Don't know why you don't follow the instructions in the first post https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/official-oxygenos-beta-1-android-oreo-t3710003
I've updated them for both clean and dirty flash.

So im coming from nolimits rom, EVERY SINGLE install gives me error 7.
Ive tried deleting the asserts but makes no difference.
Any direction would be helpful, I dont understand what im doing wrong

You cannot update directly from an xXx rom cause you missed a huge bunch of updates... You need to clean flash and also have an vendor partition created from earlier open betas. Have you read the installation instructions in official open beta thread?

TBH, i wouldnt bother with 'saving' ur data. especially on OpenBeta, you'll run into more problems and issues

New User - Problem with Update after rooting

I'm sorry for having to post here, I'm a new XDA member and I've just started using my tablet and found out I can't post in the dev section. I'm not sure how else to get help and a previous boyfriend told me the xda-developers community was a great place so I thought I would try here.
I have the Nexus 7 (2013 edition) and I used WUG's method of rooting - everything went perfectly, but now I'm getting a notification that there is an update (an OTA update - I think that's what they are called?) and it doesn't apply. I'm not sure if I should have, but I did the bootloader unlock and installed a new recovery (TWRP - I think that's how it's spelled?. sorry again)...
Anyway.... At this point my tablet is working great, but I constantly see this notification for an update and I'm not sure what to do.. It says "touch to install" and I've done that but it just boots into my new recovery. If anybody has access to WUG in the dev forum, could you please ask him what I should do?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have the WiFi only version or the LTE version? Also, under your settings -> about phone, what build number are you currently on? Since you have rooted and installed a custom recovery, OTA updates will not install correctly. You have a couple of options in this regards, and I or someone will go over them once we figure out what version you are running.

Thanks for that:
Here's what you can do to install the update.
1) go to this thread and download either the odexed or deodexed version.
2) Reboot to recovery
3) Wipe Cache/Dalvik Cache
4) Flash the .zip file you just downloaded
5) Reboot your updated tablet.
OR
You can read here and try this.

Oh railed, thankyou so much - I was not sure if I would be able to get any more updates. If I do that, will it delete everything on my tablet? It did that when I did the change to an unlocked bootloader, and I had to reload everything.

All your data will be preserved. Only Wipe the Cache/Dalvik Cache, not the Data. Before you install go to Wipe -> Advance -> Check only Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Typically when an update comes out, someone will post a flashable update within a couple of hours so we can install them as well. Hope it helps.
Edit: As always before flashing anything, make a backup, by rebooting into recovery and selecting Backup (i check all the boxes).

Also.... If I just load the latest cyanogenmod on it, will that take care of it. I have the same old phone from my previous boyfriend and it's running cyanogenmod.. It will update the OS whenever a new version comes out and I don't lose the data like I did with the unlock bootloader thing?

I believe so, Cyanogenmod usually merges the updates pretty quickly into the code and you won't get any update notifications from Google directly any more. There are only nightly releases so far for this device if you feel like going that route.

Do you think I should go the cyanogenmod route?
I've really liked cyanogenmod on the phone on barnes&noble device they are on, but I've been scared to update this tablet since we've broken up and I don't have anybody that can help.

That's completely up to you and what you prefer... I like the stock android experience so far, but there are many options out there for custom ROMs besides CM. Take a look here and here and figure out if a ROM in there has something you want... the great thing about this is if you don't like it, flash something else until you find exactly what you like... that's how I plan to do it, once the ROMs get more stable with the 4.3 updates.

I use deodexed, as do a lot of people who like to customize. There's not a lot of difference between the two. Here is an article that explains it pretty well: Odexed vs Deodexed

[Q] I know this isn't Q&A but...

Ok, I know this isn't the Q&A forum, but I figured this was where the people that make the ROMs hang out and they knew what to do.
So, I have updated to NI2, I have root, I download the ROM, flash the kernal in Odin that each ROM asks I have on my device, have the most up to date safestrap installed, and I go to flash a ROM, I have tried 3 or 4 now, and I just can't get any to load. I wipe the phone, even did a full wipe after backing up pictures, etc. and still nothing. What am I doing wrong? Someone please tell me the regular step-by-step process that you guys do with this phone to switch ROMs. I'm not necessarily frustrated, just confused. I've only had my S5 for a few days and I've been out of the loop on flashing ROMs for about a year and a half, so I'm still getting caught back up on the advancements everyone has made to flashing. I appreciate the help you guys offer all of us non-developers, and hope to contribute something in the near future. Thanks.
Edit: Whenever I go to install a ROM it gives me this error
E: Unable to open zip file.
Error flashing zip '/external_sd/ROMnamehere.zip'

What version of Safestrap? Are you wiping and flashing over Stock slot?

