Hello people of the xda forms recently one of my family members upgraded to android Oreo on there moto g5 plus yay but after that it went all down hill from there the phone when they are using it for basic things like browsing the web and watching YouTube it can easily hit 45 degrees Celsius in most of the CPU cores not making it very comfortable to hold also after the update the battery drains faster
This is my first post on the xda forms so sorry for any conveniences
There must be an app or something constantly running and draining battery, check the battery stats and it might give you a hint at what's up.
My guess is that whatever it is, backing up and doing a factory reset should solve your troubles. It might seem like a hassle but it usually is the best way of solving issues, especially after an upgrade.

She doesn't want to do a factory reset and could it be caused by the microSD card in the phone

Very unlikely. But that's easy to test, just remove the SD and check if it's getting better.
I also think a factory reset will be the most useful way.

My SGT is uncomfortably hot. I am not charging it right now, just browsing and the temp is 103 F. Is that normal? If not then can I do something to lower the heat?
Appreciate help.
Well 39 degrees Celsius is not normal to say the least. My Tab even under heavy usage shows an ambient temperature of around 28-29 C at the max 30 when on charge.
1. Which rom are you on currently? look up under the about the phone in settings
2. Which part of the world are you in (extremely hot area?)
3. Did the overheating start recently and if so any new apps you installed?
Clearing out these points might be a step in the right direction
Cheers!

DDJJ1/P1000DDJI6/kernel 2.6.32.0 I didn't change any of the stock stuff.Today uninstalled most of the junk, still hot. Not a single game on the device. Brightness setting is always low.
What are the factors that affect the temperature ? It's getting uncomfortable using the tab especially while reading ebook, I keep holding the device at the edges. If I take it to service most probably they will say this is the normal working temp. How to convince them? Are there any standards? Oh, and no spicy food (I hope spicy videos are ok?)

It has to either of the two reasons : 1. Software related, probably a bad app that is consuming way too much power or a stuck process. Software issue can be solved by reformatting the device. Just go to Settings-->Privacy-->factory data reset-->reset device. This way it will bring the device to factory defaults and thus the problem would be solved. Do take the backup to avoid data loss.
2. Hardware related, in which case you have a faulty battery or a component which has gone bad and the only real option available to you is to give it to the service center and try and ask for a REPLACEMENT instead of a REPAIR.
Since the software part is in your hands, do try it and post the results here. As a last resort you can try and change your Rom to a custom and stable one.
Cheers!

The slot for external SD card, just about there, area of about 2"square on the back side of the tab. The front is cool. I will try factory reset. Will it wipe out the internal SD card contents? Any easy way for back up? On my Windows Mobile I use Reso back up.

Yes, a factory reset will most certainly wipe the data from the inbuilt memory. Use an app called Titanium Backup (requires rooting) and take a backup of the apps. Store the backup by providing a path to your external sd card. Later on, after flashing, go to Market download it back and you can restore missing apps.
Hope that helped.
Cheers!

Performed factory reset. Didn't help at all. How to convince Samsung that this is abnormal temp? They are sure to insist this is normal.Isn't there any acceptable parameters which is kind of official?
The right side does get warm at the back because that is where the battery is

Fair enough, but how much? I have installed Battery doctor. It shows on an average 36 to 38 F.
Others are saying theirs is 28•F. Once I get my leather case it won't bother me but really need to know if it's a defective device.

show them the data you have tons of it over here. Or better compare the temp with another tab. I mean something similar happened with me. I got a Dell laptop which was overheating and they were not ready to accept it. I showed them the results using commonly found solutions and they agreed.
Conviction is the word mate.
Cheers!
Good enough, I guess.

