OnePlus 6t and ROM development - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Historically, how has the development been on the OnePlus devices? I am torn between a Pixel 3 XL and going the cheaper route and going with a OnePlus 6t for the price savings, more RAM, and more advanced technology, but don't want to go to a phone that lacks custom ROM choices and less active US development.
What's your thoughts? OnePlus 6t or Pixel 3 XL?

Oneplus development is second to none. You're going to have choices and lots of them, very soon.

Oneplus 6 got released few months ago...
They are already about 15 ROMs & 10 custom kernels to try.
So yes ..great development

Generally very good although the camera is a bit downgraded when running AOSP due to the way it is coded on OnePlus' side.
The only unknown is how the code for the inscreen fingerprint scanner will be handled/ported.

If you want ROMs, go with Oneplus. Pixel ROMs have been slow to show and few/far between.
I have a Pixel 2 XL and the ROM scene is abysmal compared to the Nexus days - likely due to the cost of the devices. Many are claiming the OnePlus devices are the "New Nexus" line...and from looking at their forums, I'd have to agree with that assessment.
I'm getting the 6T the day it launches on T-mobile and passing the P2XL down to another family member.

OnePlus has got huge development support. I can assure you great development for 6T as sooner or later the sources will be unified with the 6. We will come to know more on it as and when the device tree and sources are released after the launch of the device.
Ill see your around here on the 6T forums :highfive:

Thanks Brothers!
I have a Nexus 6P now, but it is way overdue for replacement. I loved the development scene on the 6P, but is all but gone now. Was looking forward to the Pixel 3XL, but the 4GB of RAM, huge notch, and price was worrying me. I have been subscribed to OnePlus since the first one and have always been following new releases, just never jumped in and bought one.
We'll see you guys in a few weeks!

Has someone any idea , about the LED light?
Where is it?..

Don't worry bro there are some many peeps who gonna buy this phone even if there are no Headphone Jack on it, and im pretty sure the 6T gonna have a really rich development community! If it calms you im already started to make some Boot animations (i already made 8 of them they are in still in BETA but i'll able to finish it as soon as i get the phone), Icons, "Charging animation" <- (still don't know how its gonna work but at least the animation done )... So as soon the it's released, those guys who able to give something to the community, they gonna work to make this phone even better!

Darn, I was really looking forward to getting one... Are there any other good phones for flashing that are top of the line? I hate Samsung because you can't root their phones, and Google's development is almost non-existent I feel like there's no good phones anymore

No. AMOLED display with AOD. No need for it.

Yep, AOD is the way...

Actually I miss the trackball on my Nexus 1. Could see that sucker across the room and no device has as accurate a way to move around in text since. I say screw the embedded LED and give me a trackball!

Will it be possible for the fingerprint scanner to be ported to custom roms? And if so, how will it perform compared to on OxygenOS?

Out of interest whatever happened to Pure Nexus Rom, I know it was available initially for the OG Pixel and Pixel XL. Did development stop or ?

So basically because of unification there will be much cross development with what is already available for the OP 6, is that right ?

I've never seen it for the Pixel 2 XL. I thought it was one of the ROMs more for non-Google devices (since they are already "Pure Pixel", so-to-speak).
Pixel Dust ROM is out for it though - might be the same group?
Honestly, the thing that concerns me most about dev on the 6T is whether or not the devs will have an issue getting the in-display fingerprint working on ROMs. That'll be a make-or-break deal.

It was very popular on Nexus devices and did make its way to the OG Pixel (XL), but i'm not sure whether things fizzed out. I remember there be a lot of issues with the A/B partition if i'm correct.
Interesting what Devs will do for the fingerprint scanner, otherwise just stick with OxygenOS and flash a custom kernel

Sooner or later it will be porter but for actual experience we need to wait for the launch. As per testing the unlock is fairly quick to begin with and with extensive use after a week or so it becomes quicker as the algorithms are adaptive and keep learning your unlock pattern.
To make it even faster you can combine it with face unlock so both tech will be used simultaneously :good:

No Android P beta for Oneplus 5t, the existing flagship of OnePlus

For the first time Google, Android P's latest beta will be available on non pixel / Nexus devices including OnePlus 6, Essential PH-1, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Sony Xperia XZ2, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, and Vivo X21.
I immediately jumped to get my 5T signed up, only to face disappointment.
Android P beta for OnePlus 5t was skipped and the same was available only for yet to launch OnePlus 6.
Lately I have got a feeling that OnePlus has shifted their interest from consumer focused company to buiness oriented company who are more concerned about thier new flagship and less concerned about thier previous users.
The unofficial treble support was provided to our device by the hardworking developers of OnePlus community but OnePlus did not make any efforts to provide the same.
The OnePlus community should send a strong message to the company that they should not make the old coustmers feel left out.
We should pass following message to OnePlus:-
a) Providing official treble support to 5 and 5t.
b) Providing the lastest Android version along with their new flagship phones.( Which will be possible if support for project treble is available).
c) Providing all the exlusive upcoming features to previous generation phones (5 & 5t) till the time hardware permits.
A) That is not going to happen. But Mokee ported Treble so hopefully an P Beta port will come to 5T at some point.
C) This is OnePlus we're talking about, I doubt they will.
I really don't think they care about the community anymore.
I thought OnePlus had quietly prepared the 5T for Treble by creating an empty Vendor partition in the background? It's not formatted yet, and OOS doesn't see it, but it's there?
I'm unhappy too, that they didn't use the 5T for their P beta, but if they provided the official base for Treble, then maybe we'll still see something from them or at least it will be easier for the XDA Devs...

A) If we push.. all of us.. we might stand a chance.
C) Exactly
As I commented in the news.
Quote Google: "beta available TODAY from those OEMs".
The "today" tricked me into thinking that this would be my beloved 5t but Oneplus let Google speak about an even unannounced device just to get in that damn presentation.
In other words: Oneplus doesn't even care about their existing flagship the moment they know the rough release date for their next one. This is beyond everything I have ever seen in the smartphone business. At the same time advertising heavily the OP5t on Amazon to get one of the last ones.
Oneplus was never a community focused company they just said it so often that the people thought it would be so.
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!
As far as I can see this whole Situation; we will get a taste of Android P anyway. Either officially or non official.
Official: because there in fact is an unused Partition (unformatted)
Unofficial: because hobby dev peeps around the globe were able to make the oneplus 5t Support treble.. therefore custom Rom creators should be able to create Android P roms for it.
Are y'all really surprised that we wouldn't get a P beta? Lol
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk
Yes I'm in. Let's make a petition on change.org ?
Many people said of the oneplus 5t, it's the best against essencial phone... Better software, updates, design... But Essencial phone 1 have the beta xD
Now who is the best ??
I have a 5t
Android P require treble ?
I know this won't go down well, but did none of you do your homework on OnePlus before buying the 5t? OnePlus launch a new, replacement device every six months and concentrate on marketing and selling that; Every six months our new (to us) device gets moved to the back burner.
This is not a new strategy, and should not come as a surprise! Google how OnePlus 2 owners felt! I owned a 3t that was virtually obsolete four months later!
And every time this happens - every six months when a new device is launched - there is a thread on XDA to petition OnePlus about the unfairness of it all!
If this news is a surprise to anyone you should've been more aware of how the company operates.
Rant over.
Really dont't care for stock android p beta.
Much prefer for oxygen beta program with android P
Stock android is very poor and lack customization and feature option that oxygen offer.
If i want stock android experiance better solution is AOSP custom rom with plenty of feature and customization insteed of totaly naked stock android by Google IMO.
So we get OOS beta based on P later. (OP6 get first.)
I'm guessing we're still getting Treble support. There already is a /vendor partition created in one of the Beta updates iirc and they said: "Something exciting for you OnePlus 5/5T owners later this summer". So i'm guessing they're referring to Treble support.

Yh one does not always remember the exact words. P requires Treble we do not have Treble hence why we don't get it yet. If you really want it install MoKee ROM which enables Treble and wait for an Android P GSI.
Everyone should stop acting like treble is a hardware based thing.
The only reasons we did not get the beta is that Oneplus 1. is too lazy to deliver 2. wants to boost OP6 sales.
Treble is something completely software based and can be added at any given time (even without bricking the device).
I think the real reason we are complaining is (like the title says) that Oneplus is announcing stuff for a device that isn't even on sale yet.
It's like Google would have said "...and of course Pixel 3 is getting the beta from day one. We are already testing it internally and it is working great. In the meantime we are all very happy that you bought Pixel 2".
Not surprising from OnePlus. Unfortunately, they only seem to be concerned with what's the best way to make more money even if it involves abandoning their current users. This move, like all the moves they make, is about money. Doesn't matter if they ignore their current flagship device or users. Sad but true.

Got to give it some time. My 5T sat in the box unused for a few months because no custom roms were available. Heck the 6 still doesn't even have official Lineage support.
That being said development support is the only reason I buy OnePlus.
People please understand that custom ROM development is dead!!! sure you can bootloader unlock install TWRP and mods but development will never amount to much compared to the hay days of XDA. ..it's over

I hope not. I switched to the 5T after Google dropped ended the Nexus line. Just picked up the 6T hoping devlopement would pick up like it did for the 5T. If development ends up going nowhere this will be my last OnePlus device and I go back to my hard and fast rule of not purchasing any device without Lineage support. No more hoping for it down the road.
My next Phone is a Pixel. I will sell my 6t and buy the Pixel 3 XL. Better Dev support, faster update and better Camera.

What sort of development are you guys looking for?
One+ 6T is "almost" stock android.
I came from an S8 where I was dev for the following ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/rom-googlewiz-oreo-extreme-debloat-t3750641
It took me just a few hours to have the same ROM on the 6T, including debloating some of the One+ software which is IMHO pretty useless.
So now my One+ 6T looks and feels like a Pixel.
I can try to make a flashable rom for 6T out of it but I need to study a bit ... I did most of steps manually so I don't have a flashable zip.
Let me know if there would be interest in that.

Yes. All phones launching with Oreo & above will have treble support.
Seeing as we now have a more than serviceable TWRP that can decrypt and a growing customer base of one plus users on the 6T, I would venture to guess development will be ramping up very soon.

Yep I owned a Pixel XL and OnePlus 3 at the same time almost nothing going on in the pixel section but the OP3 section was thriving plenty of development going on.
There was a time that custom roms were so much better than stock roms, but nowadays many stock roms are better. They tend to be better with cameras rather than the generic cam that comes with a custom rom, they tend to also have better battery life as the rom is usually optimized for that specific device. There are many other things. About the only reason to root nowadays is to get rid of bloat and certain system files, as well as, modding your device with various mods like majisk and substratum. So I wouldn't expect a lot in the way of custom rom development. Gone are the days of Nexus and Note 4 development. Those days were a flashaholics dream!

Thing is, it would have been a surprise if the Original Pixel (and XL) did not get Q.
Let's face facts - there are two - and only two - phone ODMs that have been keeping every phone of the past three device cycles current - not just with security updates, but with OS updates as well - Google and Apple. (That's it.) That is not merely why there is a used/refurbished Pixel market (my mom just pulled the trigger on a refurb Pixel XL), but why I pulled the trigger on my 3a last month. Pixel pricing - new or otherwise - is sane. (The 3a and 3a XL drive that point home with a sledgehammer - and especially in the US.) Unless you have a network-locked or network-specific model, you can take them to any carrier in North America. Lastly, Pixels are like utility infielders in baseball - they largely don't surprise.
I've had the beta version of q for a couple of months now. Just waiting for the official one to hopefully get rid of the few annoying bugs I have occasionally.
My phone is not rooted, completely stock. I don't care for doing that stuff anymore.
Curious - Exactly what bugs have you had?

I'm running RC2 of Q on my sargo (also dead-stock); first time I've run dead-stock Android (on anything) since Ice Cream Sandwich on a Lenovo tablet.
The reason I'm over here in Pixel XL turf is for my mom (not me) - she's joining #teampixel and specifically has a Pixel XL (refurbished) enroute. When it arrives, she is taking it to the nearest Verizon store to have her settings/apps/etc. migrated from her old phone (Samsung J3) to the Big Pixel. She's used to running dead-stock (remember, Verizon customer); however, her J3 is running Nougat- how much of a learning curve will she have with Pie?
I think most of the learning curve would be from switching from Samsung UI to stock Android.
I went from OnePlus 5 (for 2 years straight) to a Samsung s8 after I killed the OnePlus in saltwater. I didn't hate the s8 but ended up selling the s8 for a pixel XL. For most people it's what they're used to.

Worth buying?

Hi, I would like to purchase a new phone soon or later and I still cannot decide whether OP6T is worth buying, I condider OP7 more expensive and OP6T is right in price where I would expect my future phone. Can it be my new daily driver for several years? Thank you
Had same dilemma 6t or 7! for me it wasn't really much of an improvement to justify the extra picked up a mint unlocked 6T for 249 still a grate phone and will be for a while yet plenty of development going on , unless willing to shell out for the pro then 6T is the one,

I'm happy with my 6T and I haven't seen any compelling reason to upgrade to a 7 or 7 Pro. I'm running the beta, which gives me a peak at new additions before they are rolled out to the public release and my phone is running great.
The 6t is a excellent choice.
I'm loving my 6t, granted I stepped up from a Moto e4 plus.. so a big jump. I haven't really found anything that truly disappoints me to the point of wishing I had something different or newer.
Thank you so much for answers! And what about end of support, is there any year when the phone stops being supported with updates?

Considering that that OnePlus just rolled out security updates and feature updates for the OnePlus 3 thru 5 this week, I'd say you've got a few years of updates to go before EOL
I have had rooted phones since the LG g2. Stuck with LG up until I made the mistake of getting the k20 plus and, lastly the V20. LG broke too many promises. I and, others hung LG up. We were stuck with being able to trust another manufacturer and, hope that source codes, etc be released so that development could be active. I don't know if you plan to root or run mods or anything, if you do this device won't let you down. It is virtually unbrickable. Excellent daily driver that surpasses all of my previous devices.
I bought 6T and have no regrets
OnePlus 6T still rocken!

What about camera?
I too will be buying a 6T from a friend who keeps changing phones so I'm hopefully getting a good deal. Is the stock ROM great or is there some sweet custom ROMs that you think I should try? This probably the wrong thread to ask that.

Android 10

Wtf 7pro had stable 10 all ready obviously OnePlus put 6t on the back burner ? I know beta meant to come out soon but what the hell man
Well now. It's not their flagship anymore, so this is standard. Companies don't have infinite resources!
The fact is we had Android 10 betas on the 6t before 10 was released, this is unheard of outside of Google devices until now. And OP jumped right in.
They're doing great! Every OP phone I've owned has had better support than the one before so IMHO they're really working on improving themselves.

So what? It will come when it's ready. See the sensor problems on the Pixel devices. Just be patient & relax

What sensor issues. I don't have any sensor issues on my Pixel 3a XL running Android 10. I also don't see the rush for Android 10 on this device. However, I don't like not having the latest security patches.

I have the August security patch, and I'm sure the September security patch will release with the Android 10 open beta. The OP6T is well updated compared to any smartphone, with the exception of the Pixel series.

Fully agree - having the latest security patches on it is a big plus.
Regarding sensor issues google "sensor issues Android 10 Pixel" and you'll see a lot of reports about it.
Maybe Fake News .
I'll leave this here ? https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80263079&postcount=6125
Guys calm it down, we don't have super improvements since the last 3-4 years. If you need the super small improvements right away you have to buy a Google phone.
Be glad that you'll get it and be glad that oneplus has an awesome support lifetime since the 1+3
???
any idea when is lineage 17 official for op6t rollin?

Not particularly worried about this, neither particularly eager to have 10.
What I would like to know, though, is if the security updates will continue till the update to 10 or if they will stop until we will be able to update to 10.
That's what worries me.
I put 10 on my Essential PH-1...I use nova launcher and keep the 3 button standard arrangement. Not into the swipe menu stuff.
I couldn't really see any "real" difference between 9 & 10.
When it comes, I'll wait a week, just to be safe. I prefer stable over "new".
I really liked the PH-1, but the OnePlus 6T in my area has a better signal than the PH-1.
