Dear Friends and Community,
I recently acquired the S4 with moderate excitement. I already had a S3 and I was very happy with it but I had the option to get an S4 after extending one of our contracts so I went for it and gave my S3 to my wife - she's very happy with it now But i am not very happy with my S4 for 2 reasons:
- Extensive heat generation (36-47C) while surfing, watching videos, natigating calling etc.
- The heat seems to originate from the top portion of the phone on the back as well as the front side around the camera. it is uncomfortable to hold it against my hear on call
- My S3 did not heat up this much or this often. I also did not have any battery charge cliffs or jumps with my S3.
- As the device heats up, the battery drains INSANELY fast. Also I've noticed a disruptive and sudden battery discharge. As I charged my device for the frist time to 100% moments later the battery level jumped from for example 95% to 82% in one second. Is this due to battery calibration issues (because the device is new and the battery has not been charged many times yet) or is this something that can be considered a hardware flaw of the battery or device? I could be watching a video at medium brightness and my battery would go down by 1% each 2 minutes.
Sometimes during use and especially when it heats up some percentages are skipped while discharging (95%, 93%, 89% without sequencing down one by one but rather as 'chunks' of battery loss. ) did you exhibit similar behavior on your phone? Are these battery 'jumps' tied to the heat development?
And now the main questions: Should I return the device and exchange it against a new one or should I wait until Rom development or a patch tackles the problem ? I've already installed a recent OTA from Samsung and hoped the problem would vanish but no luck.
I'd be thrilled to hear your Opinions.
Best,
Thomas
Ive also noticed heating up and fast battery discharge, not one full day of normal usage, my s3 lasted at least 2 times longer. i hope it will pass as i finish 3 times battery charge discharge. for now im excited with camera quality and benchmarks scores i love this phone already, its still plastic but i dont care, with every phone i use silicon or other cases, for s4 i bought original samsung case with plastic back rounded by rubber.
In few days if overheating and fast discharge will not pass on its own i will flash firmware again with kies (repeir mode) and reset all settings.
I also experienced the same issue, its getting hot not warm while doing normal tasks... Dear Thomas u have see temp. in between 37 to 47 but my phone heats upto 55c while gaming... now my phone is with samsung service center, but i am not sure they will replace it with new one as their policy allows replacement only within seven days from the date of purchase and i bought it 27th April itself, just next day of launch. Now i am thinking that why the hell i rushed to buy it. i should have waited for user reviews...
And BTW flashing original firmware doesn't help. Because people at service center had done that and given my cell back to me, but that issue was still there so submitted it again to the service center.....
Are you guys getting these temperature readings using e.g. Battery temperature reading of Cool Tool?
My battery temperature as reported by cool tool never got above 40C but it felt quite hot to the touch already And I am not using any case on it...
I have a case arround it. I will play some games later to see where the temp peaks. but I think it will also be around 50 because it already gets pretty warm doing basic stuff like watching videos or using viber to call.
It feels like this is a problem for all S4's out there.
Check out this video at min 3:25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUx40kXZF5s (Steep drops in battery)
I really don't want to send in my device for no reason because I will most probably get a refurb or even a device with more problems.
I just want to know if other people have experienced similar issue.
You can check with the app called BatteryGraph and see if sometimes a few percent are skipped down the graph.
It would be great if someone did this for me
Same here with the heat. I undervolted -37,5mV and underclocked 300MHz, now everything is fine
Benchmarkscores are a little worse, but tbh, I really don't care. No current app or game is gonna use it anyway. Seems like a waste of battery life to keep the 1,9GHz clock speed.
Did the same with the Galaxy S2 I owned, which became quite hot too. Samsung has a tendency to overclock their chips just to outperform every other phone on the market, but the truth is, there is virtually no benefit in keeping the maxed clock speed in everyday use, other than doing benchmarks all the time ...
Hello guys,
I noticed much better improvement over battery life while in cold condition room,i charged my phone and I was surfing internet with wi-fi and location on for 2 hours, and it was on 99% after that 2 hours!
So I think asus developers should mostly work on decreasing of battery overheat...Phone was cold for the first time while using him for 2 hours and performed great in battery life...
I know this sounds stupid, but I think when batter overheats it drains quicker for sure.
Thank you!
If what you are saying is true, then people in cooler climates will report better battery performance. And MAYBE this will explain such disparity between users of same phone in regard to battery performance.
So at what temperature is the "air conditioner" set to?