Indeed. You can see this yourself within BBS (or other similar applications) by changed the point at which you wish to view statistics. For example, set it to list all events since the device was booted and it will show up. Now change this to only view events since the device was last unplugged off the charger. Now it's no longer there and since it's only happening while the device is charging, it's nothing to worry over.
I haven't researched what this service is though, but combined with the logic of what I started and what NervGaz said (awesome name the easy), I'm certain that it isn't having any ill effect on battery like all. I started monitoring battery consumption again street the OTA KitKat update because of several complaints I read about and was trying to help then out as MANY of them were suggesting just to do a factory reset and I had jump and say something because a factory reset is a drastic last measure attempt and quite honestly told them that a reset won't help a thing since they will go back to the same habits as before, meaning installing the same battery sucking applications (*cough* Facebook) or have apps such that set to sync all the time, etc.
Even if it was an issue brought on by a bad KitKat installation, the phone can always be fixed (with the knowledge i guess) without resorting to a factory reset. I've never had to perform one on my life, even now using my unrooted replacements G2. Never got around to rooting this one and also currently using apps which require me to remain unrooted. Now, being that I'm unrooted now, there could be the small chance of a system file getting corrupted etc that I wouldn't be able to fix, but if that happened I'd just root, fix the issue, and unroot.
Kind of went of track there, most likely due to the fact that performing a factory reset is always thrown around as the first step in trying to solve any issue on the phone. In rare cases like a corrupted file in a directory you can't access and you don't want to out can't root your phone, then yes. The Verizon telephone service people (I don't like giving them a title...some are very good at what they do but...we won't go there) are famously guilty for using resets the magic portion that cures all ailments.
Anyways, the point that I was trying to make before going on that rant was those posts on the other forum was what prompted me to investigate battery concerns, because from what I thought, KitKat was supposed to improve on battery consumption by (no clue the accuracy that numbers as I don't have an official source) up to 20%.
On KitKat I've been getting around 5-6 hours of battery life. So far I'm at 37% battery left, with 4 hours and 17 minutes since being unplugged with an estimated 1 hour and 57 minutes left. Doesn't sound very good does it for the average G2 does it? Not until you realize screen on time has been 4 hours and 6 minutes, with my main activities being surfing forums and typing a LOT as well as some time dedicated to my favorite mobile game at the moment which also happens to use more battery than ant other game I've played...Avabel Online (IgN is Styrael if anyone plays - lvl 64 gunslinger)
I haven't run across anything out of the ordinary yet when it comes to battery life but kids still early. Sorry for the long post there, I think I'll get back to Avabel. I hope the 100% exp, jexp (job experience), and drop rare bonuses are still in effect.

My phone was a beast before 5.0 with huge battery life and flawless performance. Now it will hang on screens and the battery is starting to remind me of the S4 Has anyone been able to track down why the battery is draining faster since this update.

my phone is more of a beast after the 5.0 update.. so there is nothing to track down to me.. battery issues seem to be limited to certain ppl and not everyone.. lots are having amazing battery life.. if its not working for you then try installing kk again maybe?

Not my first cruise here. This phone never even glitched before the 5.0, not the same performance or battery since so there is something to track down.
Any change after a factory reset of your phone?
Same issue here after 5.0. Battery drain and phone overheats after a few minutes of use. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
It seems that I am having issues as well. I have tracked the problem down to something in google play services and exchange email sync. My phone battery settings page shows that my phone is always awake.... If I do a factory reset it no longer happens. But as soon as I enable my exchange email it starts to do the same thing. My phone turns in to a nice hand warmer because it gets hot in my pocket and dies in 5 hours or so. Try a factory reset and see if it still is giving you bad battery life.
When I do the factory reset and try to do a restore of all my apps I get the same problem. When I do not restore and set my apps up from scratch it seems to work well until I add exchange email. Ill do some more testing and report back.
I dont use any exchange service just Gmail accounts and they are not on active sync, I have to swipe to sync them. Call me lazy but I dont want to Factory Reset unless its proven that its going to fix it.
Locked up so bad today Had to pull the battery for the first time since I bought it in December
No way to guarantee a FDR will fix your phone. I can tell you that it fixed mine. Battery life was terrible and the phone would get so hot it would go into cool down mode. After a FDR everything is as it should be on 5.0. IMO people should FDR after any system updates as large as the Lollipop update just to make sure all the KK files and data are gone so there are no conflicts.
Amen to what newman said i would factory reset before complaining about problems. I haven't updated to 5.0 yet because i really don't see a reason to just yet but i would definitely factory reset for peace of mind if i did.
I did a factory reset twice and still same problem. Battery drains and overheats. I find it weird that some phones have the problem and some don't.
But it definitely is a problem and I don't really "complain". Some people just ask for help which I don't think is the same as complaining. Like Bobby, I've been doing this for a while. I've been rooting and jacking with android phones since the og Droid.

