[Q] First time Tablet/Android buyer.

Hello all,
I just ordered a new Note 10.1 from Costco.com (32 gig) and from reading reviews and such I was thrown into the world of rooting. For my job, we were given iPhones so I've really only had an iPhone and am used to the iOS. Not a fan. Have always wanted to try Android but have never been thrown into it.
Are there any good guides out there to help me better understand rooting, etc.? I understand that you have to unlock it, then flash a custom ROM. What happens when the newer version of that ROM comes out? Do you lose all of your Data? Can any mod be installed on any ROM? I just don't have a good understanding of how or what to do. Granted, I don't even have the tablet yet, however, I don't want to be completely lost when I get it. I do like the idea of rooting, given that you can install powerful apps that are only offered to rooted tablets.
This is my first post here and am hoping for some helpful responses of maybe some threads that I should read to help me understand things better.
Also, where do you find custom ROMS? Is there a certain section you have to go? Or are all the custom ROMS under the ANDROID DEVELOPMENT forum?

Rooting gives you access to the base files of your device. Your device does not need to be "unlocked." That term refers to modifying the device to work with other carriers (i.e. Sprint, ATT, etc) other than the one it was built to work with. Basically, in order to root, you must first install a custom "recovery." CWM (Clockwork Mod Recovery) is probably the best one for our Notes. The recovery files can be downloaded in the development forums. Along with the program (Odin) that you use to get the recovery installed onto your Note. Once you have CWM installed you can then use a couple of different methods to root or install a custom rom that is already rooted (again look for these roms in the development areas of this forum). Make sure that you read and re-read the instructions that each developer lists on their forum until you feel comfortable and then follow the instructions to the letter! Not doing so can result in your Note really getting messed up. I have not rooted my note yet, however I have rooted and installed custom ROMs to several android phones that I have or have had and it can be really worth it to do so. Personally I am waiting for awhile with my Note for some easier and more reliable methods and ROMs to become available. Right now, I have a Samsung Infuse phone with CM10 installed and a Samsung Captivate with Slim Rom-Jellybean on it. I believe that early versions of both of these ROMs are already available for the Note 10.1. Of the two ROMs, I would probably go with CM10 - (Cyanogen Mod) as it seems to be more stable on my phones. Also, when you install a custom ROM on the Note 10.1, there is a binary counter that advances, that lets anyone who would have to work on it (like for warranty service), know that a custom ROM was installed and that would violate your warranty. There is already a modification available (again, in the development section), that resets this counter, so make sure that you research that too! Good Luck!!!

What are some of the main benefits to rooting then? I would think that if you have rooted a lot of phones you would for sure want your tablet rooted..?? Can you still perform mods to your tablet if it's NOT rooted? I saw someone with a cube on their homescreen with all their apps on it. It was 3D and pretty sweet looking. Will I be able to do stuff like that if I keep it stock.
Another thing, I read that you can't put apps on the expandable storage unless you root it...That is something I would like to do because I plan on putting games on it and such. Seems crappy you can't install some of the bigger apps on your 64 gig sd.

A lot is going to depend on which version of software you get initially on your tablet. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT let your tablet update the software when you first get it. The reason I say this is, if you have the older version of the software there is a very simple way to root your device. It's a simple install of one program and pushing a button. Very very easy.
If you get lucky and you get the older software and then root using the program I'm talking about, the next step is to spend $5 and buy Mobile Odin Pro. You can then download from here the latest software for your device and flash it using Mobile Odin with the ever root option. This will keep root on your new software. This will put you on the latest stock software and keep you rooted.
Custom ROMs can be nice. But I'd get my feet wet with the stock ROM before you start to jump into the Customs. First, stock on the Note 10.1 is pretty damn good. Second, you need to have some familiarity with what you want to be able to choose the right custom ROM to suit your needs. Finally, you'll give yourself some time to learn about your device so that you don't make a fatal mistake flashing, though most can be flashed using Mobile Odin.
Alas, if you get your Note and it turns out to have the latest ROM already, you can pretty much ignore everything I wrote.

Another thing, once I root it, will I be able to have the Tablet automatically update and download 4.3, 4.4, etc. and so on? or will I have to manually download and install the new one every time it comes out?

I read in sammobile that samsung will launch Note 8.0, it is true?

I have rooted several phones but not this tablet. Why? because for me the stock rom is good enough that I personally dont see an advantage to rooting it. Some like to root and install roms for the fun of it but I need the tablet to work and dont have time to futs around with getting to know a new rom.
I also have the impression,correct me if I'm wrong, that with custom roms you loose some of the multiscreen functionality and some of the pen functionality? If true that alone would keep me on stock.

