twrp and root disappeared after new update - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

As said above and I can't get it back on following the same way I done it before. Also root has disappeared. Any help would be much appreciated
Yours sincerely

OK, So you've provided next to no information at all. What rom are you running? Stock? Custom? What version?
If by "new update" you mean you installed the latest version of the stock rom then this will remove TWRP and install the default OnePlus recovery, that's expected behaviour, it will also remove root.
You should still be able to go through the normal TWRP/rooting method. Check if your bootloader is still unlocked, if it isn't then unlock it again, did you install any custom bootloader?
Back up any data before you start by the way.
If you want help you have to include the relevant information.

Fixed it by running in administrator mode

Canadian P10 Plus user here

I'm hoping someone can help out or point me in the right direction. I'm new to the Huawei environment.
My Rogers P10 Plus is currently on firmware VKY-L09C654B195. My bootloader is unlocked, I have TWRP installed, and I'm rooted (using this method - https://forum.xda-developers.com/p10-plus/development/root-huawei-p10-plus-vky-y-dm-verity-t3605061)
1) I've been getting notifications that there's a new system update, VKY-L09C654B198. I tried updating once and it obviously failed as it just rebooted into TWRP and nothing happened. Apparently I've read that I can't just update this way. I've searched the forum and seen various methods of updating (dload, HWOTA,...) but I can't seem to find this VKY-L09C654B198 file anywhere to manually download. How do I update my phone? Or better question, is it even worth my trouble to do this update?
2) I understand that DATA backup with TWRP is currently not working. Am I safe in assuming that doing a SYSTEM backup with TWRP, and backing up my apps and DATA with TitaniumBackup is sufficient if I end up messing up a firmware update?
if you want latest firmware from Huawei you would need it's original boot loader and non-root device :/ So so far you won't be able to get B198 atm since of no one has shared a copy of it. If you did it would require a re-root since updating the device would revoke the rooted changes. Which I mean root access will be lost.

Any Luck. I need a twrp backup of VKY-L09C654B198. I wanted to install the Magisck custom rom and it failed. No my twrp says no OS installed and I rebooted into bootloader. I tried to restore with DC Phoenix, now my Serial number is 0123456789ABCDEF and I can't boot into twrp as the unlock code generated earlier no Longer works. If I use dc HCU tool to restore the serial number, I will need the twrp backup to restore my p10 Plus.

Sorry, I haven't been able to find anything to help with my issues. But it isn't really a big deal for me as it wasn't really a high priority. Sorry to hear about the trouble you've run into.

Mehn it's been a week and I am unable to boot the phone so sad:crying:
I found the update files for VKY-L09C654B198 on hicloud site, will I be able to get back to stock if I mess up something (like flashing custom ROMs...). I read up on guides for using HWOTA, is this all I need to be sure I can return to stock if I need to?

Noob Questions: Firmware,Bootloader, root.

Hi, i just got the moto g5 plus, i always have phones that from the moment i bought them they wouldn recive any updates, so i realy didnt care if unlocking the bootloader installing new recoverys will affect the OTA updates. So i have a couple of questions.
1- first i want to at least have a stock firmware just in case, but i cant figure out which one should i download from here
firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/Moto%20G5%20Plus/Stock/
Before i always use sammobile.com and it was really easy to found a stock firmware from Argentina. My compilation number is: npns25.137-15-11 this means that i suppose to download that one XT1681-XT1683_POTTER_BRASIL_LATAM_MEXICO_7.0_NPN25.137-15_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip ?
2- it is possible to unlock the bootloader and root your phone without installing a new recovery? i was reading some post and when you change your recovery or you modify something the OTA update will stop working. they are some methods like the magisk but they seem i little bit too complex for me and i don't want to do it every time that a new update is available.
thanks for the help, and sorry for my English i am from Argentina.
1. yes, but any build will flash and run, so it doesn't really matter that much...
2. Nope. You need to flash TWRP in order to root. This is because the stock recovery will only flash signed images... You can use Magisk, after backing up a stock build. Anytime there is an OTA, just restore to that system image, Flash the original recovery via fastboot, and then take the OTA. Once you have it, flash TWRP again, and restore to your other build. Or just run a custom room like Lineage or RR, and this whole thing isn't really an issue anymore.

yeah i know i had a samsung galaxy s3 until now, and i always have cyanogen, slimrom or now lineage, but this is the first device that i have one that will get updates (at least 1 more :S) and i want to seize that
i will start downloading that file just in case
1- ok so unlocking the bootloader doesn't affect updates only when you modify files? when the update is installing is basically comparing the files that you have with the ones that you suppose to have and if there is something different it will fail? its something like that?
2-dumb question how do you do a full backup in the stock recovery there is no option no do a nandroid backup or it will appear after i just unlock the bootloader?

