Cellular strength and throughput - Nokia 7.1 Real Life Review

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Nokia 7.1's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.

On Tmobile in Seattle area, Nokia 7.1 is significantly slower than my 2017 Moto G5 Plus.
Moto: 31.7 down, 5.9 up, 29 latency
Nokia (evening): 8.7 down, 0.7 up, 33 latency
Nokia (morning): 23.6 down, 4.1 up, 36 latency

For me , I just got this device as the area I live has B66 and I see similar issues. I never get LTE but 4G and at times 4G +. I tested the speed on fast.com vs. speed test . It's lower but I thought it's due to no LTE . I am not seeing LTE as an option to set in the settings just 2g/3g and 4g. Is 4g LTE in HMD parlance? I get full signal strength though.

I'm not sure about speeds vs my G5+ yet, but although the icon in the notification bar shows 4G, checking in the Testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*) shows connected to LTE data and also I have a symbol in the shade showing VOLTE is active. Just no LTE indicator in the notification icons it appears.
EDIT:
Additionally, the Ookla Speedtest app registers the test as T-Mobile LTE.

My understanding is "4G" represents "LTE" could be wrong though

Good to know that this is indeed latching to LTE as I was debating if I should return it .. Its been just a few days since I got this. I think this is something HMD is doing and I have seen that many phone OEMs that mfg for EU/ASIA have different ways to show the signal. Eg. Nokia used to show 3.5G vs. HSPA or HSPA +. I assumed that this was the case.
The same sim on Essentials show LTE and is also near stock android and why I posted this. Interestingly the Nokia 8 (Scirocco)
https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000027462
Lastly, the speedtest apps are biazed and that fast.com (hosted by Netflix) shows the true speeds - I can tell you that the fast.com is significantly slower

I am sure this is what it is but is super confusing as different OEM's use different ways to represent it and carrier devices force the OEM's to put what they think it should be. The non-carrier devices are not consistent from what I have observed. My interest was to confirm if Nokia 7.1 gets LTE..

I contacted Nokia support and they confirmed the Nokia 7.1 supported LTE bands; unfortunately they barely support Tmobile. The phone supports Tmobile band 2 & 4 but does not support band 12, 66, or 71.

Not that I don't doubt that support rep but Amazon's listing shows:
"All the latest connection options including NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, OTG, fast USB Type-C charging, and a fingerprint sensor. LTE Bands supported: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 28, 38, 40, 66"
And using the app LTE Discovery, I'm currently connected to Band 2 LTE on T-Mobile in the SE United States which is not in that rep's list. I believe there are different variants of the 7.1 but I may be incorrect, but the one I bought from Best Buy has not had any issues connecting to T-Mobile's LTE network.
Using Amazon's information (provided by manufacturer) they have T-Mobile completely covered (2,4,66,5,12) except the new 600mhz Band 71.

This info was posted for me by a Nokia rep concerning the bands in the US model. This agrees with B&H's and Amazon's listings. I have both sim slots occupied at the moment. Sim 1 an AT&T sim and sim 2 is a Mint sim (running on T Mo network). Signal strength seems about right for both of them so far.

I see the same thing the Ookla Speedtest app and also the Signal Check Pro app shows both sims as connecting to LTE.

I'm on ATT. My phone was only indicating 4G (no LTE) until I updated the APN settings. I used ATTs recommended APN settings for LTE and now I am showing LTE in the status bar.

G935FD duos (dual SIM) - no LTE on T-Mobile in the US

My S7 Edge G935FD (dual SIM international version) gets only "4G" on T-Mobile in the San Francisco Bay Area, and never "LTE". Is this a "4G vs. LTE" naming issue, or does it lack the band T-Mobile requires for LTE? It also gets "H+" often, in the same location that my old S5 had full bars LTE.
Speed tests with the SpeedSpot app range from 17Mbps to 33Mbps down, and 3.75 to 7.5Mbps up on "4G", but only 5Mbps down and 1Mbps up in H+ areas.
I bought it from tropical_mobile on eBay.
I think 4g and lte are the same..

