Some questions about this phone - Xperia Z4/Z3+ General

Hey guys, i recently lost my iphone x and have to make do with my next favorite company, Sony. Yes i have a long bond with sony products.
Question 1: Whats the best firmware on this phone? I heard nougat disables some cored and i have seen it firs hand since I am on nougat that the cores are inactive and not working even under stress.
Question 2: Do I have to back up drm keys on this phone if i wana use a custom rom(Not that there are any good ones)? I am aware they use drm partition on sony phones and stuff.
Question 3: Is the heating issue really this bad? My phone gets really hot and so do others but does nougat make it better or worse?
I know performance will no where be the same but I really love sony phones and I love this phone just need the right firmware

Q1:for gaming activities android 6 is best.
Q2.xz3plus has a custom kernel that it has drm fix(it doesnt back your orginal drm. It likes a fake drm.)its better you have a backup.
Q3:it's depends on what you do with your phone.
Social media- wep surfing and multi media like music and.... It doesnt annoying you but for gaming activities it makes you aggressive.
I suggest you flash the last firmware by flashtools.it cans fix many problems and wait for another awnsers

It's not at all a gaming friendly phone, u must have realized it by now. So better use it for just communication & social media purpose. Its a **** block of fire with poor developer support.
But still if u wanna play, then better use stock firmware. Every custom rom(with custom kernel) will surely lower down the heat but then u won't be able to play.so choice is urs.

I am actually pleasantly surprised. The phone performs pretty well for 2018 standards, ya its fiery hot and unbearable when gaming, but i dont game that often normal day to day use is great. Only thing I am disappointed in is the battery, it drains like crazy, then again its a 20nanomeer chip sucking the battery dry

Can we expect more roms anytime soon?

I would love to see more roms and for this beautiful piece of hardware

Honestly, I'd like to see some kernel development.
And now I feel like a jerk. :/
Yeah I'm patiently waiting but there's not a lot of action going on. We need more devs on board to help each other out. Wish I could code to help.
Losing the stock apps is a problem for most people that bought this tablet though
If I ever get the time (unlikely...) I might take a crack at Omni.
I'm kind of waiting to see how the new Nexus rumors pan out. If the next Nexus tablet has a K1, that'll make Android L a lot easier.
There's also, as some people said, the fact that there are quite a lot of stock features of the device that are actually quite nice. There's also the fact that the stock firmware is quite clean, reducing the need to tweak it.
Some of the stock apps really don't want to play nicely, I've tried installing the controller app though adb with necessary lib for the controller recently but had an issue with an incompatible user. I looked through the file that has all of that info Haven't had a ton of time to flip between stock/cm and progress any more than that.

Tbh, I think we're lucky to have the roms that are currently being developed. The SHIELD isn't exactly the most popular tablet and with the Nexus coming everyones gonna jump on that. The roms we have now are pretty darn decent and the dev's are doin good work. We shouldn't rush them or ask more from them, and the tablets still fairly new. I'm sure by the end of the year we'll have plenty of things to play with, hopefully a good kernel as well!
What ROM's are you interested in?
Close to stock but ability to over clock, some more mods, improvement in audio. Maybe a way to improve GPU performance.

Spot on.
I'd love to be able to use themes too, but that means a fully working CM on top of all that.
I don't think it's going to happen

The CM port is pretty darn close to perfect aside from Touch not working after a few hours being locked.
It would be great for someone to make a really customizable ROM for this tablet... but for some reason I just don't see it happening

Close but no cigar!
None of the Nvidia apps work, and I'm guessing that's why most people even got this tablet!
Just encountered the freeze on the latest Carbon too.

In truth, my Droid MAXX has ruined me for ROMS because it's basically stock.
If we could get like an optimized kernel with over clock, I would be super happy.
Now that I've been that guy, I just want to say thank you for the recoveries and all your work. It's super awesome.

