fire OS 5.9.7 - Fire General

(UPDATE I was wrong there's no update lesson for everyone is to triple check before you post and don't trust Google search!! I guess the thread is a place holder for now )
It looks like theres a new update available
Here's what Amazon tells us about the update
"Here’s what’s new:
Return borrowed books: You can now return books from within your library by long pressing on a borrowed book and selecting return. Performance improvements and other general enhancements."
But what other things did they patch?

Deleted

We've no way of knowing what they did until someone installs the update. But if you are root, you can launch the DeviceSoftwareOTA app if you're brave and look how fast it fills up with "updates". Just have to make sure to keep a shell open so you can constantly delete the app's data while you watch. I've never owned other devices that had to have so many apps constantly accessing the internet and sending/receiving who knows what kind of data.

That could be the case, assuming they are even aware of it yet. It took them abut 3 or 4 months when I posted here about the first round a year or so ago...maybe more. It will come a point when they can only disable and replace so many commands before ADB stops working.

mmmm .. I have looked at the amazon page and the FireOs update 5.9.7 is for a kindle (book reader) and not for the fire 7 '2017 tablet

The best one is you. Not downloading pirated apps from China is the most effective defense, Barring that, Lookout claims in the article that they effectively protect against it.
Lookout has already delivered an update for its Android users to protect them against known instances of the Trojan. If you are already a Lookout user (free or premium), you are protected and no action is needed.

Win 8.1 rtm

I am having a boring afternoon and thinking about playing with 8.1 release to manufacturing version on my Acer Iconina w3.
Any advice on the risk or installing this versus just waiting for another month to get the release version?

If you have no reason to install it and are unsure on the risks, I would advise just waiting.

Actually, you missed one possibility. If you're installing this on a "sandbox" with the known intention that it won't be for long, go to town. If you're considering installing for daily use without having to start over later.... yeah, you probably want to wait.
Hence why I put 8.1 on the build box and 7 Ultimate on the new "family" box... for now.
I decided to skip it. Cleaned by closet instead of playing with beta software

But to answer legitimate or not. Some people do have it legitimately, RTM is given to quite a few people legitimately early (not just manufacturers, several of the library computers at my university have it via microsoft directly). The copy these guys are using, not so legitimate.
RTM is what you'll see available to the public very soon. It's no different to the retail version.

I have legit access. I haven't bothered, turns out the university can give people copies of 8.1 pro (although that probably comes under MSDN). I'm perfectly happy with 8.0, see little improvement for me in 8.1 (I have no desire to see the start button back), I'll probably just wait a few weeks and get it via windows update.

It may be Dreamspark, and you may be entitled to a heck of a lot more software if so! Depending on what a university agrees to it could include Visual Studio, Office, etc. Worth finding out for sure.

I have dreamspark already, mine doesn't have Windows 8 or office in it though. Does have visual studio and windows server 2012 though, must try out the latter (already use visual studio heavily). Mine wasn't university issued though, havent been in a rush to check that out with uni as I have windows 8 and don't use ms office (use libre office instead, ms office is better overall but libre does the job fine), I will check it out eventually though.
Quick question. If I install the preview today, well I still be able to install the real thing on Thursday? I'm bored and feel like playing around.

If you install the preview then you can't update to 8.1. You would need to do a full install.

I thought they had changed it so you could do, so many mixed messages
Personally I'm already running the RTM that was leaked a while back so makes no odds to me, I'll just grab the official ISO's when they land and add them to my ISO store and carry on as I am currently.
That's for RT... it's possible via a bit of a hack on x86, but I can't recommend it.
So I'm getting an"autorun.dll could not be loaded" error message when trying to install the preview. Anyone know how to fix it?

That's the only case I can think where it would try to use Autorun.
Try booting instead straight to USB/CD and installing that way.

