From CM back to stock ROM - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using CM 13 for a couple of years on my Nexus 6P and would like to return back to stock ROM, possibly Oreo. I know Heisenberg has an extensive post with tutorials on this found at https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62924118&postcount=2 but I'm after a little guidance and possibly explanation. What is the difference between Part 9 and Part 11? Would I first have to revert to the stock ROM that CM 13 is built on (I think it might be Marshmallow) or can I just update straight to Oreo?

Just follow part 11. The difference between 9 and 11 just seems to be that in part 11 you wipe the data, while in 9 you keep it. You don't need to first flash marshmallow and then upgrade, just go straight to the latest factory image.

Thanks for your reply elonus. So do I understand correctly that following Step 11 won't delete whatever personal data I have in my storage? If so, does that include things like text messages and the like?
One final question, I've checked the Factory Images page and find that there are multiple 8.1.0 versions. Would all of them be stable builds and I just install the most recent one?

It will keep your internal storage, eg the "sd card" where your pictures and files and such are stored. You will however lose all apps, app data, settings, text messages and such. So if you want to keep that you should make a backup with Titanium Backup or similar. It will be like when you install a new ROM with a full wipe.

They are all stable, the newer ones just have newer security updates. So you should use the newest one.

Elonus, once again, thanks for all your help. I will have some free time in a couple of days and will attempt it then.
Rather than completely deleting everything, will I be able to just go ahead and do Step 9 instead therefore retaining everything on my phone?

You could always try, and do Step 11 if you get problems. But I dont think it will work very well, when switching between ROMs it's always recommended to do a clean install.

No worries elonus, if clean install is recommended I'm happy to do that. Thanks for all the help.

[Q] Installing google apps back onto Nexus 7 Pacman Rom

If anybody had seen my previous issue I apologize for wasting your time, I was able to resolve the issue by wiping every last bit of data from the system, which resulted in the tablet having no OS and I was able to re-install Pacman without further issue.
But now my question is this, with seemingly everything back to normal, so far as installing a new rom goes, how can I get my necessary google apps back onto my tablet?
Also how can I restore the apps I previously installed? I see that everything is still on the storage but I can't access any of the apps.

Did you reflash the gapps? Thats the only way to get the necessary gapps that I know of. As for the restoring your old apps if you didn't use an app backup like mybackup pro or titanium backup then I don't know how you'll get them back.

So far as the apps were concerned I suspected as such, I just figured that the data would be readily available but a lesson was learned.
And yes I did try to reflash gapps but I still got the error prior to reflashing the rom after wiping the system data.
But I got frustrated with it and backed up my system data back to stock; I was thinking maybe I used the wrong gapps file for my rom but the app I used found the file that was compatible with it and so I thought it was safe to use, but after trying to reflash gapps 3 times it didn't work at all.

Need help/overwhelmed! Noob flashing to GPE 5.0.1?

Hi,
I want to install the ROM here on my Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505). I rooted and installed CM on it about 4 months ago, but since have forgotten anything about the process except for towelroot lol. My phone is currently running jflte snapshot M10 ROM for CM. Unfortunately, I have grown quite sick of it as I find I have to restart my phone once, maybe twice a day for everything to run smoothly. I run into problems where the WiFi likes to get stuck saying 'Turning on..'. Ive also been having problems with Google Maps and GPS lately and havent been able to rely on it, possibly its an issue its having with CM. I want to have the fresh Lollipop feel on my phone without any problems if possible. The only trouble is I dont know how to get there. Can anyone help me? Ive completely forgotten the process needed and when I try to look for it on here I am overwhelmed with things I need to do, which version I need to use etc etc. If anyone would be able to help me achieve this it would be greatly appreciated. In the end I just want a nice Lollipop android phone that doesn't have problems on my current S4 (Id rather not have to get a new phone at least until December ) I'm pretty sure I dont have a custom kernel or anything like that as it mentioned in some pages that I will need to get one I think? I also have philz CWM installed.
You have Philz installed, so you don't need to root again. Download the ROM and follow the instructions on the page.

