First, I would like thank everyone who has contributed to the development of this phone and the continued support. I recently rooted my phone, changed to the international version, twrp recovery and added some mods like viper and YouTube. I wanted other root users feedback on kernels they have used and which have given them the best battery usage. The phone is much faster and snappier since the root but I have noticed more battery loss. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Smurf kernel is best for me at helping battery life without loss to performance. Using battery saving profile
Thank you for feedback.. Any other users have opinions on other kernels?

Smurf for the win!...
Definitely the best ... don't bother to try other kernel
Just use Smurf and forget about any other kernel.
The only one I've tried for this phone so far is HolyDragon. I'd heard amazing things about the ROM and Kernel in the past so i figured i'd start with that. It's been a full week now and i can say without a doubt I've had a marked improvement in battery life with no performance changes. I also left it with it's default installed settings, but there are plenty to tweak.
I'll have to look into Smurf since it's getting some high praise here.
Void4ever
I think RenderZenith is worth a try. The dev seems to put a lot of research and testing into it. Battery seems slightly better than stock and there doesn't feel like any sacrifice in performance.
I appreciate the responses and I have tried elemental and from the recommendation have switched to smurf kernel but I am getting a flickering on my lockcreen when I get a notification.. Any feedback?

I too get it on Smurf but he says it's a stock thing. Never seen it when I use any other kernel but his. Who knows, that flicker doesn't really bug me though.
Ooh I been getting that static effect since I moved to Smurf (yesterday) - you guys talking about the static like effect on the lockscreen right? I was on Elemental for a month, didn't experience it at all.
Alongside Smurf I added the animated wallpaper and the white theme yesterday, so made me think it could be the animated wallpaper or the white theme. I since moved to the black theme again for a few hours, the static screen hasn't showed up again. Tried unlocking rigorously mayve 50 to 8o times.
Can people experiencing this on lockscreen confirm they are all on White/colorful theme?
Render zenith hands down. I've tried them all.
He knows what he's doing and I've been running it on my 3T as well.
Holydragon is running amazing

I just started trying out Smurf kernel with the balanced profile. I started getting the static effect which I never saw before. I've previously used elementalx and renderzenith. I'm on a dark theme so I don't think the white theme plays a role in the static.
The static really doesn't bother me much, but I think I got longer battery life with renderzenith. I'll give Smurf a few more days and then I'll try Smurf with the battery profile.
Totally agree

I appreciate everyone's feedback and suggestions.. I have been running smurf for a few days now and it is a good kernel but I'm not sure I'm feeling it a 100%. So today I'm trying out elemental kernel and see how it feels..

Tresk's red flare is a monster, good balance of performance and killer battery. Next I would say a tie for second with radioactive and nebula. Smurf is next for me. Haven't run holy dragon or render zenith. Arter kernel was snappy and responsive but completely broke my phone's encryption bc or the f2fs install process.

JT has a really nice version of ICS. Right now it's my daily driver.
~This is going to take crackerjack timing, Wang.~
I finally flashed his 4th build although I had been planning to wait until it was sbrissenized (meaning ICS with TSM Parts for anyone who doesn't already know what I mean by "sbrissenized"). So far I'm liking it... It'll be even better with a couple of Maraschino cherries
Has anyone seen John Connor?
JT's ics is pretty sweet. It's my daily driver. Battery life is by far the best I've seen, period. It has it's quirks, but nothing unmanageable.

battery isn't that great, but it did run Pandora for my work place for 5 hours yesterday (screen off of course) and that only took a 20% hit. Not near as bad as I expected. My Gmail keeps stopping though and I kinda need that. That's literally the only problem I've had. And randomly during a call my screen won't come back on till reboot, but might be my undervolting. I'm gonna reflash and see if that works before I go try that new CM7 KANG build. Hope this thread stays decent...

Sorry it took me a while to notice the pun thar But, yes, ICS (and ice cream in general) is pretty sweet
Only problem is my phone is getting some lag with the latest build... Perhaps because ICS was designed for newer hardware than what the Fascinate has (especially in terms of RAM)...
Has anyone seen John Connor?
Where is the new build.

