The functionality of the navbar can be modified extensively. You can make it autohide like the dock in OS X or the taskbar in windows, you can add custom buttons to it, change the location of the buttons, change what the buttons do and give them longpress functionality, and so forth.
But you can't make it do the one thing that makes PIE brilliant: be always hidden, and pop up instantly as you slide from an edge onto a button, and simultaneously and instantaneously disappear and activate the button as you lift your finger.
So I like the PIE metaphor, but I don't like its semicircle shape or the fact that you can't customize it. Therefore, how can I give the navbar the functionality that PIE has, underlined above? Or, not as good but still better than default PIE, how can I make PIE flat instead of semicircle?
Personally I hate PIE, find it annoying. I hope it never finds a way into AOSP.

That's fine. It's also completely irrelevant lol... I'm just looking for info on how I can modify the navbar to have PIE functionality (or alternatively, how to change PIE to a flat shape like the navbar).
You're right. I probably shouldn't have posted.
I've been wanting the same thing. Hopefully its possible.

You know you can disable it right? Even on PA you don't have to use PIE if you don't want to.
why not simply using tablet ui. you get one small combined bar, left side buttons right side status informations and notifications.
personally i love the pie idea *not the flat bar* coz of full screen gaming..

Because that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. It doesn't feature what I explained above..."the one thing that makes PIE brilliant: be always hidden, and pop up instantly as you slide from an edge onto a button, and simultaneously and instantaneously disappear and activate the button as you lift your finger."
It's the combination of not being on the screen ever except for a split second, and the ability to slide onto a button and lift up to activate it.
You are a developer, do you know what I would have to modify to make the navbar function like this? Or, alternatively, to make PIE in a flat, navbar-like theme instead of sci-fi semicircle?
I think PIE beats any cyonegen ROM functions...PIE will end up being part of android OS in the future, its so simple and clean, it can't be annoying because the blackberry z10 utilizes touch/swipe everything to use the phone..

I think another idea about Pie, would be to have a Navbar that comes up like pie. I mean, that when you drag the finger up from the bottom, rather than having a semicircle (pie) shape, you could have the a rectangular bar with buttons (something like the nav bar). So rather than dragging the finger diagonally to the buttons, the user could drag up(start rectangular pie) and then drag to the left or right.
I know it sounds a bit wonky, but I think it's a neat idea. I would make a few conceptual images later today. IMO pie in it's current form is amazing. I am really looking forward to see where Pie development goes.
I believe AOKP has a navbar option that auto-hides it with a small trigger to bring it back up, similar to the Windows auto-hide taskbar option.

That's EXACTLY what I'm describing. I love PIE, I don't love the semicircle shape, I prefer a bar shape. At the same time, you can customize the navbar but you can't customize PIE, so I'd like to just give PIE functionality to the navbar.

Ya a lot of ROMs do. It doesn't really accomplish anything like what PIE does (as described in my posts above). That's why I'm trying to give PIE functionality to the navbar.
It doesn't really seem like it would be very complicated to theme PIE into a flat bar shape, to look like the navbar. I'm willing to do the coding if someone can explain what I need to do. Really though, like I've been saying, the navbar is customizable whereas PIE isn't, so I'd prefer to code PIE functionality into the navbar.

I suppose there's some difference. I use LMT to get PIE controls on CM 10.1 (the default implementation is pretty limited) and it's not much different from the AOKP feature I mentioned. I hope you find what you're looking for.

No it is not. The topic of this thread is about whether it is possible to create a hybrid of pie and the navbar with the appearance of the navbar but with the functionality of PIE. If you wish to discuss the navbar, you are free to discuss it in your own thread.
Furthermore, this thread is in the Q&A section. OP asked a question, so your post should answer his question. This is not General Discussion.

Thanks but it's not at all what I'm trying to accomplish. People have offered up various alternatives so I should be clear:
What PIE does is very unique, and things like hidden navbar and button savior are entirely unlike it. It's the mechanism of sliding from an edge > buttons appear > lift finger > button activates as the menu disappears. It's a very brilliant, modern paradigm, seen in UIs like Ubuntu Phone

So, the Nexus 6 is huge. That is not exactly a bad thing, but one handed use difficult. The screen is gorgeous but makes the device hard to use in one hand for the majority of its owners. Since the Nexus 6 runs stock Lollipop, it doesn't come with any features that make one handed use any easier when you need it. I made this thread with one goal in mind: A place to share any mods or apps that you know of that improve one handed use. Please leave a post in this thread with any mods that you know of and I'll update my post with a list of all the mods mentioned. Also, please mention if the mod or app requires root or not. The whole Nexus 6 community thanks you for your help. :victory:
APPS
LMT Launcher (Root/No Root) - Gesture based homescreen launcher.
SwiftKey Keyboard (No Root) - Keyboard with compact mode for one handed typing.
Swype Keyboard (No Root) - Same as SwiftKey.
Pie Control (Root/No Root) - Navigation bar that you can use by swiping in from any side. Has many settings that can be configured.
MODS
LiquidSmooth ROM - Allows you to rearrange the navigation bar icons, letting you position the icons towards one side for easier one handed use.

