[Q] Will the GTab get/run Honeycomb?

I have seen posts all over XDA and other forums regarding this.
Does anyone have the REAL word on this????

There has no been official word from Samsung either way. From the dev work here it is certainly capable of running Honeycomb.

I really hope so. Have been looking forward to running Honeycomb ever since it was launched. And even more so when I actually got my Tab!

Since Honeycomb is a tablet only OS my guess is the Tab will get Gingerbread instead since all the Tabs except the ones in North America officially have the phone feature. But, judging from the trend of Samsung it seems 2.2 may just be it and business wise they feel that will inspire you to spend more money on buying the new Tab or S2 to get the latest OS. But, that's just my opinion.

Well, I got the galaxy tab thinking it would at least get gingerbread.
As for Honeycomb, I think it should run OK. Even if the whole OS doesn't run, I'm sure we will at least get apks for the tablet optimised apps like gmail.
But hey, there's a new HTC 7" tablet announced with slightly better specs and it's said to get honeycomb. HTC is popular, I'm sure we can get a port from them.

their strategy might just work after a fashion...i might spend more money on a new tablet-it will just be a tablet from a manufacturer who is more committed to providing updates to existing customers. ie not samsung.

The new Tab is a 10.1" device, which makes it a completely different animal in my opinion.

IMHO Samsung dont seem to really care about it's exsisting customers only the new ones.
ive got an S and Tab and although i like both devices the lack of support winds me up, they constantly release new hardware with the latest software and seem reluctant to support what is in fact still "new" devices.
I dont buy into "you bought they device with froyo, so that's what youve got"
I expect high end hardware to be fully supported it's an insult they release a new device after 6 months without supporting the current one.
Any legit reason for not having honeycomb? No none.
I really cant see myself buying another Samsung product.

If the OEM doesn't wanna play nice and give us Gingerbread let alone Honeycomb, I'm sure the ORSUM devs here will be able to "cook" something up.
Afterall, isn't that what this forum is all about?

Some little 'savings' for Samsung
Samsung care about costumers already have. There is official 2.2.1 there are lot of other devices from other manufacturers what simply won't get 2.2... and we will get 2.3 also... Who said they don't care about costumers... New tablets are not the same category, except HTC Flyer almost all are 10 inch monster and for lot of money... Not the same race as Galaxy Tab in. We bought our device on the last quarter of year, will we rush for a new one just for Honeycomb and dual core CPU, don't think so... This is problem for Samsung? Don't think so. Will be no people in the future who change his/her device in every next quarter... If Samsung leave me alone, would we buy any new Samsung device in the future? Don't think so... Could it be a big business? Don't think so... We will see...

I would say that executive is dead wrong. This year the market will be flooded with 10" tablets running Honeycomb. As such manufacturer's need to find a way to differentiate themselves from the pack. Samsung's current Tab does that by having a smaller size and being able to make phone calls. I hope Samsung decides to make a next-gen Tab 7 to go along with their new Tab 10. I am very happy with the current Tab but I also think it could definitely benefit from a dual core processor and fast graphics engine.

I very much agree with what was said.
added note that we all know that the nook color has honeycomb running already. even though its a port of the sdk, doesn't the nook color have lesser specs than the TAB? I'm positive that we will get something made for us.Surly not by OEM, but by yours truly, the amazing devs.... after we clean up the mess in the Development Section. It looks like a 9 year old went to clean his room because his mom said so and just took all of his toys and shoved them in the closet.

If the Tab doesn't get an update to Honeycomb from Samsung, I will be a former customer, I'll donate this to my mom, and I'll switch to the HTC Flyer. They've been brilliant with their updates, and their UI updates for Android.

Same for me, if the Tab doesn't get an update to Honeycomb from Samsung, I will not buy any other Samsun device ever. The minimum I expect from them is to give support to an only 5 months old Tablet. When I said support I am meaning updates.