How does being suspicious about a root exploit that popped up on a Chinese site overnight make me blame Chinese hackers for all my problems as normal? I don't blame the Chinese for anything, I would be suspicious of this no matter where it popped up if they went about releasing it the same way. It is always good to be suspicious about root exploits and to look into it instead of just going with it.
You need to take a chill pill and understand that not everyone is badmouthing people all the time, when they posted a warning to ,make people think before they just went with a root exploit and to double check that nothing malicious is being injected along with it.

Note:You'll need to buy a really 'cheap on pocket' device to use it which doubles up as a Dust-Plug.. Or rather I should say, it's actually a Dust Plug that doubles up(or even more)..
I just now ordered it and it costed me only US$ 2.24 including shipping money
Waiting eagerly for it to arrive to me..
I'm not posting any links here to the device because I'm not sure as to whether it'll be an infringement of XDA's rules..
For those who're worried that it might get lost while using earphones-it has a solution to it too..

I did a quick search and liked the idea but the problem I think would be that in pocket, those 4 buttons could be activated due to its placement on the backside, talking of backside of phone, I use a wallet case for my Note 3 and that wouldn't let me use Dimple..
You know what..
I just now figured out that, the button on the earphone would function like the button on this smart dust plug when one is using the earphone.. :victory:
For those of you interested in it, it's called-

Pretty long name I know..

And the name of the app is Klick
It's available here for download..

Great thing-it won't compromise with the security of your phone.

I came across Pressy only after I ordered the Smart Dust Plug for myself and realised that the Chinese manufacturers copied this idea too..
Because they weren't required to put in R&D like the Pressy guys did, it costs only a small fraction of it without the need to wait for it to get delivered..
It's sad for the Pressy guys but you just can't stop the Chinese manufacturers..

Could anyone please share the Activation Code of their Pressy, I want to give the related app a try with my Dust Plug. .

Unlocked bootloader? I'm excited again

I can confirm that the unlock is real.
It should be noted that users should NEVER EVER get or take another update from Amazon. This usually involves an upgrade to the "aboot" partition which will IMMEDIATELY RELOCK the device.
Once the device is unlocked several key changes take place in the functionality:
- The device no longer checks for signatures on recovery or boot images. This would allow for custom recovery and the potential for full AOSP ROMs.
- If powered on with both volume buttons pressed, fastboot mode is started for easier recovery of the device.
The unlock, may only apply to certain versions of the OS (*.3.2.1 etc). Some tests for downgrading and then running the exploit need to happen over the weekend and I'm sure that's why you don't see this released yet.
Also, there is probably going to be a fee to unlock, that's a new business model for devs to still make some money off unlock exploits while keeping that exploit from being patched by the OEMs.

Sorry. I just came across it.. did not venture in hdx land for a bit. Well it seems also there are legal issues as well but if it's actually in existence wick seems to be case it can somehow slip out as all information does eventually

again i apologize ill delete it just wanted to start a conversation about it
I will gladly pay a nominal fee.
FireOS is pretty crappy once you actually start using the device with google play store... Apps (mostly games) constantly crash due to memory issues that i know are because of the OS. How can my HTC One M7 have ~ 900MB ram available at idle when the HDX has ~300 at idle... No phone services are even running? Oh wait, all the crap amazon services are and are so tied in with the OS they are basically impossible to stop/remove without bricking the device...
I can't wait for un-locked boot loader and some real android.... :victory:
Has anybody (Developer) taken a look at the latest TrustZone vulnerability discussed by Dan Rosenberg at BlackHat?

I've read about it a couple times in the last couple of days here in this forum but I'm not sure if anybody has tried it.

I am very surprised that these 2 devices are not unlocked by now and more popular. They are cheap and very powerful for what you get.
I hope I can get my unit working soon.
It's just sitting in the box
Anybody heard about a fasstboot exploit?

I'm 99% positive it won't work. I'm pretty sure Amazon's engineers removed that command manually.

Pretty sure it was patched before the hdx came out

I wonder until now, is there any case that after several years (e.g. 3-4yrs) since the day a device was release, it has not been unlocked?

It's only been one year, calm down. And yes, there have been plenty.
