It has super slow-mo (16x) and normal slow-mo (4x).
And I received an update yesterday which enables super night mode (which was a flagship exclusive), and it is seriously awesome. You can take 7 second exposure photos HANDHELD. (So you can take photos at dark conditions when even you cannot see)

try this. try Pro mode in camera then set ISO to 50. set shutter speed to 5s. cover the lens then take a picture. does the picture have white dots despite covering the lens?

the super slow-mo video is it 1080p or 720p and does it have software video stabilisation. Finally, is the notch annoying ?

only @ 720p 120 or 480 fps. no EIS. Notch can be hidden. sometimes its annoying when the color does not match the app. like fb messenger it sets the status bar color to black and its annoying to look at.
if you're planning to buy this phone I'd recommend on saving more so you can buy a much better one.

Used to have white dots, but when I tested today there was not any. I don't know what caused this.
EDIT: I didn't try zooming the picture. There are white dots when I zoomed in.
Just got an update today that removed super night mode for standard night mode.
To prevent any misleading, the update doesn't remove Super Night Mode contrary to the post above. It improves the Super Night Mode and renames it as Night Shot Mode.
EDIT: Looks like it was removed for some regions, like Australia...

Have you tried taking one "handheld"?
I don't think it's possible considering this device doesn't even support EIS.
would you please share a photo that you've taken?

Not true for Australia, it completely removed super night mode and the 7 seconds record and replaced it with a photo only night shot so super night mode removed.

Pretty happy with color range and image sharpness
Low-light obviously lacking a bit, but over all I think the camera is fine.

Agree, portrait mode is terrible, also all the photos add some kind of softening filter. Only good thing is that you can edit the center of the photo so you can move the bokeh effect.

Well I use open camera mostly due to options. At low light I've found that the image quality is GREAT if you use 4MP(16:9) checked with 9MP and 12MP(always at 16:9 ratio).
In 4MP at very low light I was super impressed(always 100% jpeg quality in the open camera app). Test it yourself, it worth your time. Just make sure you have a steady surface
EDIT: uploading pictures 12MP, 9MP, 4MP
Image difference 2-3 seconds apart - 9:00pm (4MP>12MP>9MP). Don't know why 4MP is so much better(less MP is worse than 12MP)

What do you give up by using open camera (does tele and wide angle switch work and how is 4K video etc) so far I like the manual mode of the stock miui camera app but also like the idea of using a standard app off the play store

Well if you want optical zoom you still need to use the stock camera, 4K rec? you can but I pref 1080p also I do like to adjust the bitrate of the video and audio and open camera does have that. I use to use this app to my 1+1 too
I like to customize everything and miui camera well ..2-3 settings at best
P.S. Open camera also doesn't have panorama but talking to the dev and said he's planning to include a panorama soon - Did you check the low light quality in 4MP? impressive(compered to higher res)

Judging from the small images I would assume that the Mate 20 had bokeh-effect on, the flowers seems to be pretty sharp and focussed but the background looks delibarately out of focus.

I'm on 122 and there were camera improvements as well as new camera features. I've found night mode to be inconsistent but when it works is glorious!
Coming from the p20 pro to this the seflie camera on the mate is terrible looks like we gone back a few years on the front camera almost makes it unusable for me...
Hi all,
I am on my third day of HM20 Pro.
Love it all and the photos sure, great
Have you guys tried to take photos from the messaging apps? Signal, message, whatsapp?
I cannot believe the... Worst quality ever!! Is there any config I am missing?
Just try it.. Send an MMS via the messaging (not taking the photo before, but actually from within the app) and let me know....
About to pack my new phone and return it....
Thanks for your comment!
The camera is awesome... Maybe not as good as the P20 Pro though at night time
i just stuck a Vodafone sim in for a few seconds to get the 122 update - camera is definitely a bit better! not had a chance to test much yet though, but from the few I have taken shots are appearing less grainy now.

I feel with software it will beat the p20p. So far I'm satisfied as it's leaps better than my 10p I sold.