Just naming issue with international version.
@kvsandeepreddy is right.
LTE means LongTermEvolution which is the so called 4th generation of Mobile Networks. So LTE is 4G
1G = Analog mobile Network, I think
2G = GSM and EDGE
3G = UMTS and HSDPA
4G = LTE
FD version is released for asian countries... back in india we use 4g instead of lte
Poorer connectivity on S7 than S5

Well, that means that the S7 dual-SIM gets poorer reception than my old single-SIM S5:
In the same spot in the building (at my work desk), I'd get full LTE bars on the old S5, but only H or H+ at best on the new S7 Edge dual SIM. In practice this means ~6x slower downloads and ~7x slower uploads. Pretty ****ty.

Phone being a dual sim doesnt usually affect the sig al strength.. maybe the inbuilt receiver in s7 edge is defective.. heard some other people complaining about the signal strength too

No that's not what it means. The g935fd version is meant to be able to switch to any international firmware version. There are several different modems for each region. You are going to just have to flash different modems in Odin and see which one works best for your region. This does not trip knox or void warranty as long as you do it right because you are flashing official modems. As I said in the other thread you were in, do your research.
Can someone link me to the best modem to used on the dual sim model in the states?
Which modem did you end up using? I am also wondering which version is best in the US.

I'm just using the UAE firmware that the duos came with. It's updated with the June security patch. Only issue I've had is slower than normal download and upload speeds on at&t. It's not that big of a deal, just annoying. I think it has more to do with atts provisioning on their network. I'll post a solution if I figure it out, whether it's a different csc, apn settings or some device setting on my account.
4G is called LTE in USA. If you are getting 4G. That means you are getting LTE.
Cheers.

Yes, you are correct. However, I should have clarified that my statement is based on connection speed tests not on network symbols in notification bar. My slower speeds are in comparison to other 4g devices being tested in the same location on the same network.

Yep. I can confirm the same thing. I have 2 s7 edges. One is a DUOS and the other is AT&T branded. Tested both repeatedly and found that the AT&T branded device is getting way faster speeds than the DUOS. In my particular area the AT&T phone was reaching up to 60 Mbps while the DUOS was only hitting 30-40 Mbps. Very curious on how to fix this since this phone has all the necessary bands to support LTE in the states.

At least you're getting that. My speed tests are consistently in the .72 to 5 Mbps range on the DL and 1-7Mbps on the upload, which is basically about half to a third of what my other AT&T devices are getting in the same location at same time.

It's not just the bands. AT&T is known for prioritizing their branded phones vs. BYOD phones. It's done by EMEI ... they have a list of all their branded models in a DB and they get priority. TMO doesn't much care. I tested my Duos yesterday and TMO gave me 59.4/12.8 network transfer. It's as good as my 6P. My AT&T sim is in sim1 and is restricted to 2G which is fine since I need calls and texts only from it since it's a work #.
And it does support most of AT&T's bands except band30 which is really new. 4G everywhere else is LTE here as was said in other responses in this thread. It's most likely AT&T deprioritizing the phone as it's a BYOD.

It doesn't have band 12 so I'd save your money. Band 12 is just the deeper penetration 700mhz anyway which around me (SF area) can't be found. My Nexus 6P which has band 12 never connects to anything but band 4 .. ever.
Same crap... If it bothers you flashes the csc

I noticed this as well with my 6p. Supposedly band 12 was to save us all but my phone prefers band 4. I only got a glimpse of band 12 the other day then the phone switch switched back to band 4 when I toggled wifi on and off.

Essential Phone Compatible with Verizon's VOLTE - HD Voice - Band 4 ???

I currently have the HTC U11 and despite loving the phone there is one major drawback for me and that's the lack of Band 4 working for Verizon Wireless. My S8 would get speeds of 50-65mbps on Band 4 and now I only get speeds of 10-15mbps on Band 13 on my HTC U11 which really hurts my tethering. Even though HTC's Unlock U11 show that it is capable of using Band 4, it doesn't work with Verizon.
So my Question is, will Band 4 on the Essential Phone work with Verizon and will VOLTE be present? :fingers-crossed:
Anyone know? Any Ideas?
The Essential Phone’s supported networks/bands are as follows:
UMTS/HSPA+ : 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 , 8
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
CDMA EV-DO Rev A.: 0, 1, 10
TD-SCDMA: 34, 39
FDD-LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 17, 20, 21, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 66
TDD-LTE:38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43
Bump, would love to know too... Am deciding on this phone vs pixel 2 on Verizon
I'll let you know as soon as mine arrives.
Same here, with my U11 being stuck to band 13 the phone becomes basically useless during peak hours in the city.

