Strange problem - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a strange problem. I have a note 3 that I haven't been able to make phone calls on for about a year I've looked up so much stuff and haven't been able to solve it. I honestly thought it might be the motherboard but today I pulled it out and was going to see if it was on the blacklist somehow. When I tried to look up the IMEI with the app "phone info" I noticed that the IMEI was missing the last letter. It has no plc version and no csc version. The Samsung serial number is all 0's. I can get 4g and browse Internet but I can't make or receive calls or text. Does anyone know of a link with some help

Confirm the model number in download mode and flash the latest stock ROM.

[Q] Unlocked G2 on emergency calls mode only.

Hi all,
This is my case with the hope of getting any help or lead in order to solve my problem:
After a long research I bought an brand new LG D800 already sim unlocked in the US and brought it to my country (Costa Rica). I made sure the frequencies supported by the D800 are the ones used in my country. In fact 2 years ago I bought another phone that uses same frequencies and had had no problems ever.
As soon as getting in my country I placed the SIM card I'm using in my current phone into the G2 and it recognized the signal and connected to the operators network. I started to make and receive calls almost immediately, and also SMS' without issues. So I started to migrate all my data from the current phone into the G2. I used Titanium Backup for this, so I rooted first the phone using the guide I found here, and basically what I did is installed the apps from Google Play and then restored data using Titanium.
After the second day of use suddenly I found out that I wasn't able to make or receive calls since the phone lost connection to the operators network only allowing emergency calls but the signal bars were full (see scren capture). Sometimes when restarting the phone I get "Phone not allowed MM6" message just after the phone tries to connect to the operators network.
Went to the phone company offices and they tried to help me and made some simple tests, without changing anything inside, such as checking Android's network configurations, checking in their system to verify the IMEI wasn't blocked or reported (the IMEI is clean), also checked the sim configuration and after more than 45 minutes they were not able to find anything wrong in their system or with the phone itself. They also made a final test taking a working sim and put it into the G2 and gatting same emergency calls mode, and took my sim from the G2 and put it in another phone and that phone was able to make and receive calls. So they concluded that the phone has a "built-in" configuration or damage that impedes the phone to connect to the network. They finally suggested to ask the seller to apply the waranty, which is not a viable option since I'm not in the US anymore. This G2 is using the stock ROM (see screen captured).
I've been in close contact with the seller, and he had shown interest in this case but unfortunately hasn't been able to provide much support or help to solve the issue. He reports that he has contacted other buyers of this same phone, also sim unlocked by him, and they all are using their G2s normally. Didn't provide where their locations are tough.
My own conclusions here are that the G2 IMEI is not blocked by the phone company, that there is some kind of fault in the phone that when trying to connect to the network, the network doesn't "like" and rejects connection, althought it worked at the begining, and I'm not able to determine if the fault is software or it's in the hardware of the phone.
So I'm trying to understand what my options are at this moment:
Try to return the phone to the seller, or ask an LG representative in my country to change the unit. Which seems to be very difficult.
Reflash the unit with a stock ROM and reestablish the warranty. But being unsure if this will solve the issue.
Reflash the unit with a new ROM and loose the warranty, and again, being unsure the issue will be solved.
I'm really frustrated and at this moment and have no idea on what to do.
Any ideas or insight will be appreciated.
Thanks.
NOTE: I reinitialized the unit and lost any signal (see screenshots) but received update notifications from Google Play and was able to upload the screenshots into my Dropbox although no signal is shown in the status bar and no WiFi connection is established, only data connection thru APN (I Assume).
Go into status, what's IMEI say?
Sounds like EFS issues. I take it you didn't back it up after setting up on carrier and flashing?
Of so, you have some manual work to do with diag mode and a couple apps via pc.
Hi Steamer;
Under status I see 3 items:
1) Phone Number: shows"Unknown".
2) IMEI: shows the number printed on the box, on a sticker on phone's back.
3) IMEI SV: shows"03".
Where can I learn more about EFS issues? Are there tutorials?
As you say I haven't done any backup thing.

