Or you could try using a custom kernel that supports kcal and adjust the color settings to reduce ghosting and screen retention

Doesn't really work for me. I've lowered the rgb values down to 220 and although it's not as bad as higher values it's still visible when anything on the screen stays in one place for a while.
Maybe I'm just sensitive to it or something because I never had a device with an lcd that has this issue.

What percentage is your brightness on usually ?
It varies because I use lux but on average I'd estimate around 50-60%. I know the screen being brighter probably induces it more but it's easier on my eyes when in the little room that I use it in.

That is my theory. Brightness over 50% for extended periods causes this problem.
Indoors I have mine at 25%. No sign of any ghosting a year later and i should say the same with the G4 too.
I got used to lower brightness for battery reasons. My laptop is on zero and even that is just right indoors.
Outdoors is a different story.
1.flash kernel that support KCAL (im using M2000)
2.download Color Control app:
https://android-apk.org/re.codefi.savoca.kcal/
3. give root access if asked
4. set value as image attached.
5. wait for about 10-20mins (screen on)
6. youre good to go
* dont forget to set on boot color control

Anyone notice throttling on the screen in terms of contrast tone and brightness. You cannot turn it off no matter what settings you choose. One good example is when you pull up the keyboard and the brightness is fairly low, there's a huge color shift that pops up till the keyboard tray is gone again. Could a kernel fix this?

i am trying to get some help from international model guys on this; mine DOES NOT change contrast and brightness if i disable every auto feature AND ALL POWER SAVING features. I have seen this on another GS4 and not on my own or my GF's with everything disabled. I wonder if there is a difference in screens or part batches and sensitivity or a different controller chip; another thing im looking into.
also the ambient light sensor; try covering it completely. i think that and the 'auto detect/modify screen contrast/colors' is running no matter what on certain GS4's.

Yeah I've tried it all seems like its at the kernel level. I've had 3 galaxy s4s and they've all done it...

I'm sure someone will make a kernel that fixes these weird quirks that only I seem to notice lol

i have calibrated many monitors before; maybe when the bootloader is unlocked and there is a full ROM dump someone could assist me to find the screen calibration adjustments so i can create a professional AdobeRGB and sRGB profile for the screen as well as rec 709 full and 16-235 video modes etc. I am not the only one interested in this; the Galaxy S III, Note II, and Google Nexus 7 are all excellent candidates for field monitors with excellent gamut. I just want mine to display colors as accurately as is possible for the moment; i keep all my demo reel footage and music videos i shot on it; a proper 'flat' image is important before editing, and my company we shoot raw, yet even a simple 8 bit example of before/after editing in raw environment would help our clients.
This is the first mobile full HD screen capable of such broadcast range of gamut; would be incredible to use as proper field monitor with correct calibrations.

Hey folks so i bit the bullet and gave my dna to the wife (still love that thing) and got a brand new G2.
Something weird is up w the brightness or contrast on this phone though: even w auto brightness off and brightness set to minimum the brightness seems to randomly adjust itself when interacting w the screen. Is this a bug or some kind of feature im not aware of? The DNA had it a bit when scrolling but nowhere near as noticeable as this.
I've noticed this as well and from my understanding this is something that all G2s have.
From what I have found this only happens when the brightness is low (i.e. less than %50) and has something to do with the phone trying to adjust the brightness based on what is being displayed on the screen. I have noticed it the most when using the XDA app when I'm scrolling down through a thread; the display brightness seems to randomly jump up and down just a bit as you scroll down with your finger. If you're not scrolling the brightness won't jump up and down.
Initially I thought it was just something goofy with the auto brightness, but as you pointed out the 'flickering' still occurs even when auto brightness is turned off. Hopefully this is just something that can be fixed with a software update as it is a bit annoying.
I use lux brightness app now and have no problems with this issue,it was an issue before.
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
I've noticed it too. Even with automatic brightness off, CABL turned off, and brightness at 68%, it'll still do it. I've poked around with Xposed, and I have yet to figure out why it does that. I've heard speculation that it's controlled in the kernel, so hopefully a kernel dev can figure out how to disable it.
I noticed this as well but its completely gone on on these new AOSP ROMs. If you are looking for a solution this is the best IMO.

Try Lux or Velis Auto Brightness ftw. Way better than how the system handles auto brightness.

