This enables both Alexa and Google Assistant at the same time, while replacing the FireLauncher permanently with NovaLauncher and retaining Show Mode
Notes
Alexa can be enabled, the fire launcher disabled while keeping Show Mode active, and with a little bit of fiddling, Google Assistant works as well - both from the Show Mode screen.
The first "OK Google" dismisses the Show Mode screen and shows Assistant, the second one uses the assistant - completely hands-free.
All that fully rooted on 5.3.6.4 (5.6.0.3).
Tutorials to follow
Root: retyre's method
Disable FireLauncher, enable NovaLauncher, reboot
Install Google Play Services *without* disabling alexa (ommit last ADB command/keep `alexa_enabled=1`)
For HD10 use this Google Play Services APKhttps://www.apkmirror.com/apk/googl...s-11-5-09-240-164803921-android-apk-download/
Use Google App 8.33.6.21 beta (disable updates in Google Play) after installing the Google Play Services, reboot
Initial setup/Troubleshooting
Resetting the Google App (when OK Google stopped working or activating Voice Match doesn't work), or for first run
Stop the Google App forcefully then remove its data
Toggle NovaLauncher in accessibility settings off and on again
Reboot
Open the Google App and get it to recognize "OK Google". If it doesn't: set all languages in its settings to English (US) and/or reboot and/or forcefully end the app and retry and/or re-toggle accessibility settings and/or set the secure settings again
Enable Voice Match. If it times out with an error, toggle primary languages in the Google App settings, make sure English (US) is always primary; try adding your main language as secondary; otherwise reboot
Start Google Assistant and follow the setup
Profit
Get the OK Google beep back
Most of this is trial and error, I haven't been able to pinpoint after which point "OK Google" works again once it stopped, if it stops. Using Google App 8.33.6.21 beta I have yet to see it stop working.
Tested on
Fire HD 10 (2017) 5.3.6.4 (5.6.0.3)
Please test this on other versions/tablets and report!
Updates
19/11/24 #1:
update Google App recommendation to 8.33.6.21 beta
add Google App reset instructions
update instructions
1 - I am surprised no one else has jumped on this to try it out and give more test results.
2 - How much time to lose ability/ how often the RESET?
3 - Process of RESET?
4 - I honestly would not mind switching between, ideally via Voice but if both can work together - brilliant.
I've made this into a semi-guide with a little bit more detail and specific APK versions.

I'm using the HD 10 in show dock mode (and this tutorial is aimed at that use). If Alexa activated for you before, when screen was off and the device not charging, it should do the same after the mod. As for Google: not sure, please try it yourself.
This method still working with specified "Older Versions" on HD 10. Can anyone test it on an HD 8 Please?

How does this Google Interpreter mode play out on Amazon tablets?
Are you able to utilize both Alexa and Google Assistant to launch all apps or are you relegated to having to use Alexa to launch those apps installed via the Amazon App Store and Google Assistant to launch those apps installed via Google Play Store?

I've rooted my J320A, installed the beta versions of Google Play Services and the Google App, cleared all storage for each app and I'm still not seeing Google Assistant. Is anyone else having this problem?

Also we could try posting to https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/websearch/RC1pw4QhcfE/GCZx2ZbMBgAJ with answers to Ron's and hopefully prompt a better response.
Maybe im confused, but isnt the screenshot google assistant?
Didnt do anything, just updated stock thru playstore.
Guess what I posted above isn't assistant, just Google on tap...I've tried a lot to get this working
The non rooted methods out there can get to assistant in a round about way (launching some settings menu), but after assistant is activated I still could not launch it.
Using current versions of Google app the only way I could access assistant is thru rooted terminal, using the following command
Code:
am start -n "com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/com.google.android.apps.gsa.staticplugins.opa.OpaActivity"
But typing that is a half and I couldn't come up with a practical way of using (I plan to learn tasker tho, that might help)
Only decent way I can launch it is by using an old version, 6.11.21.21 works. And installing the xposed module assistant enabler (n-ify's experimental settings has this feature too)
You must also disable auto update in your play store.
Using old versions has it's drawbacks. For instance Pixel launcher doesn't get read your weather card, so no weather widget. Who knows what else.
[EDIT]
I was able to update and it still work, it didn't last tho... Needs more testing

