Bricked Essential phone - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I just joined and this is my first post so pardon any stupid questions/statements I made
My Essential phone suddenly switched off while driving and it seems like it self-bricked itself - there is (almost) no life to the phone besides it coming up as "Qualcomm" when plugged into my laptop.
I've tried the following:
Hard-resetting it with the volume down/up + power button many times, for longer than a minute, with no response from the phone, so I can't get to fastboot etc.
Charging it with different 3rd party chargers/cables
Using adb (but can not get debugging mode on)
Charging it for atleast an hour before repeating the above
I've read other forums/topics and I can't seem to find a solution.
Another thing, I've made zero mods to the phone.
Can someone please help me, I'm using an old LG G3 at the moment lol.
Thanks

came across this yesterday and remembered this post....try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEERGDgTw-M

Thanks for this ... Not sure how to proceed though, seems like each Android maker has their own specific solution (LG has their volume up battery out charger in, vs Samsung holding all of their buttons) so not sure what to do ... any suggestions?

That sucks dude sorry to hear. Did you ever figure it out? My wife has the ph-1 & hers just shutdown on her running latest bone stock build. No root, no mods, it refused to boot for me. After several attempts I gave up for a while. I've been dealing with android for years. I was baffled. So I went back to it & held down power+vol up one last time & the damn thing boots after about 20 seconds. So far its doing fine. This just happened earlier this morning. Before it booted up I tried everything like you & it wouldn't respond. Weird. Definitely keeping an eye on it for now.

It was a few hours. I tried for like an hour to boot it & gave up. Came back to it right after I made my first post quoting you here. Held the power+vol up x'ed fingers & it vibrated then powered on. Let me know if you get yours to boot. I'm going to look into this after work today. I'll talk to ya later. There's gotta be a way to figure your situation out.

Been trying for the past week ... can't seem to get it booted - I literally just put it into the fridge (zip lock bag to [hopefully] keep the moisture out). I've seen a post where someone tried this and it worked. Thanks man, I would appreciate any help I can get

Did anyone try asking essential support?
They've been very helpful to me.
Also had this happen to me, just left it overnight and then it booted. No probs since.

My post from her other day didn't seem to post .
In it I suggested you hold down power + vol down for 15sec (maybe longer) as I think that does a virtual battery pull, but you might need to try some other combos. You should maybe put phone in draw for a week or two, then try .
Also see,
https://forum.xda-developers.com/es...icked-essential-phone-regular-update-t3732566
If the "chilling" trick works you might have a bad solder joint, not good, likely cause intermittent problems if it does fix. Or maybe phone shuts down internally if too cold (

thanks for the advice ... I tried all combinations for atleast a minute:
power + vol down
power + vol up
power + vol up and down
doesnt seem to have any life. I'm not sure if I mentioned but there's no sign of LED lights when charging - only sign of life is the Qualcomm port on device manager (windows) ... Sadly this country does not have any authorized entities to open up the phone

It sounds like your only choice is to try leaving it for a prolonged period eg a couple of weeks (don't charge it) & cross fingers you get lucky like some of the others have. Though it does sound like it may be bricked (might be worth installing Essential drivers on another PC & seeing if that gives you any thing more than the Qualcomm port)
I'd be in the same situation as you as I'm in Australia these days. It doesn't seem like local repair shops have any special Essential service tools, but if you have no chance of warranty repair local repair shop might still be able to identify some internal failure even if only basic electronic tests and order part (though might be hard/impossible to identify specific component failure without a circuit diagram or working phone to compare to), so long shot.

PS. You probably tried this already but just in case, try boot into recovery, hold down
vol up + vol down
(NOT power)
probably won't work, but just to cover all bases

Apologies for the late reply ... Phone has been like this for about 3 weeks now ... still no luck; will try the Essential drivers now
Yeah I think I'll end up taking it to a local repair shop; hope for the best and expect the worst I guess

Haha read this at work and gave me some hope, but sadly nothing.
When my phone is plugged into my laptop, Windows makes that signature connection sound; and when I hold power+vol, it effectively makes the "disconnect" followed by the "connect" sounds again, which is surprising

My phone is also hard bricked not even showing led but detecting on PC . currently I don't have PC but yesterday I read about QPST tool . It has an option to backup and restore . I don't know I sound stupid but is there a way to restore firmware of another essential phone through QPST tool . I've tried every thing else .