This phone camera is a complete missery!
I've switched from Samsung Galaxy S7 and completely disappointed. I feel like my S7 did better photos than Mate 20 Pro. Here is a list of issues (aside of Gluegate - which affected my phone).
Front camera:
- overexposes selfies in almost all conditions
- HDR mode is quirky and either doesn't make any difference or renders too flat results
- This silly toast "please hold camera steady whike your photo is sharpening" pops up almost all the time, regardless of light conditions
Rear camera
- HDR mode is just useless
- there is no "auto HDR" settings and switch HDR on is taking too many clicks
- and yet again... toast from hell "please hold camera steady whike your photo is sharpening"... THIS IS RIDICULOUS! Even in super bright conditions, where single lens camera would do perfectly well, Huawei asks me to hold my camera steady for 1 sec? Come on!
I really hope Huawei fixes all of that because it's a complete joke.
Good luck
From what i read it seems that Mate20pro is same as p20pro release and it will need few months before the software is actually as good as the hardware .
P20pro release was a disaster, photos looked like a cartoon .

Actually, I did some test with rear camera, multiframe stacking is always on in photo mode, so you have your auto HDR on all the time and that's probably why it asks to hold steady. I think it's merging 4 pictures.
The camera app is just too complicated, with different modes that do basically the same things.
It ends up being inconsistent when you leave everything on auto.
Sometimes it will be flat and washed out with no vignetting, other times it will have ton of constrast, oversatured colors and vignetting.
So now I did choose one mode and color parameter that consistently give results I like and stick with it.

Completly agree with this either the software is ruining it or just poor production ?
One big reason for getting the phone was the camera. I had the LG v30+ previously and I loved it for the ultrawide focal length. I'm glad that mate 20pro added this. I'm really enjoying the big sensor also. The dng files look great so far. The LG v30 always had grain/noise in the raw files at no matter what ISO. I'm not seeing the grain being so intrusive with the mate20pro
After reading the Google ai blog about Nightsight and testing the functionality intensely, i realise that Nightsight is the best setting for every single pictures on the Pixel 2.
Nightsight superiority come with motion metering. An exclusivity to the Pixel 3 HDR+ mode but also available on Nightsight with the pixel og and 2.
In short, motion metering analyse the phone movement (how much you shake) and the scene movement. Base on that, the camera will adjust the iso and shutter time but also the number of frames it will take to compose the image, all of that to create the best picture. Without motion metering, the phone only adjust its setting based on light intensity of the scene.
For exemple, the scene Is still and you're almost not shaking, the camera will use a much lower iso and longer shutter time to create lowest noise possible.
Another exemple, the kids are moving fast, they are playing, camera with motion metering will use an higher iso and faster shutter time to capture the moment. The picture will have more noise, but the moment will get captured!
After testing about 100 pictures, Nightsight is always superior to HDR+, except in broad daylight were they are equal (all use low iso and fast shutter time in those instances).
Motion metering is really one of the perk that help Pixel 3 reduce the noise in the picture and unfortunately, we can only get this with Nightsight.
To help motion metering do it's job, you need before pushing the triggers reduce you're movement to what you will most likely reproduce while taking the picture
I would think it's actually not good for action shots like kids and sports because there's a pause. [emoji848]

Nope, it's meant for movement.
The pause you see is because it capture pictures after you press the shutter while HDR+ mode has already capture the picture once you press the button. HDR+ is an infinite loop that capture about 15 pictures and when you press the shutter, it take the last 15. This is why there's no perceptibly delay, the pictures were already taken!
Here an exemple:
My hand is moving in front of the camera
With normal HDR+ mode it use iso of 467 with a shutter time of 1/60. The image is blurry
With Nightsight, it detect the movement and use an iso of 1684 and a fast shutter time of 1/236. This is Much better to capture a fast moving image. The image is less blurry.
Now the last image is my hand not moving. Nightsight detect no movement so it lower the iso to a super low iso of 50 and a shutter time of 1/6. The image is almost perfect. Much better for no movement and to capture more light! With normal HDR+ mode, it would still use iso of 467 with a shutter time of 1/60.
Nightsight does all this automatically. It's so superior it turn normal HDR+ like a bad product
I was talking about a pause as in shutter lag from pressing the button to actually getting the pic captured. Are you comparing with "HDR+ On" or "HDR+ Enhanced"? "On" has zero shutter lag while "enhanced" has shutter lag. I feel like Night Sight isn't as fast as "On" in shutter response. So yes it might bump up the shutter speed and ISO but if there's a lag in actually capturing the pic, you'll still miss the shot. Unless you have something like Top Shot which doesn't work with Night Sight I believe.