Hmm i just noticed theres a "content adaptive backlight" app running..wonder if thats the culprit.
This thread seems to debunk that theory as disabling content adaptive backlight seems not to do anything.
yes it's cabl. many posts of mine were about this. we've come to the conclusion it may be activated on the kernel level bc changing anything in the app or build prop does nothing. it's gotta be kernel related. but yes it's content adaptive back light. it sucks.

I guess I should have done my research about OLED screens, but I feel that this screen is way too dim both indoors and outdoors. Is anyone else having problems with this? I know that the peak brightness is 475 on autobrightness, but I feel that the screen never reaches that. On another note, the colors seem very saturated and unreal even on movie mode...
Is there any way I can set the autobrightness to kick in at a higher lux indoors? I know it seems like I am venting, but I really like this phone but the display brightness may make me abandon for the Nexus 5...
Thank you everyone!

Root the phone and install a custom ROM. That will give you the ability to change the auto brightness levels easily.
You could also turn off auto brightness and set it manually so you fan boost it all the way up whenever you wanted.
As far as the hardware capabilities the screen is capable of being plenty bright. I could see mine if I was standing on the face of the sun.

I don't know much about custom TW ROMs as I run aosp exclusively. I know its easy in cm ROMs. If its not a native feature of Omega I'm sure there is a mod you can tweak it with. You would have to search though. I don't know where to direct you.

Hello,
I read that the S5 screen can go pretty bright, but only in certain situations and it's not controllable by the user.
Is there a hack that can allow me to set the screen brightness to be at its true max?
Thanks

the only way you can set a screen to max is by using auto-brightness. The note 3 had that max brightness but only using stock auto-brightness. I dont think there is way to mod that as the screen has a protection in order to prevent overheating
isn't it already bright enough at 600+nits?
its the brightest phone that exists

It is only that bright in direct sunlight. Normal max brightness is 351 nits. I believe it's 698 nits in direct sunlight. I believe OP is asking if there is a way to make it stay closer to the 698, via software hack.
To answer your question, even if it is the brightest phone out there, it still sucks in sunlight. In my honest opinion.

Search on Youtube "Hacking max brightness into AOSP for Samsung Galaxy Note 3"
and download the apps to hack your maximum brightness I dont know for sure if its working on S5 but on my S4 GT-I9506 (snapdragon800) makes a huge difference The GT-I9506 has a bit brighter screen in addition to the classic S4 around 5-10% and the classic S4 GT-I9505 can hit 475nits with autobrightness in direct sunlight so maybe my phone hits more than 500nits but I dont care about nits because the phone is really very bright!

It really sucks. I literally have to hold it out and watch the screen slowly dim. Smh
Turrible..
Wow too bright? I always think its way too dark.
If it's too bright under certain lighting, adjust the slider until it's comfortable. Android will then remember that setting. This was introduced in Marshmallow.
And yes, I'm talking about adjusting the slider while auto brightness is active.

Weird. I've actually been impressed with the auto brightness feature on my V20. Esp after how horrible it was on my G4. I gave up on using it on my G4 in about 2 days it was so awful.
Its good for me
I've given up on the auto brightness.. lux works fine on my v20. I can set specific screen brightness on any external light level

Would you mind telling us how to adjust the brightness slider on auto? All I KL now is you can tap the % for a preset 0, 50 and 90.
Auto brightness has a mind of its own on my phone.
I'll set to like 20% and it'll immediately go back up to 60% or whatever.
I'll slide it back down and it'll go right back up by itself and never go back down.
Lux is the key.

Its pretty much as it sounds. With auto brightness on, if it's too bright or too dark, just adjust the slider in the notification bar until its to your liking. From then on, whenever Android experiences that same level of light, it'll use your settings instead of the default, and fills in the blanks using a calculated curve.
I honestly don't see any point in using Lux because adjust the stock brightness works just as good, if not better. Yeah, it does mean that there will be a bit of time before Android learns all the typical lighting levels, but it'll get there as you use the phone throughout your typical day.

Are you using T-Mo version too?
I wonder if T-Mobile took this out for some reason. I haven't a clue as to why though!
What's starting to annoy me about the V20 is that every carrier has stupid tweaks to the software. One carrier is missing Android's native auto brightness (T-Mo maybe), while another carrier is missing the SmartWorld functionality (my ATT version), etc. [emoji35]

Im on Verizon.
Did Verizon also remove this feature?
If you change the level with auto brightness on, it's supposed to work unless the carrier tampered with the programming. This is supposed to be a stock Android feature that even Samsung kept on their devices. -_-