I really hope the PH-1 gets HD Voice, I would hate to go back to no being able to use data while in a phone call, those were dark times.

Keep in mind that the U11 "supports" all the bands and cdma just like the essential phone does but It's verizon who's forcing them to disable them via software. If you have root you can actually enable these extra bands and see for yourself. I'll be getting the essential hopefully once it's out as well.

I hope you're not confusing things. The device only works over VoLTE not CDMA, so VoLTE is already enabled. You're just limited to band 13 by the software.
Now to enable the other bands you need root and the app is called network signal guru. In the settings under experimental you can append missing bands. Then in the 3 dot menu you can enable them under lock bands. I use lte discovery to confirm the band I'm on.
Keep in mind this will allow to connect to other bands but this can also affects battery life since it can jump between bands now. Just depends on your coverage. This also will not enable carrier aggregation since that's software based also and missing.

Gotcha. And no problem. It really is a shame that Verizon cripples the u11. Here's hoping they don't do the same to the essential.
If you tell me how to check band functionality I will.
Also I *think* volte works, as the enhanced LTE is checked with a description of "Use LTE network to improve voice and other communication quality"

On the essentially I'm almost positive VoLTE will work out the box. It's nothing new and even the nexus phone compatible with Verizon had this.
Easy way to test this is to add HD voice to your Verizon line if you haven't already. Reboot the phone and it should just work. I think since you have that option and it's not greyed out means you already do. If you call another Verizon user with VoLTE enabled you'll see the little HD icon when connected.
You can use lte discovery app in the play store to see what band you are currently connected to. Band 13 is there oldest and can be the most congested depending on where you live. Band 2 is newer with band 4 being the newest that supports xlte.

hey yeah I encountered the same problem using my Verizon service. The only fix I discovered that worked is to disable "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" within the phone's Cellular neurotic settings menu. Once I unchecked that option, I was then able to make outgoing calls.
On my essential, (got it last night). VoLTE works for sure out of the box, enhanced LTE is checked (was by default. Made a test call to my company provided Verizon s7 edge. I do have the HD icon, (also verified I could surf the web while on a call) hence voice/data simultaneously.
No Wi-Fi calling however.

Identical experience for me, thankfully. VoLTE working fine, signal strength is good, HD calling sounds fine, calls coming through as they should.
I have to admit: I like this phone a lot more than I thought I would. I might just keep it. Feels great in the hand despite being a heavy square brick, it has that "quality" feel to it that was sort of missing on some past Android devices. It is also way less laggy than my S8.

Cellular strength and throughput

I am blown away by the LTE speed in my area! My previous ATT branded LG V20 couldn't top 75Mbps, so this is a leap for me with LTE+
I am very curious about signal strength in areas that don't have blasting towers in the background. My old S3 always had poor signal. I was blown away by how much better my soon to be defunct Note 4 was at picking up and holding a signal. I hope that the Note 8 continues that fine tradition.

I will be honest, the signal blows me away. I have never gotten any bars of signal inside of the manufacturing plant I work in, but with this phone I have nearly full service . ALL previous phones I have used, which have all been ATT branded mind you, have failed in here. I can sit at my desk here and browse the web like its no big deal. Old phones I had to run out to the sidewalk to use it, for anything... I don't understand why this is SO vastly better now, but I cannot complain. Part of me wonders if it has to do with the ATT CSC layer - which is why I have worried about flashing that to this unlocked device whenever it shows up in the wild. It is exceptional right now, everywhere I go! :good:

I'm on a very old grandfathered unlimited data plan. Previously up to my Note 4, I was only able to get 4G speeds. But since getting my Note 8, I'm all of sudden able to get an LTE connection (while still on the old grandfathered plan). Take a look at this one freak result:
Im on T-Mo and also on a grandfathered plan with unlimited data. As of this morning, the download speed has gotten less than 3mbps
No idea why. I have downloaded about 50 apps this morning since I was just setting up my Note8, but all was going fast and suddenly turtle slow.
I was disabling a ton of things in Package Disabler, but not sure what it could possibly be.
It gets better signal run my S7 Edge. In areas where the S7 Edge may go to Emergency Calls Only, the Note8 will hold 1-2bars consistently, no missed calls or deoppe calls.
Luckily I have now moved to a new office which has great signal to.

