I have the 8GB/256GB direct from OnePlus and looking at the system partition size see it is 2.7GB and almost full. OOS is 9.0.5
Does OOS and OP6T have a fixed system size or does it resize according to needs when flashing?

Did you ever find any info about this? I have the same config, barely used the phone for 1 day and only have 54MB free
The system partition does seem a bit tight. 've got about 60 mb free.
Looks like priv-apps, where OP has put their own bloat, is taking up most of the space that could be deemed useless.
A "community" debloater script could be useful, I'm thinking.
Gaining place in system partition is irrelevant as by definition the it's reserved for system apps you don't gain anything for your personal apps located in /data partition. This one is dynamic and adapts itself.
Debloat is only interesting if you want to get rid of unused system apps eventually, more a cosmetic goal.
54.5mb left in system for me, running 9.0.6 here. Now how the hell OP can fill a nearly 3GB partition with an Android build is beyond me. That's a lot of bloat!

True, though there is some merit in lessening clutter.

On a positive note, there is not much space left to add more bloatware

Wouldn't that system partition be for both A & B slots so it's really 1.4GB or so for the ROM? That falls inline with what the full ROM update sizes are (and typically have been for the last few OP devices). :good:

I thought Diskinfo showed only the mounted system? I might be wrong though! It does make more sense since a 3GB rom installation seems overkill!
I just updated to the latest 9.0.15 and Solid Explorer says "0 B free of 2.71 GB" for the root partition. Unable to use many of my apps that need to push something in the system partition, it says no space left.
Has there been any workaround for this? I've got really less apps installed and I remember nice amount of space left before upgrading.

Bro, I too faced the same problem when I flashed the latest 9.0.15 rom first. I am rooted and wanted to chnage the hosts file, but total commander and other files managers like ES, EZ all gave an error that /system has not enough memory. Then I thought of reflashing the same rom again as I did earlier, and things worked out fine. I was able to edit the hosts file and save it. I was able to mount it. But still I just have 7 mb left of 2.71 GB. I don't know the exact reason for this :/
Yep same here, glad others are seeing this, not glad any of us are. Hoping for a solution soon.

Same here. Was gonna post a screenshot, but it looks like everyone is becoming aware of the issue.
Just an fyi, I tried deleting a few things like icon pack apks to see if it would free up space. Diskinfo shows it still full but titanium backup says I have 6.7 mb free. I thought that was enough space for my adaway hosts file to work, but it still says my storage is full.

I was able to free some space using Solid Explorer. I tried uninstall with Titanium Backup and while it says "successful" it is not. Reboot phone app is still there.
I removed Google Play Movies using Solid Explorer. Rebooted phone. Had free space, patched the host file, done. Still have a couple MB free after such.

I moved some things around in the system/reserve folder. It has OnePlus apps in it. I moved the whole folder, changed my font with ifont and did the adaway, but I couldn't move the folder back due to space. I remade the folder and moved most of the apps back, but couldn't move everything. I left out the icon packs and a few other things. I wonder if I can just reinstall those apks if I really want the apps? So far, I haven't noticed any issues. I still have enough space available for these apps, but I guess Android won't let them move due to space.
Just updated to OB14 and the system storage is FULL!

How do you uninstall with solid explorer? I'm new to it. Do you go in the list of system apps, select the app, and hit delete?

Go to root folder.
Then go to System and then App.
Find the folder for the app you want to delete (I removed Google Play Movies which is in a folder labelled "Video").
(optional but recommend copy the folder somewhere on your regular partition (e.g. any of your normal folders like downloads, twrp, etc.)
Then delete the APK in the folder. I kept the folder in case I want to add it back I'd remember what it was called.
Reboot phone.
Enjoy the free space.

So I rooted the thing in order to remove some stock apps that just take app space and do nothing...I used 'Root Uninstaller".
Removed Wisepilot,Postcard,Playnow, etc. ,result:25 Mb free before,25 Mb free after?!
->apps removed,free space completely unchanged.Why???
So I installed root explorer and began searching for the apps remains myself.Couldn't imagine it,android system is complete MESS.Anyway, there are 25 mb free in the /data folder,so I assume that's the folder...cant find the apps I deleted, only their empty folders. There's another folder- /system,that has 38 Mb free, but that's no use to me...

