Does the Samsung Focus Really Have Cornings Gorilla Glass?

I heard that the Samsung Focus had corning gorilla glass and hearing this I decided a screen protector wouldn't be needed (gorilla glass is supposed to be scratch resistant isn't it?). I'm the type of person who takes extra steps to protect his gadgets. I always hold my phone with a firm grip, I have a dedicated pocket for it (no keys or coins with it) and I never drop it. Recently I've noticed some scratches appearing on the front screen of my Focus. Most of them aren't very noticeable, but one in particular can be seen plain as day and is infuriating. Like I said, I don't have anything in my pockets, I've never dropped it and I want to know how these scratches appear on "scratch resistant" glass if nothing but my fingers and cloth are touching it.
If the Focus doesn't have the gorilla glass/gorilla glass isn't scratch resistant I will delete this thread in shame of my lack of knowledge

the zune HD has gorilla glass and I have a zune and a focus. I am reasonably sure the focus isnt gorilla glass, taps like plastic and scratches relatively easy. my zune has very little scratches after 8 months of abuse sharing pockets w/ keys; only one day with my focus in my pocket with my wallet i have scratches.

It does really seem like plastic. Or maybe really thin, versatile glass.

I asked Samsung via twitter on November 9th and they confirmed it
"the Focus does have Gorilla Glass. Thanks for reaching out to us, we're happy to help. ^Sab"

Just found this and it says the Samsung Focus does have gorilla glass.

Is it possible I got a bad unit? Or is it possible Samsung is just using the weakest gorilla glass?

Samsung claims that the Focus has Gorilla Glass, so I guess you can just take their word for it. The Gorilla Glass might be underneath the plastic layer Samsung used. I think the Vibrant and European Galaxy S are the same way.

I bought a silicone case for it and for now I don't have a screen protector but things are going fine for me. The phone probably isn't bulletproof and considering how thin the Gorilla Glass is on the Focus it will do an exceptional job stopping the usual accidents but it won't stop anything more serious. But since you're an 'extra protection' kind of guy you should just get the screen protector and give yourself some peace of mind lol.

Usually I get a case, but I haven't found anything to appealing yet (I like for my phone to look good). Also I try to keep it in the best condition so when I go to resell it I get maximum value

glass scratches.. bottom line..
gorilla glass is just harder to scratch and is a tougher glass overall so it can be made thinner than other glass digitizers...

They probably have another layer over the Gorilla glass.
The Focus's screen really feels like plastic. It's just not as solid as, say, the iPhone 4 (which is said to use Gorilla glass for the front.) Gorilla glass is supposed to be scratch-proof and you scratched it in a day? Hmm...

I do not have a case or a screen protector on my Focus and don't have a single scratch on the screen and only a few micro scuffs on the plastic battery cover. I am generally careful with my gadgets, but I have carried this phone with me every day since Nov 8th and both of my young children play with it on a regular basis, and still nothing. Thankfully I have not dropped it screen side down on any hard surfaces (knock on wood)!

It is not scratch proof.. It is much more scratch resistant... No glass is scratchproof

I can tell you from personal experience that a Focus screen will not survive a 3 foot fall on its face to concrete. And it is very very much made of glass.
But it seems relatively scratch resistant : )

Have you guys seen the youtube video of a guy testing out the glass screen of the focus? He's literally stabbing the phone with a screwdriver and smacking it with the handle and there was no scratches on the phone afterwards.

It's supposed to be extremely hard to scratch, even with a razor blade. The iPhone is practically invincible when it comes to keys and the like.

I'm not lying, I have no reason to be. I've also had the phone for about a week (and a half) and I think I might have actually dropped it once on the rubber foot mat of a car, but that was only like a 2 foot drop and it was rubber. I'm still perplexed as to how this scratch got on my Focus. I have some other little "soft" scratches, but those you can't see unless the screen is turned off and its at the right angle. The one I'm referring to is small, but when I use my Focus outside you can notice it (even on the black theme). I tried taking a picture, but it wouldn't come out.
Would it be possible to exchange it for another Focus at AT&T if I'm still in my 30 day trail period?

