Hello. I have a brand new V20 910, unrooted and stock.
I've noticed that the physical buttons on wired handsets do not work even though the notification bar correctly distinguishes between just phones and a handsfree headset.
I've tested two LG original (the one that came with the phone and another one that came with an LG G3). Audio comes correctly from the phone drivers and I configured OK Google to listen to the wired microphone and it also works correctly. I mostly use the buttons for Poweramp (set to Respond to Buttons, as usual) which worked perfectly with my Cloudy LG G3
I downloaded the Headset Button Controller, set it into debug mode and I get no debug messages from neither of the three controls. And also tried switching the HiFi DAC but nothing has worked.
Can someone please suggest what I should try or do? I am no stranger to phone disassembly, but I want to avoid it if possible.
Thanks in advance.
Headset buttons can be pretty hit and miss.
I'm using a LG V20 H990DS Oreo update with Xiaomi hybrid dual driver earbuds and the buttons work fine (as they did with Nougat). Android is pretty fractured and the manufacturers (earbuds) don't all follow the specs leaving a lot to be desired. I also have found good luck with Beyerdynamic but YMMV as you have a different model number of V20 from me.
I use Poweramp, MX Player, USB Player and Vanced YouTube app with no issues.
I'd go to a store and do some in store demo of different brands to see if they work with your phone before I'd tear open the phone. Good Luck.

Wow. This is very sad to read. I never would've expected this from the V20, being the audio flaghship phone it is.
Thanks for the input.
Well. I cleaned the jack, and of course it was... well, clean.
And then I decided to disassemble the phone to visually and physically inspect the jack and it does have the 4 contact points (ground, mic, left, right) as usual, so I'm still baffled. If the contact points were dirty or faulty, the notificacion bar would not switch correctly between phones and headset.
I ordered a new headphone jack from eBay and I will inspect it to see if I can push the contact points further to provide better connection and then replace it.

You have to activate the sound when you press the button in the poweramp settings, i had the same problem 3 days ago and that fixed it for me

Hi, and thanks for your input. That Poweramp option I've always had active, since the days of my Galaxy S2.
I'm guessing that it's got to do with the physical contact inside the jack. I've noticed that the mic from several handsfree I've tested does not work either.

As title says, it used to work properly with both left and right headphones working properly, however now only the right earpiece outputs sound no matter what I try, played music, games, video and all have the same problems.
Could have been something I did with the phone, could have accidentally made it output in the right earphone only. if so, how do I fix it...
Tried other pairs of earphones and all experience the same problems too, the contact should be working as when i insert a earphone, i can hear the electrical contacts being made on the earphone
You can isolate instantly whether it's software or hardware by just reinstalling the firmware.. Then you'll know for sure (when I worked at a Apple reseller, restoring iPod's was the first action I told everyone to take if they didn't know what was wrong)
But I have yet to have seen any balance controls.
Are you using the Samsung earphones that were supplied with the phone? Samsung, and Nokia, use a different configuration to most phones as far as the four-pin socket is concerned, so if you are using any other make, the chances are that only one channel is connected. Also make sure you are using earphones with a FOUR pin plug, not the standard three pin supplied with mp3 players.

Standard stereo mini-jack is a universal wiring standard, i.e. tip and two barrel contacts for ground and left/right channels. The fourth barrel contact is usually used for composite video.
If anyone decided to wire their socket differently then you'd never get any earplugs/headphones to work without an adaptor and it would be a totally stupid thing to do.
To the original poster, check whether you've adjusted balance settings to only one side. Not sure how you do that since haven't got mine yet.
Using stock headphones, have not changed any settings to output in right earphones only.will try re flashing when I can
This may sound a bit dumb but you checked you actually properly pressed the jack into the socket? Just asking because the first time I listened to something on my SGS I had the same problem just to notice that the socket was actually tight enough so that the jack wasn't completely in, once I pressed it the missing 1-2mm in the whole thing changed

though that this could have been the problem as well, pushed it all the way in but stop no luck.
Reflashed firmware, still have the problem.... This is already the second problem with my phone, if you have been frequenting this forums you would know that i have also posted a problem with my camera.
So gotta bring down to Samsung svc centre again?

