Today I updated to the OTA Oreo update. I noticed a lot of options were removed, including night mode and Moto handwave. Another thing that seems to be missing is the option to turn down the brightness of the Moto display screen. Did they remove it or something?

Moto has shown mercy and upgraded our phone to 8.1. And they are holding on important features so we upgrade our phones. I am switching my Mobile just because of absense of night mode.
Please don't purchase Moto phones in future. Pathetic company

I never remembered G5+ having night mode, handwave, nor moto display brightness on nougat. Are you sure you're on the right forums? (This is for G5+, not G5s+)

The Moto g5 plus actually has all the things you mentioned but came turned off by default. They had to manually be turned on via a couple easy methods without much hassle.

i tried the guide which helped you flash the us sw on the EU version of the device, and it worked. I was running the US version for 1 day, tried updating, nothing worked, i kept it for about 26 hrs and no update popped up, i would've pulled the update and uploaded it. Now i returned to the EU version so i can benefit from the update when it rolls our for the EU versions. I can't say i'm disappointed, moto G is an awesome device, cant wait for january
I'll give my impressions once I actually get KitKat. I pre-ordered the US GSM model direct from Motorola, and I live right smack dab in the middle of the USA.....no update yet. =(

I doubt it, good cameras come from using good quality lenses and sensors, motorola skimped in the camera hardware for the price point knowing that most ppl just upload to facebook or ruin with instagram.

Nice try. There is nothing wrong with the camera hardware in this phone. There has been some sort of aggressive software filter that blurred the photos in 4.3 but it is fixed in kitkat. Perhaps you should see for yourself next time.

Just updated my Moto G, but the Google now command "OK Google" doesn't work from outside Google Now. I have to click on the button first to enter now, and then it works. Wonder if this feature is disabled on Moto G, or if I'm doing something wrong. Was kinda excited to be able to use my phone completely hands-free while driving etc.

Thanks it works now but not when the phone is inactive (black screen). I heard that Moto X can wake up at "OK Google" even when inactive, and I was hoping installing Kitkat would introduce this feature to Moto G, but I suppose I was wrong.

Confirmed for our Moto X gen1 devices!
Maybe I will remember to do the right thing and wait until root is found before updating this time....
Funny. The Moto X (first gen) is the first phone I had in years that I did not feel the urge to root. And I used to be a compulsive flasher. About the only thing I miss is being able to easily block ads, and even those I can handle. Makes life easier....

At home at least, have you tried to use open DNS to block them? You can set up your router to use openDNS as the DNS it hands out to client and then any of the known ad domains that are erksome you can block at the DNS level similar to what you did with adblocking via /etc/hosts previously with root.

This!
My last phone was a samsung and it was nearly useless with touchwiz and bloat.
The only thing that really annoys me on the moto X is the "AT&T" constantly in notification bar.
In the latest update they have an option to disable the carrier in the status bar. Should be on this screen. Mine disappeared for some reason but I looked it up and it should he there.

I've been the same way with my Moto X. I did try running TowelPieRoot for a few weeks recently with Xposed but was having some weird glitches so yesterday I went ahead and factory reset again and updated to 4.4.4. I don't feel like I'm missing enough to make it worth the trouble, and I want to get 5.0 on it as soon as possible which will mean not waiting till root(assuming root is possible). I've still got my Nexus 4 for flashing stuff and have been running an Android L port on it for a few months now; it's pretty awesome and I can't wait to get the new look and features on my Moto X.

VZW dev edition here. My experience has been similar. I am rooted since there are several Tasker things I like to do that require it. Also one or two Xposed things. Never had a glitch. I'd stay unrooted but miss the tweaks when they're not there.
The upgrade to 4.4.4 was enough of a hassle that I questioned whether to stay stock or not afterwards. But missing my Tasker apps and wifi tether led me back to root.
But damn, this phone is close to perfect.

Our devices are close to nexuses so i shouldn't be hard to root

My Moto X is rooted. Does that still entail for an OTA upgrade once the Lollipop drops? Or will I need to resort to some additional tricks to make that happen?

Yeah it won't be hard to root if you have an unlocked bootloader. I'm keeping mine locked until my warranty runs out. There's no way of knowing if there will be another solution like TowelPieRoot to achieve root w/out unlocking the bootloader for Android 5.0.
So, with Android 5.0 on the horizon for our Moto X, should it be expected that at first lots of things will be broken with xposed, and gravity box and such?

Yup , just saw that now, my apologies.
I installed all of the updates on my VZW 2014 moto X running lollipop. All installed just fine. Two issues appear resolved: the attentive display seems to be working and the camera is much improved. Hopefully, others can confirm this.
I'll test the Camera out today. I use Camera+ though, so can't see myself going back to stock. But its worth a shot, plus I like the new icon.

What kind of improvements did you find in the camera?
The only improvement I've seen in the update for the camera is that the front facing camera doesn't lag as bad in low light. I haven't noticed better picture quality. It's still sub par in low light and decent in good lighting.

Those on the 5.1 leak would have not received an update to Moto Actions through the play store. The version on the play store is 1.9.10. The version in 5.1 is 1.11.2. The version in 5.1 is a newer version that the one on the play store.