Well...the launcher is SLOW. Once I replaced it with ADW and a qtpie ICS theme it's much, much better. One trick I've found is enabling 2d hardware acceleration, and then downloading spare parts and disabling compatibility mode so apps don't get all screwed up.
This smooths things up quite a bit, along with a slight overclock. Everything is smooth as butter, and I'm not exaggerating here! I do however suffer from random reboots, this could be caused by my overclock though. I also limited background processes to 4 to see if that would help anything, I'm still testing it.
As for the extremely loud in call volume, Chopper's tasker setup is working perfectly so that's not an issue. And then no voice recognition software or tethering works, no tethering actually sucks because I own a WiFi only tablet.
Also I've noticed when I receive a call, the person on the other end hears static if my screen is on. And for some final touches I bulletproofed my launcher with a part of the supercharger script.
No MMS...could care less about that.
Battery life is mediocre, I'm still calibrating it though.
Sorry I kinda jumped all over the place.
Those are my thoughts on Ice Cream Sammiches.

Stock LG lollipop does look nice. Looking at videos (which I know aren't final releases), I noticed a lack of the lollipop app open/close animation, which I was a bit upset about.
Waiting for CM to get to a more stable point to flash, then hoping CM gets their lollipop on soon

I agree. I had an n5. Having good Roms and **** getting updated daily isn't as good as it seems to be, 1 your battery never optimizes, 2 there's always bugs and reboots and kernel crashes that seem to get fixed after a while but more problems occur.
After g3 tweaksbox, gravity box (just for pie controls), aosp theme for icons and pulldown it feels like a nexus. But you cant beat having an sd card removable battery, this camera quality and this speaker. Yea i had to use a kernel with faux gamma and sound (skydragon) and greenify to get nexus smooth but i dont really mind that
I tried going back to stock android but I just find the g3 is better

Hello droidsmiths,
S7 Edge is my first ever smartphone (yep, late to the party). I was looking forward to trying new ROMs and kernels, to get more customisation and have proper (admin) control of my device.
First I tried RR, whose customisations are excellent, but averaged ≈3 hours "normal"-use battery life (stock @ ≈8 hours). AOD/USB stopped working, and the phone was always warm to the touch, even in standby. Is that normal?
I then tried Helios, then SuperMan (and their respective kernels) but I can't find anything different. The included apps/fonts are handy though. All Settings customisations/options seem identical to stock except a new icon here and there, is that correct?
I would like to customise appearance / UI settings (e.g. no animation, white-on-black as default) and have CPU/GPU/RAM/network control. Ideally, battery life at maybe >75% of stock. My expectations might be too high, sorry about that, I am new to all this. I'm a Windows developer, so not too bad with those OSes but totally lost in Android. (Can't even find a way to set the wallpaper to be just black, yikes!)
Is there a TW-based ROM that allows in-depth customisation like RR, or a non-TW ROM with working AOD and fingerprint scanner?
Thanks for any advice/help you can provide, and to the developers for their work.

Welcome to the world of android!
Big advocater for touchwiz ROMs here. Never understood AOSP based ROMs like RR on Samsung phone - nothing improved really (worse battery life, camera, lost features, mild if any performance gain) + I reckon you bought the wrong phone for yourself if you use AOSP ROM on a samsung. Just my opinion though.
Theming - Superman has quite a few things you can change in the superman settings app. most notably for me notification appearance and blur effect on notification pulldown. If you simply want to change appearance, you can use samsung themes. There are plenty of black and white themes there. If it's still not enough, you can use Nova Launcher?
Kernel control - use superkernel with the ROM if you like to tweak. synapse is buggy but will let you tweak heaps. Kernel adiutor has less tweaking ,but more stable.
Performance, battery life - I'm on superman ROM with Superstock Kernel, better battery life than stock for sure. 2% drain overnight (6-8 hrs), ~12-20% drain in 24hr on an average day for me, pretty much default superstock kernel settings (changed IO scheduler and TCP algorithm). Greenify / forcedoze helps with battery too. Performance is pretty much the same as stock in my experience.
Havent tried helios, but I believe it comes with Xposed which offers heaps of customisation. Kernel is pretty much stock here I believe, but you can flash a kernel over it. For tweaking use Superkernel, Notorious or TGP kernel. You can still theme store here too.
I hope this helps. Any questions, let us know

I'm coming to the same conclusion (wrong phone), unfortunately. Wish I knew beforehand about Samsung locking things down so hard before I purchased; was never mentioned in reviews though. It's only been a couple of days and I still have accessories being shipped, so won't sell it just yet. In the meantime I'll see if I can tailor it to be workable.
TBH any ROM is fine, so long as I can do two main things: default to black background/white text (e.g. my Win 10 laptop), and CPU/GPU control. White-on-black is more important, I have a mild optical disorder. The colour-inversion accessibility option is excellent, but as it applies to e.g. photos (unlike Windows' high-contrast accessibility themes) it's overkill... and because it's global, some things are actually harder to discern.

I jumped the gun installling non-TW ROMs, so haven't tried any of Samsung's themes yet... I'll check them out tonight. With LineageOS, I purchased the Sungtratum Substratum addon and Swift Black theme, which worked very well, but as you say the performance issues and missing features seem to defeat the purpose of owning decent hardware. [EDIT: I'm sorry, that's very rude! I don't mean it so bluntly: I probably won't use e.g. the camera much so can understand that many features are not a priority for users, including myself. Now that I've had a better look around (and still only seen maybe 5% of what's on offer) in the ROMs, all have excelled in different areas and the work that goes into them is incredible, especially for FREE!]

Ah, I noticed Adiutor included in a couple of ROMs and see that it does all I need—just basic tweaking in discrete profiles like ThrottleStop/Afterburner for Windows, triggered with events via AutoHotkey (Tasker looks like a the best equivalent).

(Just bolded points that I saw for easy reference) Samsung doesnt lock things down that bad, most stock ROMs regardless of manufacturer are a little inflexible for various reasons, think of it like an iphone treatment. The custom ones are very flexible IMO.
As for accessories, I know you didnt ask, but screen protectors are hard to come by due to the curved screen - glass ones have poor fit and never have sticky surface the whole way = dust can come underneath + poor sensitivity, film ones tend to lift up on the edges . and once you do find a reasonable one, normally cases cause the screen protector to lift. I highly recommend a film screen protector and a case that is friendly on one. I personally use an unbranded film protector from a street shop haha BUT I would highly recommend the supcase unicorn beetle case as it has a part that comes from the front (rather than most cases that only come from behind) meaning that it keeps the protector on very well, even an unbranded one such as mine.

Both boxes are quite easily ticked. Theme store sounds like the solution for you - like i said earlier, plenty of black and white themes. Superman ROM also lets you change the colours for notifications as theme store wont change that. Attached some screenshots of my phone's UI just to show you that it can be done with touchwiz.

I recommend renovate ice with the notorious kernel, it has always been smooth and battery life is great.
I HIGHLY recommend the Note 8 port "IronMan-Rom 7.1.1".

The performance, for me, is noticeably faster and the battery life is great! Yesterday on it's first cycle I achieved over 6 hours screen on time and as for today had over 2 hours screen time (general web browsing, bit of Youtube, downloading apps from Play Store etc) and still got 70% left.

Thanks mate, I'll give it a try, just downloaded.
I'm coming from Oreo beta - I don't recommend it. Magisk doesn't work, kernel is not battery friendly, % is dropping from 100 to 80 in no time..... also lags here and there, not everything is working as it should. Yeah beta definitely, there's room for improvement.

Nice - thanks for the heads-up!
I was tempted by the Beta, but then I knew I'd miss the little features that I'm used to (like long press back button to kill etc.0) not to mention the stability factor. But I was itching for a change in rom. I was on Batman rom for a while and then I saw the Ironman rom Note 8 port and I haven't looked back! Everything, for me, works flawlessly - got Substratum theme, using the kernel that is provided and honestly I would say this is the best possible rom available for the S8 (I was even getting tempted to jump ship to the Pixel 2 XL...) but I feel very settled once again
Let me know how you find it!

After few days of testing all I can say is AWESOME. Stable, smooth, battery friendly. And tons of customizations. It reminds me of good times on Lollipop when Xposed was working and I was using Wanam app to change everything...
One thing is driving me crazy though. Substratum! It's not working properly. I have the Sungstratum paid add-on and SwiftDark theme (I have paid for that too!). It shows that all themes applied successfully, but after reboot nothing is changed (sometimes notification bar and settings are themes, but not always). What theme are you using?

When you open substratum and then it's settings, do you see sungstratum listed there (like in my attached picture)?

