Need Help to install a ROM on Nexus 4! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am not very familiar with the root process overall, but I did root my phone like 2 years ago. So, I decided to start using my old nexus 4 today. I tried to restore my nexus 4 this morning from twrp, and now I am not able to connect it with my computer to install another rom. I am only able to access twrp on the phone. I have been trying to use nexus root toolkit on the computer but I keep getting adb / fastboot device not found. Am I missing any process here? Is there any way to solve this?

[Q] How to Root Nexus 7

Hi guys. I want to root my nexus 7 (8gb) so I can play music through a usb drive. And I don't want to install any roms or stuff like that, I want it to be exactly how it is now, with android 4.2.1. I've been browsing the forums, but I can't really find instructions on how to do a simple root for my purposes. If anyone could direct me to the steps I need, that would be great!! Thanks!! (Btw, I'm totally new to this rooting stuff, this is my first android device )

simple rooot.. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash the super user binaries via your custom recovery, reboot and profit. you either have root or you dont, there arent different kinds of root depending on your needs. i suggest you do a bit more searching and reading, because its impossible not to find instructions if you actually searched for it. of course if not finding it on xda, you can always search the words root and nexus 7 in www.google.com
There are several ways to root your Nexus7, and I think using the toolkit is the easiest.
I'd like to recommend to download this toolkit to your PC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
With using this toolkit, you can root your device as follows.
1. install the Nexus7 drivers to your PC
2. unlock the bootloader of your Nexus7
(when you unlock the bootloader, all data is deleted.)
3. install custom recovery to your Nexus7 (i recommend TWRP)
4. root your Nexus7
enjoy

Is there a later version of the rootkit? The last image it has is 4.2.1. 4.2.2 is out and I'd imagine on most Nexus-es.

Have I totally bricked my Nexus 7?

Hi,
Regretting this now but was trying to try out a different ROM after a long day so probably missed a step somewhere....
The situation now is that following normal procedure, my Nexus was wiped of user data, new ROM zip file copied across and loaded using recovery mode. After that, it had some error setting permissions with the new ROM and did not install properly (loaded but blank screen, apps, settings etc would not load).
I tried the process again and the same result, but now, I cannot even get adb working, the device is coming up simply as an unknown device and I cannot force install the google usb driver to get adb working again - so now I cannot even copy stock across to the Nexus.
My question is, without adb working now, have I fully bricked it or can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks
If you can get into boot loader you can fix it.

To elaborate a little, you'll want to get into the bootloader using the method quoted above, and then use fastboot (or nexus toolkit) to flash a stock image.
Thanks guys, managed to recover back to stock via fastboot and the command line just now .... this will teach me never to try flashing any ROMs when half asleep!
Thanks again :good:

Grouper bricked after latest 4.3 OTA, no recovery

Heya...
On my 16GB Grouper I had installed the stock rooted 4.3 rom. Yesterday a system OTA update message appeared on my screen - 1.7 MB. I let it download and install over night and just went to bed. Came back in the morning to a boot loop where the device got stuck with the four colorful thingies animation. I can access the bootloader, but the recovery seems to be broken. Can't remember if I had anything other than the stock one... Anyways, now I'm strugling to get this thing going again. I am a zero at ADB but willing to learn whatever is necessary to get me started with a working recovery at least. No tool root box will do anything really for me...
Thanks for your help in advance
Hey!
Had a problem just like yours. If your running windows then install this program its called nexus tool kit. I'm a newbie here but if you Google 'nexus toolkit wug fresh' you can find it
All you need to do is plug your device in and open the program, then select flash OTA with the boot loop option and then follow the on screen instructions
That should put you back to normal with a fresh start meaning all you data will be lost. You can also root from there to.

Yeah. It would be dumb to actually learn what you are doing to your device. You should totally use a toolkit.

Honestly, I'm just showing the user one way, I anticipated him of being a newbie. For the record, it shows you all the process's happening.

Thank you guys. You might not believe it, but I'm not a newb to Android or flashing. It's just that I've always been playing around with Samsung devices and there you'd normaly turn to Odin in case something went wrong. Here it's different.
Anyways, with this comprehensive guide I've been able to reflash a recovery image and my old rom. Unfortunately losing all of my data in the process, but there was no way to save it.

In case this happens to anybody else.

[Q] Nexus 7 gets stuck on google screen.

Hi,
I have a Nexus7(2012) I was previously running Paranoid Android and tried to update to 4.4.
I am using CWM recovery and I used the factory reset option in before I flashed.
The 4.4 ROM didn't work (because it was an ota update). When I tried to boot back into Paranoid Android it wouldn't go past the google screen, and after waiting on the screen it would put me back into recovery. I also don't have a backup to flash. I am also really bad with the fastboot and adb stuff. I just want to put 4.4 on my device, how do I do that?
(I can't transfer anything from my computer to nexus 7 because my computer won't recognise it. But it will make the USB connected sound.)
Thanks for any help!
It also happened to me but I was update via ota and its stuck in bootloader but I still manage to go into recovery mode. I also don't like using adb fasboot but I thing that is the only way that you can bring your nexus to 4.4. But that's only my advice. Maybe other great dev can give you another solution.

I never bothered attempting to back up apps and data from a non-rooted device but I'm sure there are ways
Contacts - gmail
Calendar - gmail
Photos/music/anything on SD - just transfer to pc
Call log and SMS - SMS backup +
Once rooted titanium backup will do all
To root, easy
fastboot oem unlock
Now either flash a custom recovery or boot one, for this phone I would use the latest twrp
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Or
fastboot boot nameofrecovery.img
I suggest to just flash it though for ease
Now flash either custom rooted ROM + gapps and anything needed
Or flash stock ROM and add superuser or supersu and busybox (easily flashable)
