long time to be able to root your device and load custom roms. As for now, there is a user who has compiled AOSP jelly bean on his TPT which is partially working. So my point is that things are happening in the dev center but at a very slow pace.
If you are buying this tablet to make diagrams and sketches then I would highly recommend it. The plus points of the TPT is that the hardware is really solid. I unfortunately dropped it a couple of times (well my friends dropped it) from a considerable height and there are no scratches or dents and the tablet works just great hence its pretty well built. Having a full sized USB is a great deal maker for me, being a university student, helps me rally data to old systems real quick.
As far as pen capabilities are concerned, there are quite a few apps that will make great use of it. Like the apps named quill,lecture notes etc will definitely be great for the device. I personally take notes on quill and i must say that the tablet lives upto my expectations. I have virtually replaced pen and paper with it. After the ICS update, the device is pretty snappy and the general UI experience has improved great folds from the honeycomb times.
I never rooted my tablet and never felt the need of doing so, cause like I said, after the ICS update the device is much faster thanks to custom launchers and disabling certain vendor apps. The main reason why i bought this tablet was to take notes and it has surpassed my expectations.
So if sketching is the main use instead of multimedia experience, then go for it. It is a practical device.

Hey there, just a quick summary of what the different versions mean:
US,ROW,WE etc is the region of the device.
TPT is the thinkpad tablet
K1 is an entirely different Lenovo tablet, with no pen support. As far as I can tell, the two are not compatible (ROMs etc.) I'm pretty sure that K1 activity is routed here because there is no dedicated forum for it.
I hope to write a guide for the device shortly. There is not much development going on but that does not mean it is dead. Devs are working on various (very alpha) ports of CM9 and AOSP JB, and the official lenovo update is apparently very nice (including making the pen even better to use )
In terms of bloat, lenovo does add quite a few annoying apps, but luckily most can be uninstalled without root.
I bought a 32GB ROW (because I'm in canada). I have been using NVflash and am able to flash roms without the use of CWM, which could turn out to be our salvation. It looks like US tablets have NVflash disabled. I don't know if this means all ROW tablets are unlocked, but I haven't heard of anyone with an ROW tablet not having NVflash access. ( I also haven't looked very hard)
Stay tuned, I have a feeling there will some nice breakthroughs on this tablet eventually

1) Probably you will get Honeycomb version. I do not believe there is anyone upgrading the stock. And probably no ICS loaded devices were made (seems like production stopped some time ago).
2) Hard to tell, as it is unclear which version Amazon is selling. But generally if you have some basic experience, you will make it.
3) There is no working aftermarket ROM. But after upgrade to ICS the situation is a lot better. Using alternative launcher ignoring the Lenovo SW can make the job.
4) I bought it for the same reason. More than HW you fight the SW looking for the best app to make your notes. The Lenovo SW is not usable. And every alternative I tried has some issues.
I clearly understand your dilemma. I doubt that waiting for Samy Note tablet will satisfy you, as this will be the first Samy experience with pen ... I expect a lot of problems, which Lenovo somehow solved till now with ICS release.
I was buying it as replacement for old Lenovo Windows tablet with pen. Especially in combination with OneNote it was great tool ... but it was old, heavy and broken by years of use.
After some time, I got used to this tablet, and I do not use notebook going to client. There TPT can make the job. For other more demanding work I have standard "big" PC.
Of course ... if you buy TPT you will have to accept some "features" like slow charging without full power off (and cold boot after charge), or sometimes frozen unlocking touch till you do not pull the pen of. I don't know how you, but I can live with these problems .
Generally. There is NO device with ANY operating system, which can satisfy needs of me and probably you. Having electronic alternative for paper and pen.
Anyway I'm more satisfied with current status than with lot of papers, where I usually I was not able to find the note I needed
If you need such device, go for TPT a use to live with it. Not perfect, but probably the best available.
Galaxy Note 10.1
Woohoo, the galaxy note 10.1 has been officially announced for release later this month. If you have waited this long, a couple of weeks shouldn't bee too much. As for me, I'm simply salivating at the specs - Quad core processor, wifi+3g versions, 7000mAh battery, 1200 x 800 display; weighing in at approx 600g (way lighter than the ipad). Oh and you can bet that samsung's pen will be far better than the horrific stylus on the thinkpad (just ask galaxy note users). Having had a galaxy s2/s3, I know that samsung products are extremely easy to root, mod update, etc; unlike the thinkpad where even updating is a pain. All in all, I'm elated that I can finally toss out this piece of garbage that lenovo put out. Infact, if someone offers me 100pounds for my thinkpad, I'll toss it to them with some change.