Try searching with root explorer this apps in data/app and system/app (.apk files) and delete them.
Ah,now I see...the stock apps folder is separate from user apps folder.I have some questions then:
1.Can I install apps there?38 Mb free
2.Can I merge them somehow?
3.Which apps are ok to remove(no damage) by the way?
4.What's the goal of the phone being rooted then?I wanted to free some space, but since I can't It's useless by now.Anything else to do?
1. Yes you can.
2. What do you mean merge? it should be in system/app
3. Just dont remove system files. Just remove the app you wanted to remove eg Removed Wisepilot,Postcard,Playnow.
4. Rooting the phone can give you overall access to your phone filesystem and even put custom ROM in it?
Dont tell me you rooted your phone without knowing its pros and cons?

You have full control of your phone (mainly acces to system files, edt, copy, del).
U can install any soft which needs root acces and upgrade functionality of your device.
Recommend!
Cool, how do i do that?(install apps is stock apps folder instead of user apps folder)
First take a look here

I am not rooted.
I have researched and every time someone talks about this topic they start refering to doing things in root. I am a Linux user specifically a Linux Mint 13 KDE. However! I don't work with the terminal and have not since my DOS days, nor do I want to. IMO I'm too old to bother with it.
Now I use ES File Explorer as my file browser and I see there seems to be a duplication of almost everything on my device yet there is not enough room on the Nexus 4 16GB to hold 2 of everything I have loaded onto it.
So I assume the extra stuff I see are sym-links (I don't realy understand what they are just that they are not real). Am I correct?
Why when an app looks for duplicates does it show the stuff in /storage/emulated/legacy etc. and in /storage/emulated/0 etc. and report them as the same size?
Why am I allowed to create a folder in /storage/emulated/0 or /storage/emulated/legacy if they just contain sym-links? IMO I should not have access to those folders without being rooted.
Why when I add a folder in /storage/emulated/0 or /storage/emulated/legacy does it show up in /sdcard?

I was going to post a simpler version of this question: Why do I have [Android 4.2.2 on a Nexus 7] /storage/emulated/0/, /storage/emulated/legacy/, and /storage/sdcard0/ when they seem to have exactly the same contents? When, if I create something in /storage/emulated/0/ it's duplicated in the other two locations?
But I noticed this thread and decided to check it out. I am shocked that it'' gotten no response in five months.

They are basically the same thing. 2 mount points pointing to the same storage device and partition.
If you create something in one folder, it will show up in the other. Same applies for deleting stuff.
They do not take away more storage space, as it is only available once but shown twice.
You also don't need to worry about it in any way because file browsers normally set their default directory to one of these locations.
As far as i know, Google changed the mount points in Android 4.2 to /storage/emulated/0/ due to them switching to MTP and EXT4(?) for the sdcard. The other mount points are still there for compatibility.
Don't quote me on that, though.
They changed it for multi-user feature

Why would you even want to delete it in the first place? You wouldn't be gaining anything is just another mount point.

/storage, /sdcard are sym linked folders, that means when you open one of those, it redirects to the original(/data/media/0), as for the 0 is just a multi user feature implemented in android 4.2, but only enabled on tablet androids.
Why do this Sym-Link?: simple so it dosent break apps(not only file explorer type of app, but all apps).
Still dont get, why it would break?.Simple. android api have lots of ways to write/read files from folders, u can do manually,u can get the data path, u can get the sdcard path, etc, etc. so to not break that they just does these sym links, thats why in one app the storage contentents are listed on /sdcard but on others, is /storage, etc, etc. one example of an app that broke because of these changes to android is titanium backup, u need to change the internal storage on it, so it work.
Are they really symlinks?
I want to make sure that they are sym linked files/ folders and not additional copies as it will directly impact the storage.
Emulated storage is the only reason i have not upgraded yet to Android 4.4 yet, despite ROMs being available ages ago..
1. Please let me know for confirmation, if there is no impact on storage space.
2. Can Link2SD be used in 4.4 with emulated storage?
3. If there is a file and its sym link/ copy; are the rights equally assigned to both files/ folders?
I mean to ask if there is a provision to have root previlege on the original file and read only rights on the sym link ? Is it possible??
the main reason for this question is that, if by mistake i do something on the sym lilnk, it should not affect the original file.
and whatever change i wish to operate on, i can do it on the original file itself.

