[Q] Way TOOO dim - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I guess I should have done my research about OLED screens, but I feel that this screen is way too dim both indoors and outdoors. Is anyone else having problems with this? I know that the peak brightness is 475 on autobrightness, but I feel that the screen never reaches that. On another note, the colors seem very saturated and unreal even on movie mode...
Is there any way I can set the autobrightness to kick in at a higher lux indoors? I know it seems like I am venting, but I really like this phone but the display brightness may make me abandon for the Nexus 5...
Thank you everyone!

Root the phone and install a custom ROM. That will give you the ability to change the auto brightness levels easily.
You could also turn off auto brightness and set it manually so you fan boost it all the way up whenever you wanted.
As far as the hardware capabilities the screen is capable of being plenty bright. I could see mine if I was standing on the face of the sun.

I don't know much about custom TW ROMs as I run aosp exclusively. I know its easy in cm ROMs. If its not a native feature of Omega I'm sure there is a mod you can tweak it with. You would have to search though. I don't know where to direct you.

[Q] Dark screen app (?) to reduce brightness? Is it possible?

Hello
I have a Samsung I9000 Galaxy S which is way too bright even at the lowest setting.
Anyways so I got an idea of an app but I dont know whether its technically possible or not!
So is it possible to create an App that works just like a transparent dark glass which covers your screen and you see through it and can perform all functions normally but due to the app the screen becomes dark so that it doesn't strain the eyes?
Also current "minimum" brightness on the Galaxy S is "10" even with 3rd party apps. Is it a limitation of Android or Samsung firmware? Also is it technically possible to go into - values such as "-30" ?
Ah, great topic. I have the same problem on my HTC Desire. Interesting to hear what the experts have to say.
Yeah these amoled screens are uber bright!

I have read on the net that it doesnt work for Galaxy S.
The app is called screen filter. Don't really know too much about it other than it works fantastically well and its free. Reduces brightness to almost nothing if you want, and the app functions as a widget for toggling as well.
I've been going around posting this in as many places as i can because this freaking app really helped me out, I could hardly look at the screen in the dark at all but now its good to go. Hopefully help some new galaxy purchasers out.
You can't go into minus values but you can set it to 0, which is 1 above the screen actually being off.
You need to be rooted, then you can just adjust the value with adb.

Kernel makers, please add the ability to adjust auto brightness.

Please add the option of modifying auto-brightness levels, like CM 6.1. I suppose that it would require a kernel modification + an app to do this through gui.
Thanks.
What can CM do? I've been thinking it would be nice to be able to modify the min and max, and maybe the curve.

It allows one to arbitrarily edit a table of sensor output vs brightness/button brightness.
It's really nifty.
CM6.1 reports these sensor values:
10, 160, 225, 320, 640, 1280, 2600, 10240
10-160 is in dimly lit indoors, 320-640-1280, in moderately to brightly lit indoors, and the rest is outside.
So I set those to brightness something like 50,60,70,80, 110, 140, 180, 255. A it was perfect to my eye. Not too bright, not too dim.
Didn't ever have to mess with brightness after that.
I'd really like to hear from developers like Netarchy and King, as well as from regular users - if they would like that option.
I would love to see this.
I always feel the auto-sensor tends to be too bright, and never adjusts the screen low enough inside.

That's exactly what I think. Plus, the brightness is not at maximum in direct sunlight (although that might be a safety feature).
Mine always send to bright, or it won't get bright when I go into a bright area until I sleep and wake it. :|

+1 on this. So motivated that I searched for this thread....
Any news?

The stock auto-brightness is way too bright in completely darkness. This is one of the things I had on my list nearly since the beginning. Nobody else seemed to care.

An article showing how useless auto-brightness is:
http://gizmodo.com/5673444/why-exis...d-brightness-controls-are-effectively-useless
Do people not notice this or do they just not care?
Pretty sure people have given up on this. It's taken me three days of Google searching to find this thread so people probably don't know where to turn.
The lack of adjustments to the auto brightness values is extremely annoying. Even my old Windows mobile 6 phones had this ability.

