The ROM can be updated through the Updater app, a previous backup is recommended.
It need nougat. Mi5s isnt even half year old, but its lagging in updates and treated like step child. But any update is good and I believe mi5s will be loved again by xiaomi.
Patience, they are working on Nougat for Mi 5 first. I guess once that is out, the Mi 5s will be one of the next.
You would think they would update the Mi5S first as it's their flagship device.
It's not, the Mi Mix is their flagship
Also it's better to offer for the phones with older hardware, as that means the driver developers had more time to write the new drivers.
Mi Mix is a niche phone almost a tablet, they sell far more of the Mi5 5s etc they should be concentrating on them first rather than older devices. Will put me off buying Xiaomi again if this is how it goes.
The likes of Oneplus already have Nougat on the 3 and 3T .

I imagine part of the problem is the sheer volume of devices Xiaomi release. The Mi5 is not even 1 year old yet, and they have released numerous phones since, including the Mi5s just 6 months later.
For an example of how many new devices require updates, here is what Xiaomi released in 2016 alone (according to Wikipedia):
Mi4s
Mi5
Mi5s
Mi5s Plus
Mi Note 2
Redmi 3
Redmi 3 Prime
Redmi 3x
Redmi 3s
Redmi 4
Redmi 4a
Redmi 4 Prime
Redmi Note 3
Redmi Note 4
Redmi Note 4x
Redmi Pro
Mi Max
Mi Max Prime
Mi Mix
Mi Band 2
MiBox
OnePlus by comparison have released only 2 devices, and they have very similar hardware.
And most of those released phones in 2016 have different CPUs, displays, cameras, GPUs and so on, all of those parts need drivers written for Nougat by the manufacturer and then implemented, tested, fixed, ... by Xiaomi and the manufacturer.

battery is great. sd625 works good enough for me. may be mi max 4. for now I'll stick with max 2.
word, same here plus, we have custom roms, something the MM3 will have to wait for for at least half a year.

Maybe it will not take so long for custom roms.
The Mi Max 3 specs state it will come with Android 8.1.
If this is true it will be factory "treble-enabled" and custom roms will show up a lot faster.
this is china model, right? any issue using it oustide china (apart from frequencies).
i mean google play will be available just fine, correct?

this would be my first xiaomi. cant use < 6" phone anymore, they are tiny!
in theory, yes. as long as the devs are willing to haul ass and use treble for custom roms

me also slow very update. i have also redmi note 5 and like it more because every week or next always update
Mi Max 2 is still new. It's specs are still wonderful.
MM2 custom ROM scene has just matured.
I see no reason to upgrade just yet.
Never understood the urge to upgrade as soon as something new is released, especially when the current one working well.
I have had a mi max 1 and a mi max 2. Just ordered a mi 8, want to try a high spec phone for a change
No need to upgrade now even if max 3 is better than max 2 in many ways
1) 5g enabled chipsets will be available next year, around mid 2019 so it will be a waste to buy a phone now that will become old in just 6-10 months
2)its a personal preference but i hate the new aspect ratio designs the old 16:9 is the best as content available now is mostly by default in this ratio
3) Snapdragon 625 is more than adequate for any task / 636 is a very good upgrade but i want more power efficiency than performance. ie i want it to give more battery life than get performance
4) would love if the max series drops the LCD screen and opt for an AMOLED, more battery man?
5) as we are talking about replacing the display also remove the abomination called hybrid sim tray **** hybrid i want 2 sim and a card like the good old days of cell phones not this *****y pile of ****

agree with all of the above haha although i doubt that 5g networks will be operational anytime soon, especially not in a manner that has sufficient coverage (i.e. outside of capital / major cities).

No. No sense xD
Thanks to Mi Max 3, I just bought a Max 2 as my secondary device, my main one is HTC U11. Amazing battery life !!

Agreed, given that:
1/ Xiaomi has promised to deliver MIUI 10 for total 28 devices (some released back in 2015)
2/ Mi max equipped with Snapdragon 625, which also built in a plentiful of Xiaomi devices in 2017 and also 2018 (Redmi note 4, mi max 2, Redmi note 4X, Redmi 5 plus, Redmi 6 pro (Mi A2 lite), Mi5X (Mi A1), Redmi Y2, redmi 4 prime etc..)
I'm strongly believe that Xiaomi has a very good way of optimizing the Snapdragon 625 and the Max 2 will have the support for years to come.
For the new Mi Max 3, Xiaomi screwed up with the anti-rollback issue and disabling the flashing of Global rom on a Chinese rom phone and vice versa. It can brick if someone does it. There is a workaround posted in the guide section of Max 3 by omer919, but you can't use normal OTA updates anymore. Not sure how long this method will be supported, since it's not a custom-ROM based solution.
Global market (Mi Max 3) phones do NOT come with 6GB/128GB configuration. (At least so far that I know of.)
Big screen, very generous battery and infra-red are the only reason I like the Mi Max series, but the latest Xiaomi policy to prevent using exchanged ROM in the Max 3 puts me off.
So, after all these, are people STILL interested in getting the Max 3?

well this sux big time. did some research into this and its understandable why xiaomi is doing it, but also veeery annoying for enthusiast users... one more reason to love the hardware but refrain from flashing MIUI. just update the firmware and run custom AOSP based ROMs aside from that the MM3 is basically the only phone id consider buying, aside maybe from the poco f1...