That's a problem even on stock.
There's a slight chance I might take a crack at a kernel with some small fixes (such as my micro idle accounting patch for conservative...), but I can assure you, you'll never see overclock coming from me. Current devices are all thermally limited as it is, overclock is pointless, it just makes you hit the thermal barriers faster. It's also the #1 reason why many OEMs try to voice your warranty the moment you unlock the bootloader.

Have to agree too. Overclocking is pointless. Last time I needed it was for my S2 years ago.
I'm buying the controller this weekend and reverting to a stock ROM, I'm guessing at this point I'm in the same position as most owners where unless stock apps can run on AOSP ROMs, I'll be sticking with stock.
Which means my only want then would be a nicely optimised stock ROM, maybe a theme or two and a tweakable (not overclocking) kernel.
And before anyone says it, I do not EXPECT this or demand this, it'd just be nice

You guys are the experts! I'll be happy with whatever I can get.
I just hope that either Nvidia will support the device for a LONG time or we can have some devs that keep supporting the device long into the future. Just in case you guys havnt heard it, Nvidia have said that this device defiantly will be getting android L.
Am I the only one whose gps does not work on custom Roms?!?!!!! All of em gmaps says no gps hardware found. I could probably live with the screen touch issue if GPS worked. Need it for Ingress ?

I just turn off the lockscreen and use Attentive for my lockscreen and I never have that issue. lol.
I agree as well Overclocking is really pointless. A kernel with fastcharge would be nice though.

share your experience to help me tranfer from ios

hello dear xda community!
it has been a while since i was last here.
i owned a gs2 but made the move to ios with iphone 5 and currently use iphone 6.
I am considering buying note 4 (c variant with exynos)!mostly for the great screen ,battery life and not overheating( almost all other androids can cook your hand)
i lurked around here to do some digging and i keep seeing members having big problems with battery drains, overheating and slow down...( i will be skipping on note 5 as it will not come to europe and mostly because of no removable battery-micro sd)
have i missed something? is the big res scree bogging down the phone?
owning an iphone, performance is a given for me.
Please share your honest views since you own the device and help me make the move!
got sick of same damn thing and restrictions (ios)
My best advice to you would be stick with iOS. I own Note 4. Previously owned lots of flagship android phones and before that iPhone 3GS, 4S and 5S. I will shift to 6S when it will be available in my country because I am tired of bloated SW solutions from big firms and sick of flashing custom roms that almost never match the performanco of camera with stock. iOS is still the best SW you can get and I will stick with it for a while.
Regarding android IMHO Note 4 is the best you can hope taking other 2015 flahships in mind that are not worth the upgrade specialy with SD 810, no microSD and non-replacable battery that is getting smaller and smaller despite constant *****ing about it's insufficiencuy. With latest 5.1.1 it is realy fast, takes great pictures and battery life is awsome. I have no problems with it and till now it is as close to iOS experience as it gets.

For the OP!
Stick whit IOS my friend ....
My 910f is realy awsome whit 5.1.1, no overheat, no lag and superb battery, but ios much much better in stabiliti and before android 5.1.1 it has better performance.
you see, the thing is..what made me consider moving was the hideous battery life (iphone battery is epic bad-like..bards would sing of its loussiness).
and couple more every day stuff that really halt your schedule( try attaching two different file types-say 1 xls+1pdf on same mail in ios)
i guess i was hoping that it would be better with note 4, but from what you guys say it lacks stability on a very profound level..