You'd have to talk to them, but I doubt it. Usually physical wear and tear isn't really covered. But couldn't you return it and then buy another one?
I'm assuming you got the scratch when the phone landed screen-down on the floor mat of the car. There are usually tiny rocks and some are bound to be more solid than the glass, thus the tiny scratch. So 'unlucky' then, I suppose.

First Scratch on glass

Had the phone a couple of weeks now and just noticed my first scratch on my screen..
I thought the gorilla glass would make this less of a problem but I've not done anything like drop it or drag it along anything.

Gorilla glas does not mean scratch proof, there are many things that can scratch it, for example sand particles.

Nope, just in my pocket and on the table with the glass facing upwards. Its just a wee one and not the end of the world but still a little annoying. I don't want to put a screen protector on it if I can help it.

never got a scratch on my n8 n omnia hd.

they weren't joking when they said its better to be safe than sorry, always use protection.

18 months with my HD2 with no protector and no scratches
I hope my soon-to-arrive SGS2 will fare as well.

GODZILLA GLASS TRUE FACTS:
It won't get scratches from your nails or from your normal keys or coins.
However, it will scratch with, and so please avoid, these objects:
1) Hardened steel (like expensive tools or expensive knives)
2) Precious STONE jewelry (if you are a woman, or loan your phone to a woman, or wear rings and earrings yourself, make sure precious stones like diamonds do not come in contact with the screen - they will scratch the screen with minimal or on effort; give your phone for 30 seconds to your girlfriend, she will put it to her ear, the ear has a diamond earring you gave her on Valentine's Day - she will give you the phone back with at least one scratch on it)
3) Glass cutting instruments and parts of those instruments (I hope I do not have to expain this one).
4) Most hard sands if applied properly

Additional notes on OLEOPHOBIC COATING that SGS2 has
The oleophobic coating is also very sensitive. Avoid household solvents or strong cleaning liquids coming in contact with the screen. They will dissolve the oleophobic coating and only then you will understand how much your now defunct oleophobic coating was helping with finger prints, skin oil, and feminine skin care products (when the aforementioned girlfriend puts the phone to her freaking fake-looking powder- and foundation-covered cheek that produce a gooey oily mess when mixed with her normal face oils and sweat).
EDIT #2: I am not bad mouthing GG - it is a great product, and GG coupled with oleophobic coating provide for a GREAT EXCELLENT screen of SGS2.
It is way, way better than the cheap glass or plastic many cheap devices are sporting. Just please realize GG cannot and will not guarantee 100% protection from scratches or breaks.

gorilla is good enough to suffer from keys, knives, coins in test but it can be easilly scratched by sand.
But the scratches that you may see, is not the gorilla glass.
Screens on phones nowsaday are covered by a fingerprint proof ( although it's not effective) and the sand kill this proof easilly.

problem scratchy glass with godzilla being apparent of course, sand happen now and someday happen me or you. Hope using protectian will cause ill feeling, not and smudgas

dropped my sgs2 down an escalator today ... glass didn't break nor got any scratches. gorilla glas rocks ...

I was REALLLY careful with my s1 at first. And I still managed to get scratches. SAND WILL SCRATCH IT. And I don't mean like lots of sand. I mean a few grains of sand left in your pocket from last summer.
Though I have to say that the scratches were invisible when the screen was on.

I also had scratches on my phone already and carried the damn thing in a pouch in my pocket...went to o2 today and got it exchange hehe, new phone I slapped screen protectors on straight away!!

i had two very fine scratches that were not noticeable on GSI. I don't think i'm going to have my phone long enough to care about the scratches later on.
also the coating on the GSII is awesome. It allows me to leave my microfiber wipe at home

How where you able to exchange it? what kind of arguments did you use?
I have a scratch on mine, its almost 6 days old. i think iam gonna try displex for touch screens

For everyone out there using their phones without screen protectors !!

if u have been using ur phone without a screen protector like i did, u will notice that the coating of the the screen got several scratches all over that can only be seen in odd angles under a bright light........ is anyone else experiencing this or is it just me ?? !!!
i have got a dozen of fine scratches all over my screen........is there anything i can do about it ??