I just bought Swift Black theme from play store. Uninstalled everything: substratum, add-on and themes. Rebooted. Installed everything again: substratum, add-on and black theme. Granted all permissions for substratum (I'm using Magisk). Applied theme. Restarted UI only and voila it worked for every app including dialer, contacts and gmail. Then rebooted. And dialer, contacts and gmail is all white again...
Ugh. I think I'm gonna liaise with substratum support but I don't think they would help as they already mentioned that on Samsung it CAN work (but that not mean it would).

Hey, I'm not too sure if that's possible given you've got a snapdragon, but I'd certainly ask to find out for sure in their thread here:
https://download.grifodev.ch/file/19-rom-stable-n-7-1-1-aqia-13-11-17-sm-n950f-fd-n-ironman-rom/
Good luck!

I use the Soldier ROM with NOX kernel. I don't know if is the best, but is better than the stock ROM.
Old thread but I am finally looking to root my S8 as it's getting really slow and battery is pretty ****ty. Thinking a lite rom combined with an optimised kernal is the way to go, problem is there is so many and I couldn't find this covered anywhere.
The phone is fine with Stock Pie and NX 29 kernel.
I won't back to custom roms. I used renovate ice, hades and Alexis roms, but all these 3 have awful photo quality.
Photos mean to be viewed even after 50 years, so they must be good.
That's why I prefer stock rom. Camera is such a great piece o hardware. Cheers
My 6T would arrive tomorrow, my nexus 6p died couple days ago and 6T is the way to go!! I heard that the stock ROM on 6T is really good already, since I haven't taken a look at it, I am not sure what additional feature I can get from the custom ROM? Or should I even bother flashing a custom ROM? Please don't get me wrong, I do think all custom ROM must be fantastic, I am just not sure what the difference are yet.
Another question if you don't mind, I watched some 6T review on YouTube, I see that the speed is fast, but not smooth, they did a comparison between 6T and iphone xs, xs provides much better user experience on animation. I see that we can change the animation speed on developer mode, but since I haven't gotten the phone yet, would that provide the same experience as XS did? Or is there any custom ROM out here can do it?
Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thank you very much

This is my first oneplus device as well. I was fortunate enough to be broke until the McLaren came out. I'm rooted and magisk with a custom kernel. I can't think of anything else I would want that you can't do with magisk. Try stock and see what you think. This phone is great! I walk around like Ron Jeremy wearing skinny jeans with this device. There's a confidence that comes with this phone.
Comparing this phone to an iPhone XS is like comparing apples to mailboxes. iOS is a completely closed ecosystem, where Android is not. Of course things are going to "look better" on an iPhone because apps and the operating system itself are designed specifically for the hardware and vice versa. I can't stand iPhones, and I'll say this is easily the best Android phone I've ever had. With a few minor tweaks, you should be able to get whatever result you're after, because the hardware in the 6T is top notch.
Stock OOS now is much more stable than every custom ROM now, so i will suggest you to try stock OOS, may be with Magisk (ROOT) and see, what you can achieve with that.
At this moment no customs have working FP, but devs are working on it. If you don't mind about FP - go and try any of it.
What is fp?
Finger print scanner.
Keep it stock, it's great. Keep it at least until FP is supported in custom.

I do agree with you, I am not trying to compare 6T with XS, I always use Android phone. What I do like about XS is the smoothness experience it provides to users, 6T's speed is over-killing XS, but I can definitely tell XS is smoother than 6T in the UI part from the video, which I think everyone would like to have that in their own phone.
And of course!!! This is the best Android phone we can get for this price!!! I am happy I am going to have this phone tomorrow!! Really exited.

Really helpful suggestion, will definitely keep it in stock for now. Any idea we can make the UI smoother?
Speed up animation speed in developer options.

can you give me an advice about what you did after you root the phone besides custom kernel? So far I haven't seen a need to use a custom kernel, any other COOL feature you can think of?

I did usqe a a custom kernel and I think it may have improved the battery a little bit, but other than that I disable a couple apps and I use greenify. I dont think I could drain this phone in one day if I tried. I am using an app called Magic Fluids as my live wallpaper with the graphics turned all the way and it's not even the least bit warm. Cool app for showing off. Here's a Pic of kinda what it does.