Hard bricked nexus 4 help please?

So last night I hard bricked my nexus 4. its rooted, with cyanogenmod 10.1 ROM, and ive never had any issues with this phone. I have no idea what happened, but I sent a text message to someone, and it powered itself down. it was fully charged when this happened, so I know its not the battery. ive done some research, and its a true hard brick. no bootloader, no recovery, I just get a red/orange flashing light if I hold down the power button. google said im still under warranty, and they will still replace it even with it being rooted. My question is, is it possible to fix without having to get a replacement, or JTAG? If anyone has had any success, please help.
And like I said, I was only sending a text. I have no idea why it bricked, it restarts itself once in a while randomly, but this time it didn't turn back on.
Try plugging it into the wall for about 5 minutes then try turning it on again. If it doesn't work, RMA it. Why would you risk your warranty and JTAG it?

No, I DONT want to JTAG it. im looking for alternatives. if its possible to fix a hard brick without JTAG or using my warranty. If at all possible, I want to fix it, because I have a lot of pictures and everything on there that I would like to get out of it. I don't want to lose them. JTAG is my last resort if I cant get it replaced, but they said they would. I want my stuff off it though.

This is your last hope. If it doesn't work, RMA it and request for your data to be saved. Not sure if they can do it, but just ask.

ok so if the nexus 4 wont go into download mode, or fastboot, or anything else, I have no choice but to RMA it right? cuz the ONLY response im getting from it is a red/orange flashing light when I hold down the power button. other than that, nothing happens.

Did you press volume down first and then the power button both for a few seconds to get into fastboot mode?
Nope. The ONLY time it has any sign of life is if the charger is connected to it and I hold down the power button. If it's NOT connected to the charger, pressing the power button does absolutely nothing. I can't go into recovery mode, download mode, or the bootloader. I've tried charging it overnight, (and part of the next day) left it off the charger for over a week, it shows up as "Qualcomm-something" when I plug it into a computer, but I can't do ANYTHING with it connected to a computer either, and after I got my replacement, I tried taking out the battery and putting it back in. There was still no change......I've literally done EVERYTHING short of JTAG. Trust me, I searched all over google, and XDA, and tried everything. As far as I know, hard bricking is rare, but it happens. And it just happened, to happen to me. So unless there's a solution someone knows of that I didn't just list, my last option is JTAG.
sinndissension said:
yep. ive done EVERY combination of holding down the buttons, no response. when I plug it in to a laptop, the laptop beeps, like the USB connection sound, but the nexus doesn't show up on the computer. I know the computer recognized what kind of phone it was, cuz the first time I plugged it in, I got a pop up message saying "installing qualcom drivers", or along the lines of that. other than that, NOTHING has worked. If theres ANY fix for this, id like to give it a try, cuz ALL my stuff is on there.

Try charging it for a while and try again in a few hours or better yet tomorrow. Sometimes that helps bro. If that doesn`t help you`ll have to take it in for repair an maybe they can salvage your data if they are wiiling to do that. Good luck.
I think it's just your battery(RLOD) instead of a brick.
See this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250454
I wouldn't be worried about your files stored on your phone because I think Google has more work to do than search in peoples pictures. What I would worry about is your warranty since you have a custom rom, unlocked bootloader and root...

Well, found out it WAS a hard brick. Google replaced it with my warranty. For some reason they returned my money before I even got the chance to send the broken nexus 4 back. Didn't even mail it. So I'm assuming I don't have to send it back. So I'm gonna JTAG the hard bricked nexus, and hopefully it'll work again.
Thanks everyone for your help.