Only HDR turned off capture the exact moment. HDR+ ZSL capture the last 1/2 second before pressing the button while Nightsight capture the 1/2 second after.
It's a different philosophy. At least, the picture with Nightsight will capture it in a sharper way.

Human reaction time fit ZLS description.
Capturing 1/2 second before the capture.
That's how ZLS work dude, it capture the image before you click, it's not even open for debate. Read Google AI blog there's no denying that.
Anyway you're nit picking, that's a straw men strategy and it's getting old. That was not the point of the original post. Use HDR+ and be done with it
Hey you're the one who said Night Sight is "the best setting for every single picture". I prefer it used for actual night photos as I hate shutter lag. Just saying.

Best setting for picture quality that's still true.
I prefer great picture with more details and less noise instead of a bit of lag.

I thought via Nova Launcher and having an activity shortcut that we could perhaps jump straight to the night sight mode, but unfortunately no such available exists....
Would love to be able to choose night sight by default

So when you open the camera, you can click directly to open Nightsight.

You say correct"PRO" Photophone" not video.
Shame.. ... or not(Im ok with video quality) huawei need more work on video recording(Bitrate, color, stable framrate)
When u change the lens during the recording is terrible.
I came from a galaxy s9+ and I'm really disappointed.
Does Huawei has night mode for video or its just for photos?
If it's not for videos, Does anyone know any phone that supports night mode for video as well?
Why can't I turn the eis off.... The field of view Is really not good..
I think video quality leaves much to be desired if lightning conditions are not optimal.

Google photos not too good to demonstrate video quality...
Just waiting for either ROOT or Huawei to unlock the Camera2.API so we can use filmic pro, LOG capturing and higher bitrates will improve the video quality to no end. Yet, Huawei ignore all requests for the C2.API and have done for years.
Video zoom issue
Guys, I recently baught P30 pro. I faced a peculiar problem. When l am taking a video in wide mode and then use the zoom button, first press takes it to 1x (from 0.6x of wide), second press takes it to 5x and third press takes it to 10x. When I press the button again it takes it back to wide angle. But between switch from 10x to wide there is an instant of very disturbed and pixelated video before wide angle takes over. This is not there between any other zoom switching (0.6x to 1x, 1x to 5x, 5x to 10x). Anybody facing the same issue?

Don't press, slide
Problem with sliding is between 1x and 5x which is a digital zoom and gets heavily pixelated. I also noticed that the problem happens when I jump from 10x to wide. Not from 10x to 1x.
What do guys think of the 1080p 60 fps quality?
For me, I find it worse!
It loses the details and textures when on this mode. It's even worse when in low light situation.

Video is terrible in any resolution
Just got the OnePlus 8 Pro today. Here's some real world photos with the phone. Everyone else post up what you got. I guess XDA compresses them down file sizes were 2.5 to 5.5 MB in size each. Any suggestions where else to upload them too?
Taken in normal mode

"Social distancing" where else would you like me to try and take photos at? Cars are my other hobby and I take tons of pictures of them. Only other thing I take tons of photos of is my baby but that's not getting posted publicly.

Okay check the 4 photos below...I did them in low light conditions as well.
I took first photo of the dining room from a distance. The phone applied some correction to see better detail (aka brighter than the room really was). I then shot the same area much closer up to try and get the camera to give an idea what the true darkness was of the room. That's the second photo. It gives you an idea how dark the room really looked. I then took a picture of the chic-fil-a packet auto mode (no nightscape) and then switched to the super macro mode and got up close. That's with the light off in that room in the dark. Did a solid job in my opinion. I circled the chic-fil-a thing on the distant shot.
NO FLASH full auto mode on camera (except for activating super macro for the real close up shot).
Nice shots.... I am coming from a pixel 4XL ... The night scape shots are lacking... Has anybody used gcam?

The OP8 camera tends to produce red images in low light, which is evident from your 3rd image
No need to use GCam. The GCam is better only for selfies.