It also mentioned to make sure I have the latest modem for my variant, how do I check/update that?
In regards to the kernel (which has a link on the same page), what do I do with that?
I don't have the latest modem for my I9505 and that ROM works perfectly fine. Where you've been on a custom ROM for a while finding out which modem you're supposed to use may be difficult. That's also why I recommend not worrying about it, unless you need to.

Ok thanks. In regards to the kernel that is linked on the page, I guess I would be at an advantage if I downloaded and installed that too. How do I install it?
If' we're talking the same GPE ROM, and I think we are, the kernel is included in the ROM download. You'll be prompted to select a kernel when you run the install through the recovery.

Ok thanks a lot!
So process:
Backup data/photos etc
Nandroid backup
Full wipe using philz?
Flash ROM
Done?
You've got it.
When you are prompted to select the kernel, use the Googy Max kernel. The stock kernel sometimes causes random reboots. Also, on first boot the S4 will sit for a fair amount of time before prompting you to set a language. THIS IS NORMAL. It's because Android 5.0.x uses Art instead of Dalvik, and has to compile the apps the first time around.
In other words, after rebooting, just be patient.

No, they are gone forever.
How is that even possible that you wiped them? Wiping in the custom recovery never touches your internal storage by default. So you have done it yourself. You probably did a factory reset from within android itself. Never do that again. Use the custom recovery for wiping only and you never will have this problem again.

Are you sure about that? It happened the first time I flashed a ROM. Wiped cache, wiped Dalvik through CWM. Never did a factory reset. No need for caps.

No it's not possible for it to happen without you doing so. Unless you encrypted your phone or something.
ps removed the caps
The rom he installed has an aroma installer which offers the option to do a simple wipe (Dalvik, cache and data), no wipe (Dirty flash) and a factory reset (which also wipes the internal storage).
By default it is set on factory reset option.
It also says in red letters that this option is recommended.
So maybe he left it on factory reset (since it was also recommended) , instead of changing it to simple wipe, and that wiped the whole phone, including the internal storage.
Will a software that recovers deleted files not work? Since the phone wasn't encrypted.
It would if Windows saw the internal storage as a drive. Due to MTP it doesn't. He'll have to do a search, but there was another S4 owner who lost his photos and was trying to get them back. I don't know if a solution was ever found.

If that's the case then shame on the developer. A factory reset in a custom recovery should leave the internal storage intact.

No it's impossible. Once it's gone the files are permanently gone. Not even a professional company can restore them. That's because of TRIM that Android has from version 4.3.

It's not in the recovery. It's in the aroma installer. Those are 2 different things.
Besides, there is a description, under each setting, of what each one does.
@Lennyz1988: Perhaps you should bring this up with the developers of the ROM and see what they say. I suspect they have a very good reason for wiping the internal storage, and my gut instinct tells me it has to do with the Android folder on there.
On the flip side, thanks for the homework you gave me. I have to look into what TRIM is all about, as my last device was powered by Gingerbread.

How to completely "reset" phone while still keeping root and recovery?

Hey
So quick question, what steps would I have to take to essentially "start fresh" but while still keeping root and twrp. I want to go back to stock or a stock-like ROM but I want to declutter the phone and backups I've made.
Any easy and efficient way to do this?

Look at step 9 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
You'll just have to do a factory reset in twrp.

Hey, thanks for the response. I'm still a little lost on what to do exactly, sorry.
So I would have to do every single thing in Step 9 or just a part of it?
Did you root the device yourself? Have you personally flashed any roms? If not, I suggest reading through the entire thread I posted. If you did that stuff yourself what doesn't make sense?

Yeah, I rooted everything myself and I've flashed like two ROMs so far (and I used the root method from the link you sent), but I just want to go back to stock or a stock-like ROM, while still preserving root and twrp. I read step 9 from the link you sent, my question is if I have to do every single thing in step 9, or do I have to do only a specific part from it, or do something in addition to step 9?
Apologies for any confusion
Forget what I said about factory reset in TWRP. Just do everything in step 9. Note that it says you might have to flash TWRP and SuperSU again. Not a big deal though.