Hi again Steamer:
After reading quite a bit about EFS issues now I understand much better what you meant with your post.
And as you said I didn't back up efs folder, I even didn't flash any ROM yet in the unit. The only thing I did was a 'hard reset' to the unit using the Power + Vol. Down method, after having several 'com.android.phone' errors due to backing up data from Titanium.
The phone went to factory state, I put the sim card and everything went back to normal again, meaning that I was able to make and receive calls. Like 4 hours later the phone went to emergency calls only mode, and from then on I'm not able to take it out of that mode.
So I wonder if the efs folder could corrupt after that factory reset. Is it possible?
Thanks again and any light is greatly appreciated.
It is not in its own partition on this device, but in system. A hard reset shouldn't have caused corruption, but it is not impossible. Your IMEI is intact then, that is good. From what you said about it working partially, your EFS is most likely fine as well. There is a thread here to get files with custom recovery zip file, or you can use adb commands to do it yourself. I don't have guides off hand, but Google is your friend, just specified this phone in searches. Try a new SIM. Sounds more like SIM /carrier issue now as you are out of "activation". That is why emergency is popped and unknown number. The SIM itself may and most likely is bad(or carrier has an issue with your account), in turn it can't communicate with the server causing non activation on network search. Priority to SIM.

Hi i have similar issue with my LG G4 H818P dual sim... after factory reset i often face emergency calls only issue despite full signals... sometimes i able to make and receive calls but most of the time despite my sim registered on network and i get full signals when someone tries to call me he get message as my cell is off.... really annoyed and i flashed latest rom v10e but same issue. Same sim when i use in note 3 then no issue what so ever
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
I had the same issues. Bought in Us using now in India. Go to settings..tethering&networks.. mobile networks... international data roaming and select standard data. Switch off and switch on your phone .
This will happen when you use, internet over gsm. If you disable internet or if your phone loses signal while switching between edge and 3g/4g data, this is tend to happen.
Similar Problem
I have an lg vs980 and I was using it with H2O wireless and later I changed to Simple Mobile. I'm living in Puerto Rico. The phone was working all right and, suddenly, one day it was always displaying 'emergency calls only'.
I did factory reset, then I reflashed stock lollipop and it was like nothing happened, keeps displaying 'emergency calls only'.
Then I found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2394689 and applied the patch but didn't seem to resolve the problem.
As a last resort I tried flashing cm 12.1 and before first boot applied the patch from the cited thread but no result, keeps displaying 'emergency calls only'.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

S4 I9505 no 3G but only G

hello all
bought the second hand phone with this network issue.
after trying some roms, wifi fixes, network fixes, root settings, finally stopped on pyrana rom but during all those, couldnt find out what could be the reason for the mobile network.
and also realized that the imei number is not same as behind, could that be the reason? any chance to change that? or any tips to get 3G?
using tele2 in Holland, used my sim in another phone, 3G working
also used another sim from Tmobile in this phone, again only G no 3G.
thanks from now

Goto Settings, tap the Connections tab, goto More Networks, then tap on Mobile Networks. What does your Network Mode say?
Are you on GSM only or are you on either LTE/WCDMA/GSN (Auto connect) or WCDMA/GSM (Auto connect)?
If you're on WCDMA, it could possibly be an access point problem, or maybe a modem issue?
thanks for trying to help man. im on lte/wcdma/gsm auto...
just flashed to omega v28 4.4.2 but again no luck... still only G

Have you checked your APN? Is it set up correctly?
Where it says More Networks, tap on Access Point Names and check yours is set up correctly.
You should be able to find the APN details online through google
yep.. did that auto, manual, copying from another phone, didnt work. and the imei is still diffrent than the one behind the phone. still thinking that could cause the problem. :/

i wish i could do that just as easy as you say
Looking on Google, it seems some people have had a bit of luck with this issue after doing a Manual Roam.
That involves going into Settings, More Networks, Mobile Networks then tap Network Operators. Wait for it to scan and then choose another network to try and connect too. It'll fail. Then go back and do it again, but this time select your network operator and it'll connect.
It's worth a try?

Did you say that the IMEI number shown in Android is different than the one printed behind the battery?
If so, that says to me that the phone was once reported stolen at one point, blacklisted and someone has changed the IMEI number to get it off the blacklist and back on the network.