hi ,
i guess there always 2 sides to a story . ?
I have a Note2 , Note3, and ... Note4 ( ........cannot say anything much, about Note5 ..!!)
All my devices battery ( removable ) life is good/acceptable , no overheating , smooth running and customized to my liking !!!!!! This is what i want and enjoying it .!!
I do not own a Iphone and thus cannot say much about it .!!
(Yes ,i have "played around " a few times ,with a Iphone in the phone shops and know its overall feel and workings )
Everytime i just put it down and say no i am happy with my Note4 .
All i can say is , in the end it is "what you want from your device...its you choice ."
So is it an an option ..... to have/own both ?
i want freedom of choice, ( customize etc ) and cannot see myself been tied down .
My message is only ,there nothing "wrong " with Note4
Hardware ,specs , removable battery and to do real multitasking on a device ? ...etc
Also i am on Android v 5.1.1 and device working very, very smooth .No issues .
However i have noticed some forum members have /had certain issues
good luck with your choice .
post entry
my observation of reading post and " my opinion" ,
regarding battery drainage in Note 4 is that a some members have either
3rd party apps or wrong settings or some" mod/theme " on phone responsible for this ( yes, i know not always ) eg facebook, whatsapp , gps location enable ,data always on ,etc... in some setting etc ( battery drainers ) or just badly coded apps or games .sucking away on battery.I had Note4 since October 2014 and had odd battery drain and always ( when investigating ) found 3rd party app or mod eg Xposed framework or module etc responsible for this .
Bottom line ,
is you only read mostly in threads, when members have a "problem " and hardly read post of members that is happy with performance/etc of device ?
good..this is what i want to hear..opinions based on real owner experiences!
just one more question!
is it true that since knox , i cannot root the device without it being permanently recorded? i mean, i remember being to erase such things on gs2 with stuff like triangle away app.. i dont care for flashing roms, rather than using my paid titanium app, adaway, root explorer and be able to freeze bloatware.

hi,
yes, thats overall true eg. if you use dev @ chainfire CF auto root it will trip Knox.(this CF auto root method, is what i used overall. except in Android v5.1.1 it does not work so i used another method ) However you do get certain root
methods that won't trip Knox.
Don't ask me what method as i really was never interested in rooting this way.
My personal opinion of Knox is.. i see it as a "bogey man" it does not worry me as i got no interest in Knox features. .. or the attitude... "o what is Samsung warranty going to say.?"
That said...
I do however respect other members view on Knox.!
I wanted to enjoy my user experience and rooted my device way back in October 2014... never looked back.
My viewpoint is,
If something "happens" well then it "happens" an i will deal with it accordingly or get another device.
I just wanted you to get my viewpoint over, that overall Note4 is a very, very capable device..good at multi tasking, good battery use (overall) no overheating issues and very smooth and fast (just tweak right)
Good luck with your choice
to be honest as long as it works and battery performs , i am happy camper..i am familiar with androids plus and minuses..
I wouldn't get it now. On its stock rom the dpi is way too high, everything is so big on the screen and there is no added real estate from a phone such as the S6. As for performance I've never been happy (N910F) until 5.1, but on 5.1 I can't use per app dpi. Do not throw your money at Samsung, opt for a Moto (or even the new Sony Z5 series), they're much more consistent performers. You could even wait for the new Nexus 5 or 6 coming out next month which will have biometric sensors. The one on the Note 4 sucks haha.
If you want to use the Samsung apps then stay with Touchwiz and root it, I would currently recommend using this ROM
I know you said that you are not into flashing ROMs but I would recommend that you give CM a chance or if you want extra personalization then try other custom roms.

i'd have no problem with flashing but custom roms never really get the camera app right or work well with ril files etc..
CM is very far from my taste although it has a sink ful of features.
i am almost set with giving up the iphone 6 for note 4.
just gonna wait till ios 9 gets previewed on wensday.
cant wait for a note 4 like battery, coming from i6.

[Q] New Samsung Note 4 owner, things I should know?

