landscape mode in messaging app - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

why is there no landscape mode in messaging app? Am I missing something? This is my first oneplus phone. I'm using ultimate rotation control app which works but would think there would be a way to do this without a 3rd party app.

I just filled a form at oneplus.com/support/complaints:
Hello
On the OnePlus 6T, some native apps simply don't rotate.
This is the more frustrating especially with Messages, since I'm used to type text in landscape mode with my 2 thumbs.
OnePlus users should not have to install and run a 3rd party app providing forced rotation control, just to add such a simple basic feature to the stock messaging app.
I Hope this will be fixed in an upcoming system update, being very happy with my purchase apart from that.
Best regards

Just so you know, here's the dumb answer Oneplus sent me:
Hi OnePlus User,
Greeting from OnePlus!
Thank you for contacting OnePlus Customer Support.
We understand that your are facing issue On your OnePlus device and we apologize for the inconvenience caused by this.
we request you clear cache of messages and we request on the screen rotation and try.

to which I replied:
Hi (xxxx),
Thanks for your quick answer, but you missed my point.
It's not a matter of clearing cache: some of the stock apps on the OP6T just don't auto-rotate BY DESIGN.
If you have a device near you, just see by yourself:
For example, Calculator, Calendar, Contacts and Downloads auto-rotate just fine.
But others, like File Manager, Clock, Messages and Notes just won't. Even when auto-rotate is set on in quick settings.
This is especially annoying with Messages and Notes for people who prefer typing text in landscape mode.
What I'm saying is that OnePlus should push an update so that those basic apps can auto-rotate, just like on every other recent phones.
Thanks and best regards,

Until then, besides lots of more or less shady snoopy free apps, I tried those two which I found to be the most privacy-friendly:
jp.snowlife01.android.rotationcontrol ("Rotation Control" by HDM Dev Team, 2.49 € after 2 days trial)
Cleanest and simplest-no-fuss configuration interface, but you can't get rid of a permanent system notification "Rotation Control overrides blah blah".
nl.fameit.rotate ("Ultimate Rotation Control" by FaMe IT, 2.99 € after 7 days trial)
After properly configured, the fastest and seamless experience. Does not even appear in battery use.
Lets you completely forget about it, as if the stock Messages app was set to auto-rotate natively.

^^This. Use the Google Messages app rather than the OP app. Google's rotates.

They told me to do a hard reset after the same response I got as you. And I'm not willing to pay any money for an app to rotate just one app. Thanks for the follow ups.

Good news: stock Messages last version (4.2.0) can auto-rotate.
It's available here:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/onepl.../oneplus-messages-4-2-0-android-apk-download/
OnePlus obviously doesn't push stock apps updates with OS updates (on 9.0.11 the apps versions are still from early november, why is that??), but we can get them all on apkmirror :
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/oneplus-ltd/
I just updated some which description indicates "Target: Android 9.0 (Pie, API 28)", being Messages, Camera, Gallery.
OP Launcher should be ok too (I use Nova myself).
Others like Notes or File Manager still indicate "Target: Android 8.1 (Oreo, API 27)" and I don't want to mess anything (I use another FM anyway).
I uninstalled Ultimate Rotation Control but I don't regret those 2.99 € for 2 months texting in landscape mode ha ha.
Just wanted to let you know Messages now allows it natively.

Looks like it may be coming in an update. This is from the beta page on the OnePlus site for open beta 3....Just a heads up for those that may not have seen it here in the open beta thread.
What's new?
•System
Updated Android security patch to 2019.1
•Phone
Messages now support landscape mode
Deep integration with Google Duo
•Weather
Added more search options to improve the accuracy of search results
Weather descriptions more accurate
Added more unit options for precipitation, visibility, pressure and other data
Added more detailed descriptions to weather icons

[APP][UPDATE]SMS INVITE[v0.2.11.30738]

