A very sad moment for the the legendary note5 - Galaxy Note5 General

I don't what to say but feel really sad about this awesome phone hope devs keep it alive.
https://www.phonearena.com/news/sam...dge-plus-no-monthly-security-updates_id108499

I feed sad cause i bought this phone and wasted my money.
The released it with android 5 when the market was already with android 6 and only update it to 7.
Since then only security updates...
WHAT A SHAME FOR A FLAGSHIP DEVIDE.

That's It For Me And Non-Vanilla Android.
I had already gotten rid of my Galaxy S, and just now sold my Vibrant.
Going back to my old jailbroken iPhone and will likely buy the Nexus S on Thursday.
For the past few months, I've been reliving my WM6 days, flashing, then running into some little annoying issue, then flashing again, and again.
Manufacturers like Samsung and branding-crazy carriers like Verizon are ruining Android. They f**k the OS up, then delay updates, or simply never update their proprietary drivers.
Never again, for me.
I like the OS, Gingerbread looks like it's finally a mature product, so I'll give the Nexus S a try. But geez, I hate the bastards wrecking the OS and making updates impossible.
Thanks to the developers here, they do a great job making a crippled phone work better.
End of rant.
P.S. Ah, well. This was meant for the Vibrant section, but I can't delete it from here now....

Glad to see you made the leap, a phone without long term updates just isn't a real phone

Will Nexus S be like SGS? (in many ways)

I'm gonna rant a little about Samsung hope they or any1 her won't be offended, because in my opinion things like these might. Well I bought my SGS in the summer of 2010 with Eclair 2.1, got it running 2.2.1 now, (thanks XDA for your support!)...and i'm starting to wonder about Samsung's ability to keep users up to date with the latest information about their devices; so it's like the latest update was JPY in December, the same month Gingerbread 2.3 was released (if i'm not mistaken) and announced on the new Nexus S, and from that point they have failed to make a statement about SGS's future everybody is like "Yeah it might..." it's kind of the 512 RAM thing... maybe it's there but you can be entitled to all of it just 339 or 315 (with no specification whatsoever) or who knows what other values users see... I also know some people are working on private projects like supercurio's 2.3 on SGS but he's just only one guy... so it's very tricky to do all that stuff and get it all right in a short time, i got nothing but respect for him, but i would like the techheads at samsung just do their thing and come up with a new release of 2.3. If Nexus S will depend on Samsung's ability to release OS's then that will be bummer...cuz your stuck with something that's a treat for a few months...then when the next update will get released Samsung's gonna be like... "Uhm we don't know if Nexus S's ganna get 2.4 or whatever but hey look at this other phone we just released isn't it shiny? and it has 2.4!" (UUU shiny) I know how marketing works... but forcing customers to buy a new handset with a hardware configuration that resembles the previous, but with an updated OS is not an inspired decision. So the conclusion is Android phones are great with great capabilities as long as they are in tune and keept up to date and the manufacturers RESPECT their brand's name guarantee for that specific product...otherwise keep on buying china clones with android ported os just joking i don't think there's something like that... yet. (Android 2.4 is just fictional just to make a point). All the rants are welcomed here

I think i understand what you ate trying to say. It would be really disappointing if sgs doesnt go beyond 2.3. A personal example would be my pc(intel).... Started with xp, went on to vista and now 7. Even though i series processors are out my pc can still hande the latest os. So i hope samsung doesnt leave us stranded with this great piece of hardware. They can surely come out with new hardware but they shouldnt leave a phone which has sold over 10 million pieces. That would be a bad strategy.

I think it will go beyond 2.3 but it's gonna be a really long journey just to get 2.3 cuz of corporate business
I think these companies would be smart to try and keep up the software on devices for at least a couple of years. Most people aren't going to upgrade hardware every year so yeah like you are saying introducing the shiny new device with new software that isn't coming to last year's device just pisses people off. Since most are going to look to upgrade every 2 years or so, keeping the software up for about that long would be a good strategy to get repeat customers.
They will remain a standard for some time... but in that time we're supposed to be like those dudes in the commercials; happy and amazed... but that amazement kinda fades away in a couple of months cuz manufacturers fail to implement developers completed and ready software in useful time... i mean those geeks at google work so hard that in some months time they have a new and uptated OS and it has to hit the manufacturers time barrier for being implemented into specific devices (Samsung's case) ... i mean c'mon man when a new OS is released put your hands on it modify it if necesary and put it on the device in a couple of weeks don't make us wait very long for something that's not that complicated to do, they make us feel like that stuff is rocket science when it's NOT! it's really an unecessary wait.