Buddy, check closer. WiFi was on when I took screenshot. That session was done when WiFi was off.
Very bad signal reception for me
I am using Airtel, Jio and Reliance GSM 4G sims in India and I have compared signal strength of Note 8 with Redmi Note 4, Nexus 6P and LYF Flame 1 mobiles.
And I found Note 8 to be having the weakest signal reception strength. Same pair of sims when used simultaneously on these phones, (not nexus 6P as it is singal sim) Redmi Note 4 and LYF Flame 1 never had any issues with signal reception. But with Note 8 both Reliance GSM 4G and Jio sims are having almost no LTE signals and for Airtel where other phones show all 5 bars, note 8 have 3-4 bars.
I am not sure if this is the problem with just my phone or others as well in India.
I'm with ragavbpl.
My 7+ and X show me full bars, my unlocked N8 barely 2-3.
Using a combination of 3 different carriers, slots changed out frequently, locations. But is the same everywhere.
4G drops off and goes to H+ (what is that anyway...2G?) or even E, very frequently, when the other phones on the same network have full 4G.
This causes pages not to load, just when you need them to, emails and chats to stop or get delayed, more often than not.
I wonder if this is a carrier issue? Or a phone one?
The LTE speeds on my N950N is amazingly fast when compared to my old N910C
With Freedom Mobile, I'm using Open Signal, to see what cell tower it's connected to, as well as other towers in my area. Using this tool, tests your data throughput at the tower site itself. The signal in my whole neighborhood is weak so I'm connected to WiFi (and using VoWiFi as a result -- "Voice-Over-WiFi"). Normally the signal will alternate towers from 12-15KM away and this results in dropped calls no matter what device I use -- they need to work on getting some microsites, or sharing more of the existing infrastructure (there's an underutilized tower site in the strip mall right next to me even).

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy A50's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
Always high ping on online games but my other phone works well on same simcard
Mobile data is crap i swear
Works perfect just like my s9plus
Something is gravely wrong with this phone. I have the Latin American variant here in the US using T-Mobile SIM card and the variant has all the T-Mo bands, but 4G LTE data is crawling slow, very slow. I have several phones at various times, and this is the slowest I have seen. Even the cheaper Galaxy J4+ is a lot normally faster than this Galaxy A50.
this phone mobile signal is horrible, I don't have any signal issue with redmi note 5. This phone is pretty disappoint me
It's roughly the same as other phones I own (S2, S4, S8, Lg v10..)
Horrible Mobile signal using on AT&T in the USA! Especially on LTE. One has to be right by the cell tower to get Full signal. Don't know...may be the radios are not optimized for the networks here. But the phone has all the LTE bands used here. Where my other phones show full signal, this phone barely shows any. Now,when close to the tower and full signal is shown, it has excellent LTE speeds. Using LTE discovery app, I have observed my device connect to LTE bands 2,4,5 and 17 on AT&T.
If there is a Samsung representative who reads this forum, I want to say something, your A50 is sucks
Quite good Cellular strength here. i use 2 sim ( 2 operators ) , and both works fine
Worse than my old iPhone 7 here in the UK, At home I would have got 2 bars, I get none on this phone, at least I have wifi calling thought. It is a major disappointment at work though, I would have got 1-2 bars now I have no bars unless I go outside.
Network reception sucks, especially the data speeds, im Using Jio 4G & Vodafone 4G.
While my friend who has recently bought A50 which has older March update patch doesn't have any such problems though the operators are same & We stay in the same building.
I believe its a bug in the recent update (June/May).
Same here, I have the latinoamerican version A505G with June patch (may patch same problem).
I live far away of the city. With LTE I have one bar or 0 sometimes. I tried with my old samsung j5 2016 (Snapdragon 410!!) and in this I have 3/4 signal. In 3g is the same proportion. In the places with full signal, I have not any problem.
I have been discover the A50 is using the band 28 (inside places). How I can change the band ?