This app is coming along great! I want to extend a HUGE thanks to everyone that has provided feedback on various issues so far.
INFO
Here's some basic info on the app for those who haven't had a chance to check out v0.1.0.0
The app is designed to allow the user to send meeting requests and reminders via SMS. If the recipient has a WM device, and has the app installed, the meeting invitations can be intercepted on the receiving device and added to the user’s calendar (if accepted), and a response sent to the meeting organizer (Accept, Tentative, or Decline). Automatic meeting reminders can also be scheduled to send to meeting attendees.
These SMS messages are created in a way that they can be read by the recipient if they do not have the app installed on their device, or even if they don't have a WM device. This means that you can still use the app to notify meeting attendees with all of the meeting info, and send reminders, regardless of if they have a WM device or not. This app can be helpful in any setting: Business Meetings, Family Activities, Personal Events, etc.
UPDATE
This is the second BETA trial I am posting. This will expire on Monday, 8/24/09. I will be posting a revision at that point, with changes made based on additional feedback from this post. For anyone that helps by providing useful, constructive feedback, I will make sure you receive a copy of the final pre-release build.
FEEDBACK
If you encounter any errors, screenshots are helpful! Also, a brief description of the actions that caused the error (as well as if you are able to reproduce the error via the same actions) is helpful. Feedback from people with devices that know each other (i.e. husband/wife, friends, etc.) that could test this between devices would be incredibly helpful.
Post #2 contains information on device requirements, as well as a changelog showing what has been added in the latest build. Also shown are plans for upcoming additions to the app. I have also added screenshots to the post #3.
Thanks!

OK. Thanks for the heads up.
1) Did you get this error immediately upon opening the program? If not, what were the actions leading up to the error?
2) Do you have .NETCF 3.5 installed on your device?
EDIT: 3) What version of WM are you running? 6.1? 6.5?
EDIT: 4) Did you install to device or SD Card?
Thanks!

No. All you have to do is launch the application once (generally right after installing). Once it's launched, it creates an application launcher that automatically launches the app once an SMS with the appropriate criteria is received. This way the app isn't always running down the battery and consuming memory. So the app can be completely closed once it's been launched for the first time.
Thanks!

Ok so I have done everything I can to try and get an error. The only error I have been able to create was when I was trying to remove the last recipient from the invitation (I fixed this in the next build).
If you have any more info on this that would awesome!
Thanks!
Ok, one thing i've found is that you cant receive an invite if your phone is locked.
Any chance of making it WM6/6.1 Standard (Smartphone) compatible as well? TBH, I haven't tried it on my gf's BJ2, but it would be nice if it worked on both platforms.
Testing now, will report back with any findings.

Possibly. I'm not very familiar with Standard as I only have Professional devices. I will ook into this to see how much of the app will have to change to accomodate Standard. Thanks for the feedback!
When I hit the calendar left soft key, it briefly shows a form on the screen, and then it shows an exception error. After clicking Quit on that error, the app crashes with another error. Both are included in the attachment.

[APP] Balanced - Silent USSD balance checker and typowidget XDA Beta

Hi guys! Fahrbot Mobile would like to invite Desire users to participate in our open beta of Balanced, an app that uses USSD commands to obtain useful info like account balance, number of free sms, minutes and traffic remaining.
It then silently parses the replies into beautiful minimalistic text widgets. We need beta testers on phones we dont have at the office, so please come and check out the thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006487
awesome!!!!!!!!!!
Im glad you like it! We will have some very unique functionality after the RC in the commercial version.
Hello. After the update some days ago I can't add a properly working widget to the desktop. Just have the caption and nothing more. Before the update everything was ok. Is there any detailed instruction how to use Balanced now?
You might have to add the widgets again.
As for detailed instructions, we have decided not to include them as people never read them anyway.
What exactly do you need help with?
ftgg99, I sent a pm with screenshots to explain.
Thanks, ill look into it - but its a strange error that probably has something to do with your setup, because my own Desire HD is running the app perfectly.
I am on cm6 though...
I also use Desire HD with stock firmware but rooted. My friend has the same issue and also and Desire HD with stock firmware but not rooted.
Hi, could you please send me a logcat of the error? Please follow these instructions:
What you need to do is:
1. Download aLogcat from the market
2. Run aLogcat
3. Reproduce your error in Balanced
5. Go into aLogcat and pause
6. Use the share menu to send the resulting text either to [email protected] or via PM here at XDA
Thanks!
I dii it. Sent the log from zel***@gmail.com
New update - beta extended!
Beta has been extended again, please send us some useful logs and suggestions on improving the app!
i dont know why, but it keeps draining my credit by sending hundreds of message to the person i personally do with the same content. the only way to stop it is by uninstalling it. i set it to check my balance after every outgoing phone call and message, and also every time i tap the widget. but the concept and interface is superb, would like to see this problem solved
Mate, the app doesnt send anything. USSD requests dont cost you money. Your problem is something else entirely.

oh believe me, im not a troll, and i can't code for ****. i searched around too, and it looks like i'm the only one having this problem. anyway, maybe you're right, the problem is something else entirely but the reason I suspected the application was the problem is because the draining started when i set the widget up and ended when i uninstalled the application. i apologize if i tainted the image of your app in any way.
Dont worry, i wasnt offended, just tired of fighting an uphill battle.
Imagine getting hundreds of crash logs from people with no root trying to use Root Call Blocker. Then they send angry emails. Finally they leave 1 star reviews.
Anyway, this should cheer you up:

[Q] SMSPopup/Glowfly .. etc w/stock SMS (badge issue?)

