My keyboard misfires badly intermittenty. I know it's an old issue but I've never found a solution. The delete key inputs Smileys, the l strikes the spacebar...etc.
It does it with better keyboard also. I'm trying Smart keyboardPro now and it's good so far.
My question is, is this a deep software issue or a uncorrectable hardware issue?
thanks

Turn the screen on and off when this happens and it will be fixxed for a while until the stress builds up again.
I always turn the phone completely off and the keybord stops with the problem
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yeah, as Chopes said, turning the screen off and on works fine for me. Gets really annoying sometimes, I use Swype.
this is a constant problem for me and really the only reason I am considering the Nexus S despite it being a hideously ugly plastic turd.
currently though, the trackball is simply too important for me to lose. here's hoping gingerbread makes it less necessary by making it easier to interact with text via touch
The latest (Korean) radio version supposedly fixes that. I only had the issue a couple times, so I can't confirm.

For me this didn't fix the problems mentioned at all.
While surfing the web I sometimes face them about every 30 minutes and always have to lock/unlock my N1 then to make it working properly again, although I have the newest OTA-update and (Korean) radio fw installed.
Strangely it seems as if these problems would occur less often when holding the screen clean...Don't know if that makes any sense!?
I have an issue where rapidly tapping the delete key selects text... not really sure why the heck that happens.
The only clue I can offer is that it only happens to me when I use one of several wall wart chargers that I have. One of the chargers seems to cause the phone to feel warmer than the others, and once it warms up, the KB goes wild. Removing the battery solves the problem and once plugged back in it doesn't recur till the following night when I plug it back into that particular charger.
Not a big samsung fan.
Is it a dead spot on your phone
I feel for you, this is a well know issue with the low-quality touch sensor panel used on the N1. The best evidence for this is seen with any application that is very touch dependent (like virtual keyboards). If you download any of the multi-touch testing apps in the Market and compare the results with any newer phone, the results are pretty sad. The Galaxy S for example can register 5 individual points at once, the G2/MyTouch 4G can see 4.
The charging/heating/screen going crazy problem is also common place - I run into it at least once a day.
I still love my Nexus, but this kind of craziness makes me think twice about HTC's decisions on parts.
Yes this definitely a major defect for a lot of n1's. I've done numerous swaps behind this issue, and every single one of them has suffered from this defect. As far as features are concerned, the n1 is the best I've had, but because HTC chose not to address the issue, I've decided not to purchase anything manufactured by HTC. Maybe if i only paid a couple hundred for this phone, i wouldnt be as disgruntled, but $600.00 is a lot for a phone with a defective touch panel. I'm so glad Samsung and others are providing better options out there. HTC will not get my money anymore.
Hey All-
I searched for this with the assumption that with all the N7 screen issues there would be others experiencing this but I was not able to find much of any help.
----
My N7 is registering touches without me making contact with the screen. It is always in the same location. When the keyboard is up, it is where the letter 'D' is located. If I pass my finger directly overhead, or often times, even near to, the 'D' button, the tablet registers it as a touch. I can make the tablet register a touch with my finger as far as 1/4'' away from the screen surface. As you may imagine, this makes typing near impossible. As I pass over the letter 'D' to access other letters, it registers 'D' everytime.
I have tried other keyboards and the problem persists. It isn't necessarily over the same letter (due to differing keyboard layouts) but it is always in the same location on the screen.
I popped the back cover off and tightened/loosened screws to no avail. Turning the screen off and then back on does not help as it seems to do with some of the other screen issues that others are experiencing. The one thing I have found to strangely help is pushing on the screen in the affected location with extremely firm pressure; in essence squishing the s*** out of it. When I do this, the screen will behave better (it will still ghost touch in the area but my finger must be very close to the screen) for a period of time before reverting to misbehavior.
--
Has anyone else experienced something of this sort? I am currently running stock/rooted/unlocked; It seems to be a hardware issue so I don't think another ROM will help though I will try the CM10 nightlies when they boot properly. I'm ready to just bring it back for a new one but I know the Wal-Mart I bought it at is out of stock.
Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you.
Im having the same issue mine is in random places, usually top left corner but when im texting it starts typing random letters, I've been looking
for a solution or someone with the same issue you are the first and only that i have found. I am also having the dead spot issues, they tend to alternate.