Nah havent really messed with tasker yet.
Only really have time to play on the weekends, and worked on another project last weekend (that alt root thing). Now with the holliday im not sure what ill have time for...i did work out the highest version assistant enabler works for us tho (6.13.25.21 works)
Ill be sure to report any updates
Think this is the best i can do with tasker using the command above (and updated google app)
Install tasker and autovoice
In tasker click the profile tab and import the two attached profiles
In autovoice goto google now
Choose not enabled
Turn on both autovoice and tasker accessibility options
Back out then check enable and uncheck voice only
Now goto advanced and check always cancel
And thats it
Now when you say 'ok google' (or use voice search) voice search will popup and close and google assistant will launch...holding the home button will bring up on tap, auto close and launch assistant.
It will probably fail the first time, but itll work afterwards.
Also the first time you open the google app itll activate assistant, but again, itll work afterwards.
Enjoy
-D
Btw im still looking for another method, i dont like the delay
I had a little luck using Google Assistant Launcher, which seems to launch the same intent you suggested and may be easier than messing around with tasker.
Here's what I've done:
De-enroll from the Google App beta, uninstall the beta, and then install the latest (non-beta) Google app.
Then run the Google Assistant Launcher and click on the "My Stuff" tab, create a new reminder and train the voice model
Go to settings / apps / defaults and change the default assistant to Google Assistant Launcher
If the Assistant Launcher doesn't launch the Assistant, clear storage for the Google app and Google Play services and try again

So, I have Tasker and AutoVoice. I am running your (@DamienMc) "pixel experience" ROM for J320A with root and Xposed. When I try to enable AutoVoice's accessibility setting, it tells me "Universal switch does not support the current system language. The text to speak language will be set to English (United States), but this might cause unexpected behavior." I click Turn On, and then it says unfortunately, settings has stopped. This happens every time I try to enable any accessibility setting for any app. So please consider this in an update to your ROM.

I got Google Assistant working by following the instructions from the YouTube video in this thread's post #4. All was fine for a while and then GA no longer worked sometime after I applied one of the OTA's. I can't say that was the cause but the timing was coincidental. GA seemed to react but not fully engage. I tried a lot of things including re-training the "OK Google" but nothing worked.
Finally I followed the part of post #4's cache clearing of Google and Google services apps cache (remember there is more than one cache) and then went through the Google Assistant set up as if it had never been working. That fixed my issues and has been working ever since. I'll see if the same problems arise after the next OTA. So I'd trying clearing the cache of those two apps EXACTLY as shown in the video.
Edit: I've applied OTA for v4.5.5 and have not had any Google Assistant issue

You have to clear the data cache for play services as well.
For those that got Google Assistant working are you having any issues such as those described below?
Trusted voice which enables Google Assistant from the lock screen does not work despite the proper settings in place
Creating a Google Assistant shortcut not works
IFTTT doesn't seem to work as advertised (I'm still working on this one)
I've had no end of small issues trying to customize Google Assistant but the main built in functions (e.g. weather, search, Spotify commands, open app) work perfectly.
Just curious about other people's experience. It leaves me feeling Google Assistant is just a beta program/work-in-progress on a phone or a tease to get you to buy a Google Home despite always having a much more capable device in the palm of your hand (your phone). I don't want an ugly Google Home "air freshener" when I already have an Android SD835/8GB phone.

Google Assistant works with the screen off as long as the OP5 is NOT locked. Working while locked is supposed to work only when Trusted Voice is turned on. Unfortunately I have turned on trusted voice but Google Assistant will not initiate (work) when the OP5 is locked.
OK Google has a different interactive screen than Google Assistant. The OP5 OOS comes with OK Google but you need to manually activate Google Assistant before experiencing its advanced AI features. You would also see new Google Assistant specific settings at the top of the Google app->Settings->Google Assistant->(Settings, What can you do?).
One of the early posts in this thread has the link to manually activate Google Assistant.
Yeah, I have Google Assistant but I am pretty let down by the fact it doesn't work with the screen off and locked. I have heard it's a license that has to be paid to googs
Mine worked with no fuss. What doesn't work is the trusted voice and waking the phone up when the screen is off. That one I can't figure out