Hello Everyone!
Hopefully this is not a terribly stupid question.
I love the functionality SMSPopup/Glowfly bring to the android platform. I am also one of those people who don't mind the stock messaging app. Thus, when using SMSPopup and/or Glowfly I am noticing when I use the "mark as read" feature, the badge bugs out.
Quick google searches indicate this is a common issue with the corruption of the badge api built into the stock messaging app. When you clear the data and reboot the device, the issue is gone until another message is received.
I am hoping the community might be able to solve this issue! I am by far a developer; and have probably only identified the surface of this issue. I have spoken with the GlowFly developers and he stated it is an issue with the stock samsung app and it is a bug. Can this be modified ??
Any insight and or comments welcomed! Thanks guys!

Since this posting I have used multiple xposed mods to customize my S4/TW configuration. I now utilize Textra as my main messaging app which provides popups, and - in my opinion - a better texting interface for the same affect. See the following for customization.

Google Dialer - On LG G3

Greetings XDA Members,
I've searched for quite some time, with limited success on keeping a stock rom along with Google Dialer. The best of both worlds if you will, that would allow great features without the loss of another. It was always a debate between using a AOSP rom at the loss of the camera, or sticking to stock and working with xposed to change settings to an agreeable state. With endless google searches, forums read, and opinions given by others; they all seemed to end with "Not Possible". Well, with some trial and error I have found a workable solution that will allow the Google Dialer to replace the stock dialer, and also allow for "In-callui" to replace the stock one.
It also needs to be mentioned, that I cannot guarantee this will work with your variant, custom rom, or other items not factored into the equation. Though this has worked for me without fail on the ATT Model D850 on Cloudy 2.5 but there are a few details to note. The "In-callUI" will show for both Incoming & Outgoing calls, but you will first see your stock one come up for a brief second or so and switch over. For me, this isn't an issue as I don't immediately answer or hang up when a call completes. Some of the items recommended in the prerequisite are optional and provide other ways to find/adjust permissions, or freeze/delete applications (Stock dialer). I'm not personally an avid developer, but if you have any questions I've been able to gain a great deal of knowledge over the years with hands on experience with the Android operating system. Feel free to ask any questions that may come up, and I'll be happy to assist if possible.
Pre-requisites;
LG G3 - Rooted
Custom Recovery with knowledge on Flashing ZIP files.
Root Explorer / File Manager
Nova Launcher / App to launch an activity.
Titanium Backup (recommended to backup Dialer and other applications in case of damage)
Included in the attachments is the file GoogleStockDialerAndMms. This file is a flashable zip that will automatically adjust the permissions necessary to make calls. It's highly recommended that you make a backup of your current rom with TWRP/CWM in case any issues arise. As this adds two files to your system directory, there is always a chance that an error can occur.
If you choose the route of Nova, you can create a shortcut to an activity. Below I've included a screenshot of which activity needs to be chosen in order to use Google Dialer.
Within Nova Launcher, long-press on the home screen.
Choose "Shortcuts"
Select "Activities"
Find "Google Dialer" in the list, then tap to open it up, and select "Phone" (use the first one in the list)
Can I disable my default dialer?
The short answer is no. As a general rule, you will need to keep your present dialer enabled in order to receive calls. The long answer is that on some phones you might be able to disable your stock dialer, but on others you definitely cannot. Feel free to try it on your own device and let us know what your results are. If you choose to do attempt this, I highly recommend against uninstalling and instead move to FREEZING the phone applications with Titanium Backup or similar root enabled application.
747 views, and 44 downloads. Hopefully everything has been smooth for everyone attempted. Please leave feedback if you have any issues.
Good to see it's over 1200 views and counting. If anyone has any issues, feel free to reply so they can be addressed.

i flashed the zip and everything seems to be working fine. i am also able to search close by businesses, i typed pizza and it showed me the closest pizza places.
the only FC i am getting is in settings when i tap call settings-voicemail, call waiting. i don't use that so its ok for me. thanks again.
also i did not have to create a shortcut, the app icon was there after restart.