Unless Samsung intends to phase out production of the 7 inch galaxy tab I don't see how they can not support a Honeycomb release. By all reports that I have seen the Galaxy Tab is selling very well indeed and that would mean that Samsung would continue with production for quite some time. If they choose to produce the 7 inch tab with gingerbread only and the tab 2 with honeycomb it would indicate that the 7 inch tab is doomed as far as Samsung is concerned. They would gradually phase out production of the 7 inch tablet altogether.
One other possibility that Samsung might try is to produce a dual core 7 inch version of the tab with Honeycomb installed. That would give them an excuse not to support the current galaxy tab by encouraging current owners to move up to the dual core technology.
As far as Samsung committing to 10 inch tablets is concerned...only the market will determine what size(s) will be produced. If consumers prefer a smaller tablet the manufacturer's will continue to produce tablets in the size that the market wants. To do otherwise would mean giving up market share and I don't think any of them are willing to lose market share in a market that is growing very quickly.
Either way Honeycomb will wind up on our Galaxy Tabs. The developers here at XDA are brilliant and I'm sure they will combine their skills to port Honeycomb to the current Galaxy Tab.

The short answer.…yes it will, but not from Samsung and not anytime soon.

I think the state of smartphones is tough for the manufacturer and consumer right now because the evolution of technology for smartphones are out of control right now. Someone needs to step up and say "hey, we need to tone it down a notch. We need to allow the consumer to catch up and actually enjoy the investment they just made". Yes, it is an investment for the consumer because they are actually committing to 2 year contracts or paying a lot of money for full price phones. So, manufacturers need to roll things out slowly as far as new hardware goes and enjoy the profits till they start to see it dropping then roll out the next great thing. On the OS side of it? I think Google needs to step up and say "hey, we need to get all the devices that can handle the most latest and greatest version of android updated and caught up." Then, from there roll out new versions at a solid steady pace. Take some control if they really want the android OS to rule the smartphone/tablet market. Of course this is just my opinion.

Considering a tablet, want suggestions!

Hey guys, so tomorrow is my birthday and my grandparents said they'd be willing to buy me a tablet. Thing is, I don't know which tablet I want. I'm highly considering the Galaxy Tab 10.1 since I love Touchwiz UX, and looking at the reviews makes me even more confident. However, I'm not sure if I should wait a big longer for tablets to get quad-core, and if that would affect gaming for me in the near future. (Like for example, newer 3D games would be hard to run since I don't have quad-core).
Any ideas?

I still think the ASUS Transformer is tops with the dock. AND they have UX ported.
However the Galaxy Tab(s) are going to get good development. But hell so does the Transformer.
I would say wait for Kal-El. But they keep pushing it back.

Well, I'm actually not planning on rooting it only because its a gift and I have my phone to mess around with so I don't really care for that. I know what you mean though about kal-el. I want to wait for it, but its not certain when it will come out or anything and its hard to keep up with the latest and greatest. Thanks though, I'm curious to hear others suggestions

I would wait to see ICS and how quickly it is adopted on the current gen tablets. If Samsung is as bad as updating the Tabs as they were the original US Galaxy line.. Ugh. Plus, yeah, there is Kal-el a you mentioned already.

I highly recommend ipad. As of right now none other tablet works like ipad. I bought touchpad during fire sale but I sold it recently because it didn't do better than my phone or laptop.
This means that my touchpad wasn't worth while to bring to work, as it lacked note taking ability nor presenting ability. I bet if u buy galaxy for 500$, you will spend most of time trying to tinker it to do what you intended to but ultimately gets frustrated and sell it.
Also most of the productivity apps are fine tuned for ipad.
However if you are going to use tablet for media consumption, get kindle fire. It has vast library of amazon goodness. But it lacks mic and ffc which makes skype unusable.

If you don't plan on rooting I'd say the Galaxy Tab 10.1, I've messed around with it and it feels a lot more natural to use and the screen is absolutely gorgeous. But that's me, I want to have the tablet experience and after comparing and contrasting the Galaxy Tab is something I'm looking at. I was trying to get a TouchPad before people panicked but I got screwed haha.

