Battery Life on 9.0.6 - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

On 9.0.5 was getting around 8-9hrs SOT now it's down to around 6. Have erased cache in recovery and restarted. I shouldn't have to do a hard reset after every update so I don't know what the issue is. I haven't installed anything else and have the same settings on as I did before the update. I'm unrooted add well.I just curious if anyone else is experiencing a decrease in battery life quality after the 9.0.6 OTA?

I'm experiencing the same thing

Same, checked what is draining the battery but everything seems fine.

Same for me: after update SOT 6.5-7h, before around 9h. No root

Mine was worse on 9.0.6 unlocked bl with magisk.
After that I used the MSM tool just to use it so I can learn.
After the MSM tool full restore battery was life was better.
I was also stock kernel and after the restore I put ElementalX.

That's one of my points though, we shouldn't have to do a full restore every single time when taking an update

Have anyone found solution to this problem? This thread is holding me back from purchase.

9.0.6, drains fast...just wait for update

Honestly, the battery life is still ridiculous, still a no brainier to get this phone, even with this update, but no doubt they'll fix it in the next one, it's just a pain, I'm really wondering if anyone's found a fix, and waiting for the next update is going to be anoying, but patience is a virtue lol

Very true. I'm experiencing worse battery like but I'm still going 6+ hours sot and 30+ hours on a charge. It's like a Moto z play but flagship speed.
My idle drain is amazing still. Drops 2-3% in 8 hours if deep sleep. It's just seems to drain faster while screen is on.

Has this issue been fixed with 9.0.7?

There are no battery drain issues with this device.
If you're expereincing bad battery life, tweak your settings or put your brain to work and figure out why. Stop blaming it on the OS, as it should be common knowledge by now to understand that battery life is completely subjective to the user and their location and usage habits, so it will vary widely from user to user...it is what it is. This device is capable of astounding battery life, period.

I agree.
I have not experienced worse battery on 9.0.6 at all. What I have noticed is my usage has changed over time (honey moon period)
Perhaps your usages /locations have changed?
Switching from WiFi to celullars (especially outdoors when your removing about) make a big difference.

I agree the battery is great.
After being on 9.0.7 since release I feel its slightly better so far.

See that's what I initially thought, but even with the 9.0.7 update, the fact is there is no usage difference at all on my part, no change of location, no change of settings, literally not a single thing different from the day before apart from the cache wipe. I have the exact same app usage and no major apps have been updated. For me personally I don't change my habits at all, and whether I or anyone else use any app 10 min more or less than the day before shouldn't make this big of a difference, especially such a drop. I'm not saying the battery life is bad after the update, don't get me wrong 6-7 hrs of SOT is amazing on any phone, i'm just pointing out that clearly then at this point it does in fact have something to do with a change in the OS right, especially if these minor differences in less then what I would give everyone's 5 most used apps they use daily are causing a 1-2hr drop in average SOT...

Fair point I guess.
I've never gotten 8 hrs SOT, 6 hrs at most and it's always been like that since day 1.

And what if it's an app which got updated and started behaving strangely and sucking battery juice ? I would start with that then use BBS to look for detailed battery usage ...

Sudden drop in battery performance on my Nexus 6P(no rogue 3rd party apps).

Hello everyone!
So I have been having these battery issues since April security patch. the phone gets really warm to the touch even by doing the simplest of things like browsing and watching youtube. Android OS keeps the phone awake 80% of the time and I am only getting 2-3 hours of use throughout the day. Restored the phone to factory settings(fresh start, nothing restored) three days ago and still the same issue. Android OS drains the battery life even though I made sure that only google apps are installed on the phone.
But today things got even weirder. I disabled Google Now and location services as a test and the battery drain and heat issues were gone temporarily. I was getting a great battery performance from morning to afternoon. I check my battery stats and I notice that Google services mysteriously drained 17% of my battery life and that it's been running for 21 days straight? That's impossible since I just did a fresh reset to the phone three days ago. I rebooted the phone and that "Google services" drain changed to WiFi instead?! That's crazy!
I contacted Google store support team and they have been really helpful so far. They offered to replace the phone with a refurbished unit, but I don't think I am ready to give up on this phone just yet.
Thank you!