Doesn't work here....either when triggered from a Nova Settings widget or from the icon in the launcher. Instant force close. I can try to grab a log if you think it'll help?
D852, running Dene_Bluesman's rom (basically stock LG 5.0.1)
Edit - wonder if its because the rom version i'm using is odexed? Going to try the deodexed version and report back....
Edit 2 - nope still crashes instantly. Super frustrating! Please let me know if a log will help! @Eruvion
I want to try this on my lg G2, is there any reason you think it might not work? Anything that would make this zip specific to the G3?
+1 on this. would like to see if we can get this to work on Cloudy for G2.
Hi
This thread seem's a bit dead. Anyway i have flashed this file and it works. I am on N&N 1.3 rom. It's a stock mm based rom.

Latest ATT Update (March '18) - new Messaging/Gallery apps?

Did anyone get the latest security update yet from AT&T?
Looks like it was security patches, but my Messaging and Gallery apps changed.
I am OK with the gallery app, and the Messaging app is OK with the exception the text is pretty damn small! I know you can pinch to zoom, but I am unable to find anyway to keep the ZOOM setting I selected in the new Messaging app, as soon as I back out and go back to a person I was chatting with, the text is back to being small.
Just confirming I'm not the only one with this issue.
Chris
Oh, believe me, you are not alone. Mine is doing the same thing. It is also showing replies to texts in white text boxes with white type. I had to switch my purchased themes 4 times to find one that didn't do this! I also lost the ability to schedule messages, and lost all of my quick responses! This is VERY annoying.
Krista
Ditto here, white text on white background for incoming texts. Exceptionally annoying.
A few people have complained on the AT&T support forums (https://forums.att.com/t5/Samsung-Discussion-Support/Text-bubble-issue/m-p/5452599/thread-id/35765), but it seems the forum moderators are going thru and deleting threads and replies. And so far, the only "answer" wasn't an answer at all, just a canned response pointing to a tutorial (that wasn't there last night, btw) on how to change messaging settings.
If anyone has any ideas, please let us know.

I don't understand what you mean, please explain.
It's another SMS app, you can download it on the playstore.
Thanks everyone for confirming it wasn't just me. It's a shame because the stock txting app wasn't pretty bad for the past ~2 years....here's hoping AT&T steps up, otherwise I will go third party too...
Pulse is awesome. I have the paid subscription and can access my txts from any device.
First, new "update" fubared text messaging; now, there's something running in the background that's turning it into a hotplate & sucking the battery down in just a couple hours, instead of decent consumption all day long. Even after a reboot & running the "save battery" app in Settings, it's still warm to the touch, & draining the battery too quickly.
Does AT&T have plans to fix this, or is this a push to force an upgrade? (this I put to them on their forum)
SAMSUNG-SM-G891A
Android. 7.0
Patch level January 1, 2018 (so no shenanigans about "security enhancements" in this one, they ain't there)
There were betas for these updates for several months now. There must have been some big changes under the hood and this one came as a 500MB update rather than a 35MB security patch. Probably stuck with any bugs until the next major update which will most likely be Oreo. All of this is just speculation on my part.
I didn't receive any notification on my S7 Active regarding BETAs - how do you sign up for those? I would have gladly given feedback on this Messaging app....
They don't have a beta program open to the public as far as I know. Over on the firmware update thread, user khaliullov posts a link to firmware and uncovered a way to directly download firmware from ATT's servers. That's where I've seen betas for this update for the past few months. You don't want to have those betas installed as they offer no upgrade path, so you would be stuck with the issues that whatever beta you used came with.
Got it - thanks for the info!
Looks like time to investigate rooting the phone...
Just got prompted for another update - let's see what this one does...

Same here, can't really see any difference in anything so far.
No difference here either, unfortunately. I was really hoping the Messages app would be updated. This new one SUCKS.
Is there anyone would could grab the old messaging app, make it a APK and then let us sideload it? I would be VERY interested in this, as would others.... this new Messaging app is junk!
The new messaging app is really weird, but all the features are there.... you hafta hit the + sign & the features come up. To schedule messages and more.
Could be worse, half your account could be stuck in Spanish. It's been well over a year and they still can't do anything about it. Lol.