You may not be doing it right. When I get the flashing light on mine it means I forgot to let go of the power button fast enough. When it vibrates, let go of power button immediately but keep pressing the volume. Does your phone vibrate a few seconds prior to the flashing light?

so i have the same problem. was about to tweet with full battery so my question is what did you end up doing? Did you fix it or abandon it?
Weird. I've had the "red light of death" 2 hours ago because i didn't put the phone on the charger and it had like 4%. Pressing Volume down + power got it to enter fastboot and i was able to start the phone normally so it's charging booted

Ok, I got mine replaced because it was still under warranty, and normally, the manufacturer cant tell its rooted or unlocked if its a true hard brick, (rooting and unlocking voids your warranty.) So i got mine replaced.
If your NOT under warranty still, your ONLY option if you want to fix it is JTAG. Google it, it costs about 50 bucks on average, but its cheaper than a Nexus 4. Research JTAG before you try it though. Or you have to buy a new one. I still have my only one, and i basically use it for parts for my newer N4.
Is it a true HARD brick, or just a soft brick?

its a hard brick. ive tried it all bought a new battery installed it etc. ive looked up jtag and i have the money but idk if i should do it. do you recomend it? i have no experience doing anything like it and im planning on getting the iphone 6 in the fall but i cant stand not having a phone till then especially since high school starts soon.
But the reason im sure its a hard brick is cuz when it shut down the battery was like 50 and charging and it froze for 25 seconds or so then shut down and refuses to boot or show any signs of life now except a blinking or solid red light but its not the red light of death because i replaced the battery therefore i came to the conclusion that it is hard bricked.
i know ive said alot of unecessary information but my question is do you think i should buy the jtag thing? do you reckon its easy to do? or maybe i could pay an experienced professional to do it?
thanks for the reply btw

Won't start up help needed

Okay about two weeks ago I updated to 4.4.2 from 4.2.2(I think that's the one?) on my s4 and I've hated the update. I decided to root my phone using muniz method and it worked perfectly. I even changed to the nc1.
So, after using my phone without issues for two weeks roughly I noticed last night it started to randomly turn off while texting. It would just auto restart but it happened every 5-10 minutes. After an hour it started happening more often so I plugged my phone in. Now my phone will not even turn on. When I insert the battery the samsung start screen appears for about a second and then goes black. I have to pull out the battery for the phone to do ANYTHING. If the phone is plugged in while trying this and I insert the battery I literately get NOTHING. No samsung screen or anything.
Things I've tried.
Swapped the battery.
boot into odin
boot into safemode
plugged it in while trying to boot
Swapped the usb cord
taken out sim card
Some things to note is that I did not install any new app before this had happened. It was working the same for about two weeks with no issues.
When plugging in my phone to charge or anything I never get an led light at the top of my phone.
I seriously need some help with this. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Are you plugging it in to the stock wall charger? Your best bet is to get it to boot into download mode long enough to reflash NB1.

Yeah using stock wall charger from a wall, computer, and even a different charger.
Is download mode the one where you hold vol down + power + home?
If so it brings up the screen that asks you to press the volume up but it dies before it can ever make it to the downloading screen...

Thanks, i'll keep playing with it but so far it just shuts off instantly in about a second or two.
If I bring it to best buy and they take it or anywhere else will I be shunned for rooting my phone?

If it won't start they won't know it's rooted. They'll try to flash the firmware which will remove root if they're successful, so again they won't know

I couldn't do factory reset because the phone wouldn't stay on long enough to do ANYTHING.
So as an update to this...
I was on my way to the closest store with samsung experience which is about an hour away from me and when I almost get there my phone RANDOMLY turns on...
I couldn't be more pissed and happy at the same time. So, obviously I try messing with it a bit and it shuts off again. This time I can get it to turn on after about 15 tries. Long enough for me to do a factory reset!
It lasted a good 30 minutes to an hour and it shut off again.
Hardware issue or is anyone else having this issue with 4.4.2 nc1?
No I haven't on mine you all have to bring it in for repair

Okay so I brought it by best buy and the guys couldn't flash it or do anything to it because it wouldn't turn on at all. They tried several batteries etc.
So, I decided to try the phone doctors and the guy thought it could be a malfunction in the power button because the phone tries to boot up any time you put the battery in. You don't have to hit any buttons and you can't insert the battery without it trying to power on.
I'll cross my fingers that's the problem and they phone doctor guy told me he has never seen this issue with an s4 but it was really common in s3's.
I go back in two hours to see if they have fixed it!