I've searched around the forum and haven't seen anything related to this, so I thought I'd create a thread and ask in case anyone knew.
I was interested in purchasing the Geeksphone Revolution and was wondering if a Firefox 2.0 build existed for it? I see there is a a 2.0 build for the Peak and Keon, but those are not available for purchase. So would I be stuck on 1.3 if I got the Geeksphone or would someone have a build that could be loaded onto the Geeksphone Revolution?

to be honestly - I hate the developers of the Geeksphone. For several reasons:
1. The Android Project is just ****ed up - no USB drivers for PC / MAC (really, you have to put out the SD to copy data!)
2. in the beginning the battery had huge drainage - it just held not even a day (after some updates it's okay and useable!)
3. There are no updates since more than a month. In the beginning there were plenty updates for both systems - every week for android! Now I think they stopped the support.. don't know why
4. Firefox OS has plenty bugs, too - that's why no one uses it. No apps is not a bug - but the hardware keys always shine (that's a battery drainer without purpose - I mean under Android they go off after not touching them. Under FFOS they always stress me). Also other smaller bugs..
5. The most interesting feature - Dual boot - there is no actual dual boot (and never will be) - you can only use and flash 1 OS. Android or FireFox os.. or other os. =>
6. Other OS ? There are no other os! I am really sad that I bought a phone with the ability to flash other OS and there are no! You simply can use 2 buggy OS, none of them are really special or work perfectly.
7. The screen resolution of the phone isn't really nice and bright. I can't understand how they did this. Not even 720p. You can count the pixels in nearly every app..
8. No new updates any more ?! Mhh, don't know but no support from Hackers, no support from Geeksphone themselves - no Android, no FFOS updates (okay they said they would release FFOS 2.0 - but I believe there are still like no APPS in the store, probably other bugs, too but didn't test it).. and no OTHER OS! Okay, you have the ability but if no one releases one - that's a pity!
9. No accessories - you can get a pouch for this phone, but no better batteries, no other things.. I didn't even found replacement screen or something (don't need one, just in case)..
To be honestly - simply get another phone. Maybe Jollaphone, or Fairphone (which may get open webos support or firefox or others as well), or wait for Neo900 (Nokia N900 case with better hardware) or something else.
If you are fine with all those problems and bugs - then go ahead and buy one.
I'm just an honest user.. currently I use my HP Pre 3, Huawei Mate, Galaxy Camera as everyday devices, the Geeksphone more or less for spair and for music outside or something..

Wow, everything that you said is quite interesting. I honestly don't care too much if there are bugs since Android has always had issues (and I'm talking official releases. That's why there are so many updates and each device can't guarantee it works because between Android changes, and hardware manufacturers customizations...it's a giant mess). I currently have a Open ZTE with a prerelease of FFOS 1.3 so like I said, a few bugs isn't a big deal.
No usb drivers is just plain silly though. Seriously that's pretty dumb :\

I hadn't heard of Sailfish OS either. looks very interesting. I really am interested in FireFox OS though and I'd love to keep using it and watch it mature It really has great potential. That's why I thought it woul dbe nice to have something that allows me to switch between OS. I'm happy to consider other alternatives, so please anyone, keep the suggestions coming

Wow, it seems i bought a nono... it seems no one has it or ever heard of it...
It does indeed seem that way. Since it runs "real" Windows you can probably use something like BlueStacks on it? Actually installing Android (and having it work) will require driver support in Android which may not exist; even fairly popular Windows tablet lines like the Surface Pro family have driver troubles in Android.
I've been doing a lot of research on this tablet. Ended up picking up a refurb for $250, and with 64GB I'd like to do a dual boot if possible.
However, looking at Wikipedia, there isn't a single tablet with the Atom Z2760 with Android. They're all running Windows 8.

I'm an amateur developer, finishing up my CS degree this Spring. If someone more experienced than me thinks this is actually possible, I'll look into trying to make it happen. If there are any resources that may be relevant, post them or send me a PM.
I own a Samsung ATIV Tab 3 as well. I have not been using it since after updating to windows 10 it has become extremely slow. On the other hand I really like the pen and its responsiveness.
Have you found any way to install android or another light OS?
Ideally I would like to utilize the device as a digital notepad.
Currently, there are Bliss OS or Prime OS but I am testing Prime OS, I don't expect straightforward and easy installation but let's hope for the best...

