MOD EDIT - REPORTED FOUL LANGUAGE REMOVED
It would appear, ambiently, that other Android handsets have some forms of support for Divx + Xvid - I say ambiently as this is from perusing Engadet, Pocket Lint etc etc I have also seen various threads looking at porting WM tools and attempting to address what I consider to be a major shortfall of Android so far, at least where HTC handsets are concerned. I, like many many others, have a major collection of Films using Xvid and Divx, with many using AC3 as the Audio codec. The 'solution' so far has been for wise individuals to point out the blindingly obvious and to convert using Handbrake, Xilisoft etc Here's the thing - why should I have to ? To me, it's tantamount to saying 'Just re-encode all your MP3's - it took me ages to rip them from CD, get the metatags correct, album art etc - no way !! Also, MPEG4 is rubbish - I've never liked it.
As an open slate, from an Applications point of view (can't stand this crApple use of the term 'Apps') the Hero is very good - the music player is so so - acceptable I guess. As a gaming platform, it looks to be improving with underlying code and SDK support improving all the time - yet there is this gaping hole in its multimedia 'arsenal' - that of movie support. I can't be the only one who sees this as very important. Much discussion on here is the distraction of the 'technical' - I don't think that everyone wants geek Linux on a Mobile - that's not sexy to most other than uber uber geeks. What is is Multimedia prowess - excellent Music, Film and Gaming - with the applications stuff surely running second fiddle to this. So, I'd like to get some discussion going to see if people feel the same way or this kind of movie support is seen as superfluous. Also, if people know of (other than the exceptionally crap yxflash) any Vxid Divx and AC3 support tools, installable codecs or applications I'd love to hear from you.
Regards,
Simon
Dude,
You need to cut out all the swearing!
I have used yxflash too - useless, laggy, not worth the download time! But, I have just been reading about the HTC Desire which apparently comes with Divx support out of the box! So, hopefully one of the genius devs on here will be able to get this working on our Hero's soon
Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous of Google to think this doesn't matter. This would have been an excellent feature to contrast with Apple. I was playing all sorts of codecs on winmo with the core media player years before android.
Firstly, it's a cellphone... it's not your ****ing TV or laptop.... you don't need all your mp3s and videos immediately ready on your phone. If you really HAVE to watch a video on the go you can easily convert it.
Ok, I know you didn't want to hear this.
Now, it's not Google's business to develop special apps. OEMs like HTC can include extra features by default and it's not so hard to make an app that uses ported native libraries.
Well, another thing: DivX is "dead". There's no DivX hardware decoder chip included in newer hardware, so even if someone makes an app it'll drain the battery or even worse, not run fast enough. Now, there's only limited space in a phone's hardware. You can't add all chips for all codecs. It's only natural that the manufacturers only choose the newest most advanced codec.
Quite clearly an idiot - most probably American
Woo - we spotted your 'attempts' at a windup - did you employ everything you learnt at kindergarten ? I mean - you're good - we've seen the classics:
Dismissal, condescension, 'superiority' - such insight, breathtaking
Just some suggestions that spring to mind, son: Cliffs, rope, 200 Paracetamol, guns - in fact anything that may cause you harm
It's food for thought
Hello all. As a prospective HD2 owner I just wanted to pose a question or two in regards to the changes that have occurred to the phone now that you're all happily running the latest and greatest custom versions of 2.2. I have an X10 and sadly for me, i'm still running 1.6 Needless to say the idea of being able to dual boot Win Mobile and Android is pretty cool. And from what i'm reading, you'll all be flashing android directly in the not to distant future.
Anyway, my question is in regards to hardware and apps. The first is the camera. In initial reviews of the HD2 the camera had some issues with funny "hue's" showing up in the photo. Some would look pinkish. And the other question is in regards to video recording. Again, initial reviews state that switching from camera to video was laggy and jumpy and that the video quality itself was choppy, and well, sucked. Has any of this improved with the jump to Android? Will it be possible to record at 720p like so many other phones are doing now?
As far as apps are concerned have there been any issues with media apps like MixZing, or Meridian? Any here using Vignette for the camera? How do games play on the phone now? There are a multitude of multitouch games out there that are currently beyond my reach with the X10 (lets not get started on the multitouch debate). If you hadn't guessed i'm looking to use this phone primarily for multimedia purposes. Just don't want to waste my time with another device that leaves me wanting just a bit more. That being said I can get my hands on one for very little so recouping my $$ via resale shouldn't really be an issue.
Thanks for taking the time to read this novel and any help / suggestions are appreciated.
I can only answer your question about recording in 720p. AFAIK, 720p recording is not yet supported in any kernel tree. I also don't know if hardware-wise it is possible to record in HD. I don't really use my HD2 for multimedia purposes so I really can't tell more at this point.
I know people from samsung do read xda so this is my request to them.
Can you please release a high end device with unmodified Android most manufacturers are so into making their own UI's that no one is using actual andorid.
You already have the best hardware and can differentiate from others by highlighting it their is no need for you to make a UI to differentiate your device. Just give us a pure Android device with OS that works like Google intended I know some will say we have nexus S but with it not having the same screen for different regions plus it was already not the best device when it was released Hardware wise.
Why? I imagine that a lot of people that buy their devices - you know, the non-technical types that don't frequent places such as XDA - actually quite like TouchWiz. Simple to use and with a few more features than stock, sprinkled with eye candy.
The hard core always have the option of replacing it.
I have a Nexus S and i'm not pleased
I actually like the I9000 experience better,
the pure Google phone does not have hardware support for multimedia files like MKV, DivX, AVI, HD movies, flac, aac, etc...
it's kinda useless to have the state of the art phone, and being unable to play a video file on demand
yes, you can use software decoder, but the quality and lag is horrible