HI all.
I'm a new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 owner! Recently upgraded from a Note 3. Phones are years old but are decently priced and still good phones when you're not looking for something too fancy.
Honestly, the Note 3 was the best phone I've ever had and was looking forward to a Note 4 upgrade (was looking forward to the fingerprint scanner, even if not the best, and to the metal edges)
Now, I'd just like to ask for a few pointers on this device. Any custom ROM suggestions? Anything I should know about?
I am doing my fair share of research, I've been reading a lot of posts regarding this device, posts that are months old, posts that are years old and I've gotten myself a general idea of what to expect.
But I think even with all this reading, I probably won't be able to compare what I learn from these posts to someone that has owned a Note 4 for months, possibly years! Which is why I'm posting this thread, to ask those who have had this device for a longer time and will probably continue to use it for a longer time since this phone is amazing!
I just want to ask you Note 4 owners, if you bought a brand new Note 4, what set-up will you prefer? Custom ROM? Stock ROM? Any kernels you would flash?
I know the best ROM will always be stock ROM, but is there any worth-while N7 ports for the Note 4? I'm a big fan of the off-screen memo, the smart screen capture (scroll and screen-recording that records gifs) and also enjoy tweaking the kernel (overclock) for smoother game performance. I've also read that the most common problem with ports is the fingerprint scanner. I'll probably end up doing the work-around since no custom ROM has gotten this fixed (from what I read it's almost impossible without leaving a lot of the stock ROM's assets which defeat the point of a custom ROM).
Currently, I am downloading stock EQI2 6.0.1 which is the latest firmware for the N910T variant. I know that the T-Mobile variant has it's own forum but I usually see that the "Samsung Galaxy Note 4" thread is the most active and sometimes includes things for the T-Mobile variant (was the same case with the Note 3, the T-Mobile forum was dead and the international forum was alive and well)
It's running 5.0.1 software right now, hopefully 6.0.1 is better.
Thank you for your time!
I kindly invite you to try the unified trlte build linked in the [ROM] [UNOFFICIAL] [7.1.2] LineageOS 14.1 [SM-N910F/G/P/R4/T/T3/V/W8] thread.

Thanks for your input, I am currently trying out a Note 7 ROM port, but if it doesn't work out I will try it out
Personally, I prefer to run the stock OS that comes pre-installed on my device and update the OS to the latest version provided by the manufacturer. As I know for a fact that Custom 3rd Party OSs do not have the best post imaging software. Which hinders the performance of the camera sensor on your device.

Been snooping around and messing with a couple of custom ROM's either with Note 7/8 features and S7 Edge/S8.
I really like the look overall to the stock Note 4 UI, but I seem to have a very bad luck with random reboots and some features missing (fingerprint) or not working (night clock).
I was really afraid my phone was doomed with the eMMC failure I keep reading about that plagued the Note 4, but I don't have any problems running stock.
Yup, I guess my motto came true. "The best ROM is always STOCK ROM", even if it looks a bit out-dated.
I'm currently running stock and a custom kernel I found for stock MM. I'm pleased with the results so far, just kind of wish I could boot straight in to camera with double HOME press
Best advice I can give you , owning the phone for 2,5 years, is to never use quick charge and never update the phone or flash custom roms while the phone is being charged.

Do a quick search and read about the motherboard Emmc problem on a lot of Note 4s.

I did read about it, I just wasn't sure what was the root cause for it. So I guess fast charge is the culprit? Every place I read this people seemed to blame an update either from KK to LL, or from LL to MM. Wow... I gotta think about this one. One of the reasons I love this phone over my Note 3 is because of the quick charge. Man :/
Gotta think about trading that feature in for... you know... a FUNCTIONAL PHONE

IMO the culprit was a heavy update(eg. from lollipop to Marshmallow) being installed , while the phone was pluged in being quickcharged.
This pushed the temperatures to exceed the max threshold of a bad emmc solder on the motherboard on some specific batches of the note 4.

So you think regular quick charge should be fine? The phone doesn't heat up with regular quick charge, so I really hope it's safe. I know that just to be safe, I shouldn't use quick charge. But I guess I'll roll the dice.
I updated from LL to MM via Odin, so it wasn't quick charging :victory:

In my case , my phone gets really warm while being quickcharged even if I am not using it at all.
I live in a warm place though!
If you want to use quickcharge , I suggest you go ahead and use it but without using the phone during the charge.