I hate to recommend this, but sometimes things go out of wack after a SW update, so a hard reset would probably be needed. I would try that (just start from zero) before jumping into a refurbished phone that might have some other kind of issues. Have you tried a hard reset yet? I see that you did a fresh reset. Did you go through the recovery though? Not just the regular UI. I think it's better to clear cache, and every thing through the recovery (custom or stock).

I did it through recovery. I have cleared the cache and rebooted the phone several times the past few days. Nothing seems to help at all.

Wow. Maybe a custom ROM might help? Have you tried that? That's the last thing I would do. Good luck!
Not recommended but I just flashed January vendor and ROM and that has helped my battery life. I. Believe it is the security updates that kill our battery.

Is it a widespread issue? Like I said in my post, I saw the decline ever since I got the April security update. The May patch actually managed to make things worse. There seems to be something hidden in the OS that it's draining the battery and causing the awake issues. I haven't tried rooting the device because I lack the experience to do so. I will probably look into it on these forums, but at this point I have tried everything.
Disabling Google now helped a lot and it exposed some sort of a glitch with the stock battery monitoring app. I am not sure if it's hardware or software, but it's certainly not normal. I am tempted to just replace it, but I am afraid that this issue will just plague the new one from Google. I am really disappointed How Google handles updates on this device. I always thought that stock android is most stable version of android, but the software on my old Xperia Z is actually more stable than this. It never had battery drain issues and standby battery life was always great. The battery life on Nexus 6P is actually worse than the Xperia Z even though that phone is 3 years old.

I've seen a lot of posts over the months with people having the same problem we are. I came from a mid range LG stylo with a snapdragon 610. I would have 8 hours screen on time daily. Its sad that goggle cant get the same out of their own hardware. Also I have seen that the Note 5 and S7 Edge both get better battery life as opposed to our stock phones. For as much as people praise stock and look down on Touchwiz, they are doing something right over there.
But it doesn't affect everyone and that what puzzles me. Only certain phones are hit by these issues, while other people are getting excellent battery life. I have seen plenty of people post screenshots of 6 hours+ of on screen time. I am lucky to get 3 hours. I think Google should really invest in creating a better power management system into Android. Companies like Sony and Samsung built their own and the battery life on their devices always perform predictably relative to what I am seeing on this phone. I have never witnessed The doze feature kick in since I have bought this phone. Sony had stamina mode since 2013 and it actually worked.

Most of those people posting those outrageous number root and do kernel tweaks. I've gotten at most 6 hours SOT on stock without root. You are right our phones do all react differently to certain circumstances. I don't know if it's feasible to you ,but you should try rooting and trying out a few Roms some help others don't. If you aren't into Roms and decide to root try earlier vendors and stock roms and see it those work. I'm not an expert by any means just my suggestions.

Well, the fact that you are having great battery life proves my point. It's either that the quality control of the batteries used on these phones are terrible, or that the software or kernel are corrupted from factory causing these issues. There is no way to fix them by hard reseting the phone so far. I am going to try to flash a stock rom on this device and see what happens. Thanks by the way.
1) Are you rooted? If not, at least do that and install BBS in order to track down what's eating your battery.
2) Probably we'll run into a common problem / bug the last two months.
After unplugging the phone, it seems that the wakelock *backup* runs constantly, does not let phone get into sleep, and runs in the background while using your phone causin battery to drain faster.
3) About battery life. Comparing battery results between two users it has no point, unless you really now his usage pattern. Not only the setup, but which apps of them used most etc.
For example Facebook app is real battery eater. I've seen an hour more SOT without this app.
I can give several examples like this.

Battery life issues

I'm on the T-Mobile variant. My battery was amazing the first few days lasting anywhere from 6.6-7.5 hours of SOT. Now Im avereging 5-6 hours of SOT. A lot of Android OS and Android system drainage. I'm not rooted neither. Anyone else?

Haven't received it yet. I checked yesterday for updates and nothing popped up. Did you get one?
This is what I have so far
I'm rooted so I'm on 10d for now.
I was hoping you had taken it, because that would've explained the battery. Honestly, though, even 5-6 hours seems like a ton. Maybe you installed something new? I'd recommend GSam, but that doesn't work on Nougat without root.
Screen time, depends on what your doing, and what your connection speed is.
Maybe Google featured apps? Also you may be doing things you weren't doing before on the phone.
Its hard to tell, I wouldn't say you have a drain issue based on previous screen time.
Now if you said, I was getting 6.5 before and now only getting 3 hours, than I'd say there's an issue.
Not sure if it applies. But I noticed some greater than usual battery drain right before my external speaker became all distorted. Since then I've noticed a marked decrease in battery especially standby. Hopefully that will change once I send it in and get it fixed.