No screen protector, no scratches here. Have you tried to vigorously clean the areas with scratches? I thought I had a fine scratch a few days ago, but it cleaned off

yeah i tried to clean them off but in vain
they are small fine scratches in the coating, and some are long ones beside the speaker
i found out that the coating is highly scratchable which defeats the purpose of a gorilla glass
and if i use a SP on this beautiful screen it defeats the purpose of the coating too
im just thinking of leaving it as it is and when it looks really bad to remove the coating !!
unless there is something else i can do !!

I havnt got a screen protector on mine, but always keep it in my pdair case. Its still unscratched, not even the fine scratches you mentioned. Im actually waiting for my screen protector to arrive (in about 2 weeks time) so hopefully it stays this way.
Anyway you should try keep it in a pouch, away from sharps like sand and stone jewellery. Eg, womens diamond earrings will scratch your screen.

It is RULE for any portable screen based devices to NOT BE TOUCHED until screen protector placed on the device.
Not trying to sound rude in anyway (don't like scratches either), even if Gorilla glass is break resistant, it can still a scratched just like ant other material.
I guess your going to have to wait until repair parts start becoming available online for you to buy a replacement glass.

My Nexus S and every other nexus S I've seen has it (except brand new ones) and I'm sure the SGS2 is similar.
You just have to ask yourself, what's the point of the oleophobic coating if you put a screen protector over it?

im pretty sure if u examined ur screen under bright light at some odd angles u will notice fine scratches out there, i have been really careful with my phone and still i got like 8 fine scratches in the coating, it seems that the coating is highly scratchable which defeats the purpose of the gorilla glass which is scratch resistant

You know what a good solution is? Um using a screen protector....

even if i got a new screen it will get scratched, the problem is not with the glass, i have been very careful, the coating is just highly scratchable, im thinking of removing the coating with some chemical dissolvent later when it really looks bad

yes exactly, the coating is there to protect the screen from oil and smudges, but it is highly scratchable which deafeats the purpose of a gorilla glass which is scratch resistant, so now i should put a screen protector to protect the coating from getting scratched, which in turn defeats the purpose of the coating as it will become totally useless !!!!
i think we shud just remove the coating at some point using some chemical dissolvents, as i find no point of keeping it under a screen protector anyway :S

[Q] glass panel scratches easy?

I have owned my sharp aquos crystal for about five days. No case no screen protector. Only after five days did I notice scratches all around the glass panel. Is anyone else besides me experiencing this problem. Is there a safe way to remove the scratches (they are light but I can see them still)

it isn't glass, that is why. it is made of plastic

Seeing that the front panel is completely covered in "glass" that actually is raised it would've been very stupid of sharp to use real glass. Even gorilla glass 3 will shatter with a drop if it is on a phone in the manner that it is on the aquos

Technically 'Acrylic'. But yes this phone will scratch pretty easily and the type of material it is will leave a pretty visible mark if it's deep enough.

Good news is that it won't break as easily if dropped, but say good by to those nice corners.

I only have had tge phone for like four days and it has three really bad scratches and one of the scratches is long and straight down near the center of the screen. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO REMOVE SCRATCHES FROM ACRYLIC. I tried toothpaste but it did Bad enough the light bleed is distracting, now i have to be annoyed by this as well. Please help.

I have the 306SH for 2 weeks and no scratches yet.

5 days old and two scratches later. Observations
My Aquos is now 5 days old and I can see two very fine 1/2" scratches already. I fear for the worst on this device over time. I had a ZTE N9500 with Gorilla glass and it was tough as nails. It had a very good feel when touched and was good at not holding fingerprints. I also use a capacitive touch pen stylus on the phones for notes and there I can see a noticeable difference. The glass is just superior. The Aquos is pretty, but it's Acrylic screen hold fingerprints far worst than the glass. With regards to the stylus, it's almost unusable on the Aquos screen. It's doesn't slide smooth and kind of sticks to the screen as its being dragged creating breaks in the lines being drawn. Anyone using a capacitive stylus with the squishy rubber bulb top to avoid fat finger keyboarding maybe deeply disappointed with this screen.