Well, the IMEI number behind the battery will be the phones proper IMEI number.
I think the only way you'll find out if it's been reported stolen is to contact your network and give them the IMEI on the phone (behind the battery) and ask them. Or you could pay for an online check. I'm sure theres a few companies that offer online checks. Keep in mind if the original IMEI is blacklisted, you won't be able to get it removed. Only the person who reported it stolen, and can provide proof it was theirs when it was reported can get it removed.
I'm not too sure how you'd go about changing it back to it's original IMEI, but if the original IMEI has been blacklisted, then as soon as you do change it back, you won't be able to use your phone at all. All data/voice services will stop working.

i checked the imei writing in the phone, and here is the result
imei.info/phonedatabase/2500-sony-ericsson-k530/ (copy paste pls. i cant send the link because im new here)
i actualy have a sony ericson which i didnt know
maybe the provider is seeing my phone as sony ericson, and that phone doesnt support 3G... hmmm now i have to find a way to change the imei.
if its reported, then i come back to this
That's your problem right there. Your phone has likely been reported stolen in the past and someone has changed the IMEI to allow it back on the network.
It's possible that the phone who's IMEI has been taken doesn't support 3G so network isn't providing it to your phone.

[Q]

I have a n9005 XEO that i bought on ebay. it was working fine for about 5 months now until a few days ago when it just stopped getting cellular signal altogether. no calls, no data, nothing. it seemed to corespond to me using towlroot, installing supersu, and a couple of xposed add-ons, but everything seemed to work fine for a few days before i had this problem. I tried making sure that airplane mode was off, data was enabled, that i had the apn settings correct for my provider (at&t, USA), I even went so far as to restore to factory settings, and then flash another rom (the stock s5 port i found here in the dev forum). still not getting cell signal at all). I went so far as to go to the local at&t store and ask them to place my sim in a known good phone to make sure it has service (and it does and is provisioned properly and i'm paid up). my note sees the sim (i.e. no "sim not found" messages), just plain no service as if i were in a dead zone. the phone hasn't been mishandled, i've tried pulling the battery and putting it back in... I can't think of anything i'm missing here besides trying to flash the modem (which i can't seem to find the stock modem (n9005xxuenc2) or firmware on a site that doesn't take 7 hours to download it from.
can anybody help? (either with a mirror that doesn't suck for the latest stock firmware or latest stock modem, or offer any other suggestions?)

it's an n9005 xeo from poland, I'm in the USA on AT&T. I downloaded the firmware successfully from sammobile and installed it with odin 3.07 which seemed to go successfully but I still get absolutely no cellular
I've tried using the default apn, tried using at&t's apn settings (which i remember having to do last time before i got data but i'd always been able to make calls and that's not working right now either), no effect...
anybody have any ideas?

So you're saying it worked perfectly for 5 months, and then suddenly it went haywire on you? Did you do any major changes before it happened?
I also tried flashing the XXUENC2 and ZHUENB5 modems from here with no effect.

as i noted I rooted it with towlroot, installed supersu, and a coupe of xposed add-ons. but everything was working afterwards for about a week before i had this problem. otherwise, I was using my phone one night, i wake up, and see that i have no service. it was after a big storm so i figured they were doing service on the tower, until my work iphone rings (on the same network) and that feeling of dread set in so i went about trying to diagnose the problem and here i am.

even if it were blacklisted, it should still allow me to place 911 calls and the like. it should work like a deactivated phone. it's not. just in case i was wrong, I also verified the imei on swappa and they confirm that it is indeed NOT blacklisted.
also i'm not sure why it would be blacklisted to begin with. it was working one day then i went to use it the next and bam, not working. i don't get it.

Sounds like your IMEI got tampered or stolen and got blacklisted. Usually this would happen, especially when buying phones online.

But I've used several reputable services to check my IMEI number and they all say that my imei is in good standing... I don't get it. besides, what causes an imei to be blacklisted to begin with? - I wasn't trying to circumvent any security features, had no malware, no reason at all for an accounts admin to want to get me off the network. my account is in good standing, and my sim still works in an old iphone that i've got (i'm using that until i can sort out my regular phone situation).