It wasn't the best hardware on release anyways. Have you checked the specs of both phones? Nexus S lacks some things aside of the screen.

The hardware is the same in both phones. I agree that the touchwizz video player is a nice addition however. Does it uses the GPU for decoding? Maybe, but I don't think so. I think it's software.
In all cases, the same technique could be used on the Nexus S to decode video.

it uses hardware to decode. and the nexus can be made to as well (it decodes basic stuff in hardware most likely)
just install rockplayer otherwise.

already using it, it's horrible compared to native support from hardware
i have much more fun and Higher quality playing the same video on the SGS than the SNS, even when using rockplayer
since rockplayer lets you choose hardware decode or software decode
I like my sgs a lot, but I have to say that I'm really disappointed. I don't mind having touchwiz or anything similar as long as I can flash any rom. But we need developers for that. What I want is to have a good phone out of the box. Still, gps, lag, battery ...completly wrong.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Well touchwiz must be appealing to the general public... I mean 10 million sold with a 2nd one the way with touchwiz v4, Personally I love what Samsung did software side. Sure the FS blows but isn't too bad
I've tried just about every other launcher (Gingerbread, Zeam, LauncherPro, ADW), but I still prefer TouchWiz, albiet gtg465x's modded version
Samsung could release 1 device and two roms (a custom one, an aosp one), so everybody could be happy.
At least they could provide a git repository, so people could compile it.
On my computer I can install the os I want (except MacOS - ) and many flavour of linux. I can even obtain updates...
We should really be able to do the same with smartphones and tablets...
I've tried searching but haven't had much luck... some of the older (relatively) search results seem to indicate that the atrix should be capable or, at least, will be capable of doing 1080p video playback. I'm not really planning on going out of my way to find 1080 files to play on the phone, but there are a few that I already have and I'm sure I'll come across a few in the future as well.
So the questions is: Can it be done? Am I asking too much?
Thanks in advance
dude I can't even get it to play MP4's let alone any HD ****... This phone has **** for touch sensitivity too. I traded my captivate for this and I'm not too happy as of yet
I've had issues with some MP4's and others have worked. The only difference I can readily see is the video quality which is why I posted this thread. I've found a couple of programs that will actually play the files I'm having issues with but it's so laggy that it's unusable.
People need to stop commenting on the other phones they've had experience with unless it is actually useful to a thread. If it wasn't such a prevalent issue with posters, I wouldn't be an ass about it, but I really don't care how you feel about this phone compared to your captivate as that is not at all related to my original post. Even though it's completely unrelated to my thread: the touch sensitivity is fine on mine. It's amazingly responsive and better than most phones I've used.
Point of this thread: Provide any information you may have on how to play higher quality video files or any future potential to do so. If there is a reason this is not possible, please provide that information.
Again, thanks in advance to any useful information!
Before the phone was even for sale they made a statement about 1080p support, it will be added after release with a patch. Goolge atrix 1080p!
I searched but none of it seemed to be recent enough to be definitive.
Is the problem that the software doesn't make use of the capabilities of the Atrix? Some reason I hadn't thought of that when looking for an app earlier...
If rumor is true, Tegra 2 only supports a specific type of HD format or something... and its not the common type that most get ripped too.
This is a Xoom thread that is all hot about the same issue... HD video choppy, no audio, etc, etc... The Xoom uses Tegra 2 as well.