The s2 had this problem too and one way to confirm it was to pull the battery and put it back in. If it booted right away it was the power button. So it sounds like you're on to something.

Well, I was really hoping for the best and I thought they really had my problem figured out. When I got back to the store they told me they basically checked and rewired everything they could and it was still doing this. They told me they can't fix it and didn't charge me anything.
It looks like I have a lemon...

I would but they don't accept anything past a year. If it ever boots up again I'm going to install a different rom and just cross fingers
I've been informed my phone might still be under factory warranty. Just out of speculation, if you root your phone and it ends up malfunctioning what would they do if you send it in for warranty? I'm not sure if my issue is hardware or software related at all.

The easiest way is plugging the usb cable (which is connected to your computer) to your phone while holding volume down button. No need to press power button. From download mode you can boot to recovery etc with the help of your pc.

did not work
This sounds more and more like a case for Yota's repair center. If there wasn't something broken in the device one of these methods described in this thread should have worked.
Sounds like hardware to me.
I had the same issue. Left it on the table with the e-ink screen on top, came back hours later, the clock was 90 minutes behind and the phone dead. Resetting with 10 Seconds ON/OFF button didn´t work. Had to send it in. 2 weeks later got it back. They said they had to change the whole motherboard, even got a new IMEI with it. Then a few days later I tried the main camera and it did not work, error message by Android, unaccessible camera... Then by pressure on the camera it worked sometimes, sometimes only misty lines, sometimes splitscreen mode, sometimes not. Maybe a mistake by the service while reassembling the phone? Anyway, had to send it in AGAIN, got it back, sold it on ebay with 130 Euros loss and bought a new white one because I love the principle and options of the second screen so much. The white one is a newer batch, they say with some new (and probably more reliable?) hardware, so up until now I am completely satisfied, no error for 6 weeks (fingers crossed...)
My old black one was maybe a monday batch

Hi Petra. Since you're using a Yotaphone as well, could I ask you to do a small favour for me please? After I had my YP rooted I accidentally deleted the system app "back screen manager". My back screen has stopped working since then. It'd be fantastic if you could just extract the system app from your phone and send it to me so that I can manually place the system app on my phone root folder. You don't have to root your phone for this. All you need is an App extractor from play store. And it will take less than 5 mins to extract and send it to me(Assuming that you are well versed with android OS). Here's my email address [email protected] or you could send me a link to the shared file. Do let me know if you are willing or not. Thanks a ton.

Nexus 6P Seemingly Dead

Hi all,
I have a Nexus 6P that behaved very strangely just today. The battery went down to about 23% and I plugged it in to charge (factory charger) and left for work. However, I came back and the phone now appears to be completely dead, no matter what I try. I've tried to reset the device by holding the power button, trying to boot into various modes such as bootloader or recovery, but the device just does not seem to want to start and the screen remains black. I've plugged it into the computer and it still continues to show no signs of life. What could be happening? Is there a possible fix at all or is it now just a brick?
The device was last booting PureNexus, Android 7.1.2 with the stock kernel and an outdated version of Magisk. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Hmm ... A question helping to investigate the problem might be the following ... Battery went down from 23% to 0% faster than usual? I am not sure but ... 8 hours are not usual for 23% while Doze is active ... Not sure tho ... Just wanted to help the investigation.
Good luck with your phone, it's a value-for-money beast!