Yeah i probably shouldn't of said "complained" didn't mean to offend anyone so sorry. Just curious after you factory reset did you give it a few hours to see if the battery drained/overheated before restoring/installing apps or anything else?

No I have not done that but I will try that and see what it does.
I too was a Rom swapper in a previous life but dont have time these days to keep up and needed a rock solid daily driver so I stayed stock on this phone. Please let me know if the reset does fix the issues. I hate to reformat all my stuff again for nothing. What a shame though to fugg up a great phone like this, you would think by now they should have it figured out so this doesn't happen. Or at least leak it early so the rom chefs could have a chance to find the flaws before the release

How did you figure that out.
I played around with s health a bit after loading lolipop, and noticed thats when it heated up on my phone so I froze it in titanium backup, but didn't restart. Apparently the pedometer was still keeping track of the step because it was still running. Restarted the phone and haven't had the issue since.

Hi .. I am using moto x play for the last 20 days..
I updated Android 6.0.1 too.
My problem is battery drains fastly and heating while using internet. No such issues when turning off mobile data. 3g data making more such issues than 2g. I expected much battery while read reviews and bought moto xplay bcz of its additional superb features.. Someone please help me. Also I wana know is 2gb enough . am confused is it get hang when using more and more apps. I have expanded ma internal storage with 64gb.is it hang the device?Am not a game lover . pls help me ..
Have you tried resetting your phone to the factory settings? i know its a pain to do it but it might resolve the issue.
I'm also using a 64 gb memory card with my moto x play and have not faced any issue with that regard yet, so i'd definitely recommend resetting your phone to factory settings.
But.. I have the same problems before updating ma xplay... I have noticed it. So hw can resetting solve it ,?

it happens a lot of times, a hard reset resolves many problems. Specially when you do a major software update in my personal experience. I've always done a hard reset when i've done a major software update whether it was iphone or android. So its worth a shot, if that also doesn't resolve the issue then its definitely a hardware issue.
K..
Then can u please explain me what are the changes wil happen when resetting phone.
Android 6 degraded to 5 Na ?
Definitely ma phones speed and performance changes after updating to a6. Only battery draining and heating problem remaining. I expected more from these :3630mah battery.and never expected these much of heat from moto.

Your os version won't change on resetting the device. It would delete all the apps installed. Do move the data from internal to external though.
I didn't had any heating problem with this phone. Little bit warm under normal conditions is normal.
That 3630 mAh of battery has to provide energy to a battery sipping processor and a battery hungry big screen, so don't expect miracles. ?

yes exactly, the phone does get a bit warm when i connect turbo charger but that is obviously going to happen to any phone after connecting a turbo charger and i've been getting battery life of almost 24 hours on my moto x play with 3g and location on all the time. I dont play any games though.
Thank for ur valuable information.

so i have an unlocked LG V20 that i have been using for a while. sometime back the battery began to bloat am in Ghana so paid for one from US and a friend brought it to me since I was not getting one locally. before the new battery (ipossible 10800mAh) could reach me the phone started to slow down significantly (at this point i thought it was the spoiled battery that was causing it) so i stopped using it altogether. now i have the new battery which lasts very long, but the problem has not stopped, in fact it has become worse overtime. this is what happens. the phone will be on, calls, messages, notifications and everything comes but the display is EXCESSIVELY SLOW, like a PC with a small graphics memory, that been said i must also say this, the processing capacity is not affected but that does not make any difference. i can use the phone if i know where to touch on the screen but the display will come on or respond when it wants to (like it needs some pizza before it does ). I really need help. it cost me so much to get this phone and i cannot afford another one anytime soon so any help in any form is needed and will be much appreciated.
PS:
- there is no change when I power cycle
- there is no change when i take the sim card and or external memory out or put it in
- there is no change when i turn on/off the data, connect or disconnect WiFi
thank you