Summer is in my country,so temperatures outside are like 35+ degrees...
Air conditioner in my room is set to 23,24 degrees, and phone works much better with that(it doesn't overheat like when i go outside)...i charged my phone almost 2 and a half hours ago and still 99% battery, tried to restart phone because i thought it's a bugg, but still 99% is there.
I live in Vegas haven't notice any problem with heat affecting cell phones and I use them outside when it's 110
I am thinking to buy moto G4 plus...
But what I am concerned about is the heating issue.
I had read some review where some says that during gaming it heats up.
I would like the users to please clarify this.
I just like the device too much.
If there is heating issue then its unusual or what.
When it heats and after how much of gaming does it starts heating and up to what temperature.
Someone who will answer these questions for me would be great.
I own G3 from moto and loved it and looking for an upgrade.
It's been a day since I have the device. Played some games and it's pretty much okay! I came from Moto X Play, and I'm gonna say it's way better than that. MXP heated like hell, reached 45-47 at times during some sessions of calls. And in gaming it went 51.
I played Real Racing 3 for an hour and so, and it was pretty okay to me. Warm, yes. Hot, no! The device definitely felt warm, but it was kinda okay to me! I don't game on my phone usually. But yes gaming drained my battery way way faster than I expected it.
If you are looking for an upgrade, I'd say go for it. It is way better than G3 and you will love it.
Good to read, as I plan to upgrade my G2 with the G4(plus). Heat is an issue with my G2, especialy when in the car, navigating and on the charger. Looks like it fried my gps. (The main reason to upgrade)

Brother, can u please give detailed info on the battery department? Battery is my main concern and that's why returned moto g turbo.
I need at least 5 to 6 hours of SoT with 3g switched on throughout the day. I'll be using FB, twitter, offline video playback, YouTube, extensive browsing whole day and an hour of gaming as well.
Will it last a day?

You need a 5-6hr SOT after having Facebook on phone? You must be kidding! 5-6hr sot is nearly impossible for a moto g. I think 4-5hrs is more adequate to predict.
Though its early for me to say about battery! I'm gonna post some screenshots by Monday of my usage cycles.

Alright, I'll wait till Monday. But what's wrong with FB app? I use it on my moto e and haven't had any problem with it. With the same usage I mentioned earlier, moto e seems to do excellent job. 5 1/2 to 6 hours of SOT is norm.

For once try uninstalling the Facebook Family Apps (Fb, Messenger, Groups, or Pages) and then note the changes. Facebook apps tend to have wakelocks and alarms that are way too frequent.

Due to G4P not having a magnetic sensor, you gonna have this issue on G4P. It is gonna use mobile data to know your orientation. I'm not gonna judge though. I don't know yet. Still have to test it. :good:

Ehm... My gps got fried (literally) by heat buildup while navigating in the car and charging at the same time. Now when it's in the car and charging, the hps drops away from time to time. As this thread was started by the OP asking about heating issues, I got curious of the G4 has the same issue as I experienced with the G2. I don't see the link with the magnetic sensor, unless that sensor is producing heat..

The absence of the sensor will trigger the modem (using data/wifi) which will eventually cause the device to heat up!

Even with data and wifi already on? I'll try with the device only setting instead of high accuracy. Could save the G4+ from getting fried.
Moto G4 Plus getting heated while charging to 48-50 Degree. Room temp is about 25-27 degree.
No 3rd party app is installed till now.
Seems unusual, should i go for replacement ??
Look budy if you use mobile while charging is not right........

Hi Avneet,
I am also looking to buy G4plus 32gb ver. for my cousin, but yesterday flipkrt droped price of xplay, so thinking should i consider that option or still go for G4plus. Camera and battery is plus for MXP.

Yea! You could go for it. If you wish! Camera is a big plus. Battery too. But only if you stay on the stock rom! I was using CM13. And i went from 6-7hr sot to 4-5 hr sot with excessive heating on long browser sessions.
Laser focus, fingerprint sensor, gyroscope and 3GB of ram made me buy MG4P. All of these are missing on the MXP.