Nexus 7 phantom taps
I'm having similar problems with my Nexus 7 bought in November. Worked fine for a while, now I'm getting phantom taps making typing a real pain and page scrolling can be frustrating when it suddenly scrolls to the top of the page! Anyone know if this is a warranty fix?
I had this happen one time. It freaked me out.

OP and others - have you look at the video here - post #1254 - look familiar to you at all - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770919&page=126
A # of us had been freaked out, wondering if our secured WPA2 network has been breached and remotely controlled ...
If your device is brand new, return it & get it exchanged, or get it fixed under warranty - it's hardware related. The 16GB WiFi only model that I got from local Staples store had that problem that got worst - the replacement & upgraded 32GB unit has been flawless thus far - running stock but rooted 4.1.2 rom. I was within the 14 days/holiday time frame for exchange/return w/o stocking fees, luckily & did not have to wait for it to be repaired under warranty.
Upgrading to 4.2 firmware and/or custom Rom & kernel do not help, YMMV - of course ...
BTW, local Staples tech support counter manager said up to 20% of the N7 are getting returned/exchanged for various issues. Wow !!
After 4.2.2 my nexus7 makes phanton clicks too
Similar with this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkh3W_ITwEw
I turn off screen and turn on and stop... The times in times i get it
Have solution?
I had to take my screen protector off after the update it was pressing places on the screen didn't happen until 4.2.2 update

Hey guys, I just picked up my Tegra Note and I'm enjoying it, but in testing out the potential and limitations of the DirectStylus, I came across a problem and I want to find out if it's just my problem, or if it's reproducible with all Tegra Notes with the latest system updates.
Basically, I'm using the stylus, and stylus only mode is activated. This works pretty well and ignores most/all inputs from anything except the tip of the stylus.
However, I have noticed that if I slide my finger onto the screen from the outer edge/bevel, it will often (nearly 100% of the time) register this as a touch. For an example, if I tap the home button with my finger nothing happens, however if I drag my finger from just below the screen onto the home button, it will press. Likewise I cannot scroll through home screens by normally swiping my finger, but if I swipe from off screen on the left or right, it will register. Bringing down the notification area with a finger swipe, etc, all work as well when naturally this should only be possible with the stylus.
The main problem with this is when writing/drawing with my hand resting on the edge of the device. If my palm is entirely off the screen it is fine. If my palm is entirely on the screen then stylus only works, too. However, if in the process of writing my hand slides from the side onto the screen, suddenly the stylus looses focus and I'm drawing lines with my palm.
I hope I have explained this issue correctly, and I wondered if this was a known problem? If there are any solutions? Have I messed up and set an option somewhere I shouldn't have? Should I get it replaced? Sorry for all the questions!
Oh and it's not rooted or anything. Just stock, updated to the latest system version through the system updates.
Thanks, hope you can help!
I get a similar issue at the bottom left of the screen sometimes. It only seems to effect the bottom left but in both orientations so that rules out a hardware issue. Doing a quick lock and unlock seems to fix it for me and it functions fine until next time I turn on stylus mode. Seems hit and miss with no real way to replicate it.
It didn't seem to do it before ota 2.3 so I predict a hotfix for the issue. Its a minor issue, the battery life on 4.4.2 isn't however, 4-5hrs with lite use is pretty rubbish. I suspect that's an issue with the power saving features (I think it's stuck on Max performance all the time).
Would be nice if they fix the SD write issue but Google dictate that I think.
Mine was certainly a lot worse than that - persistent on all four edges of the screen and there is no way to stop it. 60-80% of the time it was manageable, but consistently reproducible, other times it was far worse and could only manage dots and dashes when I tried to write anything while resting my palm on the screen. It also developed a 'blind spot' problem I've noticed reported on a couple of forums - a spot where the stlus simply refused to draw - so I grew more concerned that I had a problem with the actual hardware. So, I took it into the store I bought it from, and they're going to replace it for me.
Hopefully I won't have a problem with the replacement one, because I absolutely love the tablet!
I've had similar problems... just remember, all of the stylus functionality is governed by software; the screen on this is simply a regular capacitive screen that's also capable of detecting the size and shape of what's touching it, and the rest is calculated by software. It's a neat idea, but in practice it hasn't held up as well as Nvidia would've liked us to believe. Now that I've had a Galaxy Note 2 for a couple months, I have to say that the active stylus experience blows the TN7 away, but then again it's a much more expensive technology to implement. I almost always used a pencil with my TN7 while it was my day-to-day work buddy since I found the stylus to be too sticky and hard to write with... I also found several of the issues I was having weren't as bad while using a pencil, so maybe you could give that a try. Also, remember that if the screen is dirty that it will affect the stylus's performance as the screen is so sensitive that even a little moisture could register as a touch on the screen.
I received my replacement tablet today, and it is a lot better than the one I previously had. While the problem is still there, it is far, FAR better than before. Now it seems to be a minor nuisance, rather than a consistently reproducible problem. On top of that it has a much more vibrant screen - less yellow and washed out - and no 'dead zones' when trying to write with the stylus. So while I am certain software has an impact on performance, there must have been something weird going on inside the hardware of my previous device, too.
Considering the price, the fact that others have had similar issues, and how much I like about everything else - I'm very happy with my new TN7 now!
Have same problem .... When i swipe from left or right side of the screen it detects stylus nd do all the things.... Dont knw wat to do amazon is not replacing too the tablet..!
Same problem, I don't usually mind it other when I'm using an app like sketchbook pro, it becomes really annoying.

