Rooting questions - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Just bought my 6T and I have some questions about root:
-Will rooting the 6T wipes internal memory (SD)?
-Can you update OTA while rooted?

Unlocking the boot loader in order to root wipes everything clean. No way around it.
Once rooted I believe you have to apply the full size OTA not the incremental, then make sure to reflash twrp/magisk. See the guides section for details.

Rooting has no effect.
When you unlock the BL it will wipe the phone.
Once that is done, you don't need to fear wiping the phone when rooting.
You can flash the full OTA on the phone by using "local install".
You cannot take the OTA directly since it is incremental and won't install.
Once you download the full OTA you should install, allow the phone to reboot and install again.
This will install on both A/B partitions.

Don't know.
I run stock OS, TWRP, ElementalX kernel and rooted with Magisk.
I add a few Magisk modules for customization.

Curious why that kernel instead of stock? Do you get better battery life out of it?

I wonder what the trade-offs of the custom kernel are...

Ok
Any module to have AOD on stock room?

[Q] Regarding 4.4

So, I got the OTA notification, and before I do something stupid, I have a few stupid questions I'm on stock 4.3, rooted, unlocked bootloader, custom recovery, xposed framework and franco kernel. I read in other people's threads that in order to not brick, I should go back to stock kernel, stock recovery and I'll lose root and unlocked bootloader, correct? If so, is wug's kit still usable on 4.4 to get root/unlock back? And regarding xposed, anything I should do about that, like go to stock framework lol or the framework doesn't affect the update? Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to risk a brick, and THEN ask many questions Thank you very much!
First of all this won't brick your phone. You have a few options:
1-download the ota zip, go into recovery, do a full wipe and flash the ota zip. (This is the quickest and easiest method. After doing this you will still have your custom recovery, and the contents of your internal storage will be untouched.)
2-Flash the factory images. (Your phone gets completely wiped, including your custom recovery.)

Just go into Wugs and flash the latest firmware directly, you won't have to change anything else.

Alright, thanks! according to method 1, will I lose root? If so, is it as easy as flashing supersu again, or do I have anything else to do? Thanks again!

Yes, root will be lost. But to get it back just download the latest supersu and simply flash it via recovery. Thats all.

Cleanest root

Hello everyone !
I currently have a H870 european LG g6.
I want to root my phone but I don't want to install TWRP.
I want the lightest and "as stock as possible" way to root.
Is it possible? Thanks a lot for your help !
Your NEED to unlock bootloader. Then ADB to root.
Why not have twrp installed? Great for backup restoring flashing latest root list goes on.
If you want a rom which is 'stock as possible' install Fulmics rom. You do need to unlock your bootloader and use TWRP to install the rom tho'.

?? He just wants root. Nothing else. No ROM.
Aight if you don't want any rom, you still got to unlock your bootloader cause you need to install TWRP to install magisk or supersu. Which root app do you prefer?
I have the US997 and want something similar. I want to root the stock rom with Magisk and still be able to take an OTA. Ideally, unlock, flash TWRP, root, and then flash back stock recovery. This is possible correct?

Yea you can do that. You can keep the stock rom if you want but you will need to flash TWRP to install magisk. Magisk comes with a .zip file which only can be installed with TWRP.

Nope, you always need a custom recovery to flash SuperSu or Magisk.
Anyway, why you don't want the custom recovery? You can always remove it by flashing the stock one.

I have read a lot of issues other users have trying to make TWRP to work. I was thinking it would be better for me if there was a way to skip TWRP when rooting my LG G6.

Zefie's TWRP doesn't have any major problems, official one is unable to mount system and has problems with backups, nothing to do with normal usage of the phone.

Thanks! I wish somebody knowledgeable would post an "Ultimate Guide to Rooting your LG G6" thread and make it a sticky. There are contradicting/incomplete instructions on when to press and release the Volume & Power button, when to disconnect the USB cable, etc.
I believe many simple questions on flashing recovery and rooting will keep coming back until a correct, complete and detailed step-by-step guide gets posted.