Only get ~2 hours of on screen time - "Android System" battery drain

I am on the latest 7.0 beta, T-Mobile version, I am getting pretty frustrated. I only get ~2 hours of on screen time. Right now at 30% and Android System has used 1350 mAh and CPU total is close to 5 hours.
Attached some pictures from yesterday and basically the same exact thing - maybe one of the packages listed is killing the battery?
I know there are a lot of posts about this issue but nothing that I've found useful unfortunatlely.
Did you try a factory reset? That help me get good battery life.

Been thinking about doing that, but not sure why it got really bad all of a sudden. I could get 3 to 4 hours before.
I think I'll wait until the official release is out and then do a reset - hopefully it comes out soon.

I am getting pretty fed up. Thought the new updates would make it better but no go for me.
If only you got root, I strongly recommend using Myandroidtools/disable service. Samsung roms sucks pretty bad, I have never ever experienced something like battery drain on other phones. Since I disabled 80+ Google Services and some samsung bloat, android system takes about 2-4% drain after a whole day. I am using Renovate on nougat.
Looks like a lot of you are very unlucky. My battery life is superb! At the end of the day I still have ~35% battery remaining. I recharge every night regardless of how much battery I have left, so it does me just fine

I would strongly advise to stay away from any of those 'fancy' package disablers.
They do no good and often deteriate things. I have on average over 8hours SOT and never used disablers.
Most Samsung apps don't put any drain on the battery. It's things like Facebook etc that hog resources.
Yeah, if only i got Facebook apps installed. I have fully working locations, notifications and other stuff - most of services I disabled are feedbacks, silent loggers and stuff I dont need or use. Only corrupted app is Gmail - which I don't use.
I got sync switched on, lots of calls, auto brightness, voice assistant and usually get 5 hours SOT during my usage which isn't bad at all.
So not sure what did it, but I installed Greenify and also changed from 1080p to 1440p and I get about 3ish hours on screen time. Still terrible but will do for now.
My phone also feels faster after changing resolution back to 1440p. So weird.

I remember Samsung saying it only consumes a couple a percentage points.
This article tested and it's nowhere near 40%. And I use the phone about 15 hours before it gets charged again so it should have a huge impact.

Okay, stop reading useless news and try it by yourself. Phone dont go fully in doze mode with AOD on and keeps light and other sensors on like proximity to put more or less light in the aod screen. You are complaining about **** battery and I am telling you that I have tested how aod can take 40% of battery in one day. You really believe samsung? Come on...

I really don't think you're right as that's not my experience either. I cited the article because usually the tech websites have some experience - my anecdotal data, or yours, doesn't carry much weight.
As posted before, my screen time has increased and keeps going up. Got near 4 hours of on screen time today. Greenify must have killed a process that was putting the CPU on overdrive and which showed up under Android System. I shouldn't have to take the time to find fixes however since Samsung and the Doze feature should be doing this already.
I appreciate your advice, no need to get upset we're just having a discussion...

I don't really see a discussion in the fact that AOD uses a lot of battery if you keep it on all day, it's pretty much guaranteed that AOD is the main culprit. And your own experience with your phone and its settings is worth a lot more than the experiences from some tech website. Everyone's phone/settings is different.

Bad battery life on all phones? A curse?