I've found a hacky workaround for this issue by using a combination of apps. First off I only use this method when I'm connected to the charger which is no different than the Trusted Voice limitations. Second my lock screen is only enabled when I'm not on a charger.
Use the Caffeine app to block the automatic lock screen. Check settings "Autoactive on USB", "Autoactive on USB type/AC charger", "Enable caffeine at boot".
Buy and install the app Screen Off (No Lock). I couldn't find a free app that turned off the screen but did not also lock it.
Then use the Google Assistant command "OK Google open screen off" to invoke turning the screen off but still having Google Assistant listening for my next command. I also use Tasker and it's Voice Assist plugin connection to Google Assistant so added the "start Screen off" as the last task in my Voice Assist profiles.

For the most part Google Assistant works for me but important features either lack reliability or don't work at all.
Google Assistant macros don't work at all despite built in GA commands working (e.g. play on Spotify)
I can't seem to make a IFTTT connection work
The connection between GA and Tasker's VoiceAssist is unreliable. Too often GA intercepts a regular Tasker Event phrase and displays a google search screen but the Tasker event for the phrase does not trigger. This despite the Tasker VoiceAssist toast displaying the correct event phrase. I'll try it a second time and this time it'll work despite GA recognizing the exact same phrase (not a variation).
I've been able to create some cool home theater (Harmony Hub) automation profiles but the unreliability has me wondering if I'm wasting my time. I really like the whole Google Assistant and the Tasker extension but am not prepared to continue developing things unless I can increase the overall stability.
It may just be my OP5 which is running OOS 4.5.5, rooted with SuperSU with Viper4Android installed. Other than that I've not altered the stock OOS experience. I've not even removed any bloat ware.
Does anyone have the Google Assistant macros and/or IFTTT working on their OnePlus 5?
I've previously posted that Google Assistant's macros didn't work for me but I received an update to the Google app v7.7.14.21.arm64 (Beta) and Google Assistant's macros are suddenly working. Even macros I'd previous entered but had never worked. I also added new ones and they also worked.
What stopped working was Tasker receiving the OK Google spoken commands, (no VoiceAssist toasts). I need to explore further as the newly functioning macros may be a far better way to integrate with Tasker. I'll likely retry the recommended Google Assistant/IFTTT/Tasker integration which also didn't work prior to this latest update.
It's working perfectly
Just did as it was said on the video. Everything works perfectly, including the "OK Google" detection while the screen is off. No problems whatsoever.
To Note: Even i changed the language back to English(UK) after all was setup, and works like a charm. :good:
Cross post. This works on the Fire HD 8. I hope it works on the 7 too!!! Should work on any device where the provider or manufacturer blocks Google Assistant. For the Fire 7, after you install the play store, you'll need this version of the Google app apk https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1_5-oGDtl8vn4Hu68ch3AOvuB9IVEh0-5

you dont even need to wait for assisstant to come to 5.0, you can just downgrade your google app to 7.3 so you have the your stuff tab then make a reminder to teach her your voice to enable her voice recognition.

Last time I tried that, it didn't work.
This guide now enables the full google assistant.
Strangely, It seems the Fire 7 on 5.3.1 is unaffected. Can't get full assistant on it, but you get full Google assistant on the HD 8 with 5.4.0.0 and on the HD 10 with 5.6.0.1.

Also Some of you might have noticed OK Google may have stopped working after updating your Google app. It is possible though I haven't been able to say for sure, that updating the Google app at one point may have changed something inside secure settings which causes some of the assistant functionality to stop. if this is happened to you and OK Google has stopped working, go back to the OP at the link provided at the end of this post and make sure the secure settings settings are correct. When updating a Google app on another device one of the lines was deleted specifically the 'assistant' line on my HD 10 and the voice interaction line on another device. any one of these lines being removed from secure settings will cause a assistant to lose some of its functionality. make sure when updating your Google app that you're still in beta and that those three lines do not get removed or changed. https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/guide-enable-google-assistant-ok-google-t3740145

I figured it out. Turn on Nova in accessibility options. Then say ok google.
I followed your directions and OK Google now works. I also hear the beep, but it still will not respond through a voice telling me what the weather is, or who won the ballgame. It just displays the information on the search app. Again no voice telling me if it's going to rain, or who won last night's game, Etc. I greatly appreciate you looking into this. So do you think it's still a glitch? I really like to hear the voice telling me stuff, I'm too lazy to read the info, LOL.