Dwipen

So my phone seems to have two systems (or probably more) running and it IS using up my memory. See attached photos. I own a 32gb Optimus G pro. Rooted and custom recovery. Beeen trying out a few ROMs. Well somehow I noticed that there is some kind of ghost app/system using up my memory. I only use 7.36 of my sd card (internal). Yet I only have 6gb of memory left. And I just noticed my calendar has double the entries.
Is there a fix??? Or do I have to reflash stock kitkat???
What happened? The only irregular thing that happened is when I was restoring a nandroid backup I fell asleep and woke up 3 hours later and noticed that somehow the phone was making another backup. Could that be the cause. Restoring doesn't fix this. What can I do?
I can't rfactory reset since I have a custom recovery. Doing it in the custom recovery has no effect.
Oh and I did flash freegee's cwm over hoangnova's cwm. Someone told me to update cwm through freegee because I couldn't flash any custom roms.
I have similar problem.

The phone is unrooted.
How is this possible, I am very disappointed, and frustrated.
This is a big thing. I have pay for 32GB version and i suspect that they fraud me.
Also i have connect the phone via usb to my pc and i saw that the total size is only 11,9GB and not 32.
Also i have install to the phone the ES File Explorer to check the storage capacity and i saw that the phone have 11.94 GB Total capacity and not 32 i suspect that you have change something to the phone software. to look 32gb but actually is only 16GB version. This is fraud.
I have make factory reset with erasing data and upgrade the system but remains the same. :/
Please give me your advice.

Imagine a HOUSE. The house = the storage location. Everything in it is your data... furniture etc. These are your files.
storage location \legacy = the back door.
storage location \0 = the front door.
If you delete a file = take your chair and throw it in the yard. Its gone from the house no matter if you entered the front door or back door.
yes, it consumes double storage!
I also have the same observation. Whatever the explaination from previous replies, it consumes my storage double! And it hurts if you only have 8 GB internal storage in my Moto G.
X-plore app can show the storage mapping in my root folder.
What we need now is a solution how to avoid this double storage consumption.
So, we have two identical houses, instead of one house with two doors!

I completely understood the analogy about the house and furniture but it does not answer the above question.
Why does it reflect as double the amount of storage being used if it is technically one spot. Its not like its one spot with different files, its one spot with duplicate paths of ONE file that are somehow reflecting as double files, using double the amount of space.
Sorry I'm trying my best to explain and work logic into this lol

Clear Cache files, Temporary files .
go to
/sdcard/DCIM
On DCIM turn on hidden items.
Now delete .tumbnails its more than 1GB file & its no uses.
Do you mean go to settings and the storage and click on cache and empty?

Cliffs: I was suspicious of how little free internal storage I had on my Z Play so I started looking into where it had all gone. I found Motorola to be reserving space for OTA updates and enforcing the reservation actively -- I worked around it and got my 1.2 GB back.
If you have root access you can use the steps below to resolve -- otherwise, at least you'll be more informed about whats going on with your storage.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to Android settings my 16GB Z Play running 6.0.1 has 9.41 GB of storage left after the partition allocated to /system. Not long after I got the phone setup with my usual set of applications I received an insufficient storage warning -- SOMETHING was eating up a ton of space.
A photo backup I had run was partly to blame and since I hadn't yet used my SD Card, this was my fault... I resolved that -- but the math still didn't work.
I started digging around until I came across a directory that I would later learn is reserved space for OTA download and cache.
If you're able to access your file system, take a look at /data/data/com.motorola.ccc.ota/reserved
You're going to find 12 files, each 100 MB -- sequentially named dummy1.zip, dummy2.zip, etc.
These are created by the OTA client, located in /system/priv-app/3c_ota -- and the amount of space reserved using the dummy files is determined by a file called reserved_space.txt located in /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.ccc.ota. If you open this file you'll see '1200' -- representing the amount of space in MB to be reserved.
First, you should remove the dummy.zip files, but only deleting the files is pointless since the files will be recreated by the OTA client.
To prevent them from being recreated you can:
A.) Disable/delete the OTA client (I renamed mine, dropping the APK extension)
B.) Edit the reserved_space.txt file
Thanks for looking out Moto, but I'll take it from here.

how to free the space and why this pop out keeps on coming?
Isn't there a reason why these dummy files exist? Does OTA update still work fine after you delete them?
12/21:today I copied a video file about 1G from my PC to 5T, using MX player to watch it, then I used OOS built-in file manager to delete it……OK, yep, Hi……I/O bug again.
-------------------
OOS 4.7.5
Yesterday got my 5T, rooted and installed root explorer. When I deleted some big file like OOS 4.7.5 zip via it, I found the space left no change, only way is a reboot.
The issue happened once on my OP 3T, not only using Root explorer, all 3rd party file explorers like ES, Solid Explorer , have the issue. But oneplus fixed it in update later.