Bootloop

Hey everyone I just flashed the stock ROM on my device and just after that I got the update, when I clicked onto update my device just got moved to TWRP and didn't flashed the update too and finally the main issue is that my device just stuck in the TWRP. When I turn on my device It directly loads to the TWRP, I need to go to bootloader menu and then hit start to turn on my device.
Could anyone tell me how to solve this issue??

Can't auto process 'stock' OTA updates with custom recovery. Must use stock recovery plus meet several other prerequisites that are difficult to satisfy on a rooted/modded device. Best option is to restore the nandroid you made before updating. What, no backup?? Reinstall stock image and hope for the best.

Problems to update

Hi!!
I'm having problems to update from android 8.0.0. My phone is no rooted, the bootloader is open (I have learned that it's so expensive to close it xD xD, when you close it the phone makes briked) and when the update is downloading and the phone needs to reboot to install it, I can't because apears TWRP and I can't to install from here, and I don't find the normal or stock recovery to install it.
What can I do?
Thanks in advance!
You can flash this in twrp just like any other rom.

I had my phone unlocked and rooted with Fulmics 4.2 onboard.
Right when Oreo dropped, I locked my phone and flashed the update straight away.
No brick occured.

So I not need another OS, in fact, I have this oreo installed, but when the system sais that there are updates (now I have one update pending of 700mb) and when it's need reboot for install, this can't finish because TWRP appear, and doesn't let it finish to install the update...
I don't know exactly what I need to do, and I don't want to lose mine actual OS.
Could be possible to update the updates, likely manual mode or similar? Without reboot the phone and avoid the reboot and pass by twrp?
Thanks again

How to install OTA updates with unlocked bootloader?

I have PPW29.116-20 update installed on my G6 Plus. On that same update, I followed the instructions from the other thread to unlock bootloader and install Magisk for root. Now, I am trying to figure out how to install latest OTA security update that started showing up few days ago. I couldn't find any clear instructions around here, as most of them are either from Oreo times, or not very clear. Hopefully, someone has run into this issue on Pie already and knows how to deal with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, You can't. You have to be on stock ROM, re-lock the bootloader, take the OTA. There are some risks in re-locking, you can't have any modifications active or you might brick. But if you know what you're doing, it's safe.

Does locking need to be in the original stock or the latest version also works?

Latest also works. That way you get the newest one and the OTA update is not needed until the next possible update.
You have to uninstall root, if you had a custom.bootlogo you have to replace it with original bootlogo and you can take the OTA.
Or you can just download full fastboot firmware and flash it

Select your channel (don't know what's your channel? Go to settings> about phone and software channel)
If your channel don't have the lastest build version download from retail folder

I tried to relock my bootloader, and while it was successfully relocked, I am still unable to get updates.
I unlocked it back on Oreo, but never made any other software changes.
The device boots up with the 'different OS has been installed' message and the updater tells me the system integrity is compromised. The device is also decertified from Google play.
Has anyone got any tips?

Maybe get the latest version for your channel and flash it using fastboot (as in, full wipe OS reinstall). But wait to see if anyone here has a better idea.

for now there`s no a perfect way to re lock bootloader, if you want to hide the "different OS has been installed" warn only flash this zip before you re lock your bootloader, dont forget that in stock will still show that system is compromised if you try to search for updates. (so my recommendation is dont relock bootloader! flash full stock rom with fastboot commands if you dont want to loose your apps just erase "fastboot erase userdata" from fastboot commands)

For get certified playstore you need to verify that you can install Netflix if you can only wipe app data and playstore will show as certified device.
if you cant install netflix you need to change device fingerprint with a magisk module Safety Net Patch or with Magisk hide props.
ETA: never mind, figured it out.