Well, the galaxy tab was good at updating to 3.2 pretty quickly. And since it's their only big tablet (other than the different sizes), it's going to get updated more frequently than the epic most likely (especially since I'm getting the wifi version, so no worries about getting the OTA from Sprint). As much as I want to wait for kal-el, I think I'm just gonna go with the galaxy tab 10.1. Kal-el is keep getting pushed back, and for all I know it won't come out for another 4-5 months. Sure I may miss out on some games, but technology moves fast these days. I guess you gotta find a point and stick with it for a while.

I know what you mean. I've definitely considered the iPad. It's great for gaming, productivity, almost everything. Jailbreaking is harmless and I never have to worry about battery life. But the beauty of Android that I love that it's constantly growing. Not just in rom development, but in the marketplace and system as a whole. I feel like everyday I can wake up and see a new app for Android or a new leak of the latest build. Besides, I love the customizability and Touchwiz UX. And I think I'll be satisfied with it. I have my phone for hacking and everything, so I don't think I'll get too many urges to go and break my tablet.

Dang!! But eh, not worth it.
Since it's wifi-only, I'm gonna have music only streamed so no space there. Other than that, it's just apps and movies and movies I can delete if necessary.

Go iPad. You wont regret it. Especially if you already use iTunes.

Nah, I think I've made up my mind. I mean, I know what you're saying. If I were to get an iPad, there would be nothing wrong with it and I'd have no complaints. But on that same note, I would also end out regretting not buying the galaxy tab 10.1 since I didn't give it a chance. I mean, idk. I want a galaxy tab 10.1, but others say iPad. What's bad about the tab 10.1?

I've heard nothing but good things from both really.

Let me put it to you like this - You didnt like the CM7 rom even tho you couldnt wait to get it, so just go with what you know and save yourself the headache.

Considering this or the iPad for my sister

Hello Note 10.1 users.
As stated, this is for my younger sister who just got out of college.
She's considering a tablet and I have a Note II which I love. I've always been an android user, since the nexus one (which she uses since i got the galaxy nexus).
When I'm reading online, even android websites say that android tablets are not on par w/ the iPad. I see that it's about the apps, but I feel like all the big apps are on android too, so I'm just confused.
Has anyone here had significant experience w/ one of the "new" ipads (3rd or 4th) that can offer their thoughts?
The reason I'm considering the Note 10.1 is because the only other 10 inch android tablet that seems good is the transformer infinity and their forums are just RIDDLED with problems, which I don't see Note 10.1 users having. So it seems to be the most stable 10 inch tablet on android.

There's two ipads in my home. My step sons and my wife's. My wife just got the 10.1 after seeing mine and gave her other son the ipad. Just go to a store a try all your options and see what you like best.

Depends on what she wants, does she want high resolution screen/media consumption device or a device more geared toward productivity?

You need to consider what your Sister wants to do with it.
What does she do for a living, what brand of phone does she have, will she be a casual user or a power user.
Would she be happy with a plain Jane iPad as far as customizing goes?
Will she enjoy the artistic aspect of the Note 10.1's S-Pen.
As far as apps go... both android and ios have a wide range of quality apps. that would satisfy user of any age or profession
I have used iPod, iPad, Blackberry Playbook, Kindle fire, and a Note 10.1
My favorite device is the Note 10.1 here are some of the reasons why
The S-Pen, muti-window & dual view, air view, easy clip, smart stay, buddy photo share, live video w/ chapter preview, smart remote, formula match and pop up play.

Once you get used to that you never wanna have something other. I tell you, two aspects of the note are essential: as mentioned the multiwindow feature and the spen (including all the hardware). I use my note for studying and all i have to carry to university is this tablet. I do ALL my work on it with lecture notes but thats another long story... you can find a lot here in this forum.
Back to the multiwindow thing. I promise you, once tried you ll get addicted to it. The feeling is "pretty close" to working on a desktop/laptop machine. I owned the p7500 before i moved on to the note and that was a whole new experience. But to be honest you have to be rooted to REALLY use multiwindow in nearly every app. out of the box it just supports a couple of stock apps and that really sucked.