There's more reasons to root other than just flashing custom ROMs. As a matter of fact, you really don't even have to root to install a custom ROM, you just need a custom recovery installed.
Personally I'm fine with the stock ROM on this tablet even though I run custom ROMs on my phones. I did have a custom ROM installed for a few weeks that was little more than the stock ROM with a few tweaks. It didn't lose any functionality with regards to multi-screen or pen. But some of the other more customized ROMs do lose functionality.

The only thing I care about is having the ability to install Google Apps that can only be installed on rooted ROMS. I've read that there are a lot of great apps for rooted ONLY tablets. Also, some of those 3D cube thingy's that have all the app icons on it are kind of cool. I don't know if you can install those on a stock ROM..??

no, it leaves the firmware as is and it simply gives you root access, i.e. administrative control over just about all processes that the tablet is capable of. It also allows you to flash custom ROMS. that method, along with the exynos exploit method ( not possible on 4.1.2), leave you as close to stock as possible . and leaves the official recovery. Someone will undoubtedly correct me if I am wrong, but so long as you don't flash a custom ROM, I believe you can still update through OTA. I know you can through KIES. If you do go with a custom ROM, I'm pretty sure you lose all the touch wiz goodies, like multi screen as another noted above. and likely would have to use ODIN or mobile ODIN to update.

Custom apps such as multi window manager. Custom roms if you wish. Overclock cpu with tegrak on stock rooted, it does sometimes come in handy to be safely overclocked. personally this tablet is so good off the shelf you dont NEED a custom rom but that overclock is good. Ability to access and change root files such as dolphin preference in order to make it work with flash player. More reliable backups of apps and data with titanium backup. There are a plethera of reasons for rooting a tablet. But do be cautious.

Don't forget you need root for AdAway. You also need root if you want to play around (very dangerous) with the build.prop file to try to install programs that the Play Store says aren't compatible.

The 3d cube things I think your talking about are scroll effects, like cube, sphere or card stack. You dont need to be rooted for these, you can just download a launcher (nova, apex, adw) from the play store and change the effects in there.

One more question about that link. So once I follow the instructions provided in the link to root my Note 10.1, will I still have the custom ROM? And, will I be able to auto update from Samsung or whoever whenever a new version of the Android ROM comes out? I don't necessarily care about having someones custom ROM, I just want the benefits of using the GAPPS that I wouldn't be able to use if I wasn't rooted.

yo yo yo devs and phone maniacs,
i have s5-900f or something similiar to that and after 2 years i am out of patience. My phone is laggy ( snapchat and camera opening like 50 billion years maybe slightly more) and i need some quick reminder what to do. I used custom rom on my S3 back in the days, well i forgot like everything,but i remember some odin and these things so i am not complete begginer. So i need some quick tips and what to do like root your phone download this and this ( not exactly, but what is it called and what to look for) and i will google it i am not that retarded, i hope i just need quick heads up. I think main issue is the bloatware, but you probably know that more than i do.
First i have some questions
- Do i need to install custom rom to be without bloatware ?
- If so is cyanogenmod the most reliable here or there are some version which looks like the same as the stock rom ?
I dont care actually that much about look, i just need everything to work, like snapchats/camera and not to drain battery like its some milk from mother's nipple. This might be the stupidest thing in the world, but launcher thing like touchwiz and google launcher, i deal with that after the rom adjusting, am i right ? I might wrote complete bullsh*t, well i dont understand these things that much
I hope atleast someone will help me with the basics or transfer me to some thread where i can find more answers than questions

you have quite the way with words
we will need to know what exact model you have. Look under the battery. If your bootloader is locked, root methods differ from unlocked ones
and you dont need a custom rom, just root and titanium backup. make a backup of the full rom, then go into TiB and make a backup of the bloatware apps and then remove them, or if you go pro with TiB (titanium backup) you can freeze apps

Well thanks, my english i pretty bad, i try my best so few sentences might not make any sense so dont worry to correct me in any way
its SM-g900f and will custom rom improve my phone a lot ? i mean battery and speed side of my phone. I would like to avoid it if it brings more trouble than advantages.
I think i can root my phone without problems (well google will help, dont want to waste any of your time for my problems) , i just need help with custom roms.

Just grab twrp 3.0.2-1 and flash it via Odin. Once installed, boot to recovery and select reboot then power off. It'll ask you if you want to j stall SU, swipe to confirm yes. Power it back on and you should have SuperSU in your app drawer. From there you can use TiB to remove the crapware and it'll speed your phone up and decrease lag. Yes, a custom ROM will substantially improve performance and battery life. The euro version isn't my deepest field of expertise, as it has a Samsung xynos processor as opposed to the snapdragon in the us variants and some things G's can get murky because of that, but the answer to your battery and lag issue is either a complete wipe and start from scratch, TiB your troubles away or custom rom that thing!