ATT?
Does anyone have good cellular strength? What model A50 hardware and what date firmware update are you on?
Anyone have an A50G and their cellular strength is good?
Terrible Cellular Strength
I've been using this phone for couple of months but honestly cellular strength is very weak! Mobile data keeps struggling and frequently changes status 4G to H+
One of the most annoying thing is when I first enable the mobile data it gets automatically disabled/enabled on its own for more than 5-6 times! It happens each and every times!
I doubt it. It's probably one of those saturated places where the network towers are not too far apart. This device's cellular radios is definitely not optimized for the US market. As I posted above, very horrible cellular signal using it (I have the Panama version A505G) on AT&T. Signal is good only if right next to cellular tower.
Tons of complaints in this samsung forum - https://r2.community.samsung.com/t5...twork-problem-in-low-signal-area/td-p/1345215

i think i'm going to pass on the A50, samsung downgraded it to 4gb of ram anyways
AS I posted above, very horrible signal for me as well. Using the A505G version on AT&T.

If the device supports the correct bands, shouldn't the signal be fine?
What kind of optimizations are needed to have it perform like other Samsung devices that have support for the same band, but get good cellular signal on that band?
Can we flash the optimized radios from those other devices onto the A50?

Mi Mix 5G - how do I turn on 5G?

Hey
I recently bought a Mi Mix 3 5G and I get 5g signal come up on the top of the screen where I am, but the speeds are only coming through as 4g speeds.
when in *#*#4636#*#* I can see that I'm connected to LTE and not 5g.
Can anyone tell me how to enable 5G properly?
Practically no 5G coverage in the world...
https://www.worldtimezone.com/5g.html
Yea, maybe so... But I have coverage where I live.
I already subscribe to home 5g broadband through my provider and it runs on band n78.
So I get a signal, full 5g bars but speeds aren't 5g using the mi mix.
My home broadband 5g service is 400mbps.

Are you talking 5g through your home internet router? That's not the same thing. That's WiFi.
5g network is from your carrier and if your carrier has it it would be set up city wide not just at your home.
My home broadband 5g is a separate device.
I was only mentioning it to demonstrate I have 5g service where I live.
While my phone is disconnected from wifi, I get a 5g signal instead of 4g.
The speed however is only 25mbps as opposed to my home 5g broadband modem which is 350-400 mbps.
Does that make sense?

Maybe your data plan is limited?
Nah pulling over 200mbps on 4g.
My network operator has said they've enabled 5g on my sim.

Make sure your phone is up to date (5G didn't work at all on my Mi Mix 3 5G until I updated) and 5G is on in SIM card & mobile networks > Preferred network type.
Yea I've got the settings all set to allow it.
I get a 5g signal too but the speeds are like a single band of 4g.
Here's a screenshot of it all "working"
https://drive.google.com/file/d/11Wzs5KRWoDAYIsxTjBvVzTzhPUFTbCkW/view?usp=drivesdk
Which version of firmware are you running?
I'm using the latest global rom.

I'm on the global rom 10.3.19 and I get a strange problem too - 4G appears in the bar at the top but I get 5G speeds - but I guess it does work.
Lol that's the opposite of my problem ?
I'm having a similar problem. Connecting to 5g but speeds range between 2 MB (yep that's right) to 150 MB - which is similar to what I can get in 4g.
Did you find a solution?
No solution yet.
Going to flash the new EU rom soon to see if that fixes it. I'm running global ATM.
What rom are you running and what network?

Does it run the Perseus rom? I don't see one for the 5G.
You have to contact your mobile company and ask to activate the 5g service on your SIM card , all I know that the 5g service is still available for postpaid not prepaid. And they may ask you to go for the newest branch to change your SIM to make it work
Flashed the EU ROM, doesn't even have 5g as an option in preferred network settings.
Wtf is wrong with this phone?
I am on PEMEUXM MIUI Global 10.3.21
and in the telekom germany network it shows 5G in the settings
but in the vodafone germany network it does not show 5G in the settings
Contracts both allow for 5G - I am in the hotline loop with vodafone germany right now to get the Mi Mix 3 5G activated.
Edit: The hotline answered that Xiaomi has to enable the 5G settings button in android through an OTA update. Anyone knows if this is part of the global beta rom? Thanks!
Have you had any luck?
Any joy resolving?
Nope.