I was able to get a 720p WMV running through RockPlayer, but I'm not sure if it's really the right quality. I haven't tried 1080p, due to the notice about the patch requirement.
Hi,
I currently have a Roku, firetv and raspberry pi for Kodi and emulation and I would like something which I like one device to rule them all - Kodi, prime video, Plex and Netflix all in one. Shield can do that - which is great!
However, I'm struggling to justify the cost. Aside from the 2019 rehashed version putting the price up a bit, I'm starting to feel Nvidia may give up on this platform in a couple of years with stadia and other providers taking the streaming gaming market. £200 is a lot to waste if they dump it in a couple of years.
So my current setup is I use Roku daily, and Kodi for some films at weekends, and I have a second SD card for emulation. Why would I spend £199 on this when I could replace my Roku and RPI with newer 4k models for a cheaper price?
There are also alternatives although I'm struggling to find a similarly CPU powered unit for this money. On the emulation front I would really like to get to GameCube and 1080p N64, let alone Dreamcast. Annoyingly, all this can be emulated on my powerful android phone! But I don't want a phone or a switch like dock - I want something wired in.
So alternatives here are like odroid or other RPI like cards which provide the grunt and power, but more these would be a Kodi box replacement rather than the one device to rule them all. HTPCs are out of the question afaik as they would be too expensive, but is this still the case?
(Please note, this thread is intentionally blunt to drive out conversation)
even if nvidia dumps it in a few years itll still b the best you can buy.. i also have all those devices and none of them even get close to the shield for years running..
heck, the 2017 model still holds its own against the 2019 model..
also i think the game streaming argument is not even an argument lol.. i can almost guarantee any device google or anyone else will put out will still not come close to the shield.. not to mention if its a streaming service.. nvidia is officially supporting android tv os so dont be surprised if the services become available on the shield down the road..
to top it off, nvidia has been streaming games just fine for years now so they definitely have a leg up already in that aspect also..
i alsi think the price argument is not valid.. you get what you pay for lol.. im sure if u went with a shield to start you wouldnt have wasted money on shotty rokus or pis.. the amount of $$$ you already spent on sub par devices probably amounts to more than you wouldve paid for a shield
It depends on what you want to do with it.
For pure movie watching the Shield's PQ is just not very good. I highly recommend picking up a cheap Amlogic based Android box and installing CoreELEC on it. For the money they can't be beat, and the PQ is leaps and bounds ahead of the Shields. I have a $30 S912 generic box with CoreELEC on it and it looks amazing compared to my $200 Shield.

I've not noticed any picture quality differences between Amlogic and Nvidia Shield, besides given it's all digital and decoding is easy and just mathematics, why should the picture quality be different? Something else may be going on with the setup perhaps?
I've really wanted to love Amlogic, but what I have found with Amlogic is bugs, I've not found a box yet that will play video back without some issue (frame's being drop, strange artefacts, issues with HDMI frame rates, or no support for streaming services due to not having the necessary DRM etc), now this isn't so much the fault of Amlogic but the rubbish support of the cheap Chinese manufacturers that don't test or update their software, and third party firmware not having access to the latest codecs and drivers to improve the situation. The S905x2, I tried 2 different boxes and countless different ROMs and couldn't stop it from having issues with decoding certain videos, videos that played without issue everywhere else, including the Amlogic S905 non x2, but that had other issues! In the end I bought an Nvidia Shield and have had no problems at all.

The note about HDMI quality - so a couple of things. Believe it or not, a decent cable can make a difference in visual quality, in particular the colour in which with a decent cable you can get much richer and warmer colour along with better looking bitrate image. Hard to believe I know as it's only digital - but if the cable does not deliver a consistent bit rate then you see degradation on the image - particularly on large 4k screens.
However, the thing that makes the most difference is the source. If you have a quality source, then you get quality output. I've heard the shield suffers from bland colourisation, along with some screen tearing. For £200 I would expect it to match the quality of my 4k Blu-ray, which from what I'm hearing it doesn't.
I wasn't quite thinking of the armlogic route but it is something of consideration as they are indeed cheap. The question here - is a £200 device that much better image and does it have that many features to warrant the £200. I'm not sure it does, but it would be good to obtain some objective feedback.
On a side note, if I wanted the most powerful emulation device for the same money, is the Nvidia the answer? Ideally I would like to run GameCube games (as getting out the old box and games is a bit annoying), but I hear dolphin emulation struggles on the Nvidia (mainly down to poor optimization, the hardware should be capable). Is there such a device and ideally one that can run Kodi also.