There was an application for WM I used to use on my Mogul, cant remember what it was called but it allowed you to calibrate the auto brightness levels. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or if there's an Android version?
This can be done with Tasker in the Market. Its a powerful app and there was a thread a while back about this exact thing. I don't remember what it was called, but I posted in it, so you could browse my posts from a month or so ago.
Hey... This thing makes phone calls too!

Annoying brightness issue

Has anyone noticed the brightness changing when accessing the camera application.
It annoys the hell out of me, I've tried loads of custom roms in the hope one would not have this issue.
Is there anyway to solve it.
In general use I don't use auto brightness and set the brightness on low, and it's annoying when going into the camera and the brightness shoots up and makes everything slightly washed out.
The only rom that doesn't do this is the miui rom but I want something more stable for everyday use.

No.
The transition looks really bad when going into the camera app and then going back to home screen or app drawer.
At first I thought it was a bug in a custom rom, but it even does it on the stock rom.
I fear for you this is how Samsung wanted it to be: Starting the cam app sets the screen brightness to max! After closing the app it reverts to initial...
Was the same on all my HTC devices!
Samsung counts this as a feature, not a bug...
Maybe potatoman can "fix" this,
although I think it's ok for most of us!
Either way, this means that you would have to replace your camera.apk with a modified one, and someone has to modify it for you!
Hope this helps, our at least clarify this issue!

Thanks for the info.
I'm new to android and samsung phones really.
I was hoping it was a setting that could be disabled.
Not sure why samsung felt the need to crank the brightness when in camera mode.
I've run into the brightness chaning in other apps too.
I know that on the stock browser you can adjust brightness.
But what I want is just ONE brightness setting for the whole phone, is this too much to ask for?!
I am using stock KF3 uk unbranded firmware, and my brightness does not change when I enter the camera app. I do not believe I have altered any settings.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Screen dimming.

I got my Galaxy S4 yesterday and noticed even after i turned auto brightness off, Set my screen to dynamic, the screen still changes brightness levels when entering the Chrome web browser (gets dimmer), playing some video games (screen get brighter) and other various tasks.
I am not a noob, I've gone through the phones settings for each app and cannot find a fix, do you guys notice your phones doing the same thing?? I might be a slight change in brightness level but non the less i like my screen extremely bright this is just my preference.
Any thoughts, ideas, tweaks or feedback on how to resolve this issue??

The only time I've seen this happen since I've gotten the device is when the battery dropped below 5%, and it automatically adjusted the brightness to seemingly the lowest it could go, and stuck until I charged it to full again.
I blame it on Samsung's stockware.
maybe this is why i couldnt get the phone to look as bright as my note 2. i was using the browser and cnn.com to compare.. my note 2 screen was brighter with both phones brightness on max.

Just throwing this out there...the screen does dim about 10 seconds before the screen times out and turns off...even if you have automatic brightness disabled.
Let's say you have a 1 minute timeout:
Screen on
50 seconds later screen dims
10 seconds later screen turns off
Just putting that out there in case - it is confusing to some.
Dude I'm having the same problem, yeah it's a small dim but it's freaking annoying cuz I have mine at full brightness all the time. I have the tmobile galaxy s4. I tried changing the screen mode and it still happens

I've noticed it too. Just seems like typical dynamic contrast behavior. Though I don't understand why on earth you'd need it on a screen with perfect blacks.

I'm sure it has to do with preventing burn in. You probably already know this, but in the right conditions, the Auto brightness setting can get over 30% brighter than manually maxing the slider. Hopefully, it's something that can be unlocked at some point.

I don;t know if this helps or not....i notice the same thing earlier.....what i did was go to Settings--> Display, uncheck Auto Adjust ScreenTone
at least that is what worked for me
Maybe the power saving mode is manipulating it?