I have an exynos version so can't tell you much about the snapdragon versions (also never heard of emmc problems on exynos devices, the only problem I have is IR blaster stopped working some update ago and never worked again since), but here's little general advice :
Stock ROM is perfectly reliable and very smooth with little customization :
I recommend a package disabler app like EZ disabler to get rid of bloat. I disable anything that doesn't have a clear use for me . If something breaks functionality I enable it back.
If you don't want to root you can use adhel to block ads in very efficient way .
If you do want to root I recommend magisk . It's the best way to do it because if anything goes wrong you can just uninstall it and everything is fine again , it doesn't affect system partition.
Also system less xposed works great if you use the proper version . I love youtube background mod.
In my experience you should never use apps that claim to save battery like amplify/greenify etc . (In some cases they drain the battery even faster with their continuous background services) The better way to save power is to not install power hungry apps in the first place or disable them with EZ disabler . Also disable animations and just disable functions when you don't use them : Sync/Location /Bluetooth etc .
Last but not least : download and use Samsung game booster : it's amazing for our old gpus : you can lower resolution/frame rates to make games more playable and battery last longer .
These were my quick tips . Hope you enjoy your new phone !

The only small problem I have with stock is that it looks outdated. I know visuals are the least you should look for in a ROM, should be more worried about stability and battery life, but I simply can't deny that visually, stock TW UI bothers me.
But I guess I'll have to get used to it anyway since all the ROMs I've tried have issues here and there, but most importantly I get random shut downs and reboots with most custom ROMs and I lose the fingerprint scanner.
As for games, I heavily play a game called Shadowgun Deadzone. It's not that graphics heavy, but I need it to run smooth. I haven't tried Samsung's game booster, I've only messed around with custom kernels and changing the CPU governor, overclocking, etc... and it runs fine for a little while, but starts chugging after a few minutes in.
If the game booster can fix this, heck I can stick with stock ROM without any problems.
When you say it looks outdated
Are you talking about the launcher?
If so why not try the many other launchers out there? Like nova launcher..

A launcher can only do so much. I'm referring to mostly on things like the notification drawer, the settings and stuff like that.

Gaming performance really, REALLY bad

I've had this phone before the Oreo update. Antutu V6 showed super smooth graphics... that apparently don't translate into real-world usage.
For this example I'll talk about Real Racing 3, but it goes for any game.
On Nougat it would have this bug where it would run at about 40fps, then when I paused and resumed the race, it would be at a smooth 60fps for about 2 seconds. Thought the Oreo update would allow 60fps all the time like I know it should do.
I downloaded Real Racing 3 again after months, and now on default settings, at 1080p, I get about 15-25fps constantly. Pausing and resuming doesn't help any more.
So this game and many others that I used to love and play at a decent framerate on my previous phone, which had adreno 330 graphics, look almost unplayably horrid. Even skips frames on games like Color Switch which runs without a hitch on my brother's Moto C.
It's seriously worse than I would expect even a $200 device to be! And this phone cost $650 at release?!
Anyone else had these issues? Has anyone solved this for themselves?
Thanks.
I was having the same issue. If you have updated by OTA then flash the rom again using LGUP & do a factory reset using keys.I was getting heavy lag on MCVS,PUBG & heat issue almost same as yours. My issue is gone now. Also don't forget to turn off break time on Oreo in game center.
Look how smooth it runs now while screen recorder is on at 2k.

Might try this, thanks.
What are any major places where flashing the firmware could go wrong, and does the device need to be rooted? Thanks again!
Thats why i never play mobile Crap Games on a Phone, i dont like to charge again after 2 Hours.
Buy a Computer or Playstation, this is just a much better feeling, than those mobile Crap with tons of Ads.