The Note is the best tablet on the market with one glaring deficiency: it's 147PPI display. Nothing competes with S Pen, S Note, multiview, airview, and all the additional features Samsung packs in to it. For someone that values those features (I do) the 147PPI display is the price you have to pay to get them.
For someone who just wants consumption, the two best tablets are the Xperia Z or Samsung P5200 (their version of the Nexus 10). The first was just announced and I'm not sure of when it goes on sale in the U.S. The second was leaked with no detail yet on features (other than the display resolution), price or availability. The N10 has a ton of issues and because it's "pure Google" missing a lot of features in other tablets. If you have a Costco near you buy her a Note there and, if she doesn't like it or something new comes along, you can return it within 90 days no-questions asked.

Well, it looks like I can get a refurbished one for 380 on ebay. I think I'm going to do that. The Xperia Z looks like a VERY premium tablet, so I'm sure it'll carry a premium price too, and she can barely afford the $380. I would've got her the nexus 10 as I love my nexus 7, but after reading through xda, and seeing that it has nothing but random reboot problems...I said f that.

What android website writes such nonsense?
The Nexus 10 is better then the Ipad in EVERYTHING.
The Note 10 is better then the Nexus 10 because it has the s-pen, s-note, a sd-card slot and so on.
You seem not to know that the question "Android or Apple" is a religious, political question (seriously).

Most of us would never buy an Ipad, whatever specs it has, because it is an Apple product.
All apple products have the apple philosophy of being closed, limited.
Apple makes easy products, suited for your grandma.
To do this they have to RESTRICT your freedom to do things with the device. This limits what you can do with the device and limits your control on even your own data, but it limits also your chances to damage your device by doing something wrong.
A elderly person should buy an apple product because it is easy and an elderly person does not need advanced features.
A smart, young person should buy an android because it gives him the freedom to modify/customize everything and lets him do whatever he wants.
It is a political question:
Do you prefer the former "Soviet Union" (Apple) or the USA (Android)?
Soviet union (Apple): Easy life, the state gives you a job, a home but you have no freedom. (Apple Ipad: easy to use, but limited freedom.)
USA (Android): You have the freedom to become a billionaire like bill gates or fail and land homeless in the streets. How good or bad your life is, is in your hands. (Android Note 10.1: You can do whatever your want and can do many things an Ipad can not. But, you can also root your device, do some error and brick it.)
The Ipad does not have a Pen!
Try to use a Note 10.1 with the Pen for a week and then tell us whether you can continue to live with a device without a Pen.

Get her the Ipad, if you get her the note 10.1 and see what its like she won't end up with a new tablet or you'll have to get another one...:laugh:
I use my note 10.1 for everything. It does everything the ipad does and more. You can customise it to how you like it and change the rom if it doesn't suit you or you aren't getting updates. Modding is easy and throw in the s-pen and you have a brilliant tablet. So I say, get your sister the Ipad or you'll end up with a new tablet and she'll be disappointed....:good:

Iran's nuclear ambitions are a political question. As is Palestine vs. Israel and Pyongyang's lunacy du jour. Android vs. iOS is a practical question. Do you want your tablet experience to be easy, consistent and well defined out of the box with content spoon fed to you and in return give up some flexibility? If so, pick iOS. Do you want your tablet experience to allow for a high degree of customization and configuration with more content flexibility and in return you have to have a higher degree of technical knowledge and need to invest more time? Pick Android.
I'm committed to Android personally but consistently recommend iOS to my non-technical friends because for people that just want to do stuff without having to think about it iOS is a better choice. If someone asks me whether they should go with Android or iOS I hand them my phone or tablet and tell them to play with it. If after a few minutes they look totally confused I recommend iOS. If they get in to the menus and apps and start asking decent questions I recommend Android. Just because we personally enjoy and support Android doesn’t mean iOS isn’t a viable solution for quite a few people.
And the N10 is a train wreck. There are a ton of h/w and QC issues along with it using a barren AOSP interface designed for a phone. 4.2 still has tons of issues that haven’t been resolved yet. The number of people unhappy with the N10 is the highest I’ve seen for an Android tablet to date which is saying something because Asus’ tablets are no walk in the park. The N4’s got more than its share of issues including a rather serious thermal throttling problem when under extended load. Just because a Google device is “pure” and/or says “Nexus” on it doesn’t automatically make it good.

