I think no. I've tried it without success. But, the Octopus App has many other problems. And since the 7.1 update it does not work completely (Crash at start). That's the reason why Octopus is not working with Android TV. It's very limited, I had to do a lot things with my "Touch4" Apps for AndroidTV (Touch4Gamepad for TV, ...) to make Touch Emulation with Gamepad, Keyboard/Mouse and Wii Remote possible. There are many hurdles to take, and yes it's possible, but as a developer very complicated

What dose rooting do
That's quite an open question. General rule of thumb is, if there is something you need your tablet to do, and it can do it, but not from the factory, then you need root.
I've just now come across a situation where I need root... my SNES emulator does not read the external_sd folder, so the solution would be to mount that directory inside a folder that is readable by the emulator, like /sdcard/external_sd/, but that can only be done with root.

The largest advantage to rooting your tab is you can use it as a remote global thermo nuclear weapon!
Do you know of anyone that you'd like to get rid of permanantly?
Root your device, set the timer, and leave it at their house.......and run like h3ll!
hack the heck out of it!!!!!

It gives you administrative permissions to the device you bought. With stock OS you are limited as to what you can do with the device. Rooting opens the door to very wide almost limit free stage for your device. I personally do not root but so many others prefer it.

It can make your phone/tablet/system unique... You can customize each and every aspect of your android gadget. It gives you the power (and the administrative rights) to do so.... BUT if you have no idea of what you're doing and/or what apps you install better leave it stock... It can easily render your tablet hard bricked...... forever......
IT IS NOT A TOY!!!!

For me its all about backup and networking hacks
My initial reason was I needed my tablet to be able to access an AdHoc wireless network because that is what my phone sets up for its mobile hotspot. I have since moved on to many other uses. In fact if you wonder about these forums you will find that most of the really cool things seem to involve root access in some way or another.
seems like there are so many ways to root some say u need sim card other sayu dont I want to root was wondering the best way to do it I see so many cool thing I like on here they all need rooting so confusing
If you have the stock 3.2 software, then you follow the guides to downgrade to 3.01, root, then install the rooted 3.2 rom. If you're on software pre+3.2, use Iconiaroot
For me.. I initially "rooted" my tablet (hrmm.. that just feels so wrong to type..) simply because the latest OTA update was refusing to download and rather than stuff about trying to figure out why & work around it I figured it was just as easy to root & flash a new rom..
Since then though, I don't think I could live without it .. Loving the flexibility of being able to move away from the stock Acer set-up and run custom ROMS to suit my needs, to be able to overclock it, be able to browse/modify/etc as I please within the filesystem (of course, this is one of those situations in which at least a little understanding of what you're doing is vital - there's a good reason why they protect system files from the average user..) and just generally tinker with things!
I root because it is my tablet, I bought it so I can do with it what I want and not be limited by the vendor toughts. It is nice to overclock, use drivemount and connect ntfs HD to my tablet and watch the movies on it,titaniumbackup,cwm,nandroidbackup,etc......

Hi,
I successfully flashed Full Android v2.2 (many thanks zulu99) but now cannot proceed with logging into Play Store or with adding an account (via settingcs>account). I'm able to successfully navigate the add email, password stage of the process but just cannot get to the "Accept" button on the accept terms & conditions screen either via USB keyboard or controller or Shield remote
Can anyone please help solve this or confirm if they have faced similar issues?
Many thanks.

When I had a problem such as this I reflashed the entire system with a recovery package, but replaced the "system.img & recovery.img" with the modded version.
1. you need to sign up as a developer to download the 2.1.0 recovery package
Nvidia's download center
you will be be asked to log in or sign up as a developer which is completely free.
2. Unzip the package & replace the system.img & recovery.img with the modded version & boot into bootloader
then run the "flash-all" script
This should fix any issues you may have had
Thanks Xstar 410
Essentially re-install the ROM from scratch then....
I was hoping to avoid that but happy to give it a go
What beats me is that pretty much everything else works fine and I'm able to highlight radio buttons/ change preferences and such like using either the external keybord/ controller/remote or a combunation of the 3. It's only with signing into my account that I face a challenge - and that too on the last screen prior to login ...
started from scratch and flashed recovery image and flashed system.img from the Full Android v2.2 ROM - same issue - stuck on the sign in page . . . !
cannot get to the "Accept" button to proceed/complete sign in process .........
Any suggestions please?
Solved
Used a mouse - does the trick.
My daughter actually pointed out that I was being a bit silly by not trying out this option!
I should have mentioned that the remote & gamepad won't connect normally so you must use a keyboard & mouse for the modded version.