Okay, sounds good. Just to be sure. Does it matter if I'm on Pure Nexus ROM? Will I still be able to do Step 9 without any problems?
thats right
Did I mention that I wanted it to free up space on my internal storage? I'm gonna make a full back up of my phone and transfer it to my PC, so I would want it to clear all the data as well. It will do that too right? I hope I'm making sense.

If you want to wipe your internal storage as well you'd need to follow section 10 instead in section 9, make sure you backup everything first because the whole phone will be wiped. If you skip flashing the recovery image you should be able to keep TWRP on your phone.
By the way, there's no way to preserve root when doing something like this, or when changing ROMs. Your root resides in the system partition which is overwritten when flashing the factory images or a ROM zip. It's simple to get back though, you just flash the SuperSU zip again.

Your bootloader will remain unlocked unless you deliberately issue the "fastboot flashing lock" command. There's nothing else you'd need to add/remove.

Okay I tried doing Step 10 and skipped the part where I had to flash the recovery. Everything went good, no errors or anything. Here's the thing though, even after choosing factory reset and performing the rest of the steps, my data, like pictures, videos, downloads, etc, are still there. I thought it would completely delete everything? Did I do something wrong?

No going back?

So, to my new found knowledge I made a big mistake.
I rooted my Nexus 6P for the first time ever, and I used the Nexus Toolkit to root after failing miserably via the classic method. After I rooted I installed some minor tweaks and I then decided to step it up and install lineage OS. I installed it with not much problem. I tried installing another slight tweak and I saw the message of "System UI has stopped". I panicked and factory reset and am installing again to the first version of Lineage I tried (which worked). I then started thinking...
If I want to uninstall lineage how do I get back to my stock OS?
I then saw all the forum posts on other devices and they all said just install the old ROM you backed up.
Guess who didn't back it up.
I wanted to see if there was any way I could get my stock OS back, I don't care if I can or can't sync my app with Titanium backup I just want stock back. I would've posted this in anohter seciton but since im new I thought I would put it in general rather than other less fitting subsections.
You can always go back. Just download the factory image and use adb to reinstall a fresh factory install.

Instructions and image downloads straight from Google.

Easiest thing to do is download the stock OTA from Google and simply adb sideload it via adb sideload command on your pc. Also I recommend trying different roms than lineage as many roms are based off it but with added features and improvements. I use this rom which includes the opengapps package for Google apps like play store. I recommend wiping everything and going back to stock and trying this rom or another one of your choice.

Phone goes to bootloader after installing a ROM

Hello,
I had some difficulties installing the Pixel Experience ROM. I successfully installed it two days ago, but I had installed an old version. I then got the newest version from the Pixel Experience website and installed it just like the time before in TWRP. After wiping and installing it I started having these issues.
When I tried to turn on my phone after installing the latest ROM, it said no os installed, and it went to the bootloader. I tried the whole installing progress many times and even went to OxygenOS in the middle of the tries.
I even watched the tutorials and all again, and did it exactly the same way as the first time when it worked.
I do not have any idea what is the problem, but if you have any suggestions they would be very much appreciated
thank you

What was your install process?
This guide is for Lineage but should work for most AOSP ROMs. On Pixel Experience you would obviously skip Gapps since they are included.

I used this guide which worked that first time, but it has a bit different way of wiping data than yours.
https://www.getdroidtips.com/pixel-experience-rom-oneplus-6t/
Your guide said OOS has to be installed on both slots which I think I did not do. That might also explain why it worked on the first time (OOS was already on both slots?)
Do you think that could be the reason?

That guide wipes a lot things (system, vendor, etc). Thats going to cause you problems. You only need OOS on both slots for the initial install. For updates no reason to wipe or flash to both slots. Notice my section on updating is very different. (Cliff notes version is in the second post.)
