I have an LG V20, thats the sprint version. I'm on the March 1st 2018 security patch. Id like to install a custom rom to increase game performance, but i have no clue where to start. Can someone give me an idea what to look for? Any good roms?

You don't. Thank Sprint for making the LS997 the most locked down variant and unrootable past the very old version ZV7 with a negligible chance of ever becoming rootable again.
For all the other v20 variants, which are still rootable, there are several guides for different variants, just search xda for the thread for your variant.

It's probably legit but the key is in the first step, you have to unlock the bootloader. Currently there is no way to do that therefore it's a no go.

No, their guide on unlocking the bootloader is wrong and won't work on any v20. It's a joke, they took the generic steps and assumed they worked.

Hey,
I got the LG G6 H870DS version, i didn't know it has a locked bootloader
Is there any way to override the issue and install a custom rom or am i doomed with the stock rom?
You're doomed I'm afraid. The chance LG will make you able to unlock it in the future is slim to none.
is the h870ds with locked bootloader rootable with kingroot?
I have the european model with unlocked bootloader, but I prefer the dual sim model, I offer straight swap to anyone interested

I've not tried it, don't blame me...

Complete BS.
That video is essentially an ad for his YouTube channel then descriptions for a generic unlocker. He even says in the video this tool is only good if your phone is rootable. Don't waste your time.

LOL no disrespect to bgumble though !! Thanks for posting this !
OKAY so
I'm very late to the party, everyone is already settled in and or leaving.
I'm wondering about how is the ROM/Recovery/Kernel development going for this phone? Is it still going? do aspiring developers and geniuses still work on this device or have they already moved on? Do we have daily-driver worthy AOSP ROM? Does anyone still maintain a stock custom ROM?
Basically, i'm about to get a V20 to replace my Z5 and I want to know how fun this phone to satisfy my flashingitis

If you have looked in development section you will have noticed that the development for this phone is basically dead. It is a great device for a great price currently but most devs have moved on to the newer phones to work on.

Hopefully your device will come with an older security patch that will allow you to root. Shut off auto update in developer mode when you get it until your sure of what you've got. And don't install any system updates until also or you may lose the opportunity to root.

Yeah.. not much is happening, I saw unofficial lineageOS, weekly LineageOS, couple of Roms, Kernels and Recoveries
I honestly don't know how much development is "healthy", Manufacturers have released too many phones too quickly and devs switching to new devices.
I dont know anymore

They do for the unlocked US996, and the H918 can be unlocked with fastboot, but no flash command, so it is pretty useless. The H910 is the only carrier branded model that can still be rooted on the latest firmware version. Well, more to the point, it can be rolled back to a version that IS rootable because AT&T hasn't incremented ARB on it yet.

AH, so if i want to flash custom ROM on it, i will have to find US996 variant, or H910. Otherwise, not much we can do.
got it.
the official one released in my country, Indonesia, is the dual sim H990DS one, i should avoid that and find for second hand US996 variant instead.
yeah i was hoping root can be found for the H918 10q.. but it appears that may never happen..

I ALMOST pulled the trigger for H918, it works with my country's 4G band and it's cheaper than other models, comes with box. Glad I asked first
ON ANOTHER TOPIC, hey jaws, how's the LG Watch Urbane 2 with custom strap going?
Wait, remind me again. if H918 has no flash command on fastboot and can't be rooted, how is it possible that there's LineageOS for H918
All my knowledge is for verizon version, which didnt have an unlocked bootloader, but i rooted using dirty santa, was a pain but once i got root was all good. There is a stock flashable once rooted to answer ur 1st post, and kdz to stock phone files if you mess up dirty Santa like i did 1st time. All the stuff needed, stock boot.img's, custom/stock kernel variants, roms, etc is out there just gotta dig a bit. Is an excellent phone imo, especially if youre into high quality audio. Quad dac is a beast. A shame how little of support it got. It still compares to the new phones coming out now. Imo

I'm happy as long as i can get root, and flash different ROMs, I dont mind complicated method involving command lines. It reminds me of good ol' Desire HD days with S-OFF.
I guess development is not very lively but some people do work on interesting stuffs.
Good enough for me.
I guess this is one of the few phones the verizon version has a slight advantage. Almost all the KDZ files are available, and all downgradeable (for now). Personally I have bounced back and forth almost daily between full un-root, to root access, etc. Don't ask why, no idea.
Development is pretty minimal, which is a bit sad. But it seems to work great, rather than the ole days when development here on XDA basically was a must for a phone to function.
I have already flashed my h871 (at&t) to h873 using LGUP (partition dl). I heard that TMobile uses different software so I am curious.
Did you have any luck with this? I recently switched to T-Mobile and am using my AT&T G6

No, I didn't. I'm afraid of bricking my phone.

The answer is: yes it will brick, and currently there is no way to recover from such a brick.
Good thing you didn't try

Ah really? Glad I didn't lol. Will I ever get OTA software updates? Also, do you know why it would brick exactly?
Thanks!
I know nothing about ota updates, especially not in the case of usa models.
It will brick because tmo ordered an extensive security package from LG. Their phones can not be flashed with any other bootloaders from other models, neither can other models flash tmo bootloader.
If you do you'll have a hard-brick. Nothing can be done, it's out of our hands, only LG/TMO could fix it.

Ah I see! One last question, does h873 support wifi calling?
Hi,im using a couple phone,ip8 and an LG G4 LS991,i love lg but things that i hate is this g4 is the bootloader cant be unlock coz my device antirollback was v4 and i cant root or modifying the phone.
Looking for a month but many thread say the v4 cant be bootloader unlocked.
So...
I want buy a brand new LG V20 or a Refurbish one,but thing that i want to know,is there a version of the V20 that the bootloader cant be unlock and have a antirollback version like the LG G4 LS991???
Please answer me,your ans very helpful, after solved ill delete the thread.
Huge Thanks.
Whatever you do, don't EVER buy a phone from Sprint. You really should stay away from ALL carriers, but if you must buy a carrier branded phone -- T-Mobile is the only choice.
For now, the LS997 (Sprint V20) is the only model that can't be rooted.

Sorry if its too much of a 'newb' question, but I've been reading up on this for days, and I'm still not sure, if there is an exploit for the h81220x (Marshmallow, Fido/Rogers(?)) variation of the LG G4. I've seen messages from 2017 that say "not yet, for this one anyway", so it's all quite confusing. I only want to install a ROM with as late a version of Android as possible (beyond MM). I know the bootloader is hard as nails to crack, and there are alternatives, like "USU", and one wrong move and this thing goes into a permanent bootloop. So is it now doable for a Fido-branded G4 with the H81220X firmware installed, and if so, which would be the best / safest method to go with? Thanks!