General irritation on Samsung/ICS/Android

Today is pretty much a sad day for Samsung, ICS and Android in general, in my opinion.
Androids latest version, ICS, has been released about 5 months ago. Today, the most important Android device available on the planet, has not yet seen an update to this latest version yet, and I think that is something to be ashamed of. As a pretty normal user, I don't know and don't really care how much development goes on before releasing a new version, but a company that sells 300 million handsets in a year (of which at least 20 million of this type of handset that have cost the user somewhere between 400 and 550 euro's) I expect some more dedication to deliver a finished product worthy of it's name, fame and money. Google should be very upset that their latest product stays more or less hidden from public for about 6 months in this high paced market because multi-billion multinationals choose to dedicate too few people to get the software side of things sorted out.
All the false rumours don't really add to the experience of having a top-end device. Countless piles of crap have been pushed out by various dubious sources simply because Samsung does not wish to pin itself to a date. They knew, that people would have been outraged if they had stated in october that ICS would be released on the Android phone as much as half a year later. Instead, they let the irritation smolder and only give some vague hints once or twice during the whole period.
In my opinion, smartphone use is not as much about hardware as many of the Android manufacturers and users would like to see. The race for top specs will probably look quite ridiculous a few years from now. The secret to having an amazing device has it's foundation in good hardware (not neccesarily top notch hardware though) and esthetics/design, but without proper software this foundation will still be only a foundation. Nobody likes to own the best foundation in the world when there are no walls, windows, furniture, household appliances and great looks and functionality to make the living pleasureable. Off course, Samsung does provide us with all that in some way or another, but it is lagging behind seriously, especially compared to the competing major OS'es.
Naturally, every Android user has the possibility to blast everything off the foundation and build something custom on it, being either Samsung stuff with some extra things and paint added or removed, or being prefab Cyanogenmod or MIUI or whatever, but unfortunately this argument is worth almost nothing since it is again Samsung who decides when the bits and pieces become available for custom building, and this is lagging even further behind than their own software building, much to the irritation of the developers of custom firmware.
So, to sum it up, I think this has been a praticularly bad day for all SGS2 Android smartphone lovers. And being beaten to it by some other competing manufacturer does not help!
Thanks for listening
Dude, relax. It is just a phone. An nice one, but still a phone.

You do know Samsung don't have to release an update right?
Next time get a Nexus device, any other flavoured Android build takes time for adaptation and I'll rather they did a good job than rush a half baked build.

i would rather have a stable rom with a bit of delay than a buggy one (doesnt apply to cyanogen mod )
and what are you on about its been about 3 months from the release of galaxy nexus
and anyways ics is coming tomorrow
we did have beta roms from december and we could see samsung patching bugs in each successive build this is what xda is we all work together to make our devices better and better
Stop moaning, HTC have just started rolling out ICS in certain regions, what about other Android manufacturers? Where's LG, where's Motorola? Where are their ICS leaks etc etc applies to all.
Each manufacturer has their own overlay on top of ICS this takes time and testing to get it right, it's a few months late oh well at least 2.3.6 is running fine though, there's no need for Samsung to update our phones to ICS they're a business do you think they care how long we have to wait no, they'd rather make money and focus on getting ICS running on their next flagship model then current flagship.
We will get it just a matter of when, if you don't like it get a Nexus, also made by Samsung.
All these posts bashing Samsung its just all the tech blogs making things worse!
If you dont like it get an iPhone or better yet a symbian device!

I would like the OP to tell me one thing that he/she can do on ICS that they can't do on gingerbread. And make it a decent example and not something like "monitor data usage" which I agree is nice to be built in but nothing that can't be done already with an app.
The way this post has been worded with all the "house/foundation" metaphor you would think that the SGS2 doesn't work at all atm and needs ICS to make it functional, which we all know is rubbish.

@bluefa1con ICS is not coming tomorrow, they went back on their word this morning.
anyway, you're right, and i'm a bit disappointed because Samsung have been best buddy with Google since Google Dev Day 2011, they have access to early build of their OS, they even produced 2 Nexus phones for them, there's a huge meaning behind this, but still, Samsung waited till the last moment to start working on their flagship device, first leaked build started coming out after official ics aosp release, and their work is progressing very slowly, but, like someone before me said, it's just a phone, i just love playing around with it, and i don't mind waiting till april/may for a stable rom, all i want from them are kernel sources.
I completly agree with OP-post.
My rage is simple, I mean, We're the owners of the fastest and best device in 2011 and we still didnt even had a actual DATE. The only thing, that was said: "Q1 2012". If I remember correctly, they said that Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note will have the update at Q1.
But let me tell you this, if they're still delaying date, and giving wrong info at their official(!) website, it seems that SGS2 ICS is not ready or something, that means that Galaxy Note is even out of place, probably, it will have the update somewhere at Q2 of 2012. It's totally unacceptable from such big and sucessful company as Samsung. We can't trust them, simply, they say one thing, tomorrow it will be "wrong" or something.
Samsung making great devices, and I love them, but the thing as they communicate with their customers, with their community - is just unacceptable. They won so much awards for their phone, and they, still, can't release their update to us.
Next time, i'll go to pure Google Phone.
Sorry for my poor English.