I'm a PC gamer as well. Unfortunately I can't take my rig with me to places and use it on the bus or whatever, and there are no PC versions of most of the games I play and enjoy on the phone. We don't need posts like this, thanks.
Anyway, I think it must partly be optimisation because CSR2 is running smoothly.
Edit: sometimes

I want to see you sitting in the Bus with your Rig and playing Battlefield with Online Connection over the LG. I think it will melt down :silly:

Also, why should I reflash the ROM as well as factory resetting? Thanks.

I solved it by deleting all the games off my phone and downloading steam on my PC

Thanks would be really helpful for when I can afford a reasonable decent gaming PC!

For All The People Who Faces Lag in Games or Generally using the device!

Today I found something interesting happened to my phone it was running buttery smooth like it should be (821), and most of all the game i play everyday wasnt lagging at all, PUBG
Solution: DO NOT USE SMART CLEANING app or any other kind of it, your phone will start running smooth in next 3 4 days or maybe less.
Try this and share me your experiences.
Comment to let me know you're trying this.
Thanks. I'll give it a try and see if it makes a difference, because the amount of lag I experience while playing Cytus II is unbearably bad and makes the game nearly unplayable.
So dont use anything at all and itll work smooth? ok ill try that
Hi
Are you referring to the Smart Doctor build in app?
Did you disable or uninstall it?
It's been 3 days and I've reached a verdict. Doing as the OP said actually made games run better. By that, I mean I disabled Smart Cleaning via LG Package Disabler and deleted Google Files Go.
I'm not kidding about this helping. Cytus II is playable now at full 1440p 60fps, with very few lagspikes. Other games I've played, like Alto's Odyssey, run somewhat better as well.
Go try it out yourself, it may help a lot!

The name is "Smart Cleaning" app. No disable/uninstall, I'm just not using it that's it. You can disable/uninstall it if you want.

After a factory reset a couple days ago the antutu graphics benchmark got noticeably choppier, especially the "marooned" scene which was previously completely fluid. That was a disappointment since that was one of the reasons for going through that process! I've now removed Google files go and I will see if that makes a difference, I hope it does. If so, thank you in advance.
Btw I think you meant "1440p" (QHD) not "2160p", that's 4k! ?

Yeah, that's right. Thanks for pointing that out!
This is serious guys, I deleted Smart Cleaning by ADB and my gaming experience increase magically, Shadowgun Legends can run quite good with Ultra high 60fps setting, it couldn't do that before. Unbelievable
PS: Tested only with latest Android 7.0
I have zero lag and i use smart doctor every other day.
Matt.

Well, two weeks from when i see this thread and i stop using SmartDoctor / SmartCleaning app, just to say, this guy is right, using SmartDoctor / SmartCleaning app will (somehow, and i dont know how and why) make you phone laggy and in my tests if i open it like between 2 or 3 days and make a clean all UI and the app frezzes and i need to wait almost 1 minute to phone get out of the app and all be OK again.
So, my test really gives reason to this guy and i will delete the app from the phone, and i recomend all people with rooted G6 to do the same and use CCleaner instead to clean cache from apps and so on...
to the guy who discover the guilty of the lag: i cant pay you a beer, but you will be my hero forever.
Not working for me unfortunately... Still quite a bit of lag playing heavier games like csr2, Rr3 (practically unplayable), hungry shark world ?
I've had the phone since September last year and I don't think I've used it for more than 10 times. It lags anyway. Lowering the resolution does wonders, but it has some bugs that I don't like so I've switched back to lag.

If you are rooted, I highly recommend installing the new Adreno 530 driver, there is a decent improvement in games and definitely in Antutu...
does this stil work as of now?
This reads like bull****. What is "smart cleaning"? Is it supposed to be an app? The instructions are super unclear.
Smart Doctor cannot be disabled either. You can just disable it running in the background.