If your sister has any intention of using the tablet for just playing "games" or watching stuff online, you're better off getting her an iPad. You won't have to field any questions because she won't have this bias that the device is hard to use.
If your sister is the kind of person who likes to tweak her devices, do digital art, maybe take notes, you can't lose with the Note 10.1.
If I were you, I'd just stick them with the iPad because I hate getting complaints based on people's preconceived notion on how hard Android devices are to use.

"I do not want a device that restricts my freedom and does not respect my privacy", "I do not want to give money to a company that produces devices that restrict freedom and do not respect privacy", "I do not want to buy products from a company that gets rich by exploiting poor Chinese workers" ARE political and ethical choices.
Just like "buying fair trade products", "not buying meat, because you do not want to kill animals", "not buying north-Korean/Iranian/Israeli" are political and ethical choices. Understand?

I wrote almost the same.
But...
The amount of technical knowledge required to use STOCK samsung/android is not much higher then with an Ipad and your CAN invest time to do advanced stuff, but you do not have to. One can live fine also without root, cwm, overclocking, side-loading, ROM-flashing. My 70 year old "non technical" mother lives fine with a stock samsung android phone. She does not need an Iphone.
Stock samsung/android is very similar to iOS. We all know why.... because Android/Samsung copied it from Apple.
Just like Windows is a copy of the Apple Macintosh. So you recommend your "non technical friends" to buy Macintosh (iMac as they call them now) and not a Windows pc?
The comparison iOS/Android is exactly the same as Macintosh/Windows.
I do not underestimate the intelligence of my friends/family.

i have owned Note 10.1 for 5 months since it came to my country. screen is ****! real ****! u know it has the same screen as the first galaxy tab 10.1? YEAH! go for iPad 4! i will get the iPad 5 when it comes out, my first ever iOS device that i would own. i have used iPad 4 of my friend and it is really really great. my only grudge is that there is no file browser and everything has to be transferred through the iTunes. thats it! nothing else! go for iPad 4 it has the best screen and the best app support and the best of all, it has a great battery life and as a bonus a great resale value... hope u got my point

I gotta tell you, I've used Android and iOS for a long time. Still have an iPad 2 in the house and had an original iPad. I truly and honestly don't get why people continue to perpetuate this myth that Android is "hard to use" and "requires technical knowledge" as well as all the other comments about it that imply difficulty. I've actually found it to be the opposite. Android seems to just make sense to me. In iOS everything I try to do is a monumental pain in the ass. It seems even the most basic activities require going to all kinds of different places.
As for your sister, also consider "total cost of ownership" which goes way beyond the cost of the tablet itself. It seems to me that comparable iOS apps are generally more expensive...not to mention that if you get sucked into the iOS world you usually have to buy a tablet app and a phone app separately. Lots of Android apps work perfectly on a tablet and phone and look great so you really don't need 2 of the same app.
I would also suggest, unless she needs a stylus because she likes to draw or whatever, there are much less expensive and equally good options out there for far less money than the Note 10.1 or the iFad.

^^^ this. Replaced my wife's iphone 4 with a note 2. She asked me how to put her music on it. I told her to plug it into her laptop make a music folder on her sd card and drag her music into it. Her mouth dropped and said that's it?! I always had to work her iTunes for her and it annoyed the crap out of me. Glad she took my advice this time when she upgraded.

I haven't ever owned an Apple device, but it's definitely not "easier to use" when I tried my friends' phones. I mean, the way people talk about Android stuff like you have to be a techie to use it.. Sure, you COULD geek out to do a lot of other stuff, but it's completely unnecessary. The only reason I know a little bit about geeking out is because I found the XDA forums for my first Android tablet and I wanted to do more than just browsing.