Anyone same here on 5T?

I may have experienced this yesterday. I'm on 4.7.4 stock. I had been copying files, firstly from my PC to the phone, then from a micro SD card to the phone. In each case I was moving game data to Android/OBB so I didn't have to download it all over again, meaning I would only have to download the app from the Play store. This didn't work as normal, and then when I tried to delete the data using ES file explorer, the app couldn't 'see' it in the first place. The built in file explorer could but I don't think the storage space changed until after I rebooted. After copying the game data over again, rebooting and then downloading the app from the Play store, only then did game see the data in OBB. Something odd was going on but I was only half paying attention, especially to the remaining storage space.

yep, actually I also don't pay attention at the first place.
But I tested later, copy some big file like a video clip sometims via Root Explorer, then I can see the storage space left is smaller. Test to delete file copy A clip via RE, storage space no change. Test to delete file copy B clip via OOS file manager, storage space reclaimed. Only after a reboot , original copy A clip space reclaimed.
So every one can test it easily and quickly to see if the issue is there on 5T. If true, then I'm disappointed about this thing, because it was fixed before, how can an old bug rebirth:silly:
I can second this. There was a SDCARDFS disabler or something released by @eng.stk as a Magisk module. I am tempted to dig it out to give it a try.
EDIT: If anyone wants to try this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71671217&postcount=4123
pretty sure there was a very similar bug on 1+5 that got fixed at some point. And if I recall correctly the fix was something to be added to the build.prop.
Need to dig tin the 1+5 forum.

As far as I can tell that module would remove ro.sys.sdcardfs property, which doesn't look to be present in the actual build.prop.
Maybe setting "ro.sys.sdcardfs=false" could do the trick?

So, the issue I was referring to was:
https://www.xda-developers.com/io-bug-on-oxygenos-4-is-causing-deleted-files-to-still-take-up-space/
And the actual fix was to remove that "ro.sys.sdcardfs" property. Which is not there on 5T already.
I'm gonna try to change that to "false" instead, and see what happens.
EDIT: I was working under the assumption that was happening for me as well, but looks like everything is working fine on 4.7.5 with space being cleared as soon as I delete a file.
But, at least, adding "ro.sys.sdcardfs=false" to build.prop didn't break anything.
Which version are you on?
And I just found when I use Root Explorer copy one file , then using OOS file manager to delete it, the issue is still happening.
The fix with the Magisk module did not work, changing the prop to false instead of deleting also did not work.
Reading this I thought I might had tested for the I/O bug when I got my hands on the device. Couldn't remember for sure so went back for testing purposes.
I/O bug is present on 4.7.4, tested.
I/O bug is present on 4.7.5 as far as i see reported here, I never updated to it.
I/O bug is not present on 4.7.2. tested.
So it seems as it was introduced somewhere between 4.7.2 and 4.7.4.
Well done OnePlus...
I am on 4.7.5 and I can't replicate this problem. When I delete any file, the overall storage size is reduced accordingly and instantly. Tried with both Mixplorer and Solid Explorer.
What format do you have for data? ext4? f2fs?

Shouldn't make any difference...

I'm double posting because... You quoted me on another thread. Sorry XDA.
I have not personally tested on 4.7.5, but it was on that build that @Iwbtone first found the storage bug so I have to take his word on that.
I tested it on 4.7.4 and bug is present.
I reverted to 4.7.2 no bug to be found.
I tested with both Root Explorer and Solid Explorer, but any external file explorer will trigger the bug.
Also random installed apps deleting files might trigger it.
Workflow for testing purposes.
Copy any OOS Full ROM zip file to any other location, check used storage on Android settings.
Delete the new copied file with an external file explorer app and get back to Android storage settings.
The used storage remains as if you haven't deleted the zip file.
Some media files might get past the bug, I have not tested that on the OP5T and don't really care at this point, but that sometimes happened on the OP3/3T giving us false positives for cleared storage while the bug was still present.
There are 2 reports of bug not, yours and @maddler.
Would be nice to double check this with the workflow I shared here.
Yup. Deleting media files, ok. But deleting zip files, bug exists.
can someone try running trim command when you delete the zip and see if the problem persists after the command

No. Hardly related. Shouldn't make any difference.
By the way. I/O bug is still present on 4.7.6.
We are doomed. ?