Yes I'd assume if you describe to them that some key functions don't work properly they should give you a new one, for instance the audio output isn't only for listening to music but also works as the handsfree socket so it is rather vital. You just got a bad copy so go and ask them

Just went down to Samsung svc centre today and described my problems, asked for a replacement and all they replied was "sorry sir, we do not do 1 to 1 exchanges"... Damn was really hoping to get a new phone, anyway now its with them and hope they don't screw anything up with it.
Sound Problem
You solved the problem? I have the same problem sounds to me more slowly in the left side of the headphone. I using Dark Knight 3.
I had such a problem with my old k800i mobile. After buying new earphones, the problem was solved.
Sound Problem
I tried, but no results
the sgs ( GT-I9000 ) uses a different type of wiring for the headphones, is the same nokia uses for the N95, the sgs2 headset wont work! the galaxy tabs headsets wont work, the iphone/ipod headsets wont work!!!!! why??? because the wiring is different!! why?? ask samsung!
ok, are you using the same headset? if yes, try to use them in someone else sgs (gt-i9000) if they work then it's your phone, if they don't ask if you can use his headset in yours, if they work then is your headset, just get a new one keeping in mind what i just told you.
if you narrowed it down to your phone being faulty.. (it happened to me too... ) and I just saw that you are waiting for it to be fixed, just wait until you get it back... ( i hope they will fix it for you too)... in my case they changed the logical board, so it's basically a new phone on the inside.
good luck.
Here's another problem I found, the standard inline earphones with mic and single button doesn't work.. it worked just fine on my Desire HD and nexus S as well as nexus one..
I tried 2 different ones, my guess is that the Atrix headphone jack only has audio out.
if you guys have found otherwise let me know how I can get that to work..
if in fact the Atrix is only audio out on the headphone jack I'll definitely return it tomorrow and get something else..
I just grabbed an iPhone headset (stereo) and made a call and it worked great.
I'm having this same problem. I used a pair of SkullCandy 50/50 and only got audio. The mic was still working on the phone, and the buttons on the headphones didn't do anything.
I have ibeats headset, everything works on DesireHD and my iphone. but for some reason none of it works on the Atrix.. beh..
I dug out an old pair of headphones that came with a Palm Pre, and the mic works on that. The button also brings up a menu to start a voice program. They do not have volume buttons so I cannot test that.
This is really going to annoy me if this phone can only use crappy headsets.

Was this a standard one that comes with the iPhone? Do the volume buttons do anything?
Skullcandy FMJ w/mic
I have the skullcandy full metal jacket w/mic and it works fine. Although when I first inserted the jack into the plug (*beavis laugh) the phone still played music out of the speaker(s) on the phone. So I pulled the plug out and reinserted while twisting the plug. Dont push too hard cuz it seems the plug does not go all the way in. The curve on the case near the jack makes it appear that it is not fully inserted. Try cleaning your plug as well.
Both headphones i tried stick out of the phone a little bit, and the same amount. Plus audio works on both, I would think that audio would not work if one was not plugged in correctly