Nice thanks seems easy, i like it. Well now the custom rom. Do you know any other good custom roms except CMod, which are reliable ? I hope CMod is, i figure he is the one who rules, since he is the most famous and i think i have read it somewhere. I just have a feelin,when i try another rom, my phone will be some issue everyday, not sure why

Well, i can tell you that no custom ROM is perfect, but the touchwiz ones are more trouble free than CM based ROMs. I run MOAR 7.0 and its very trouble free, but i use a G900P.

The euro one has a xynos processor and the us ones have snapdragons. The kernels for the xynos roms aren't compatible with the snapdragon ones

Can I have stock OS updates after getting a custom kernel and unlocking bootloader?

The ROMs seem to have bugs so I intend to just use a custom kernel and remove bloat apps. Maybe when I find a ROM updated enough so there aren't any bugs, then I will shift to it.
Also, the updating process for ROMs in general seems very time consuming and frustrating. Plus you have to backup everything before an update to the ROM. This is why I wish to just stay with the stock, until I find something that is less time consuming.
Also - Is there a guide/FAQ for the whole root/rom/kernel/bootloader thing for noobs? If so can you please link it to me?

Well, I'll try to clarify some things here. I'm using the Lineage OS Unofficial ROM for this phone. I can't speak for all the other ROMs, but Lineage has been very stable, supports the fingerprint gestures, and if all goes well then we'll see official Lineage OS builds before long. Same thing happened happens with my Moto G3. As for bloat, Lineage doesn't really come with any besides their forked AOSP apps, some of which are replaced by the official Google versions depending on which Open GApps version you choose.
As for updating, Lineage is still unofficial so that means manual flashing, but honestly you can stay on a build for quite some time, there's not a lot of major changes from one nightly to another. Also you can dirty flash updates meaning you don't need to wipe everything, just flash the updates and clear the cache as TWRP suggests after flashing. Once it gets an official build you can update in the System Settings.

Please try to search the forum and look at top and stickied posts in the future. I hope this helped, custom ROMs can do a lot of great things.
Edit: I will say however there's nothing wrong with staying on stock if you choose. I happen to love ROMs but it's personal preference.

That thread and others in the guides section have a ton of useful support whether you're an avid ROM enthusiast or just trying to improve on stock.
To answer your question about updates when staying on stock but using a custom kernel, you won't be able to get them correctly because your /boot (kernel) and /recovery (TWRP) partitions aren't stock anymore which it'll detect and fail.
When updates come you can either return to stock using the tools/guides here, take the OTA then reinstall TWRP and custom kernel (which does take some work to get back where you were), or hopefully a benevolent Dev here will create a flashable zip from the update you can just do in TWRP, which is often the case but we'll have to wait & see. In either case it's still worth it imo for the control you get over the system compared to remaining fully stock.

Simple explanation:
- You can update with OTAs if you never modify the SYSTEM partition.
- You can install the OTA using any custom recovery (for example TWRP) is you spoof the build thumbprint: you can edit the ZIP of the OTA, or change the data in the recovery.
- The OTA will install a new kernel (it fully overwrite the partition), so you will require to re-root.

"FlashFire is an extremely powerful application, it should be used with caution. Data loss, soft-bricks, and even hard-bricks are possible if used incorrectly. Unless you are an expert user, consult FlashFire's website and the XDA discussion thread before doing anything potentially destructive"

Avoid flashfire... I tried to install something and let the device "dead"... I don't know how, but got back to life after some minutes...

What's the most up to date gcam that you could install and still receive OTA updates?

I would really like to install gcam to avoid having to use the pretty crappy stock camera app, but I'm absolutely inexperienced in mobile device software modding and whatever.

If anyone could lend me a hand installing gcam, receiving updates and having my warranty then please do. All of the terms like magisk, fastboot, adb and whatever are new to me and I don't know what they mean, lol
I am however quite experienced in computing, I built computers, did various software installs, Linux, Windows, whatever, so teaching me about mobiles wouldn't be too hard :fingers-crossed:

I am on stock rom, and bootloader locked. Haven't done any tampering yet

Tmobile 6T Variant Rooting

Hello All,
Maybe i have missed this same question somewhere in the thousands of post and search just give random threads of rooting in general. My question out to all the TMO variant users that have rooted their 6T. I have not rooted any phone since the Galaxy note 5 as I just fell out of the rooting as most apps these days did for the most part everything I need. Some things cant but i lived without. Anyway.. To all those 6T TMO users and rooted. What and why did you root your 6T? Elaborate in like apps you used that needs root. Maybe if I get enough people listing useful items that need root and cant be done with an unrooted 6T. I may jump back into rooting again.