Its the power saving option. Its the same in s3. Go to powrr saving settjngs and uncheck the auto dim or auto brightness or something like that. It happens when power saving is on. I cant remember the exact optin coz im using custom rom on my s3.

This happened in the S4s I used in the store as well. Manual brightness, and auto screen adjust disabled, power save off. Opening certain apps like chrome and the stock browser causes the screen to dim a bit. Nothing I found prevented this behavior. It's annoying since I already find the screen to be a bit dim.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Notice this as well, super annoying. I've disabled power saving, auto screen adjust, etc. and even non-dynamic modes do it.
Hopefully this gets fixed by kernel mods in the future
Same problem, even with brightness max with auto off, decent charge, and off power saver. Very annoying
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Its built into the Snapdragon, its called BRITE and seems works independantly of the auto screen tuning that the S4 has. The HTC One has it and its much more intrusive. I wrote a long winded post about it in the HTC One forums. You have to wait for devs to come out with kernels to disable it, much like they did for the Tegra 3
The HTC screen is bright enough that it doesn't matter. Samsung phones need to be at max brightness to be any good.

Just an FYI, if you put the screen on auto brightness, it reaches a higher maximum brightness outdoors as apposed to the slider. Samsung did this to keep the screen from overheating when set to max all the time.
I want full brightness indoors too.

I see. If you have the slider on max all the time, i think the screen will just dim eventually because of heat. Might want to stay away from the S4 then cus you might have screen problems down the line :/
If you havent go to settings display screen mode and use something other than adapt display. No more adjusting.

Screen flickering in direct sunlight?

Hello,
I picked up my GS4 about a week ago but haven't really used it in direct sunlight until today. I was outside, and the sun was shining brightly on the screen. Home screen was fine, and darker images were ok, but if I were to go to an app with a primarily white background, or open up something which used the keyboard (texting) the screen would flicker pretty noticeably. Brightness is all the way up, and auto tone was off.
Has anyone else seen this?
yup this is normal esp when using the keyboard.
Im not sure if it will be fixed.

I guess my question is, is this a hardware issue with many GS4's or a minority. I came across a thread on the Tmobile GS4 forum where people were experiencing it, but it seems not everyone is.

Its a hardware thing, but also its only in touchwiz so a developer might be able to turn it off so to speak.
It adjusts the color and tone no matter what to save the display from overheating and or burning in...
Does it a lot and I notice it cause im weird about those kinds of things.
If you use CM 10.1 or AOKP its gone.
ive made some progress with the RGB light meter on this; hoping a friend can write up some code so we can test out a 'smoothed out' transition and sampling rate and one that is sped up, averaged faster, but will take up more CPU and RAM and battery but more accurate.
here is another thread regarding it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280715
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284726
Maybe if someone who is using CM10 or AOKP could test it to see if it is a software issues and not a hardware issue?
edit: slade and jet replied while I was writing this...thanks for the info. looks like it is touchwiz related.
edit2: just went out in the sun again to test a lot of different options in the display settings (which none worked) but is seems it is only happening when the keyboard is enabled. I am using swiftkey.
yeah TW and that sensor communicate; i believe the sensor itself probably works better ALONE, but TW changes it and throttles it for either battery or screen safety.
It is always dependent on what is being pulled up on the screen, though it can be mitigated quite a bit if you disable all power saving and screen auto features, and leave brightness under 80% or so.
yea anything under 80% in direct sun is basically black. all power saving and screen auto modes were disabled. i covered up all of the sensors too and it still flickered....

Not just a sensor thing per-say.
It's hard to explain, they most likely did it because they didn't want the amoled to burn in.
Its the same reason why the brightness goes up another 34% or so on auto above the max brightness. Only uses it when needed to save the screen and battery.
Does it on youtube too btw, bring up a video on wide screen then tap it and you'll see the drastic color shift
I noticed this thing when I got my phone also. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess it's an actual problem