The fact that someone had the phone with them can easily get it stolen. It's a plain 15 digit number, easily forgeable just by looking at the box, and since it has no authentication, people can just get your phone blacklisted by placing it on a defunct phone that hacks the network (or something).
well tonight i took it apart to see if there was a problem with the antenna cables, connections to the various peripheral devices and such and alas, no effect... still does exactly the same thing after field stripping the unit and resenting everything. if it's hardware, it's nothing i can tell...
I was also able to generate a .pit file, grab the latest build for my csc from sammobile (takes forever) and did a nand erase in odin with the pit and the downloaded stock rom... everything went great, but it got me to exactly the same place i'm at... working phone, no service. I have no money, but i think i'm going to just end up ebaying it and buying an s3 until i can save up enough for a note 4 or nexus 6... for now, i'm on a crappy old iphone 4 with a broken lock button, but that's another thread.
well it's been about a month and a half since i've had a decent phone (my 3 phones ago iphone 4 really doesn't cut it). after giving it some thought, I think i might buy a broken-screen sm-n900t, and swap it's mainboard into my phone. hardware-wise i believe they are exactly the same, it should be easily rooted with unlocked baseband,it would give me LTE on at&t, and it should be easily unlocked so i can use it on at&t... it should also only cost me 1/8 the cost of a good condition used n900t. ($60 or so on ebay i hope?).
still pretty sad that such a nice phone quit on me so quickly

Why don't you swap the N9005's screen onto the N900T and keep it like that? The N900T if I can recall, has the most bands available worldwide and if you're already replacing it, just enjoy the vast amount of customizations and potential the N900T has.
Did you pursue all avenue including Samsung service/repair centre or even Samsung line enquiry to confirm it's not blacklisted?

that's basically the plan, except the motherboard lives on the display side of things, so it would be swapping in a new motherboard (n900t). we both describe the same plan of action.

[Q] Caller ID not showing, only Unknown for Incoming Calls

Hi!
So my Samsung Galaxy S5 running on 4.4.2 won't show the name of the caller or even the phone number. It just says Unknown even though the number is saved on my phone. I have to answer them just so I'll know who it is. My phone is not rooted and I have done a factory reset. Even Samsung and my service provider don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Hey man, I have the exact same problem. It started after flashing an update to a ROM I was actively using... but I find it hard pressed to think that a ROM would have the ability to block incoming caller information. I've since tried a variety of roms, factory reset, etc but nothing seems to bring it back. My Default APN settings are not what they used to be though, every update loads my APN settings up with like 10 different apns including rogers which I have to delete to restore cellular data.
No number shows up when I receive a call, even when they're in my address book. Every call is UNKNOWN. I'm on Rogers with BOC1 baseband and modem. Can anybody help? Would a missing APN setting have to do with not receiving the caller information? It's very frustrating.

Help needed with Caller ID stranger behavior on SM-G950W

Phone: Galaxy S8 / SM-G950W
Network: Telus
Problem: This is the strangest thing I've ever seen! My phone is showing incoming calls from my wife's number and another relative as "Private Number". All other calls are identified correctly. Their network is 7-Eleven Speakout.
The strangest thing is, if i take my SIM and use it on a different phone, their numbers show up just fine. Also, if i put another SIM from a different provider in my S8, it also works fine. I even changed the SIM from Telus and got a new one but it didn't help. I've reset the network settings on the phone, reset the data on the phone app, nothing worked.
It seems that the problem only happens when I use my Telus SIM on that specific S8 phone!
Unfortunately, wiping the phone is the least favorable solution as it's not rooted and I have tons of apps that it'll take considerable effort to re-configure them. I don't backup to samsung or google for privacy reasons. Used to use TitaniumBackup, but since no root exists for this phone yet i cannot use TB in this case.
My question is: Does anyone knows the process of call identification on android phones and may have a good guess why such a behavior may happen? I have a bit of a technical background so i may be able to understand any technical explanation...
I need help on this, as now i have to answer any private number that calls me when i'm away as it could be a family emergency, unfortunately telemarketers and spammers are not making my life any easier and i would love to be able to block all unknown calls again like i used to...
Thank you all for your help in advance, this is one of the strangest issues i've seen and i only ask for help here after i depleted all other ways...
Cheers!

Cheers!

A friend is having the same problem, albeit worse - it's all incoming calls show as unknown.
Swapped my SIM in and it's fine. Swap back and it's stuffed again. The suspect SIM works fine in my phone tho.
Even got a new SIM and ported the number to it, but same problem.
Out of ideas to try.
Looks like it's time to replace the phone