Same here mate..Those guys who have the GNEX are having the last laugh now. They even got a HTC sense 4.0 port as well those lucky bastards....I am gonna hold off till that release instead of going for the s3
About a year ago HTC decide to close their phones. That's why i decide to change to Samsung. And with me a lot of other HTC users. You are wright. This is not the way to communicate with your customers. This Samsung phone is my first and last one.

Think about it this way a large proportion of users don't give a crap about what firmware is running on their phone as long as it works, us geeks or enthusiasts may give a crap, but my sister has got an S2, several other work colleagues have them to and none of them even know about custom roms and such let alone an update to ICS so to the mass it's not a major priority in having the latest or greatest firmware as long as they can use their phones that's what they care about.
Several work colleagues are still on the original firmware and I've told them to update but they don't care or don't have the technological ability to do so.
There is a higher percentage of normal users compared to us at XDA who make a minority.
And for those who say this will be their last Samsung device good for you, go buy a Nexus oh wait that's made by Samsung as well! I'll continue to enjoy my device running on gingerbread which works beautifully also knowing the fact it's still the best phone available currently apart from the Note which I consider a niche and better than the s2.
If you want aosp buy a Nexus otherwise deal with the fact that it takes longer to get an update. It's the way it is on Android, look at the other manufacturers as well its common. That's the problem with an open source system compared to iOS where there are a selected few devices so updates are quicker to roll out on the product lines.

As in a contractual obligation? No indeed, I know that. But aparently (look around here on XDA) it is expected. Dissapoint customers too long, and you will be ditched for the one who doesn't.

Yeah, because getting a Nexus device will get you there quicker Most Nexus S users are still waiting on their update to ICS since updating was stopped at dec 20th.
And somewhere in my post I did mention myself that I lack fundamental understanding of the process of building firmware for handsets, thanks for repeating that to me. That doesn't mean I'm unable to compare this process to other processes and draw conclusions as a customer.
Updating on Android is slow and ceases quickly (this will probably be the last major update for the SGS2 already), so when developing stuff for Android you need to take at least 5 different versions of the OS into concideration because the market shares of the versions are very fragmented. A nuisance for developers, and also for users stuck on Froyo for example who cannot install some app because the developer chose to only build it for 2.3+ to save some time and money.
If you guys dont care that much, why you're replaying to this kind of threads?
The only thing I am talking about, is lack of communication between customer and Samsung. How the hell they can give fresh news about ICS update on their official website, and then, immidiatly, deleting it, and telling in twitter something about "wrong date". How cool is that?
They can at least say one time 100% date, but they're just keep all in secret, that's not the good way how they should treat to custumers of best device in 2011.
I'm still shocked how Galaxy Note users keep waiting for it, one leak, no news, no everything. Obviously, Sammy didnt release ICS for them in March, then, their saying about "Galaxy Note & Galaxy S2 ICS in Q1 2012" is wrong.