Well, I'm not sure if the battery went down to 0%, since I plugged it into the charger when it was at ~23%.
It's still currently showing no signs of life.
You can try going to recovery mode or bootloader mode while charging ... Actually try the following:
1. Press VolumeUp+PowerOn button and hold them.
2. Connect the charger.
3. Pray and keep the buttons pressed for 30 seconds
Generally play with some combinations of the example above. It helped a friend once with the same problem on a Samsung J5 phone, it might help you. Not sure why and how tho, let's call it glitch.

I've tried all of these, but unfortunately none of worked and the Nexus 6P is still dead
Next step requires some tools, search for them right now!!
1. Open the shelter ( )
2. Remove gendly the battery because it is glued.
3. (Optional and I am unsure about that) Freeze the battery for 2-5 minutes to ressurect it (li-ion battery)
4. Place back the battery, pray and retry everything mentioned above
Good luck

If you have warranty RMA it, if take apart could void warranty. Not to mention if you try your self, I would buy new battery. Make sure its OEM and is gd quality, with temp sensor.

I'm a bit confused as to who I would go to; I bought this device refurbished from Best Buy, but they told me there would still be warranty on this, and I believe it's been less than a year since owning this device. Would I go to Google or would I go to Huawei...or Best Buy? Thanks!

My A1 "died" and i dont know why

Hello folks.
So I left my A1 charging at night, the alarm woke me up as usual in the morning. Just before leaving home I took it to check the time and then it was already "dead".
PS: The phone was never been knocked over, wet etc...
Symptoms:
- Black screen, as if was turned off / without battery;
- Buttons do not work;
- Doesn't react to any connections.
- Doesn't enters fastboot mod;
- It's not recognized by the computer;
- Also not charging.
Any help is welcome, best regards.
happened to me the other day on AEX, after flashing a kernel, turns out it does switch on but I had to press the power button for quite some time and then it switched off again upon minutes from switching on. I entered the recovery with the same method and installed another kernel, it works fine now

It's a possibility, but it's strange the phone has like 4 months of use, never had any problem.
I'm willing to try some stuff first, even open the phone to unplug and replug the battery on the mb.
Otherwise at my country (Brazil) Xiaomi has no warranty
I had this problem and it was just due to an loose flex cable. Try opening and reattaching them :good:

No problem, just two screws att the bortom and use the nails around the edge. Be careful not to break the plastic frame around the screen, it can be quite weak.

So yesterday a oppened the phone, disatached the flats and atatched then again, unfortunatelly didn't help =[.
We also made some tests and seems like it could be an issue with the battery seems like it's not charging nor receiving any charge.
Seems like the "regulator" of the battery or something like that is not working as it should.
I'm gonna try to test this a in a more acurate way, at least to be sure that it's the battery.
Probably on EDL mode. Try reflashing stock with MiFlash. Helped me once.

You can try make edl usb cable first, if not work then search mi a1 test point, you'll need to jump 2 point on motherboard with wire/pin.

The phone will power on without any battery attached at all, so remove it and see if you get life. If not, then it's not the battery.

So yesterday i tryed to make the phone enter at the EDL mode, by jumping the 2 points on the motherboard. Unfortunately the computer didn't recognized the phone at all, i'v tryed several times.
I'm starting to think that something related to the the motherboard just died.
I'll lend it to a tecnical that can fix it or at least confirm the death of the phone to me.

Just tested it yesterday, without success.
Even with the battery disconnected and ubs at computer or charger, the phone still not giving any signal of life.
Does it mean that it must be a serious problem?

Hello mate.
I'm sry for you phone, at my case i'm starting to believe that the mb/cpu died.
I was thinking that it could be the board at the bottom (ubs, mic jac) but i have been told that it's really rare this to happen.
Yesterday i tested the battery and it's fully charged, (so the battery isn't the problem)
I'm weeling to take it at the end of the week into a tec who can test all the hardware stuff in order to know what actually have failed.
Have u also tryed to engage ur phone at EDL Mode?

Hi.
Yep also tried shorting the test points, it does not respond to anything. Just totally dead.
Its sad cause i really loved that phone. I might buy a used cheap one with a broken screen and use its main board or other parts.
Thanks Knievel