Just tested and the volume buttons don't do a thing.
I tried "removing" vlingo and voice commands/search, but still can't use the remote button on my headphones.
might have bad jack
The jack might be broken or not connected well. It is a modular piece that can be removed without de-soldering if you take the phone apart you can test each ring on the plug/jack for continuity by touching the meter to the springy metal contacts that touch the circuit board. I would just do a return or atleast have att try other headphones. Im not sure about the volume control but the single button on my mic controls everything including media forward reverse and pause. I can even get vlingo and google voice search to come up ( a long press on the other hand opens the media application).
Old thread... but for future reference, Motorola switched the headset pinout on this phone and the Xoom. You'll have to ask the Cliq guys what they use, or you could wire a adapter cable up.
I can't post links, but look up the Motorola OH20 and motorola.com /Support/CA-EN/OMTP-Headset-Support
Wow, that is kinda retarded that moto did that. I'd never even heard of OMTP until just now. Seems MOTO is the only one that does this. Some 'open' standard. Seems the only way around it would be to use a B headset.
Wired Headsets Don't work due to OMTP
Well...
I am a huge fan of Bluetooth technology and have just about every kind of handsfree, however I was really looking forward to the 3.5 mm jack. There are some pretty impressive headsets available.
This is what I found about OMTP:

This isn't the problem. I have a xoom and the same headset can play/pause.
So, no solutions to this except for spending another 50 bucks to buy a new head set that's omtp compatible?
I have a set of ear buds rat came with a blackberry bold from work. It only has a single button but it does do play/pause in winamp and the mix works. There is a post in the accessories section with some options and reports of ways working for everyone.

Hi,
I found out that none of my Audio jack cables I have in my car, at home as well as all my headphones doesn't work well or doesn't work at all with my Xperia play.
Sometimes only one channel will play, other times everything sounds fine but the volume will go all the way down on it's own just like I held the volume down button (but I didn't)
I have red online about similar issues with the X10, and people telling the wiring is different and require headphones from SE only.
Other than that I love this phone!
EDIT: Faulty device. My new one works well.

if you have a mic with the headset and it is non-SE branded, then yea, it is gonna get jacked up; regular headphone will not have that problem
Hmmm...
None of the audio cable I'm talking about have a mic on them. I might have a faulty device then.
I think I'll try to return it.
Had the problem with the earplugs that came with the play, sometimes turning it a bit fixes the problem...
For me that's the only one that works perfectly.
Every other cables or headset are messed up. (ie. In Backstab the voice over are barely hearable and podcasts I listen to everyday is the same. If I unplug the headphones the sound from the speaker is perfect.)
I'm heading to Future Shop right now I'll post when I get back.
Thanks for you input guys.

Edit
Confirmed.
It was a faulty device. The second one could not detect me Sim card but the 3rd is all good for now. The good news is that one is black!
Similar problem here. I've just tried my old HTC headphones and it sounds muffled and some parts of the music can't be heard. Put the Sony headphones in and it works fine.
Also, my S9 Bluetooth headphones worked fine first time.
D.
You probably got a faulty one as well.
The one I got now does'nt have this problem. Had to explain and test in front of the guys at Future shop to prove them I was right.
Bluetooth was working properly on mine too.
Hello
I am looking for in-ear headphones which support play/pause, microphone and volume control. Preferably this should be accomplished by 3 buttons: middle button for play/pause and left/right buttons for volume control (just like on iOS).
I do not look for one-button or bluetooth solutions.
As I already searched on xda, I found those headphones:

However, I do not know if they work with the Nexus 4 or if there are more headphones available.
Could somebody help me out here please?
I gave up looking for headphones with buttons like those because the main reason you have headphones/earbuds is because of the music or podcasts, with an occasionally call here and there...well for me anyways.
And IMO, the one button is good enough which can be found on most headphones. This "universal" button usually just plays, pauses, answers calls, and now a long press will launch google now.
However, you can add an app called Jays headset app or remotecontrol for earphones app. This will enable the number or clicks to determine certain functions like volume control. GL
the 3 button headphones dont work with this phone. It is my understanding that the devices that support the 3 button controllers have a special circuit that is not present on this phone. I have a samsung 3 button and htc 3 button headset that do not work on this phone. I have tried several of the apps that allow you to program the buttons but they did not help.
Just get a nice single button headset and be happy.
Could you recommend a good single button one? My HTC earphones are screwed and I'm looking for new ones for my nexus.