You guys don't believe in screen protectors? All my phones have gorilla glass but I still have screen protectors on them. Scratches will always happen sooner or later on phones eventually.

ZF2 GorillaGlass3 protection is just a joke!!

My Z008 has got scratches out of nowhere. I always check before placing my phone under pant pockets. Still don't know how come these scratches are appearing. Now looking for a screen guard.

It's the gorilla glass 3 problem, I had the same scratches on my galaxy s5,so I got a tempered glass which is allot better in terms of micro scratches.
But fear not it's not the actual glass that is being scratched but the nano coating on top of the glass which is used to give a soft slide feeling, that's why you only see then with the screen off and from an angle.

The camera lens also gets scratched pretty easily, ad the glossy black plastic frame around the screen also develops small dents even if my phone is in a Ringke case.
I guess they really had to cut corners to give good specs at a cheap price.

Same here. the black bezel is easy scratched . I already have alot of scratches on my screen and almost 70 % on my camera lens. I only have my phone for 2 months . And got a case for it after 2 weeks.

With original zen cover no scratches, both zcreen and camera lens. Only a little scratch from wife's dimond earring near front cam, she forget to close cover before phone call, so for me filmscreen is waste of money and touch felling, useless

Apparently all material very soft. Frame around screen really soft.

I have had my phone since mid July and no scratches, black bezel around camera lens still perfect. Phone goes into my pocket every day. I use a dedicated pocket ie: nothing else goes in that pocket.
With the inexpensive Ringke case Impossible to scratch camera bezel or lens when placing phone on its back as it is then inset. For people that carry stuff in pocket with the phone I am sure a case would help prevent scratches. $200 or $300 for the phone spend $10.99 for a case. Lots of people must be buying the case as price has gone up several dollars since I got it.

Tempered Glass protector
If you all are experiencing these micro scratches, it's sort of an inevitable thing. Gorilla glass scratches with grains of sand or little things from your pocket. If you're really worried about your phone, you can purchase a tempered glass screen protector, and a case to fully protect your device!

Case and tempered glass screen protector are a must. Added them as soon as I took my zen out the box

Tempered glass save my screen from crack also.
Even glass broken, but my phone screen is protected.

I've had no issues other then dropping and breaking the screen but the repair guys told me this phone for the cost is really well built with easy repairability

I quit using a case months ago (cheap crappy pleather wallet case I bought for it just irritates me, and my wife pinched my clear soft gel case). No scratches on screen, one or two minor dents on the black plastic edges but you'd need a magnifying glass to notice them. Very pleased - my previous phone (black slate iPhone 5) got scratches on it if you as much as looked at it, and silver scratches on slate iodised aluminium looked bloody awful.

Have quie a few phones and tablets, every one since the Samsung Galaxy S3 has had a tempered glass screen protector installed.
I know this phone is supposed to be cheap in comparison with say, the note 5, but I don't have around $500AUD to throw away just because I cracked the screen, even $200 to repair is a kick in the nuts....
Those glass protectors have helped a lot of my phones survive intact.

I don't care if I don't notice the scratches when the screen is on.

For those hoping miracles on gorilla glass:
Diamonds only can be scratched by diamonds
Sapphire only can be scratched by sapphire or diamonds
Gorrillaglass can be scratched by the diamonds, sapphire or whatever is harder than GorillaGlass, this is the rule.
Where you can find things harder than gorilla glass?
a Jewelry ? sure,
the floor? - maybe, some dirt particles actually are are sand, in some places sand is composed by limestone someties harder than gorillaglass.
your pockets? very likely specially if you have two cellphones, the sapphire cover on the lens camera easy can scratch the gorillaglass on other phone, also some pencils have diamond particles on its graphite, further DIAMONDS PARTICLES ARE VERY COMMON, SINCE SiNTETIC DIAMONDS ARE USE AS ABRASIVE ON MANY DRILLING TOOLS.
So, protect your gorillaglass if you hate scratches, harder is not warranty to be invulnerable.
