What to do with old Galaxy Tab 4 - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there. My elderly father spilled wine all over his fire tablet and asked me to dig up his old Galaxy Tab 4 as a replacement. I haven't rooted or ROM'd in quite a while (My Pixel 2XL doesn't really need a better OS so I leave it alone) but this old Tab 4 is a dinosaur and could probably use an upgrade. The Samsung UI, for one, is atrocious.
Any ideas on what I should do to bring it up to speed? It's a GT-P5210 on KitKat 4.4.2.
Would an upgrade to Nougat/Oreo/Pie help performance or is the hardware too old? Any suggestions on a particular ROM?
I appreciate your help!

i have an old samsung tab 4 and am in the same situation here. I`m not a really expert in this area, but I really appreciate it if anyone could get a solution about what to do with this device.

What is your main purpose for purchase? does screen quality matter?
Why are these two even ditectly compared? One is a 7" tablet, the other is a phone. So what are you looking for? A tablet or a phone?

One is a phone, one is a tablet. Pointless question really.
You will be forever updated with the nexus

One is a phone, one is a tablet phone if you get the 3G version like I did. It replaced my SGS2. I had the same decision to make. The number one question to ask yourself then is if you need a device in your POCKET all day to be contacted on. The answer for my life currently, is no. My tab goes from home to my car to my office desk. I also carry it in my jacket pocket when I must (like when I'm in town without my wife and may need to be contacted) but for practicality reasons I'm murse shopping for when summer comes around.
A good test I did myself is see if you have a way or mind carrying a book or notepad of similar size for a week. It made no impact on my life, so I got the tab. I completely understand this doesn't work for a lot of people though, you just need to find out what your needs are (pro/con list to the rescue!).
ps, there are other things to consider too of course. The Nexus has a better camera and direct OS updates from the mother land. Everything else as far as I'm concerned goes towards a 3g Tab 7.7.
To each his own!

Look like you want a combination phone and tablet I think. That's the reason why you make that comparison.
If you have a phone you would like to get a Galaxy tab 7.7 then. If you dont have a phone I would suggest you the galaxy nexus. Or you might think obout galaxy NOTE. It's very unconvenient to use tab 7.7 as a phone.
I have a HTC sensation XE and a tablet 7.7. If i only have to choose one i would like to get galaxy NOTE. It's a 5.3 inches phone.
Wait until the official announcement of the Galaxy S3, the Nexus will be about $150 cheaper then as it will be a forgotten phone when that beast comes out.

Greetings xda! General Question here about the ATT Galaxy Tab SGH

Quite the interesting forum, a friend of mine recommended me here for all my Android needs. A brief story is as of last Sunday I'm a proud owner of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. After 4 years of using the Iphone I decided to convert to Android So far so good, although still getting used to the OS. It looks fairly simple, and more modifiable than the Iphone 4 which is good.
Passing on to the issue.
Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-i717 Galaxy Tab
I already rooted the phone it was quite simple Although don't really know the full potential of it or what I can actually do. Is it only just for changing OS roms?
I've been lurking through the forums regarding those different OS roms I can add after rooting, specially to get rid of those pesky AT&T annoying apps.
But I haven't found a you could say, convincing one in the threads. and I don't know which ones are the good, popular ones with the lesser bugs that work good with the Galaxy Tab.
I would appreciate it a lot if you guys could lead me to the right direction.
Thank you very much!
And pardon me for my noobness
wrong forum.
SGH-i717 is an AT&T Galaxy Note, not a Galaxy Tab.

[Q] Which Android tab should I buy? galaxy tab or note?

Hi not sure if im in the right place however im in the market to buy an Android Tab, i own an ipad 3 but my wife wants a Samsung Tab and im unsure which to go for, does anyone have any suggestion?
She specificly wants a Samsung but im unsure of the difference between the Note and the Tab2 any help would be appreciated.
Note. Tab 2 is like Tab without LED Flash.
Tab 2 would be a much better option.

And why would Tab 2 be a better option? I have tried the tab 2 over a period of time and i must say that compared to the Note 10.1 it sucks, big time!
I have a N8000 and its easily the best tablet i ever touched. I have owned several tabs (Transformer,Folio, Vega, GT-P7500 and some more) and some are good but nothing compares to the Note 10.1.

You must be trolling! Anybody would prefer a quad core processor, two gigabytes of ram, and a five megapixel camera over basically the same specs of the tab 10.1 that the tab 2 10.1 has.