greetings
just received my new mi max 3 (64/4 GB chinese version with latest china developer rom) and im thinking of keeping my lovely max 2 guys
build quality is a step back in many way:
feels noticeably heavier and thicker in hand than max 2
power and volume buttons are a little hard to press
screen is bright more than u need+washed out colors = max 2 screen quality is way better for me
its notification LED is a joke! so smaller and poor light and still white color only!not visible and usable at all in days
full screen gestures always has annoying stutter even with more powerful chipset
battery life is a bit shorter than max 2 (overall one hour less SOT for my daily use)
no scratch resistent screen = scratched mine in just one day!
the only thing is about cameras and new chipset .really a huge upgrade in picture quality+video recording with EIS + selfie camera with LED light
After seeing a lot of ports from other devices such as Pocophone f1, redmi note 5 pro , redmi note 6 got Oxygen OS Custom ROM. I thought why can't we get one for our device. Really would love to see it running on our device. Oxygen os is so fast compared even to the stock one
Go and replay the thear and Reach out the dev to. Do it
It is somewhat complicated, beginning why our 'microhornito', is substantially manipulated by Xiaomi
What do we think of the new device launching in two days time.. Who is jumping ship to the new device? Really like a folding Huawei Mate X but the price is way way too high so I am thinking of going from Mi Max 3 to Mi Max 4

Launch in 2 days?
Enviado desde mi MI MAX 3 mediante Tapatalk
I'll be happy to upgrade to Mi Max 4 Pro and a couple of months
Well, we are not sure if it is launching.
I hope it is. Specs look good.
Got tired of Ulefone Power 5 beast, and better camera would also help. I'm also looking at Vivo V15 pro and Oppo Reno...
Well, nice phone indeed! ?
Now what? Cash waiting....
Going foward, the implementation of ARB has soured my Mi Max experience.
2 days are over...where was the launch?
In the toilet it seems. Never had this need for new phone before. Not a biggie, right? Now I'm being desperate. The Power 5 was really too much overkill.
I will gladly upgrade if the camera comes out good.
Rumors say 48Mpx Samsung for base version, 48Mpx Sony for Pro version. It is also a point in my decision. The issue is timing. We might be waiting MONTHS for this. Who knows... I started to look around.
That's it... Too bad, Xiaomi! Ordered Vivo V15 Pro already.
Never touch Mobile without 5G. Simple.
Haha, in our country, data is bloody expensive. Normal volumes are like 1-3GB /month, more is too premium. That is like my daily consumption, or rather more. Pathetic. Therefore most of the time, I'm on wi-fi, or PC... Therefore 5G is close to useless here. Who wants to pay hundreds $ just for little youtube....
Read somewhere Mi Max 4 will be officially released in India on 17 July 2019. Screen is 7.2 inches with resolution of 1080 X 2340 with 351 PPI, tear-drop notch and no bezels.
Anyone else able to confirm this?

Before you get out of hand nerding out wait until we see a Tenaa certification or NCC that will more closely give an indication of what to expect..
Just look how the Mi max 3 pro got out of hand to end up just being vaporware

yes it was allegedly certified by ncc aimed for the European market but somehow the document was pulled or fake.. by who nobody knows, or even cared to investigate and the ceo later apologized and deterred the rumors that a mi max 3 pro was in the making.
It lead to being listed both at Qualcomm website and xiaomi cn page and a cn retailer with pre-order info and later pulled from Qualcomm and xiaomi website without an explanation.
If it was even made then pulled from production plans or if it was pure vaporware nobody knows as xiaomi did not disclose any further information other than confirming that there was no mi max 3 pro

Yes, i too.
Mi Max series is discontinued:
https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_not_planning_new_mi_max_and_mi_note_phones_this_year-news-37720.php
Terrible news. Just gonna have to hang on to this for as long as possible so as I don't know any other real alternatives.
undecided which one to buy what are your suggestion
at least how does the Mi Mix 3 5G compare with the K20 pro
if the Mi note 10 would had snapdragon 855 without thinking i would have got that one
9T Pro for sure, it gets a lot of development while Mi Mix 3 is cool and all but development wise it's getting forgotten very fast and it's kind of heavy.
Mi Note 10 on the other hand seems to have great cameras and should be even better whith Gcam but the speakers are poor and it's got a mid end SOC.
All 3 are good but that's just my opinion.
The K20 Pro is getting treated like it's a flagship by Xiaomi, even though Redmi is supposed to be a second tier brand. Almost everyone on the K20 test group has Android 10 MIUI 11 and they got it before any of the other global devices got MIUI11. That's a real slap in the face when you are walking around with the "flagship" product in your pocket.
I see a LOT of people complaining about the CC9T and problems with the software in the global beta groups. I can't speak to the Mi Note 10 as I haven't had any note products. I have the Mix 3 CN 8/256, and the only other Xiaomi device I have is a Mix 2s (which has a broken cellular modem). I think Xiaomi makes cool hardware, and it's been fun messing with MIUI on a truly working device now for almost two years. However, I would say at this point if you don't need dual sim or something else they bring to the table, the best Android experience is Google Pixel. I have all 3 of the XL models as well, and they are hands down the best. I have really been enjoying carrying a single device with my work and personal SIMs in it, but having to fight with Google Pay and Airwatch for work (I can fix Pay with Magisk, but that deletes my work profile no matter what I do on every reboot), is making me seriously consider going back to a two device setup.
