Is it possible to change the 4G indicator in the status bar to for example LTE or maybe even something custom?
I have root access, maybe there even is an app for that?
4.5G instead of 4G+ for example would look better.
Well, for some phones, AT&T is turning LTE into a 5Ge logo, for some marketing reason, so we probably can do something similar. Haven't seen an app for it though.

there's no app since that info is contained in the sim. Custom ROMs do it but there is no standalone app at the moment.

As far as I have read on e.g. Samsung phones you just could edit the build.prop.
Seems like there are different icons stored for each carrier.
I haven't found the option in any file so far, OxygenOS seems to store it anywhere else. Some CustomROMs do support it.
Is there a way to find out which file exactly contains the information?

Are you sure it‘s contained in the SIM? My provider (telekom.de) usually shows LTE on all phones. Also I have 3SIMs from all 3 providers here in Germany, everyone shows 4G. I don‘t think that it has something to do with the SIM.
Mine shows VoLTE

Has nothing to do with the network status. VoLTE = Voice over LTE which just indicates that all calls are done on the 4G network.
I‘m talking about the 4G icon next to the signal indicator.

I saw LTE yesterday in my notification bar, and that was the first time I saw it in 2 weeks. I always have 4G, but I believe that's HSPA+. Anyone have anything similar, and how they would fix it?

Maybe there are issues with LTE in your area? If you didn't change anything on the phone I would reboot it just to be sure but it's probably a coverage issue.
I'm gonna talk to Rogers today, cause I should have LTE around my area.

HSPA+ is H+, not 4G. Test your connection speed if you're unsure, anything over 10mbps (especially for upload) is most likely LTE. I get around 24-36mbps up here in Canada.
Edit: Ah, that might be different for each carrier then. I definitely get H+ when I am on HSPA+.
8mb/s. On download, I don't believe those are LTE speeds, and if they are they're pass poor.
Also, never seen H+ on my GS4, so I think 4G is HSPA+.

On the AT&T version, when on LTE, there is a small print "LTE" under the 4G symbol. The term 4G has been abused so much, God knows what it means on any given device.
I`ve got the rogers one and it says LTE when theres LTE and 4G when there isn`t.
Check your apns and make sure its ltemobile.apn set up ?

I think it might be a radio issue with the stock ROM. It was the same on the S2 Skyrocket, some radios worked better than others. The Radio I had on my S2 when I switched over to the S4 showed LTE in my area constantly. Previous radios on that phone were hit and miss...some a lot better than others. I guess we will have to wait until the BootLoader is unlocked (for AT&T S4s) and other basebands (radios) are released until we can test and see which one works better in each area.
My S4 has a pretty good connection now, but it too shows 4G where it use to show LTE. Like I said, some radios do better than others when handling LTE connections.
So apparently the representative lied to me and said that I would have LTE, but my region doesn't support it. That's awesome : /. Thought it doesn't explain why I had it for a brief period. Maybe it came from a tower with LTE. Weird.
Well, This things going back unless a representative can give me a decent deal : /

Are you positive that your area doesn't have LTE? Just because the phone is capable of having LTE doesn't mean you are guaranteed an LTE signal. You have to be within the LTE broadcast area and, your phone's modem (radio) has to pick up that LTE signal. Like I said before, the phones radio has a lot to do with it. Some just handle LTE connection (and all connections) better than others. Radios are flashable, but the bootloader has to be unlocked, with custom recovery installed and different versions of the radio have to be available before Devs can make them flashable. Some will do better than others. It's just a matter of trying them when they are available.

As you can see my phone won't show LTE in the status bar
When I look in the "about" this is what I see
When checking with a tool like LTE Discovery this is what I get
I think I lost the LTE when flashing to polish firmware
...got it back when I flashed a baltic one.
The firmware I should use NEE for nordic contries won't give me LTE and the Xnote dont work either
...any help ?
Would like to use stock or Xnote firmware
It's just an icon rename, LTE is 4G!

LTE icon is region specific. International-based roms, such as X-Note, use 4G instead of LTE. Rogers roms in Canada use LTE as well (not that that matters ).
If youre note is rooted you can add the following line in your /system/csc/others.xml
<CscFeature_Framework_ReplaceDataTypeIconAsOpBrand>TMH<CscFeature_Framework_ReplaceDataTypeIconAsOpBrand>

There was a problem with this code ^^ because of browser rendering and WYSIWYG.
Code:
<CscFeature_Framework_ReplaceDataTypeIconAsOpBrand>TMH</CscFeature_Framework_ReplaceDataTypeIconAsOpBrand>
This is what I used and I tossed it FIRST in others.xml, but it didn't change, so I did some digging around and found out that if you toss it in feature.xml it will work. Pasted UNDER any feature.
I'm on 4.4.2 if that makes any difference.
Here its in my others.xml and it works

Actually, no, it's not. LTE is 3.9G. It's the step between 3G and 4G.
But in terms of the icon on the device, yes, they are the same thing.

Nope, not correct. LTE is 4G, not 3.9G.
In fact, LTE is term about technology, and 4G is about generation.
4G may be WiMAX or LTE. Hence LTE is 4G, but 4G is not always LTE, because 4G may also be WiMAX.
But your are correct that in term of the icon on Note 3, they are referred to the same thing.

They're really not.
Long-Term Evolution is 3G Transitional in the family of 3GPP, following directly after HSPA & HSPA+. It is commonly known to be 3.9G, or Pre-4G.
4G is 3GPP LTE-Advanced and WiMAX Advanced.
LTE falls too far short of the required download speed of 1 Gbit/s to call it 4G. LTE has a maximum download speed of 326 Mbit/s.
But providers market it as 4G, and the general population swallows the lie. Even though they(the providers) know damn well it's not 4G. (I had a lovely debate at T-Mobile HQ about that.)

yes, you are right, but:
...ITU later decided that LTE together with the aforementioned technologies can be called 4G technologies.
...to differentiate LTE Advanced and WiMAX-Advanced from current 4G technologies, ITU has defined them as "True 4G"

This thread is pretty funny
Many have already stated the simple fact that by name '4g and LTE' are interchangeable..
They are of the same radio.
When I had my Z2 it was running UK firmware, it displayed 4G icon on my phone on AT&T network. When I flashed the phone with Euro Unbranded firmware , LTE icon got displayed.
It just depends on the firmware customization, so either way you are getting LTE speed but the icon displays different depending on the firmware installed

You're not getting LTE... 4G should be displayed for LTE.
Have you updated to 4.5.5 already? 4.5.4 was a fix for vodafone NL users with this exact problem.

Mine shown "LTE" for LTE, not 4G. I get the H+ when on HSPA+ (TMobile here, FTR).
I don't think I've ever seen "4G". Maybe it's because TMo has multiple technologies it markets as 4G, so it's ambiguous.
Koodo in Canada also displays 4G+ for LTE. But if on a Telus SIM (same network as Koodo) it shows up as LTE. Speeds are the same. Looks like the OnePlus database for carriers is not really up to date.

If LTE/4G was working properly for the OP then either LTE or 4G should be displayed, NOT H+ which is HSDPA (3G) here in Australia.

Yeah I just noticed that after all this searching around, WTF kind of dumb move is that to alienate all those version users like that. Smh the reason why I didn't even take the time out to see if my band was included before purchasing was because of the news the released about how much more LATE bands they were including with this model.

Better call quality and better voice coverage if it's an area where ATT doesn't have HSPA on 850Mhz or an LTE only site..... Just tried on mine, still HSPA for voice.
