Firstly, flash a custom recovery on your phone, then flash a custom rom, and then flash google apps. Because you just wanted google play services, flash the google apps, aroma installer from opengapps website, as this specific version lets you choose what apps you want installed on your phone.

Hi
I have made a battery thread a while ago and also mentioned a few services you could disable (without any hassle) from Google Play Services to lower the wakelocks from it.
One of those was LocationManagerService. I saw that Google Maps worked fine with GPS while other apps did'nt work if it was disabled.
I then tried to move apps like Endomondo and Snapchat to system and made them system apps and suddenly they could access the GPS too.
So well, if anyone want to disable a few services to lower Google Play Services wakelocks you can make your GPS apps to system apps and use the GPS just fine again.
What I did was download a rooted stock ROM that I was already running (cnk2). I dirty flashed it onto my tmobile s5. Surprise! OK Google Everywhere! This confirms for me that Google has deliberately killed this function on their updates, I don't know of course which updates, but I would guess very possibly the search and Google App itself.
At this point I will continue to use the un-updated Google Apps, and report back on whether this adversely affects my use of the Play Store and so on.
Anyone not using Kitkat may be able to locate a ROM that contains Google Apps old enough not to have been damaged by Google. You of course flash that at your own risk. I was already using a stock ROM and flashed the same exact ROM, original version, over my running system.
If anyone would like, I can list whatever version of system app I am using that you think might be of interest in this situation.
Update
Yesterday my phone was getting really hot and the battery use showed that Google Apps was accounting for 16% of battery usage. I did some googling and found others were having this problem. I decided to see if updating Google play services would make a change. I updated:
Google app
Google play services
Google play store
Google text to speech
Google+
Afterward with testing, I still had Google Now Everywhere. My theory now is that an update of some kind that I have "leapfrogged" in this manner may have caused the loss of Google Now Everywhere. I can go into the Google app, select settings, and under voice/"ok google" detection/ I can still retrain the voice model and select "from any screen".
I caught it checking location numerous times throughout each day. How can I disable it? Why is it snooping on my location? I don't even use the Assistant and turned off all notifications in Maps.
dont think you can disable it, if you really want to be scared install a process app from play store, google play services has about 350 odd processes running in the background... thats why I see some guys going for a google free phone, and using apk mirror and F-droid as alternative app stores.
Did you turn off the location trackin in google section in settings?
HD 10 rooted. Is it possible to truly disable Alexa? I have it turned off, yet it is continually using 12-15% of my CPU. I think this is why I have such poor battery life. Thank you.
Nobody?? Every time I restart, this thing starts killing my battery until I do a force stop. Would love to kill it permanently. Did a file search, and there is a bunch of Alexa files. Not sure which one to rename, if that can be safely done.
Can have a Google Assistant
Make sure the Google apps are installed like Google Services Framework, Google Account Manager, Google Play Services, Google Play Store and Google app.
Can uninstall or disable the Alexa app
My solution was to use Titanium Backup to disable Alexa. Battery life vastly improved.
This is showing as a notification for some apps(Shazam for example), gps doesn't work with any app and apps that require gps will crash with "Activity detection usage requires the com.android.gms.permission.ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION permission" in logcat.
If I install Gapps I get spammed with many app notification to get Google play services installed, I've tried micro and mini packages with no difference.
If I update apk using app from apkmirror all of the google apps-even chrome and gboard- crash immediately after launching them.
There is no option to update it trough google play store.
When I start google maps the google play services will crash with "gps location provider requires access_fine_location permission"
How can I get it running again? Does anyone know what is happening with google play services?
I'm running Aospextended rom 8.1 on Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo
