Headphone trouble - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

I got a strange problem and honestly I ran out of idea.
I use a custom Rom, resurrection remix for Oreo. I like the Rom. But I tried to change it to another and problem is still the same. I even try Pie, and Nougat.
My problem is with the headphone jack. It's working for the phone and notification sound but not for music.
I got Bose in-ear headphone. When connected, the device start spotify, witch is fine. No music coming out of it. I unplug, music start from speaker. I connect again, no music. I try to raise the volume, doesn't change a thing. I thought my headphone was broken but I also tried with different set. Same result. After that, I was amazed to hear notification sound coming from headphones. Making I can, headphone and mic work properly.
I reinstall the Rom, try to change to another, try to flash viper, always the same result. I try 5 different Rom, for Nougat, Oreo and Pie.
I'm out of idea. Anyone got an idea?
Thanks

That's a common issue that I faced when I flashed Pixel experience rom.

Ok, but if you revert back to Oreo or nougat, does it fix it? I can't seem to be able to do that

I recently started having the same issue. Music doesn't work with the headphones jack. Checking logcat shows tons of errors related to the sound device, and these errors begin when I insert any headphones. I don't know how to diagnose these errors. But it started happening suddenly. One day the jack just stopped allowing music to pass through, and no ROM, kernel, or known-good backup has fixed the issue.
I'm gonna try restoring to 100% stock as a last resort.

Finally, i'm not alone. Have you tried music through Bluetooth? casting? speaker? For me, all this is fine. Only music through headphone is the problem.
I try with YouTube, and it become insanely slow, less than 1 frame per second.
I tried 2 different custom rom, i did try a few firmware, a complete restart. I even tried android Pie.
I'm desperate, I cannot listen to music when I work.

You are not alone! I have exactly the same symptoms: any sort of media player (PowerAmp/YT/Netflix) all progress at super slow speed. The "time remaining" counter on the player takes 3-4 real seconds to move one second on the user interface. No audio is produced at all, but any video playback becomes incredibly choppy. Bluetooth is okay. Casting is okay. External speaker and earpiece are just fine.

I just returned to 100% stock. Huge hassle.
1) Had to make a TitaniumBackup and TWRP backup.
2) Had to move everything from my sdcard to my PC.
3) Had to FASTBOOT ERASE the userdata/system/vendor/cache partitions.
4) Then had to FASTBOOT FORMAT:EXT4 the same partitions.
5) Then had to flash OOS Open Beta 18, then re-flash TWRP.
6) Headphones worked!!!!!
Now I'm putting all of my data back and restoring my backup of AospExtended (decrypted). If my headphones don't work, then I know it's the ROM and probably need to start clean. Who knows why the ROM would suddenly freak out about the headphone jack, but at least I know my issue is software.

No problem
In twrp, repair and format each partition to exf4
after that, flash from the oneplus website the latest firmware (about 1.3 gb) I used 5.1.5 (the lastest non-beta at the time)
After that, flash whatever you want and voilà

[Q] Cant hear (almost) any audio whatsoever

flashed a CM 10.2 nightly (26th) yesterday, (currently back on stock 4.3 jrwr66y) woke up this morning to my phone producing almost absolutely no audio what so ever,
the only audio i can get to make is an extremely quiet volume of sound, and that is only on the phone, which my audio comes out on the other side just as quiet regardless of how loud i speak. music, games, ect make no sound, and one of my games is giving me an error as if headphones are plugged in when they arent. also just plugging in a pair of headphones just makes the phone freeze up and become unresponsive for a couple of minutes, also just trying to change the audio levels is unresponsive and laggy
anybody have any idea what could be causing this, im at my wits end here, i just got this phone a week ago and im already having issues with it Please Help!

When you flashed between ROM's, did you do full wipes? I have read version 4.3 has caused issues with audio. Try a lower version ROM and see if that helps. And don't forget to do full wipes, and wipe a few times, before flashing.

Audio/Sound does not work, youtube doesn't play

I had the A.R.I.S.E sound mod installed and last night the audio on my nexus 6p stopped working completely, youtube won't load videos, pandora/spotify/gonemad music player all just skip songs endlessly and I was on mtc19x for the longest time, rooted and with that one mod and everything worked fine.
I also had gravitybox installed. I flashed to MTC20F and took the nougat update, I still saved all my userdata but sound doesn't work. I even updated to the newest ARISE sound mod and still nothing. Dolby atmos just crashes and no sound works at all.
I really need some help with this cause I'm at a total loss right now, I didn't do anything different yesterday and everything just broke. I also cleared the cache and turned off bluetooth and everything.
I also just went back to stock everything, still no luck after wiping it all.
Flash stock and see if your sound works.
If you've also recently flashed a custom kernel, check sound settings via a kernel manager app (ex. Ex Kernel app). It's possibñe speaker setting has been set o a negative value, causing sound not to play.

I had this same thing happen with my Nexus 5 after a year and a half, the battery started depleting in 30 minutes, I think it was the dsp in the SD800 chipset but I don't know how to test it to check if the dsp is in tact, any suggestions?

No Audio Output from 6P

Hey guys! I am not able to listen to music or open youtube videos or even do anything related to output of audio of my phone. On Google play music, I get "Couldnt pay tax requested" and on youtube I get playback error. I am not able to make calls as well.
I have flashed numerous images and the issue still persists. If anyone could guide me towards the right direction that would be great.
I bought the phone 7 months ago and suddenly this incident took place. I was running stock 7.1.2 when this happened by the way
Thank you for the help.
First of all, 7.1.2 is a Beta stage not a release.
Second, If you can have sounds on other options such as ringtones and so on, then it is an OS issue and a clean flash might solve it.

So how can you tell if it isn't a hardware issue and not Android problem?
I haven't heard of what you are describing as being a known bug in 7.1.2. You can try a factory restore but personally I would do a clean flash of the latest stable Google image and see if it fixes your problem. And I would use the flash-all.bat command like Google suggests rather than flash all the parts individually like the Heisenberg guide on XDA tells you to do. I don't suppose you are running any audio mods on your phone? And you checked the obvious? Your phone isn't in Airplane Mode, Do Not Disturb isn't activated, sound shows the various volume levels aren't at 0?
Having same issue, no audio at all from speakers, cant play youtube / googleplay music or videos, headphone jack does not work eighter, wont even detect the headphones, soft reset/ hard reset wont work, havent tryed out rooting and changing rom or reverting from 8.0 (currently running), apart form audio everything works fine, im still trying to figure out warranty as its still in its period, but without proof of purchase they are beeing jerks so far, so im rooted with some ideas is ive had previous experiences with phones, might it be possible for audio drivers to go missing or messed up? or should i take it to a repair shop and see how much theyll ask for it? or shuld i just upgrade to something better and let this brave hero die alone, maybe use as hotspot in my car haha

Audio Crashing

I apologize if this ends up being long winded, I want to lay out all the details.
So I recently purchased (what I had believed to be) second hand Nexus 6P. It is in perfect physical condition however, no signs of ever being used. Battery is great, performance is great, speakers are great, camera amazing, and screen is perfect. However two odd things started to occur which I believe stems from the same issue. When hanging up phone calls the hanging up process would hang for a long while and either eventually hang up or the system would soft reboot. After reboot notifications are still set to priority only "call management", although it is easy to adjust and bring it out of that. However no audio/mic works at all (Play Music and YouTube give an error that they cannot play). No audio from speaker, or from headphone jack. I could however connect to a Bluetooth speaker and audio plays just fine. I then went to do a proper shutdown of the phone (using the power button menu), and when I manually booted it back up all audio works find again. I plug in headphones and start listening to music on Play Music. After a while however, playback fails and all the audio on the phone is once again dead...queue soft reboot. And repeat the whole process again. If I'm listening to headphones and I do anything to activate the microphone, audio crashes and go through the whole process again.
So I decided to make sure it was all up to date all the way to OTA 7.1.2. Once I did and I tested, the same issues above occurred over time. So then I thought maybe if I used Nexus Root Toolkit and did a full manual wipe and reinstall of 7.1.2 factory image from Google. Phone issue initially went away, but audio playback through headphones persisted and eventually the phone issue manifested itself again.
Today I decided that I do a full wipe again and try and install Pure Nexus 7.1.2, non rooted with BeanGapps and vender image (following the entire process here to a T.) I have not been able to replicate phone issues, however the audio playback and headphones issues are easily repeatable.
TL;DR - So this leaves me with a few things;
1. I can use the phone by never connecting it to external audio source perfectly fine, no problems at all.
2. Phones calls may sometimes get stuck at hanging up, and the result is a crashed audio system.
3. The only way to temporarily solve this issues is to shutdown via holding down lock button and Power-off using the menu that appears. And then manually starting the phone back up again.
So I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue. The fact that it persists between full wipes and reinstall of different roms makes me think it to be hardware. Although the temporarily fix of proper shutdown and manually start back up makes me think the OS/Kernal is somehow "clearing a buffer" or something in it's proper shutdown process. Which without doing leads to the audio system being completely down. Therefore on soft/dirty reboots the audio system is still down.
As an added bonus my sim card was a Micro SIM, before I opted to take the scissors to it instead of buying a nano sim. It works (so I thought), it just doesn't fit in the tray quite right. I tested recently with a proper nano sim from a different phone, and everything worked perfect. Then I swapped my franken sim back in and...it worked perfectly fine.
I did search for this issues in previous posts but all I could find was this. The issue (s)he describes is exactly the same issue as me, but his/her solution does not seemed to have worked. I am inclined to try doing a full wipe again and flashing completely stock older version though.
Any help, suggestions, etc are greatly appreciated. And thanks to the developers of Pure Nexus, it seems to be very polished and I'd love to use it daily driver.
Since you are having the issue after a clean install of stock and a clean install of Pure Nexus I don't see how it could be anything but a hardware issue. You could try to flash a custom kernel if you really think the kernel is an issue but I doubt that it will do much good. You could also try a clean flash of a different rom (I recommend Dirty Unicorns which is very smooth and stable) but again I doubt that it will do much good since you seem to have a hardware issue. You might have bad memory which is getting cleared when you reboot the phone.
I fear you may be correct. When you talk about bad memory, I don't want to misconstrud what your trying to say. Would there be a buffer for the DAC for example that is bad? Or do you mean the RAM or the flash memory itself?
It is very disappointing. This phone is perfect otherwise. I'd like another 6P, but I am concerned I then get one with battery issues.

Weird problems with nexus 6p

Hello.
My friend got a nexus 6p one year ago. One month ago he started to have problem. He was on stock rom
-First when he pressed the touch screen he heard small weird noises (hard to describe)
Then progressively :
-Speaker stopped working
-he could not play youtube video in you tube app : a weird error message (every time different) appeared. Gallery videos don't work as well
-But weirdly enough video played in the web browser including youtube videos, works, still without sound.
-He cannot make calls
-Jack plug doesn't works either, but he can use his Bluetooth headphones
We tried to install a custom rom (lineage os). We succeeded, but the above problem appeared again.
Then we flashed the factory image https://developers.google.com/android/images for nexus 6p. We also succeed but the above problem appeared again.
Thanks in advance for your help

The 6P has two speakers, and they wouldn't both fail at the same time. Sounds like he's damaged the phone somehow. The audio jack and speaker output both not working seem to back this up. I've seen the headphone jack part available separately, and there are guides available to replace it. Before flagging it as a hardware issue and opening the phone up, you want to make sure you wiped the phone completely by formatting the partitions (system, userdata, cache) and use the flash-all.bat included with the full Google image. There is a remote chance it is software related, but I doubt it.
You could always flash a custom kernel, use a kernel manager app to turn off the large core cpu and see if the problems go away. If they do its related to the build problem that causes the 6P to boot loop but those particular symptoms aren't familiar. It's still worth a try if flashing the stock image doesn't fix the problem.

Yes. You can always turn it back on but turning it off apparently fixes the permanent boot loop problem on the Nexus 6P. If the problems you are describing are related to the same build problem then turning it off might make them go away. Sometimes people's phones would start acting odd before going into the permanent bootloop. That phone could be on its way there.
this is purely a guess but the problem may be hardware related with the headphone jack. it could have a physical short somewhere. if thats the case the device may think a headphone jack is being used and wont play through speakers because its being told its plugged in. But wont play because of some physical short or an open.