i9000 - the smartest purchase ever

So, back in 2010, my wife and I were looking for new phones to buy. I had a Nokia E71 while hers was an outdated SE feature phone, and she desperately needed a smartphone to keep track of her emails. She was hell bent on getting a Blackberry. I tried reasoning with her, and she finally agreed not to get a blackberry, but then she started insisting on getting a Nokia instead. This was around Valentine's Day in 2010, I tried telling her that some great Android Phones are about to be launched, she should wait, or better still get an iPhone.
The sad state of affairs in India in Feb 2010 was such that Apple were releasing the previous year's iPhone model (3GS I think) a month before the new model was announced. I could not let her buy an outdated iPhone for INR 36,000 when she could get the latest Nokia N97 Mini for INR 24,000. I still implored her to wait for newer Android phones.
She decided she couldn't wait and she got an N97 Mini for Valentine's Day . I must say I was also interested in some Symbian devices at the time, but I kept telling myself that I could make the E71 last a few more months and make a call when the newer Androids were released.
Finally i9000 released in July 2010, and I heard the world going crazy over the internet. I still kept waiting, and I finally decided that I needed to make sure that this phone would be future proof like the HD2.
The clincher for me was XDA. I saw so many people boasting of updated i9000 ROMs for each android release that I finally purchased my own i9000 on 11/11/10.
Not disappointed at all. Have you seen the number of JB ports available for i9000? Tell me one phone that was released at the same time and has such brilliant community support. All I can say is, my brother's Desire HD cannot find even a single decent ICS ROM.
Thats right we are awesome. We know
I agree with the great community support. Yet, maybe we are also lucky because it is very much close with Nexus.
Yeah I switched from my N8 to an i9000 a couple months back and haven't looked back. I was bored of modding Symbian^3 it was just so locked down... almost why I couldn't live with an iPhone, they're great devices stock but Android devices are great stock but with heeeuuugeeeee potential.
Go open source as much as you can
I'm always motivated to the open source devices and software
I bought it during the release years ago and I'm still checking these forums everyday looking for something new.
It's still working like a charm and I love it! Thanks for the great community developing roms!

Don't get me wrong im not saying bigger isn't better LOL!! but a phone is a phone and a tablet is a tablet. So what next the gs4 will be a 42 Inch LCD?
I got mine about 1 1/1 year ago, but was a bit bored and anoyed by all the samsung and telco stuff
so I started flashing about six month ago and I never will go back to stock. I'ts also great to be in this comunity,

What did I say ?
Had my i9000 for about a year and a half.
Don't regret it in the slightest. If my device makes it to 3 years old I'll still be using it as my main phone.

[poll] Xiaomi A2 Future, is it dead or promising

So i bought this phone since it released in my country, i bought the 6Gb ram version and i was too excited about, Android one phone with great specs according to the price, but i am a lil bit disappointed right now,
The update releases is a bit confusing as we can see what's happening with pie updates.
The development is too slow as there no working twrp and related stuff.
Forgive my ignorance as coming from HTC M8 with its big development from its early stages , this phone disappointed me, but dont get me wrong i am happy with the phone regarding its battery life what annoying me a bit but the fast charger make it up to me.
So based on ur experience guys what do u expect guys and is the fourms going to be on fire soon or is it going to be like that all along ?
its going to be alive for sure, but you won't get first-class support, also for sure. this phone is good for people who are on a budget yet want to have a fairly up-to-date software (including security updates) and don't expect pixel-level support. If you are one of these people, A2 is probably one of the best phones you can get. But if you expect a pixel-level support then you should probably go buy pixel
It will get better, but don't expect anywhere near the support your old phone had, that was a flagship and a very successful one, I don't I've tried a quarter of the roms that were available for my m7
Yu are being given more than just descent specs for a more than descent price but no updates should be fast like google pixel ... well not gonna happen
Software r&d is not cheap as yu can see many here on xda develop on in there spare time and with donations and i dont think even though xiaomi have great revenue and sales they are yet ready to speed up the process (FOR ME UPDATES ARE ALREADY FAST ENOUGH EVEN NOW BETTER THAN MY SAMSUNG GALAXY S7 THAT WAS WORTH 49999 rs)
Moral of the story is = just because yu are given good hardware at a fine price dont expect them to give yu fast software support too ( only if yu have a pixel )
Otherwise apple phones get ios for really long time( enjoy there new emoji in every damn update )

Mates i didn't expect pixel level of support at all, it just i didnt think Android One phone would get low development and update like that,
I can run Android pie on my M8 which pretty old phone now, but u cant run it on my 2018 Android one device, does that make any sense to you mates ??
On the other hand pocophone got it's official TWRP and keep being updated while the price difference is t that much though.

Why the hell are yu guys quoting me when i am making the exact same point that yu made
This is a budget phone not pixel lile ( COMPARED TO MY S7 JUST TO MAKE A POINT and even if my s7 is a flagship it gets security patches at end of each month whereas this MI A2 Gets updated on start of each month and that too sometimes more than one update )
I used to use an OPO which had and to a certain extent still has a lively developer scene (It's been a few months since the first Pie popped in the forums for it).
I don't neither expect nor foresee that sort of activity over here. This is a mid-range budget phone.
Then again, at least, bootloader unlock is hassle free.

I came from an OPO myself. And kind of disappointed with lack of development for now. It's a new phone and hopefully it'll pick up. It's a good phone don't get me but it's a "meh" or "alright" phone after a few weeks. Definitely a forgettable phone. Feel like I should've gone pocophone fone (1)