Android OS is dynamic (I'd say unstable ?). The device you are buying today might become older enough in a couple of months in terms of the Android version. However if you're lucky to have a truly rich and supporting community, your device will be alive for an eternity.
In the revolution of Android ecosystem, you would possibly like to upgrade your device after major Android updates. Or you have to be satisfied and hanker after the newer Android features otherwise.
Now it's time to share mine ?. I got a local, cheap Jellybean device, when I was introduced to Android in early 2014. Now I have still that Android 4.2 device which I love more than the prettier material design or even the notification dots and others.
I have been using that device for my development purpose for a long time alongside my primary device. As I used it in my first step to Android root, mods, hacking and the system insight. I still remember the day I got this device into bootloop for the first time ?. Those days have passed away.
Now I am learning and developing Android apps. Since my laptop is even smaller than its small configuration (? You can call me a poor guy), it is quite impossible to test and debug apps on Android emulator while running Android studio in parallel with 4GB of RAM and i5. So, I started using my old friend as a helping hand in development. I keep it connected via USB while developing my apps, run and test them with it which frees nearly 700MB of RAM on my tiny machine and boost the build time also. For other Android versions, I have to do them on emulator separately ?.
What you're thinking of me I don't care ?. The phone is much more to me. Feel free to share yours...

Found this apparently interesting TV box more or less recently. It's sold at a very attractive price, and can be bought in configurations with up to 8 GiB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, so I guess that it must come with a 64-bit operating system or firmware. And well, according to “REVIEW: X88 PRO 20 a low-cost Android TV-Box with SoC Rockchip RK3566 @ AndroidpcTV”, the TV box's firmware supports the arm64_v8a ABI, so 64-bit yes.
About this box I only found the thread “X88 pro 20 RK3566” opened close to a year ago, but it contains just a confusing question and no further information.
So, may some of you provide feedback about this TV box? It looks appealing, but of course I need to be able to root it; this is the single most important factor. Once rooted, any limitations in the stock ROM can be fixed and it also is fully customizable; just hope it is stable, of course.
Can someone provide information on rooting this box? Custom firmwares?

I have one, and the only method for rooting is installing another rom, I think the rom with root is the "hk1-rbox-r2-RK3566_DC_R2_HK5235F_11_20210705.1409", but the T95 Plus and H96 Max rom also works (but it doesn't have root), other thing you can do is flash a linux debian using the tutorial described in the forum t95plus.com, but sadly my x88 pro 20 is defective, every app I open (while using android) crashes after some time, and while in linux firefox keeps crashing, I don't know what's the issue, and since so few people have this box I can't find anyone else having this problem

My interest in this box sort of vanished, mainly because I was just finding a good TV box solution to pair with an old good TV which I have lying around for someone else, and that someone else decided to buy a new inexpensive set… Of course, suffice to say these people must not be aware of the very limited Android system they are getting, or of how much better it could be.
Anyway, I digged on the subject of rooting without a custom recovery, and found the following very helpful video and article:

This pretty much enables rooting of any device with minimum hassle.
Besides this, I'd love to know if the ROM of this device is stable and works well. I understand you are probably not going to say much in this respect, GamingSoldier; unless you get a new one, that is.

I don't know if the rom is stable, because my x88 has a hardware issue that keeps making apps crash, and it's not the software because I tested multiple ROMS and all of them cause this issue, about the magisk, I already know the app, but the magisk is unable to patch the rockchip boot.img
Well GamingSoldier, it's clear that you would need to get a new RK3566 X88 Pro 20 for testing its ROM, or at least fix the problem your box has if you are able. Speaking of which, did you open the box to check inside already? Because the problem could be something simple to fix like improper SoC cooling or some electronic component. After all, if the box doesn't works there's nothing to lose in doing so except a little bit of time and effort.
Concerning Magisk not being able to patch the RK3566 boot.img (sure?), I was going to say that you could say something in this respect in the Magisk thread, although I see it was closed long ago. So, the best thing to do is to inquire topjohnwu directly about Magisk's support for Rockchip SoCs, I guess. There's also topjohnwu's GitHub page with further information and etcetera.
And now that we're here I am not going to say that these boxes probably suck in certain ways, although I could. A working hardware matters, and proper working software matters too.
A tad off topic, very recently I've been checking the Orange Pi 5 Plus, for whatever reason. It uses a far more powerful and fully fledged Rockchip RK3588 SoC, and I see it somewhat below $200 (or even a hair below $180!) in 16 GiB of RAM configuration and including USB-C power supply. It clearly is something in another league, and very recently got new Android 12 images for SD card boot and fast 2280 M.2 NVMe storage boot; and it has accessible source code, which is very important developer wise.
It's a lot more money to spend at, but it also is a real Android computer which you can attach to TVs or monitors…
First thing I did after the apps started closing was to open the box and I added a bigger heatsink, I also tried increase the SOC voltage to see if it was a low voltage issue, and if I'm not mistaken I also tested the ram while I was using linux, and still, a paper weight...
After I discovered this issue and was unable to fix it I started to flash any RK3566 or RK3568 rom in to my x88 pro 20, most of them appear the logo screen, but are stuck in that image, I don't know much about these rom's, but might be just one thing or two preventing me from booting into the system