Tap Google app > three lines bottom right > settings > voice. Make sure speech output is on. Also make sure you have offline speech downloaded. From there tap settings under assistant at the top > tablet and make sure thats all set.
Speech output is on, offline speech is downloaded in US English, I turned on Nova and accessibility settings, and it definitely turns on and beeps when I say OK Google but I still do not get a voice response when I ask any question. The Google app isn't your default Assist app. I'm getting that are on the Google Voice match settings. I have already deleted Alexa completely from the phone. Using ES File Explorer Pro, with root. I have also enabled Google through ADB and disabled Alexa through ADB.

Thanks Dragonfire, started with a brand new Kindle from scratch. I accidentally bricked my old one. Long story short I started with a new Kindle HD 10, rooted, installed all the Google apps, followed all of the directions from the guide... I disabled Alexa as the guide says, and I was able to do the voice match and everything. Google does not speak the answers. I only get the famous Google beep. And that's it. The sweet lady Google Voice stays silent.

Thanks Dragonfire, started with a brand new Kindle from scratch. I accidentally bricked my old one. Sorry I can't help more. I've not had this issue aside from the sound issue i had mentioned earlier, which was fixed by activating nova in accessibility.
Is there a way to get Google apps (voice, gchat, gmail, etc) to have working notifications on the 2019 HD 10? I have searched around and see others with the problem, but I did not see any solutions. I installed Google Account Manager v7.1.2, Google Services Framework v9-4832352, Google Play services 20.15.15, and Google Play Store 19.8.15 after a factory reset. Notifications will not work. With Voice, I can have the app open with the screen on and it will not notify or display a new message until it is "refreshed" (leaving the current conversation and going back to the list, etc will then show the new message). Thanks for any help.

Could you explain further? I did disable battery optimization for each Google app that I installed (including the 4 to get Google apps on the tablet). It did not seem to make a difference. Even with the app open and screen on, I cannot get it to make a notification sound.
I have the same problem, no ring or notifications. No battery optimization find and turned on all the notifications on every setting i can find, but still not working. Any other ideas? Thanks!

You can use Activity Launcher:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.szalkowski.activitylauncher
Open Activity Launcher -> scroll down for Settings -> select Battery
Press the vertical 3 dots and select Battery optimization -> Google -> select Not Optimized
If Google notifications didn't work, your Fire HD 10 is terrible. Migrate your valuable files to a new Android device and turn your terrible Fire HD 10 into Android app debugger, digital clock, photo frame, Echo Show (Alexa), or MIDI device.
Yes! Agree! Amazon Fire HD 10 is no good!!!! Since i cannot return it now, i try to make it work. Why didn't Amazon just use the latest Android? Fire OS is so primitive and full of bugs. I tried everything i could find online, turned off battery saver and turned on notifications for all apps, but still does not work right. Fire OS is so stupid!!!! I had to go through each app because i could not find a way to do it easier, very frustrating!!!! Now i am getting some notifications, but hours or even a day later!!!!! They must work for some people. Please share how you make them work. Thank you very much!
as it is, Fire HD10 2019 will not show notifications from Google services. u can installl the apk files and get Play Store up n running. but Fire OS is missing other android framework so notification will not work consistently.
there is no bootloader unlock for HD10 2019 right now. IF that is unlocked in the future AND a custom ROM like Lineage is ported in, then chance of notification working will be much higher.
Amazon sells its Fire tablets mostly for consumption of its digital content. dats why the HD10 does not even have Play Store. getting anything beyond that to run is a bonus. u can use the tablet as-is or get a full android tab: walmart has a few around the same price range. good luck!