If you are looking for in ear headphones, you cannot go wrong with Kipsche or Shure's with the integrated mics. If you are on a budget, Jays One + for android is an alternative you can look at for decent in ears.
For over ears, there are so many to look at. You can look at any ones that function for "i" devices and they will work for our phones. It's that ONE button or middle button that is the only thing that you are looking for it to work with your phone.

Sigh. Thanks for the information. After no USB on-to-go and a crappy battery life now this. I wonder what will come next.
I guess I will have to look for good one button headphones and an app which supports altering the function of this button. Any recommendations for such an app?
During my time googling on this very issue i came across these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007IPKBA4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=AEUMIRKFWF0IJ
supposedly made by philips precisely for android. philips says: "Personalise your sound and buttons via the Philips Headset App" so..
however, and if i 'm not mistaken, they 're 1 button headphones - but as another person before me 's said, you apparently can determine what a certain number of clicks will do, so you probably can work around the issue.
i 'm probably getting a pair (not sure if i 'm going with these cause i 'm feeling like investing seeing as i 'm out and about a good chunk of my every day and am always listening to music - being a musician and an audiophile) next month - kinda tight financially atm , so when I do i 'll get back to you guys.
currently stuck w/ the apple headphones (not the earpods). mic works, middle button answers/ends calls and plays/pauses music - volume controls just won't work.
'nyways, hope it helped!

Does anyone else have a problem getting even a 1-button headset to work? It seems I can't even plug it in properly (sound is mono and without bass), and I tried really hard. I tested both an OEM headset that came with my ZTE Blade and a Sony MH650. Both used to work fine on the Blade but on the N4 - no way. Headsets without microphone (and one line less on the headphone jack) work fine.

No the three button headsets are far and between. I haven't seen any that work. I mean even my old N1 headsets don't work. Well the middle button works. The iPhone 3 buttons will not work either.
Just use the one button, which I actually prefer and use an app to map button presses to forward or back up. Tedious? I guess so, but I have no issues with one button headphones. I own a slew of them lol.
I can see where I misread those posts now. No 3 buttons work at all. That sucks.
But what about the people that claim that there are headphones that actually work with the three button?

The support for 3 buttons or not on an Android phone is up to each phonemaker. Samsung Nexus 3 works fine with 3-button headsets for Android, so does the S3, S4, and many more.. while Nexus 4 does not But the Nexus 5 does (!)
I have a Nexus 3 and 4 and I also actually think music sounds better through the Samsung made Nexus but perphaps that is just mental or the sounchip has something to do with it.

They also have a really well working headset app (works with any headset by the way) that makes buttoncontrol programmable, so you can choose what 2,3 or more clicks will do for U.

OK, so I've tried with multiple headsets and got the same result. When I
I plug them in sound quality is terrible and occasionally Google now pops up. However when I hold down the button sound quality becomes normal. I can't make calls because Google now interrupts it. I tried using only headsets with one button mic. I tried doing factory reset and still same problem occurred. Is this hardware related? Is there something I can do about this?

1st of all good news - No problem with your nexus 4. Bad news - You need to get new headsets.
You are using all old type of headsets. since 2011 standard changed. Newer model comes with newer CTIA (I think) standard. Older one have black circles on the pin newer one comes with grey or white ones.
I had same problem with older ones. Just get any new one and you are good to go.

Thank u so much
i was going mad because of this crap
finally... peace of mind
Afaik you can thank Apple for that. For some reason they wanted to be special and changed the old order of the plug layout from Left Audio, Right Audio, Mic, Ground to Left Audio, Right Audio, Ground, Mic. Completely unnecessary but they did it. From then on most manufacturers switched to that layout.
This also explains your problems: Normally track skipping/pausing and other tasks are done with signals via the ground channel. Now that is going nuts because your mic signals are shot through there and are randomly interpreted by your phone.
Also the audio gets distorted because basically the circuitry for your audio signals does not have a ground channel anymore.
So, when you buy a headset online and can't test it, make sure it says Left Audio, Right Audio, Ground, Mic in the description.