Neither one of them.
About the iPad, I don't even want to talk about it or any other iBullshett from Crapple. If you are one of the Apple fanboys, by all means please buy it and get out of here.
And now the Galaxy Tab. I have one and I wouldn't recommend anyone else to buy it. Talk about specs, Galaxy Tab isn't the best tablet out there, in fact it only has a dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM and very poor screen resolution which lead to poor performances and speed.
But all that still doesn't annoy me as much as Samsung's lack of proper support for 3rd party development. ICS has been release to the public almost a year ago and here we are still desperately waiting. Sure you can flash some custom ROMs to have a taste of it, but thing is, none of those ROMs has a fully functional camera due to the lack of the required driver which Samsung doesn't want to release. The same thing is happening to the Galaxy S3 now, it might take years before S3 users can get the Project Butter (which has already been launched) to their phone. But this is kinda offtopic so I don't want to talk much about it. All I want to say is: due to Samsung's crappy support, stay away from its products.
What I'd recommend you for now is Google's Nexus 7. It's Google's very own tablet so you can be sure that you'll always be up to date.
I'll advice you to go with ipad 3.
I've my tab and my friend has ipad.
Comparing both.... Ipad is way better than 10.1
Incase you want android, go for nexus 7,note 10.1, or Asus infinity pad

I don't know what some of these guys are talking about but my tab 10.1 works great for me, even being almost 2 year old technology. I love this tab almost as much as my s3, almost
Anyway, here's a video breakdown of the 2 side by side to give you an idea of what you're looking at:

In my opinion, iPads are toys. Great for entertainment but if you want something that is close to a lap or desktop replacement get a Tab. Ignore Browy. The Tab 10.1 does NOT have "very poor resolution" or performance. I updated to ICS and it's plenty speedy, and there are lots of custom ROMs and tweeks to enhance it even more. something iPads will never have.
Listen to Kishorsidu and Browy. I agree with what they say. Don't buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1 it's too old. It was a good tablet when it was first released, but technology has moved on, and there are much better devices out there whether you want Android or Apple.
If you ask it this way, ipad 3, for sure! 10.1 is ****ing slow and old, and fw support is weak(official and xda)
I know there are android fanboys around that will argue against any apple product no matter what. I find this stupid and fanboyant!
I've been through Symbian, Symbian UIQ, windows mobile 5, 6, 6.5 , iOS, android, dos3.3- dos6, windows 3.11, NT, 95, 98, XP, 7, beos, os/2, all sorts of linuxes starting with slackware 3.2.
What you learn in the end is: there is no best, superior super duper ultra os. It all depends on your needs, what you expect and like!
So, go to the store and compare, read reviews and decide.
Also note, android like any linux product is a beta( even the "stable" versions). Its for people that like fiddling with stuff. This is not a bad thing! I like doing this from time to time.
If, on the other hand, you need something that just works, without being constantly kicked, pushed, rushed and fixed you might like the ipad. I dont say that iOS has no flaws and bugs, what I say is that in general, the things that apple promised, work.
Also, note that all apple devices get at least 3 years of official updates. Most android devices get forgotten in oblivion by their makers in about an year and your only hope is xda!
P.S. This is not anti-android, anti xda post! I respect all xda devs for what they are doing and I like android as a concept! I'm just expressing my view on the current situation!
regards
samsung galaxy tab 10.1 is still good unlike everyone says. you just have to make sure you don't screw with it too much installing custom roms and whatnot. i have had mine for a year and it's still amazing fast considering the fact that it's loaded with a pile of apps. don't exclude it from your choices.

this rom is amazing. get it.
The right device depends largely on what you want to do with it, and whether you're invested in either ecosystem. If you've already got a library of music/books/movies, etc. via iTunes, then the iPad is the choice. The same is true if you're invested in Google's ecosystem.
However, in terms of Android tablets, I wouldn't recommend the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (unless you're on a tight budget, because one can be had fairly cheaply)...and I say that as someone who owns one. Its not that I dislike it. On the contrary, it really does everything I need it to do. The problem is there are several newer, better tablets out now.
Probably the top 3 I'd consider (not in any order):
ASUS Transformer - Quad core Tegra 3, 1920 x 1200 resolution
Nexus 10 - 1.7 GHz Exynos, 2560 x 1600 resolution, Google reference device will be among the 1st to get updates
Galaxy Note 10.1 - S-Pen functionality is awesome and it has some other great features
You may also want to consider a MS Surface or other Windows 8 tablet.

GT-i9506 with LTE Advanced or simply the GT-i9515 VE.
I think the LG G1 is similar to the S4
The HTC M7 is the direct rival of the S4. I don't know what Motorola and Sony have to offer.