Normally the way to upgrade as long as you are doing official is to download the OTA and do a local update.
Then install TWRP. I never wipe to upgrade.

OK, since I only had custom roms and twrp and read somewhere that twrp didn't support official Ota I thought that to flash new Ota I had to wipe clean everything and reflash : x

No.
If you are on the stock OOS or the Beta OOS as long as you stay on the same stock or beta; you download the OTA and do a local install.
This preserves your data and you only need to install TWRP and Magisk again.
I don't understand people that whine about having to install TWRP or Magisk again since it only takes about 5 minutes to do correctly.
I just do an OTA local install and hook the phone up to my computer and re-install TWRP, etc.

Sorry, was not talking about you specifically.
Going from a custom ROM to OTA, you do need to wipe.
Going from any ROM to any other ROM, you need to wipe.
you can always "dirty flash" but there is no guarantee for wonky behavior.
On the other hand people want to take the OTA and preserve root.
Rooting take five minute so I don't understand the jumping through hooks to keep root.

about warranty if I root my device.

Hi there I'm new to root, my question is if I root my device will it void my warranty? I only got the device since Nov last year so if it will break the warranty then I'll wait till my warranty runs out. Thanks any feed back will be appreciate
No
Statement from OnePlus said:
The technical process of rooting or unlocking the bootloader does not void the warranty of a OnePlus device. However, we strongly suggest for you to only root or unlock the bootloader of your OnePlus device if you are confident in your understanding of the risks involved.
By accessing resources regularly unavailable to the software, you may damage your hardware during or after the procedure. Such damage is not covered under warranty. In warranty handling, we will first need to verify that any faulty behavior is unrelated to rooting / unlocking.

You can do what you want with youre phone. If you want out of the box phone again, flash MSM tool. This will wipe absolute everything in youre phone and lock the boot loader.

No, but when you want to install software updates you will need to either flash them through twrp and flash twrp again BEFORE you REBOOT. Then reboot to recovery and flash Magisk again to keep root.
Or you can go into magisk, choose uninstall (restore images) flash the update from the os system update. Then before you reboot, go back into magisk and choose install (after OTA option) then you can reboot.

why look on google? You have here a very good guide, step by step, by Fank Wizard

Yeah of course. If you use the TWRP method you don't have to do the adb part again, just flash TWRP and magisk again via TWRP.

I recommend always using the TWRP method otherwise you'll lose TWRP recovery after installing software updates.

I'm using these Magisk modules at the moment:
Busybox
Energized Protection
Viper4Android
YouTube Vanced
OnePlus stereo speaker mod
xXx No Limits ROM (this is a rom that works with Oxygen OS. You can debloat system apps, speed your system up, kill unwanted background applications... and more, with no need to flash a new OS or lose your data)
You can use a themeing app called substratum, but make sure the theme you're applying supports whatever ROM you're using.
Install a custom Kernel.
The possibilities are endless mate. Just make sure you read through whatever you are flashing, you don't want to end up with a brick.

I don't think I'm confident to do the kernel stuff, I have root all my samsung device before but I'm talking about few years back. That was still note 2 or note 3 lol and I flash custom rom before the rom looks cool lol.
Stereo audio and Dolby Atmos is my thing as well as viper and font.
But thank you so much for your help ?

Is it safe to flash a OTA a couple versions above yours?

Got a quick question. I'm on OOS 9.0.11 currently with bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed, and rooted with Magisk. I know how to flash correctly and keep root and recovery after. Is it safe for me to install the 9.0.17 OTA without flashing 12-16? Any issues that could arise from me not flashing the other OTAs first?
I jumped several versions without issue. As long as you are using the complete file (the ~1.8 GB) file you should be fine. You'll have issues if you use the incremental file (obviously).

That is correct. There is a new feature in TWRP that is supposed to eliminate the reflash, but I haven't tried that yet, I've just been flashing the installer, and rebooting to recovery, then flashing the rest.