I have a UK Advent Vega Tetra Note 7 (the Currys /PC World version) with a slide cover. Lately the touchscreen has been exhibiting a few intermittent problems. The most annoying is that when I hit a soft key or type a letter, the screen registers multiple touches. This is extremely frustrating when I hit the back button, only to close the entire application.
The pinch and zoom sometimes plays up to. I thought that might be related to the already-identified issue over the black area to the sides of the screen being touch sensitive when they really should not be. It means that your palm often inadvertently acts as a second finger when scrolling, and zooms the screen. However the problem seems deeper, as it can happen even when being careful not to touch the bezel. And if you hold the black area off to the side of the screen, it brings up a menu.
When browsing, occasionally the touch and hold works a bit randomly, for example, when you hold a link that you want to bring up in a new tab.
I have factory reset the tablet and the problem disappears, only to reappear later. And it isn't constant either - it comes and goes.
I wonder if the issue has something to do with the magnetic slide case? Or do users without the case also experience problems? It really is a pity, as this is a great tablet otherwise.
I've had issues similar. After going back to 4.3 they seemed to go away (battery life was better too). Now back on 4.4.2 and OTA 2.3 the problems are there again. It must be a software issue, hopefully it'll be fixed along with the battery life issues.
Roll on 4.5 and let's hope nvidia give us it.
downgrade?

How did you downgrade? Is it just a case of a factory reset, then declining any upgrades?
I do hope Nvidia are aware of this problem. It really takes the shine of a good tablet.

Look here for an Advent guide to reflashing the 4.3 ROM:
http://www.adventcomputers.co.uk/product-download-select/296
You can ignore the updates afterwards. By no means though is 4.3 perfect, there is problems with the GPS and various other things that have been fixed in the latest versions.
Personally I found the latest to be best overall - Minus the battery life issues and some minor stylus/touchscreen issues.
Thank you BuToNz. I developed touchscreen problems when using the stylus after updating to 4.4.2, sensitivity was lost in an area the size of a large coin, if it registered anything in this zone it was just a messed up line. I downgraded as per the link details to 4.3 and the touchscreen with stylus is fine again.. Left feedback with Nvidia, hopefully they can repair this.

tegra note touch faulty
me 2 facing the same problem pls help..
There is a known issue that has existed since the tablet was launched where sometimes if you wake the screen by opening the cover, the touchscreen can become erratic or unresponsive. If you do a quick sleep/wake with the power button, it usually fixes it. Why Nvidia hasn't been able to fix this after a year is baffling and part of why I held off on getting a Shield Tab (among other reasons).