yes, thats plus for G4P and processer and ram are plus here as well.
NFC part in MXP is plus too i think so, usage would be moderate as far i think, gaming and normal usage...
Just want to mention that there are already a few threads on lenovo forum about heating issues
expect them to grow in number when the phone is released in the states (I think india and brazil useres are realtively less post on english forums)
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-G-13MP-16MP-Plus/bd-p/MotoG4thGen
every device heats if you put up it in extensive use without heat dissipation.
well about g4 plus all i can say is that it is a cool device in every terms except battery should be 3300 Mah but i am still getting about 8 hr of sot in 1 recharge cycle.(if you play games then it will last about 4 hrs of sot) & turbo charger supplied with it is also very good, it charges first 80 % in 60 (phone temp would be around 43 -44 degree while turbo charging then it drops to below 40 degree or depending on ambient temperature )minutes then remaining 20 % is charged with normal way in 40 min or so.
here are some game play screenshots for your convenience to check temperature:-
(all games were in highest settings)
1. game= rayark implosion
ambient temp = 36 degree
maximum phone temperature during game play = 39 degree
game 2 :- real racing 3
max temp :- 38
game 3:- marvels champion
max temp:- 38 degree
i didn't find any over heating
but if you play intensive games where ambient temp is 45 degree it is bound to get hot.
tip:- while playing game or charging via turbo charger remove protective back case(if you have one.)
turbo charging takes exactly 100 min to full charge
0 to 80% in 60 min my phone temp was 42-44 degree.
80 to 100 % in last 40 min temp drops below 38 degree automatically.
hope this helps
It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the ASUS ROG Phone 3 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I was able to get around 1.5 days of continuous usage, between heavy gaming, regular gaming, web browsing, movie watching and some mails. Very pleased with the overall stamina.
My first "full" day with the ROG 3 (coming from ROG 2) Running mostly at Auto/120hz. Even did some heavy benchmarking with Antutu and Geekbench. Quite happy with SOT/battery life so far
Rooted with Kirisakura kernel, latest update
My second day with the ROG 3. Just amazing SOT Love this phone
I dont know what I am doing wrong though, but my SOT seems significantly less.
Epic battery life!! Best I've ever used.
Awesome battery life on this phone Here using 90Hz/60Hz (Using tasker to switch to 60hz when watching YouTube etc.) Also using Kirisakura kernel, clocked down CPU and GPU.
2nd and third pic is down to 35%. Used 120Hz from 50%
Just an update on last post:
13h SOT over 2 days (48h) is just amazing. Used 90hz first 50%, 120hz the rest

Hey! Sorry for my best English, i' m writing with the help of google translator . I wanted to consult with you about SOT Rog Phone 3 vs SOT ROG II. I want to buy RG3, but I'm worried that it will hold less charge than my current smartphone. This issue is very important to me, i'm literally obsessed =)
My use case: 60HZ, 30% screen light, YouTube, Telegram is constantly used.
In your opinion, who has a more durable battery? Attached screenshot Rog Phone II SOT (without root and using only the built-in capabilities to disable the background work of applications)

Oh... The day before yesterday I bought a used cell Rog Phone 3. Before buying, I made sure that the battery is in good condition, at least I want to believe it. Attached a screenshot of the remaining battery capacity from Aida64.
Unfortunately, my SOT results were much less than yours, and even those I received from Rog Phone 2.
60 HZ, 30% screen light, dark theme... Could you please tell me what needs to be tweaked to at least get close to your SOT?

Hi!
That SOT seems be great, about the same as me trough a normal day. I only get that very high SOT when watching YouTube or movies a lot. If you want to tweak the phone as me, you will have to root it. Not a big difference, but it helps.
First be sure that your phone is updated to latest version, and if you have updated, do a factory reset

I attach the second test. the day is completely on the mobile internet. 2 hours of Skype conversations. do you think the phone is OK with SOT?
Honestly, I was expecting 13-15 hours on a daily non-gaming use. Rog II gave it to me. ROG III disappointed me.

Hi,
Yeah, that seems a bit low.. Might be due to Skype, if you used camera it drains more battery.. If you got 13-15h SOT on your Rog 2 with the same usage, it is very bad in comparison.. Too bad you are disappointed with your ROG 3.. Maybe a factory reset might help?
I ve been using my ROG 3 for a month, didnt charge it above 100% usually, i did once to check real battery mAh, which is like 5700mAh(wtf)
Now i get this **** on screen time..
Please advise.
*Edit
The screen on time is mostly related to the apps you use, the games i play are performance demanding, which makes the battery drain faster.
S' all good in the end.

I've had this phone 2 days and so far I've had 6 hours 31 minutes of screen time and I have 58 percent battery left. This is mostly YouTube, Web browsing, an hour of downloading apps from play store and a bit of emulation (ppsspp) am extremely impressed with the battery life on this phone.
Battery lasts more than 2 days at Medium Power Saving mode with moderate apps usage(no gaming but with youtube, magic fluid live wallpaper, whatsapp, browsing) and SOT approx 13+ hours in these two days. At the end of second day battery remains at 30-35%.