I picked up my 6t on the 10th and i am currently waiting for my unlock token to unlock my bootloader, the reasons why i would take the time to root are as follow.
(P.S. Going to make this as neat as possible for those who just want a list of reasons instead of rambling)
Reasons:

* Magisk Modules
* Custom ROMs or/and Kernels
* TWRP Backups
* Kernel Auditor Edits (Battery Life or More Performance)
* Edit System files for what you need (Customization)
* Get the most out of what your phone can do.
* Audio Mods (Viper or Dolby Atmos)
* Adaway (I've never really seen in action but i think it is for Chrome or internet apps)
* Youtube Vanced (Non-Rooted users have this as well but with rooted users there are updates to the app right when they come out)
When you root your device you truly can do what you want, I use to own a V20 (LG) and had no what the **** root was but i came across it since my phone at the time was and lowkey is still trash but the point i am making is i was tired of waiting on LG to keep my phone up-to-date since it had a multitude of issues from hardware issues (Bootloops, Overheating, etc) to weak software (Terrible UI, Trash Updates, etc). Rooting helps me maintain my experience whenever or however i see fit, i don't have to rely on Oneplus (Although updates are fast) or even my Carrier T-Mobile, I control what happens and what exactly runs on my phone, not blindly allowing or even accepting that Oneplus or T-Mobile should know what is best for my phone; I truly set my own experience.
Apps:

* Titanium Backup (Backup important app data to then import later from a data wipe or something.)
* Adaway (Takes care of ads on the Internet but correct me if i am wrong.)
* Youtube Vanced (Youtube Red features, except downloading videos.)
* Kernel Auditor (Control the CPU and GPU and much more, use it to underclock or overclock your phone to save battery or increase performance.)
* Tasker (Don't know much about this one but you can set useful tasks to launch or run to suit your needs.)
* Flashify (On the go recovery or kernel backups, use it to flash a custom recovery (Very ****ing useful if you accidentally lost TWRP) or even a boot image i believe.)
* Titanium Backup or some other system app uninstaller (Uninstall bloatware that you want off your phone.)
* Gravity Box (Xposed) (Don't know if it matters on Android Pie but it is used to add features that you want to add.)
* Magisk Modules (Get modules that you need or want on your phone that suit your needs or wants.)
Sure there are much more but this is all i got for you man, others will reply to you with probably more suited reasons but i hope i gave you a better idea on why it's good to have root. Like i always say, i'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Whhooooaaa. Hold your horses. Lol. The LG V20 rooted is a beast. Didn't even trade mine in for the promotion. The poster above pretty much covered the basics of why I will be rooting (forgot about the dual sim capability on T-Mo variant once converted to the international). Just got my unlock bin today (got this baby on Black Friday) so I'm ready to rock. Oh yeah, battery life. Saw a screenshot of someone had like 38 hours since last charge.

Viper4android, titanium back up

This is the first device I have rooted in years, and I don't see any advantage to doing so. However, I did unlock the bootloader so I could flash the international firmware, then had to root to use Magisk hide so I could use Android Pay. Outside of flashing the firmware, I do not see any advantage to rooting.

I have the t mobile version as well and i wont go without root. I use it to copy new fonts, ringtones i create, and set as any sound. I change boot animations, every few days. I test other software within a rooted system. Just depends on your needs. Oh and the biggest advantages is viper. I use it and the op6 dual speaker mod. Not the one for the 6t. With root i was able to add a proper always on, the aosp version, and digital well-being.. plus its nothing to root. Or unroot. Just tested the 9.06 hydrogen os build and bc of root was able to copy stuff back to my standard oxygen os.

For the speaker mod, do you have to install Viper for it to work?

Substratum is working with swift black. Another reason to root. I have to have a blacked out theme.

well, I've rooted dozens of phones in my life, but my last 2, the Note 8, and this one, I havent found any real need to root; sure I would like Viper, and yes, I want to use Subs to theme, but thats it..
This phone is fast and smooth as any phone ever, with the stock rom, and not enough bloat or anything like that to make me root to get rid of; also, the "custom" roms that are out there are really nothing more than repacks of older setups, and, I dont see anything in any of them that are "must have's" for me. And, there are a few custom kernels as well, but, here again, I doubt they make the phone run any faster/smoother/better than it does right now..
I got my bootloader token weeks ago, but, still havent even bothered to unlock the bootloader yet, as I see no compelling reason to have my entire setup wiped and start again from scratch..
I guess if you haven't rooted much in the past, it remains a novelty to want to do it, but for those of us who have used mobile phones for decades now, this one is definitely awe sum, whether you root it or not, and, I am in no hurry what so ever to root it..

I'm not rooted yet, but awaiting my bootloader unlock token.
I love this phone and it's 95% sufficient without root. The only reason I want to root is so I can install AdAway. I have been using Blockada however it isn't working as smoothly as AdAway did on my Nexus 5. I have intermittent network issues with Blockada which aren't caused by the block lists that I have - I toggle it off and on again it will work fine. So root + AdAway it is for me.