Sounds like a corrupt download. Download from a computer and transfer to your phone then try again.
Also, Dev sections are strictly for development.

Yeah the threads say to flash in stock slot typically so I do. Should I not be? Most of them say to.

No definitely flash stock slot. I've seen that error in the past but only on an older build of Safestrap.

There are a number of reasons why a download could get corrupted ranging from the source server, a server in between, the client (device), router, etc.
OP, check the MD5 using an MD5 Checker from play store. Most ROM threads contain the ROM zip MD5 for verification.

What do you mean by it just stays open. Do you mean it never boots? Like a bootloop? If so, search 7.0 ROMs bootloop, you'll find the solution, tons of threads on the help and q&a here. But if you don't mean what I just explained then could you clarify?
Sorry for not being clear, i dont think it is bootloop. It boots into the rom no issues and i can use it normally and doesn't restart till a few minutes no matter what rom i flash.

If I were you I would flash back to stock and make sure you you don't have a hardware problem, If nothing else it's a chance to start over. I haven't gone to custom roms for these reasons, mine is my daily driver to and I can't afford to get caught without it.

No worries. Yeah I don't know what the issue could be, could be a ROM issue, it's weird though, but like the poster above me, it could be hardware failure and flashing stock would be a good way to find out.
I would love to go back to stock but how? All the tutorials are very hard for me to follow can you guide me to an easy one or tell me how?

I agree that they are a little hard to follow, I looked at them myself and it looks like the quickest way would be to go back to 6.0 and upgrade back to 7. But someone else could correct me on that.
For future reference, it's best to always twrp backup your stock rom before doing any kind of major changes especially custom roms. That way you can always fall back to original if something goes wrong.

I would go back to stock 6.0, if he hasn't upgraded to 7.0, I'll do some digging, find good guides, and post them here in a bit @Philo0o!

Alright if you wanna go the custom ROM route, don't update to stock 7.0, not many custom ROMs work with it's new firmware. I'll get you a guide to go back to stock 6.0 then!
Edit: Alright @Philo0o, here's a good page with all the firmware links for your phone, and the commands to flash the firmware are there for you. Let me know if you have any questions about that.
Also, when your ROMs aren't working, what are you doing to try again? what I mean is you could try a full data format in twrp. Not just a wipe of data, system, etc.. A full format isn't quite like going back to stock, but it may help if there are leftovers somewhere causing issues if that makes sense.
so if you wanna try a full format, backup your internal storage to a computer, or to an sd card, and then format, and then you will have a clean slate, move what you need back over to your phone and voila!
Ill look through that tutorial, and whenever i flash a rom i do a full a wipe

Alright, then yeah look through that tutorial. If the issue isn't there on stock, but is on custom ROMs, try asking in those threads

How to flash to another custom kernel.

I'm using a custom kernel on my rooted device and want to try out another. Do I need to flash back to the stock kernel before flashing to the other kernel or I can just flash it on top of my custom kernel?
If I have to flash back to stock kernel is there a place I could download the stock kernel?
Using EXKM and rom is 10.5.8.IN11AA
Sorry for the noob question I am completely new to this.
Although you can get by prolly by flashing another, I've always gone by flashing stock, and THEN the new kernel, and what I recommend. Believe others would do. As far as the stock kernel, I wanna say there's a thread somewhere that has them posted, but you may have to search.

Go here, download the 10.5.8 2023 BA variant for your device, confirm hash. Go to settings, syatem updates, cog wheel, local upgrade, select package. I THINK it'll let you flash it like an upgrade, but don't quote me, I am not to familiar with the device yet, or oneplus in general. Just flash magisk to other boot slot after if it says your device will no longer be rooted stuff, you know. The typical.
I'ma go to bed, but if that doesn't work, you can see about opening the .zip up, extract the payload and search google for a method that'll extract the kernel for you. Best of luck.
Oh, and in case it wasn't reiterated, back up persist partition too. Just in case, always. In case it wasn't obvious.

Is there a specific reason that I would flash to BA not AA?
So I would lose root and have to reinstall magisk is that correct?
PS I also have nolimit rom installed.

If mine is the Chinese version which was flashed to global rom, will it be stuck in bootloop again if I update it from OTA again?
It was stuck the first time round and I had to wipe cache and setting.