Hello, so okay I agree the title is a bit too dramatic but I'm veryyy frustrated, so basically I've owned three android smartphones so far:
Samsung galaxy grand prime ve
OnePlus X
OnePlus 5
(a steady increase in specs)
And I have a question: why can I not get reasonable battery performance on any phone? On my oneplus X when I bought it, for the first few months I used to get 2.5 SOT and then months later I started getting barely an hour (45mins). No matter which roms or kernels I flashed, it made no difference. Battery saver on? No difference Greenify on? A small negligible amount saved...
Infuriated by this I finally came to buy a OnePlus 5 which I thought would put an end to this. However here I am, full of my battery saving habits still in me (which I have done so much research on to make sure they don't make it worse, trust me, I could write a battery saving wiki) and with a draining oneplus 5 in my hands. I've tried different roms and different kernels but still the same bad problem : a DRAINING BATTERY... I can get through a day with 3hrs SOT if battery saving mode is turned on but with a normal stock OOS I could never. I don't understand... I've tried BBS and GSam to try and find the source of this and still nothing. So I have resorted to the unofficial RR which comes with Lighting kernel which I have underclocked and use with battery saving mode on (not android's, ex kernel manager's one). So I have finally turned to xda so someone may be able to help me.
Cheers
Ps: I don't believe I am a target of the NSA and I have a special phone that is customized to track me...
I'd be looking at the apps you haveinstalled... Sounds like there's something running in background eating away at your battery life...
Or it's an energy vampire living in your home....
I am getting radically different battery performance with this phone day to day. One day it'll get a solids like 6.5 hours SoT and others I'll get like 4. Various issues it seems. Shouldnt be that hard to get consistent battery life.
Agree with above. Only common denominator here is you / your apps. But, stock+magisk with franco kernel and the app naptime is enough for me to get 5-7h sot out a full battery, but usually it's half full when I go to bed
You've mentioned that you tried many things to resolve this but I'll go ahead and tell you the things I use to make my battery last a little longer (hopefully there is something useful for you)
- Greenify with Magisk Module
- ForceDoze
- Location almost always on battery saving mode
- Force Doze for Google Play Services Magisk Module
- if WiFi is on, data will be off, and if data is on, then WiFi is off
- Bluetooth is always off if nothing is connected to it
- brightness is kept relatively low/halfway at most, the majority of the time
Running unofficial RR with Lightning Kernel v11 (1000hz version)
All this combined gives me roughly 9-9.5 SOT (about 140 apps installed)
If I forgot to mention anything, I'll edit it in here!
I've been very careful with my apps and I can't see what could be causing, I've tried third party Facebook apps instead of the official one for example and there's nothing strange installed.

Cheers
Ps: I don't believe I am a target of the NSA and I have a special phone that is customized to track me...

Try with basic steps. Factory reset then:
1) Have totally stock OP5 - no "battery saving tricks", no apps. Run a bit. What is SOT? If less then average of 5-6 hours - either you have a "curse"/NSA tracking you or defective hardware.
2) Install your "battery saving trick" one by one testing after now and then. Are there any improvements in SOT? If yes, then write your wiki page, share your findings . If not, write your wiki page and tell us what application is a culprit.
3) Rinse and repeat until no more application left to install or you got bored.
I'm getting incredibly poor battery life after the latest update. I haven't let it fully deplete yet so maybe it just needs recalibrated?

There`s alot of sstuff activated on your 1+5. Try turning it off and check the SoT afterwards. Also some people were complaining because their Android-System was consuming way too much energy.

Oops, I meant to follow up on this. Android System and Google Play were causing a lot of wakelocks. I cleared cache in the Google Play and Google Services apps sad now I'm back to my typical 6-7 hours SoT.

Oreo battery feedback

Hello,
I dont really found centralized information about Oreo and feedbacks regarding battery life.
So please, people from Korea and North America, can you provide some feedback about Oreo update, especially about the battery life ?
I heard some negative opinion from this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5hH0TQY6Jg
Before he was at 5-6h SoT, after update 3-4h
Thanks !
It was entirely predictable and expected that there would be no improvement in battery life or performance with Oreo despite all the anticipation.
I have literally NEVER seen a major operating system upgrade actually speed up performance of identical apps on the same device. Sometimes there might be a non-significant decline, but never an improvement.
Each Android upgrade promises some new trick to improve battery life like wakelocks etc, but it's only theoretical and perhaps applies only to brand new hardware.
Otherwise the progressive process of bloating in updated apps and system software use more power and more resources which more than compensate for the supposed improvements in efficiency
I think the few reports that have mentioned improvement are just the random variation that people get, even with Nougat, or even day to day on the same device.
Sometimes I get 1% standby drain per hour and sometimes 3% with no change in use or settings. I have found no consistent way to control this, including trying all of the tips mentioned (except for wiping my phone and starting from scratch).
So far the video reviews that I have seen of Oreo on the G6 are pointedly unexciting and confirm my predictions. As far as I am concerned the only reason to update is for the security patches. I am hesitant to update given that going backwards is difficult on a unrooted device.

maybe some little improvements are made, sure, nothing big to say its a major update, NO!
is almost only a Android version bump and a security patch. PERIOD...
The features this new version introduced is low and people who update the phone dont will see a big change, i already see some videos of update in youtube and didnt see too much difference.
Of course is a good thing LG doing it but isnt night and day,is more like some hours of difference.
Lets see with time to time the Doze mode and power savings features step in and see some change in battery life, i trust LG make something to improve it, again nothing special but for me that already make a difference.