Take the note 10, about the interface of apple and how it is easy, you could install a launcher that will make it like the ipad or even windows phone

With the Note 10.1 I was able to download a pdf, import it to SNote, fill out the pdf, exported the edited pdf to pdf and email it to the company that wanted me to print it out, write on it then scan it and after all that, email it back to them..
I'm not sure this can be done or not on an iPad for I have never owned an Apple product nor do I even want to own one
This is reason enough for me to say, purchase the Note 10.1

Should I sell my N4 for the Galaxy S4?

Been playing with my Nexus 4 since a few weeks now but the Galaxy S4 is looking very tempting, especially the display. Should I sell my N4 now and save the moolah to purchase the Galaxy S4?
I don't think I would be getting a better value later on. How many of you are planning to sell off the N4 for the samsung galaxy S4?

Won't sell my Nexus 4 until I get my Nexus 5
I had an S3, and I've not totally given up on Samsung after all the fuss over sources for developers etc, not what I like to see. Very happy still with my Nexus 4, nothing to make me consider an 'upgrade' (and I normally always demand the latest and greatest).

As for your first question, it's really entirely down to opinion. If you don't want any of the newer hardware on the GS4 (i.e. 1080p screen, octa-core processor, 13MP camera etc.) then don't bother. I personally don't see it as worth it at all. I would never be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p screens, I can't conceive of any task in the foreseeable future which the S4 Pro won't be able to handle, I don't use my camera too much and I don't need the expandable storage. Your opinion may well differ, and at the end of the day you definitely won't be able to get a definitive answer to this as it's all down to opinion.
As for the second question, there's already a thread in the Q&A about this (in which the vast majority of people answered no).

The only way id sell my n4 is to maybe get a n5. The s4 didnt really impress me an all of its new features seem gimmicky

Just remember your N4 will get the next version of Android and the features that will bring, your S4? Well you may have to wait a while to get version 5 of Android! Sure the S4 may have better specs but software is just as important as hardware!

1. Battery has been great for me, better than sensation and mt4g.
2. Can be done with apps, I tuned mine based off of an oled, love the screen now
3. It does, users are using lte now

personally i think that the SGS4 is a great phone BUT I don't see any reason for us (the moderate users) to take a leap for it and thats why:
the nexus 4 is amazingly fast, battery is just fine and if u need more than that get a portable charger, PURE android and fast updates so u don't get tied to the manufacturer's good will, I don't like the Super AMOLED display to my eyes the colors are too saturated but that doesnt mean they are not good.
i've bought the nexus after having 4 HTC devices and i must say pure android device is an another league, the custom UI is just slowing it down.
and so about the Exynos 5 Octa
this is NOT a real Octa core. this processor packs tow quad cores
4-cortex A7 @1.6ghz for power 'saving'
4-cortex A15 @ 1.2ghz for performance.
i dont believe in this concept but maybe it's just me.....
so i dont see reason to buy the sgs4 while u can enjoy the nexus 4.

4,5 - Well, I don't really understand why people needs more than 16gb in a phone, is your phone a cinema theater or something that has tons of movies to store or what?

I should add that whether you sell your Nexus 4 to buy an S4 is completely up to you. That is an extremely personal decision, and only the OP can decide that. Anything else is just everyone else's personal opinion, and is usually going to go between people who actually use and love the Nexus 4 (or Nexus in general), and those who don't but post here anyway. Being as this is the Nexus 4 board, I would think the question is most likely going to be slanted in one direction.

Consumer Reports Rates Note 8.0 #1

In the August, 2013 issue of Consumer Reports the Galaxy Note 8.0 is rated #1 ahead of the iPad Mini in the "7 TO 8-INCH SCREEN TABLETS, WI-FI ONLY" category.

As it should be. Anyone who puts the iPad Mini first is either being paid by Apple, or delusional.

This issue of the magazine was the final reason for me buying this device to replace my iPad Mini.

Awesome to hear. I switched from the Nexus 7. I found the 7 inch screen a little to small for me. This is my first Samsung product and I am completely happy with it. I have not even found a reason to root it yet :good:

Clearly, someone who researches the products even a bit before buying would go for the Note 8.0. Also, most customers who take these surveys are included in this bracket.

The fact that a mainstream media outlet like CR has rated this relatively lesser-known product as the "best" in its category is certainly refreshing. But lets not get all fanboy here. Everyone has different preferences, uses their devices differently, and therefore has a different reason for considering one tablet "better" of "best" versus another. I love my Note 8, but I'm not going to belittle others, because they made a different choice.
If a person is heavily invested in the iOS ecosystem (such as purchased apps); or if they are not tech savvy, and don't want to learn their way around a new OS, the iPad Mini might still be a good choice.
Yes, if you base your judgement purely on technical capabilities and specifications, the Note 8 is the clear winner. Or for people that prefer customization, instead of being force-fed most aspects of their device's interface. But not everybody cares about such things.

i agree. i'm not sure if i'll be getting my daughter an android tablet for two reasons:
1. i've already bought her a lot of apps on her ipad and don't want to buy them again on android
2. i don't want to share my contacts, emails, everything personal with her when i set up her android device under my account. at least with ios i can set up email and store accounts separately. i can do it with android, but that'll require me to either make a dummy acct for the play acct or lockdown some of the apps, which won't work if she needed to use any of those applications - unless some of you guys have any idea on sharing an android tablet with family without having to buy apps twice.

Maybe one day in the distant future we might just get the fabled 4.2 update with multiuser support...

I tried the multi user set up on my Asus tf 300 pad with 4.2.1 but it made the tablet too slow. ... hopefully it's not the case with note 8 because of more ram and i/o read and write speeds

You couldn't have had it on your Galaxy Nexus. Android 4.2 only supports multiuser on tablets, not phones. Unless maybe some custom ROM deb decided to shoehorn it into a ROM?

I am also looking to swap my Nexus 7 for the Note 8, I am curious to know how the screen resolution compares? I think the Nexus shows very sharp text, one thing I love about it. After my brief ownership of a Galaxy Note 10.1 (with pretty awful blurry text) I am a bit sceptical. Would love to know your thoughts on this and any possible regrets on switching from N7 to the Note 8

While I havent tried the nexus 7 in great detail so cant compare, I do have a 10 inch tablet thats the same res as the note 10.1 and can say the difference between that and the 8.0 is great.
Best way to decide if its good enough for you is to look at the PPI figures...
Note 10.1 - 149
Note 8.0 - 213
nexus 7 - 216
Ipad Mini - 163
Ipad 2 - 132
Ipad retina - 264
As, you can see, the note 8.0 is much sharper than both the ipad mini and the note 10.1 almost identical to the Nexus 7 but not quite in retina display teritory.

most likely you're right. i thought the gnex was my only 4.2.2 device (other than the s4) but my nook hd+ is running 4.2.2. i'll have to take a look at it an play around with it. i haven't turned it on since i've gotten the gn8.

Very thoughtful comments. My son is extremely smart and tech sac savvy, yet he chose Apple versus Android. We have quite interesting discussions. We never can agree on which one is the best, so I've opted to leave it as it.
As a manager for a large corporation, I do have some experience in marketing, production and design. Apple has great products, but their demise will be their lack of diversity. Samsung has too many products in so many markets and Apple will never be able to catch them. As we can ask see, all tablets (tier 1) are reaching a point of saturation and there will be nothing else to add to them until a new product arises.
So my estimation is that Samsung and Android are here to stay and Apple has but a few years left before they become the next BlackBerry.
But why rub it in their faces? Let's just let then living their dreams. No harm.

Valid points.
First thing I would do is list the apps that you paid for on iOS you would want on Google Play. I've seen that often the Apple App Store charges for apps that are free on Google Play. Once you've determined which apps those were, that would give you some concrete data to make a decision.
Once multi-user profiles are set one can "define" privileges. Or so I've read. I've not needed to do this myself but it appears others have.