To come back on it, I have it since today and so far it's looking like the G8 Power has better or equal batterylife, standby drain is somehow bad on the M51, I checked all apps. Still I'll let the software settle and get through more cycles and check Gsam Battery Monitor in a couple of days again.
I honestly blame Samsung's other apps that aren't used and aren't able to be disabled or uninstalled.
Hi guys. I wanted to let you know my findings and provide some test results of galaxy m51 battery life. Firstly, I will outline what was my priority for that test. I wanted to check how long the phone can last mainly on google maps navigation with additional apps in the background. Also this test is a bit static so to speak but had no chance travelling for so many hours. That said I believe SOT was tested correctly for my planned usage. I guess in a real case scenario, I would need to do some more browsing and perhaps occasional screen switch offs during a break like filling up the fuel or stop to rest on a bicycle.
How I performed my test.
1. I did some initial installations, downloaded my apps and logged in to social apps such as FB, Spotify so they can work in the background, send notifications etc.
2. Once I completed the setup, I charged the very new phone to 100%. AccuBatter reported capacity was 6800mAh designed capacity not 7000mAh and estimated capacity 6700mAh.
3. CPU-Z reported Snapdragon 730 so I regret it is not 730G and honestly I do not know how to check with online stores as the packaging does not help with this. Also, I plan to test POCO F2 PRO 8gb ram/256gb version the same way and see how it goes since I get better hardware, but I like SD card slot on galaxy m51. Very useful when resetting the phone.
4. Set google maps navigation, lunched another app which uses GPS and LTE for maps showing speed cameras, road works or dangers which I use alongside with google maps. I also start shuffle play on Spotify to imitate streaming the music in my car or on the bike.
5. WiFi, LTE, GPS, Bluetooth, sync was enabled, blue light filter enabled.
6. Between 15-20 apps were in the background.
7. I unplugged the device from the mains.
8. Initial 15% discharge was with a WiFi connection with my router. Then switched of my router for overnight, left wifi enabled on Samsung but it had to continue downloading data over LTE such as Spotify music streaming. I also changed google map setting to day light only to avoid night backlight.
9. I went to bed? and in the morning there was still a lot of juice.
10. Around 20% discharge I took about 100 pictures most of them in burst mode to simulate a trip where you simply stop and take some snaps.
11. I stopped the test at 1% discharge and noticed no heating problem. The phone was cool during the test.
The overall SOT measured until 1% discharge was a staggering 17h 50m? Below you will find AccuBattery screenshots. At remaining 15% I had still over 2 h 42 m of use left.
This phone reminded me of good, old days of my Samsung galaxy s3 with a Zerolemon 7000mAh?
Now with my galaxy s7 deteriorating battery (current capacity just over 2300mAh) this is a great thing. For Galaxy s7 I also own a KiwiBird powerbank case of 5400mAh right from the beginning wich did its job when away from the mains, travelling etc.
I guess for a more accurate SOT, I would need to add some phone calls and browsing but even with I deduct 2h, it is still nearly 16 h of use. Like for me excellent. I also do not plan gaming.
On the downside of this phone it seems like my galaxy s7 takes a bit better picture, but it just might be my perception of selfies taken. Back camera is also just ok on a cloudy day. Ok but that is an offtopic.
I got my M51 yesterday and I am not fully sure yet about battery lifetime. I have charged it to 100% and about 8 hours and 2.5 hours secreen time later I am at about 90%.
Coming from my Moto Z Play I am not sure yet if I stay with the galaxy. The Mot Z Play with Incipio OffGrid Wireless Power Pack mod is about the same size and weight. Though provides less capacity (3300mAh phone + 2200mAh power mod) but battery lifetime still was bout 3-4 days usually.
The M51 is also getting considerably warmer during use.
I noticed also the Samsung battery saver with medium settings can reduce the CPU clock to max out at 70% which is handy. Not sure if there is any undervolting, underclocking tools as I think I would be perfectly fine with less performance - actually I was able to reach insane battery life on my old Galaxy P1000 with TricksterMod and custom undervolting back in the days.
I still believe better lifetime with the M51 would be possible bz reducing CPU clock and also with better screen brightness control. I noticed many times already that the M51 screen was too bright for me and having to reduce the slider to "minimum" position or very close to it. Also I noticed that the screen brightness slider is not linear at all. So on the last notch on the left side the screen really starts to dim properly while to the right there isn't much change. Also I like still to use automatic screen brightness adjustments but found the automatic adjustment often moves the brightness too high.
Also a possibility to limit the used screen area (e.g. display black bar on bottom/top) would save energy on the AMOLED screen while still providing more than enough screen space.
EDIT: One-Handed mode sort of provides this feature, but not exactly what I was looking for (like cinema-bars on top and bottom and no prominent "one-handed-mode" title.
I will continue to use the M51 for a couple of charges and decide if I am going to trade it again. The phone itself is performing well, supporting VoLTE WiFi calling but seems to lack carrier aggregation for no apparent reason. I strongly dislike the slippery, fingerprint-attracting, cheap-looking plastic backside of it.
I also hate that everywhere you tap it tries to sign up to a Samsung account. Also replaced the launcher with Nova launcher.
Below is the answer to almost all above useless posts

Why I say useless ?
Simply. SOT will be completely different when you read ebooks compared when you watch movies or browse Internet.
Gsmarena does standarised comparison
I am fan of long life battery phones. I used "king" Lenovo P2 for over 2 years. M51 is better.