Swiftkey may have a feature that makes the keyboard smaller for typing with one hand. I know the feature exists for tablets, not sure if it also exists for phones.
Use lmt launcher. Works without root too
Swiftkey and Swype both offer a reduction in keyboard size for the N6.
Use Pie Control. Doesn't require root. You swipe from the side of screen to a set of preconfigured settings. Pretty good
I managed to learn how to type one handed with mine and I have small hands. The only issue for me is trying to reach the back or multitasking button depending on which hand is holding the phone. If I could move that closer, I'd be beyond happy. The only way I can reach is now is sliding my hand down and holding it on the bottom. I just get nervous doing that one handed as I really don't want to see if my case will protect my phone if I drop it.

In liquid smooth you can change the position of the buttons by inserting menu button to the LEFT side (still appears on the right). Helps a lot don't know if other ROMs have this also.
I use extended desktop and pie controls on the right side of the phone
Thanks for the recommendations everyone! I just updated my post to include the lists of mods and apps that you all gave.:good:
dont forget the MCR Mod Pack! allows you to swap your nav keys around and toggle left/right handed use. comes bundled with double tap to wake and notification light use. First thing i'd download onto my nexus tbh, dispenses with all that messing around for individual mods

I haven't tried it yet, but I think there's now a Lollipop/art-compatible version of Xposed. Not all the modules work, so I don't if whatever Xposed-based solution the OP had in mind would work, but it might.
Flygrip
Try PAC-ROM. It has a app circle bar that is fully customizable and allows you to tap a particular are on the side of your screen to get a 'pie-ish' circle app launcher!
Since xposed is working now, you can use "Niwatori" and "one hand mode" modules. these will re-size the whole screen according to your liking. And MCR modpack has the one sided nav bar
When I got my s7 with marshmallow, I loved that the homescreen icons were essentially the material design style in their full glory.
But when I took the ota for nougat, all my icons changed to the new theme style. It shrinks the original icon, puts it in a square box with rounded corners and a random solid colored background. I hated it. But none of the reviews about the nougat update even mentioned it.
I bring it up here because I see that the s8 is the same style. What did everyone else think about it?
I hate the fact that the icons are modified and the result is not what the original designers of those icons intended. To me they look tacky.

You can change back to normal icons in Settings, under Display.
You can have any icons you like, Nova launcher for example can be customised in a crazy number of ways. With Samsung's theme store, you have even more choices if you want to use the stock launcher for some reason. The stock icons have no relevance, you don't have to see them.

I'm wondering if it's possible to get the same style multitasking that you get with the pixel where you get your launcher when you swipe up?
Lawnchair v2 + lawnstep magisk module will give you Pixel app switcher and recents.
Meanwhile everyone with a Pixel got rid of their horrid multitasking/recents/drawer scheme in about 2 seconds. In my own experience they're possibly the worst design choices I've yet encountered in Android. There is a reason it was panned hard in the reviews.

Yes it totally sucks. Google has lost it. I can't stand the zoom out/zoom in animation when multitasking that way there's no feeling in it. They should had done it the iOS way. Also what's the point of gesture navigation if you are still gonna have the navbar taking up space. It's retarded. It's like they decided to stop half way.
Totally agree; it's so bad I'm baffled as to how it saw release. And yeah, the entire purpose of having nav gestures is to gain screen real estate via removal of the man bar making their implementation an utter failure to achieve what they're supposed to do in the first place. Lots of talk about this over on those forums which I image you've perused. IMO someone should have lost their job and I'm talking at the very top, whoever gave it the go-ahead is clearly not qualified to work on anything related to a cell phone.

The new font for the AOD, Lockscreen, and Notification shade is old school Samsung (S3 style). Also, the squircle icons in settings. The update breaks many themes so I'd perhaps wait until developers can update. Overall, I'm not thrilled with the update and will try to rollback until things are fixed.
I find the finger print reader works a lot better than it did before. I hated it before but works well now.
Still no esim on US unlocked devices..
Got the 3.0 update today on my N986B UK unlocked. I like the double tap to turn off the screen - I was missing that coming from a OnePlus 7T.
Not sure I like the strange new look of the volume controls though. To me they look like a row of test tubes filled with different levels of liquid. They don't match the rest of the UI. I'll give them a bit longer to see if I can get used to them, but I may switch back to the old volume controls via Good Lock. I'm also kinda missing the chunky app icons from before. The new itty bitty icons look too small to my eyes.
On the plus side the fingerprint reader is definitely quicker and more accurate now. All in all the switch from Android 10 to 11 on the Note 20 Ultra definitely feels like more of a leap forward than it did on my Pixels where the improvements were almost too subtle to notice.
hello I got update android 11 ui 3 on unlocked usa version note 20 ultra, is it smooth or will it break the device?
one thing I miss is in Settings/Apps you cannot see the system apps anymore, which I miss, and in developer options the options to select icon shape is gone, but otherwise not much to complain about, wish Android would sort out the icon shapes, Google has now gone from the round to rounded squares, Huawei just went from rounded squares to circles, Samsung is squircle (now with no option to change it) unless you go for themes (even then the themes dont changes settings icons) so thats not ideal. But so far battery life is a good step up, only been running 11 for 3 days but am at 6 hrs SoT with 50% battery left (see screengrab) I never go that on Android 10.