Now you gawn and messed up my "big damn hero" moment
Thanks Xstar410.
Got there finally
Thanks Banderos101 - the rate at which I'm progressing, there are bound to be many 'big damn hero' moments
I just initially thought there was a connectivity problem which i had before & so that's why I suggested the reflash, but the only thing I could connect was the remote & NOT the controller...so that's the only downside for now.

controller only works with wired connection only wifi/bluethooth dont work..yet also voice search was probably disabled & you should download the google app that offers voice search
Hi, I hate creating new threads for asking questions, but I tried looking for a solution and couldn't find any. Back when I used to have android 4.2.2 I used the app sixaxis controller without issues. Now that I tried it again it won't work due to PIE position independent executable. Is there a way to remove it, bypass it, or something alike to flahs and make my phone work again with this app? Tried flashing a zip that supposedly worked on another phone and it just created a bootloop. Thanks in advanced.
i was hoping i could implement this.
someone already made a patch for our device on the github link
it would be nice if someone compiled the kernel with the specific selinux changes so it doesn't have to be completely disabled
not sure what is done already in the available moto x pure patch
any input appreciated, i'm a noob when it comes to modifying kernels
just want to make sure its done right, and request compiling the latest LOS13 kernel with modifications.
https://github.com/pelya/android-keyboard-gadget
i'm still on the june 2, LOS13 rom
the kernel reports as:
3.10.102-CM-ga7d46cc8b84-dirty [email protected] #1

the main reason i want it is because it allows you to plug your cell phone into a pc with usb cable and your phone acts as a hardware keyboard without needing an app on the computer.
this is a feature i have wanted since windows mobile 6.5 went away...which worked elegantly for me back in the day.
i didn't have to lug around a keyboard and mouse for work, which i use daily, and have since i went android around 2007/08
i've been patient for years and here it is, and already pretty much ready for our current device.
just need someone to compile it, i dont currently have a linux box or use linux regularly.
Mhm... I'll take a look at this patch.
Ok, you can try it https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120759729 . This kernel includes android-keyboard-gadget.patch + modified selinux policy. I will release soon up-to-date LOS13 build with this patch included.
whoa, you da man
not working
installed boot.img from fastboot
rooted
installed app from market (usb-keyboard by pelya)
app freezes when plugged in to usb and then try and use the mouse pad in the app
unplug usb and mouse pad unfreezes
tried manually using terminal as su to disable selinux and chmod 666 /dev/hidg0 /dev/hidg1
app still didn't work
i am using the recommended hacker keyboard input panel
tried usb debugging on & off
let me know any ideas or if you need me to test something specifically if you are willing to have a look
got it working
had to choose 'midi input device' as selection for android usb notification dialog
'usb for charging' & 'usb file transfer' modes do not work

I wanted to use a carplay device with my car . for this purpose I installed a firmware upgrade in order to unable to installation of applications.
After the upgrade, access to files on USB was lost .
Upgrade was taken from here :
That means that before an upgrade, I was able to listen to the music from USB stick via builtin media player. After the upgrade, media player does not see the USB.
For the same reason, carplay app doesnot see the device attached to USB port.
The strange thing is that I can see the files via file explorer ( from the head unit) , they are available at /storage/udisk.
so from one side the unit can see the USB and files, but from other side applications cant see it .
What can be the problem and possible solution ?
The details about versions :
car type : Mitsubishi Outlander 2016
MGCOL_MITSU1
Android version
4.4.2
Baseband version
MPSS.TR.1,0-01780-M8626AAAAANAZM
Kernel version
3.4.0

Permissions... file managers generally have global permissions.
Check through settings under storage and individual apps. That's my guess.

yes , I was thinking about it too.
The problem that when I want to change permissions via this file explorer , I got the error message that I am not root . but I do .
How can I be sure that I do root , or alternatively how to change permissions ?

Many times if a app is well coded and needs special permissions it will ask for them during installation. Sometimes they can be set after the fact. Try looking in accessibility.
I haven't played with Kitkat in years but generally it's pretty straight forward. I don't root so know very little on that side. ABD editing might be another option but my knowledge of that is very limited.
Try doing a bunch of Google searches for similar problems with Kitkat storage. The device doesn't have to be the same. You can find solutions many time by cross referencing other devices even platforms.
Many issues are long standing
After the initial search for each parameter, add XDA at the end to find posts here about it easily.
Doing searches for solutions is how I first learned of XDA many years ago

Ummm, I take OTG support for granted... but does your OS/device support it?
Maybe this is the issue?
Incompatible format on the card?
Try formatting card in the device then load data preferably with that device.
Swapping cards between devices can cause issues if each device is writing to it. Haven't seen it happen on Androids but Canon cams, hell yeah.

I tried several cards , small and big , formatted in a different ways.
And my device worked in the past , it is something that happened after the upgrade

It's rooted?
If it was a OTA upgrade I normally say factory reset time. In your case, not sure that's the right thing to do.
It's not the cards, it's settings or firmware I think it's safe to say.
Try clearing the system cache and a hard reboot.
Try in safe mode to rule out a rogue 3rd party app. Try clearing the data in the associated system apks.
Sometimes poorly coded 3rd party apps can toggle hidden user settings that remain even after uninstall. It's rare but quit the horror when it happens. Scruntinize the apps you installed.
One other irritating thing I've seen happen is clearing the data of a system appd in settings doesn't always remove presumably null marks. When I cleared the data with my package disabler, it fixed the problem.
Saved me a factory reset.
Fun isn't it? Been running down some glitches on my N10+'s, eventually you'll sort it out.
Keep at it over the course of a few days, weeks...