This has been consistent with mine and I can live with it, however recently randomly after a day or two of use, if I turn off the tab with the power button and have it charging, when I go to use it again after a random time, I get a completely unresponsive touchscreen after powering it back up with the button. No response from the screen at all. Buttons work fine, and a hard power down fixes the issue just fine, but no amount of play with either the power button or screen cover or even stylus fixes the non responsive screen. Very strange.
Still love every bit of this tab, but do hope for a Android 5.0 update soon for both it and my Shield Portable.
Ok, so I have a brand new Moto X Style (XT1572) bought in the UK.
After the initial 10 days when everything was working fine, the touchscreen has began showing some really irritating erratic behavior:
When I swipe, the screen interprets it as a touch
Single touch is sometimes doubled (for example, with the back navigation button)
Pulling down the notification bar gets it half way, then the phone thinks I have removed my finger so pulls it back up, even though my finger is still on the screen
The phone has never been dropped, no water splashed on it, no nasty handling, I am always extremely careful with all my devices. And the phone is not rooted or altered in any way.
So far I have tried the following, but none solved the issue:
Forced rebooted the device.
Reset to factory settings.
Re-reset factory settings and not install anything for 2 days except Twitter and Chrome.
Changed 3 different launchers besides stock.
Changed apps with alternatives.
Reset apps, reinstalled apps.
Removed screen protector and repeat previous steps.
Tried both with the fast charger connected and not connected. With factory provided cable.
Tried both with a normal charger connected and not connected. With factory provided cable.
The problem appears at random times/apps, anywhere there's scrolling involved: Chrome and Twitter are the most obvious. I have never unwillingly clicked on so many ads in the past as I have since this problem started. Worst part is that the phone decides for me if I want to touch or long touch or scroll, so it opens pages/tweets/apps I don't want to open. All at random. And then, after a while, it's fine. And then it starts again.
As you understand, the phone is unusable during the times it behaves erratically.
Not a happy first-time-Motorola customer here. Any ideas anyone?
I've made a post about weird screen issues where randomly it registers a swipe as a touch, and if you hold down on that touch, the screen goes insane and freaks out.. but the second I lift my finger up and put it down again it's fine... therefore it wsnt much of an issue for me.
Sent from my Moto X Pure Edition
I've been seeing weird stuff too. Force closing of games that play perfect on my original Moto X too...?
I think this is a result of the slim bezels. I noticed that most of the problems I have is when the skin from a finger holding the phone seems to be too close to the screen and it's registering it as a contact. Of course, this causes it not to interpret the contact you're intentionally making correctly.
My solution theory: use the included bumper or a case and see if you still have the problem. The case/bumper should help prevent unintended contact.
still have the problem with the case. it's weird Phantom touches that happen. I feel like it might be software, but idk.
Sent from my Moto X Pure Edition
Just coming back to say that the problem was not software related.
It was THE BLOODY CASE!!!
Can't believe it, can you?
It was an i-Blason Halo Series Hybrid Clear Case / Cover with TPU Bumper.
The edge of the case was registering touches on the screen!!!
Now in search of a new case.
BTW, I'd like to thank @jayochs and @AtLemacks for the great hint.
Still can't believe it...
weird. I have a regular TPU and it still does it. does it even without a case at all.

I have the same issue and a TPU case as well. I've found that locking and unlocking the device helps temporarily, but the issue soon returns. Obviously, this is not ideal... It's driving me insane.
Same issue here. Tried downgrading to 5.1.1 but the issue persists. Now I am going to try custom firmware. I Live abroad so I can not receive replacement
For all with the same issue, try operating your phone without a protection case for a few days. I found out this was the reason for the erratic behaviour.
I have been having this issue as well. It happens a lot when I am swiping text, or scrolling. When scrolling, my touch is sometimes registered as a 'click.' While swipe typing, it is as though my finger is removed then replaced, like the touchscreen input is skipping.
I will try removing the case, although this happens also when I am not holding it (phone on table). I think it might be possible that I need to push harder on the glass protector, except that the OP tried not using it altogether.
I found this thread which mentions adding some tape to the touch screen connectors.
Several people claim it solved their problem. I tried it without any success, but maybe it will help someone else.