2 remarks :
From my experience, I never saw an android update improve battery life too. But that was a long time ago, with "cheap" phones (expect nexus 4, so disappointed). But recently, a friend bought a Nokia 8, and after the Oreo update, the battery has become so amazing, I was really really suprised and so jealous! So now I still have a little hope ...
However concerning standby drain, for me it's pretty ok. In airplane mode lost 0 or 1% for all night, and with data or wifi, it stays "normal".
You guys have something else going on.like the first post said it depends on day to day and other factors like many apps running in back ground. My phone and battery have 0 issues.on full charge it stays at 100 for about 10min on heavy internet use and then drops about 2percent per hour.I only charge my phone every 3 days.I also found phone much faster after oreo and less studder.I suppose because part of the update is to have less apps running in background.I wouldnt really listen to some users because the change log for oreo is huge.Soooooo many changes under the hood.people should read the change log before giving false facts(and they are false)Always gonna have some dude complaing about something

Did you make some improvements like disabling logs and reducing resolution ? Any reset after oreo ?
I disabled event logs yes.kept screen on large size and no resolution change.Yes I did a factory reset immediately after.I think alot of people are having issues with battery because they dont calibrate it first when new out of the box.As a rule of thumb no matter what electronics i buy i always charge to 100 percent and literally let it drain to 0 percent then full chage again.Do this step twice in a row and i can pretty much guarantee you wont have issues with battery that are out of the ordinary.LOVE MY G6

I just got the upgrade on my g6+ batterie Went bad. .....I started to analyse battery usage and i found that chrome browser was one of the cause ..So i change it for Microsoft edge browser. ..now my battery is draining less. ....So i hope that did the trick. .......and i also cancel all other apps that i did not use
Almost 6h of SoT with heavy gaming. Doesn't sound bad to me. ?View attachment 4508939View attachment 4508940
It's strange that there is so much different experiences between people. This is not reassuring!

There are people that mainly use the phone under a wifi connection, and others that use it under a mobile network, this is just an example to give you an idea of why there is much difference between users
Y kllua but people are complaining regardless of wifi or mobile network. My package includes 6gb of network per month every month i spend 4gb etc...
And lots of people i see have bluetooth, nfc ( if they even thats in or what it even is. ) and then comes some1 like you and says ooo wifi on. What im gonna use at home ? Data ? To consump battery and empty my month data, and what im gonna use on streets, work, free time outside house etc. Mobile fking data. You think wifi is all around us

Well, my G6's battery sucks because at work the phone switches every couple of minutes to all the networks, and so I'm not able to reach home after 9-10 hours with 1-2 of SOT without charging a 20-30% during lunch, besides in weekends where I'm almost everyday under a wifi connection I easily reach 4-5 hours of SOT with gaming in a full day usage.
Also yes, there are many other parameters, like BT, NFC, GPS, Apps ecc...
So finally got Oreo thanks to LG Brigde.
The battery stock app seems really... broken ? Please see screenshots.
The message says : "2 days ago , 1h27min left the conversation."
PS : I made a factory reset after the oreo update.
Mine has actually improved! I'm getting like 30 minutes more (the improvement came after I drained the battery almost completely and charged it back like 3 times and after a factory reset). Not much but I can't complain. I'm actually happy for the improvements in fast charge speed, it's even faster now.
Third day with Oreo now.
Battery life is great, at least as good as before. I have 3.5h of screen on time right now and I'm at 43% battery at the end of a full work day with traveling etc.
And that's with Nova Launcher, Gesture Control [root], Always on Display and Pixel live wallpaper enabled.
Very happy with the G6 at the moment. Of course battery life always depends on your personal use and different phones provide better battery life for different people... G6 seems to work well for me and definitely better than the Huawei P9 I had before.
For people with battery life issues I suggest this: Battery life guide (I keep resolution at max because it messes with AOD and camera)
and also if you don't use google voice assistant try disabling the google app and use the chrome search widget instead. And keep location services on battery saving mode if you don't need GPS all the time.
