Looking to buy an s8 to root off of CL or ebay or the like, and was wondering how to check the bootloader revision # on the S8 Snapdragon so that I know it's v1 or v2 (rootable).
Thanks!
Your bootloader revision is part of the baseband build number of the firmware you are currently running.
Start from the right and count 5 characters back. That is the bootloader revision for the firmware. So if the full build number is: G950USQS2BQL1.......that 2 is the bootloader revision for the firmware. If it's new, I think it will come with bootloader 1, if used, ask for that info.

UPDATE: New information found/needs finding
Dell Venue Pro fw - XDA wiki
Introduction:
I dont own a VP but I do own/have access to every other 2nd gen dell device (2nd gen as by from dell, not the cpus of course)
The VP is the only one I have no info on, and it's also the only wp7 device in the entire lineup.
I've also never used an actual wp7 device, closest I've come is the html5 demo they published earlier.
What I'm interested in:
The version numbers from about/version screen or whatever it's called for officially updated devices. I know you can manually/force update the OS itself but that's not what I'm interested in.
What to report:
Code:
OS Version:
Carrier:
Firmware version:
Radio version:
Bootloader version:
I've already got a few common versions listed, dell uses mostly the same type of versioning scheme as they do for android.
'Carrier' should be what your phone reports and not what your actual carrier is.
Facts:
0xx - Prototype roms(?) (though there's many wp7 launch ones that had this, esp bought from the MS stores)
1xx - Early WP7
2xx - Pre-NoDo(?)/NoDo and newer
The bootloader seems to be unchanged from launch, and the baseband has a single update, possibly during the 1xx -> 2xx changeover.
xxxx.15xx.xxxx.xxx -> 2.2.50.15
xxxx.18xx.xxxx.xxx -> 2.2.50.18
doesnt seem like a coincidence.
These are of course for the firmwares themselves, and not the main OS. From what I've read the OS itself is somewhat independent of the firmware bundle.
The main reason that all devices arnt immediately updated is due to the manu confirming their firmware works/possibly needs updates(?)
Released OS/firmware bundles have been tested, you can force update the OS and hope it works with the already installed firmware(?)

'Region type' should actually be carrier, by what i've seen i'm going to guess yours will say GENERIC-EU?
I'll fix the first post

I was wondering if there was a GENERIC-US one, I havnt seen any screenshots of one on google, thanks! I'm guessing there's also a ATT-US one, just havnt seen an actual one yet.

that's not a carrier code. he's saying his phone is sim unlocked.
here's a partial list of carrier codes
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20259723&postcount=184
Never locked unbranded UK device:
OS Version:7.10.7740.16

Bootloader version:7.27.1.0
Chip SOC version: 0.36.2.0
It not have wi-fi tehering.
Unlocking it changes the displayed code now?
I assumed it remained the same as on the venue the code determines the available features (ie mainly if tethering is enabled or not, though the vp does not have working tethering by default regardless(?) )
On the venue unlocking has no visble effect except for the fact you can insert a foreign sim card. I'm assuming a locked to unlocked att one would still display att?
I'm going to go on a limb and assume that ALL vps have the same bootloader, i've yet to see one that isnt 7.27.1.0 from fw vers 029 to 219
Wetherx: as unlike the android dell's there's no way for me to check the update paths of the various combinations, are you intentionally on 7720 and not 7740 or has it not offered the upgrade for you?
If it were the venue I could check by navigating over to:
Code:
http://mobileupdate.dell.com/?version=GTOUB1A132500
as 325 is the latest 00/retail rom for the it.
Such a concept doesnt exist in wp7. You would need to check on the device or in zune(?)
SIM unlock does not change carrier code. i'm using a tmo-us dvp on at&t, btw.
i never got the 7740 update prompt. as sad as it sounds, windows phone updates are handled by carrier, not mfr. as of now, phones need to be connected to zune via usb to check for updates.
OS Version: 7.10.8107.79
Carrier: GENERIC-US
Firmware version: 2250.1800.7720.219
Radio software version: 2.2.50.18
Bootloader version: 7.27.1.0
Apparently, the VP also has a hidden version string like all other 2/3rd gen Dell devices,
my new VP is: GLEOS2A421933_S
LEO is the qisda codename
2A4 is the submodel
219 is the FW version
33 is the tmo region
_S is AWS?
Dell Update Process
Contains information if anyone is actually interested.
If any other users could report in their version string i'd be interested.
I'm aware of dell having to recall VP launch models because of bad wifi, I wonder if all VPs are 2A4 devices.
The normal process is that submodel numbers never change unless they are hardware changes (ie the Streak 7 is the only one that has currently has multiple submodels because they physically contain different modem models for each region, others like the Streak 5 have the same modem, they only have different amps for each region/cell band groupings)
If it were the Venue, it would be
-AWS
-US
on the end of the version string to determine the 3g varient, my VP is "_S"
I wonder what a US model would be, and if EU AWS models are the same
I'm guessing from previous knowledge:
00: US-generic unlocked VPs?
20: EU-generic unlocked VPs?
30: US-generic unlocked VPs?
31: At&t locked/branded VPs?
33: Tmo locked/branded VPs (I can confirm this one)
An equivilent Venue rom of age and type would be thus:
GTOUB1A132500-US
TOU is the qisda codename (toucan)
1A1 is the submodel (all V's are 1A1)
325 is the rom version (a 2.2.2 rom)
00 is the region (unbranded/retail)
-US is the cell varient (ie at&t bands UMTS850/1900)
If anyone is willing to go into the EM app and check it's a very simple thing to do:
Open the dialer
Type "##634#" (without the quotes)
Select Phone Information
The "SW version" string contains what I'm interested in
FW Version
OEM Version (or rather it's equivilent from android to WP7)
Carrier version
Afterwards the EM app may appear in your app list, it was always on your device but was merely hidden. I would not recommend removing it.

mine DVP too has the same version. mine is a unlocked DVP TMO-US
so under security it shows Unlock
Ah so it might be the lock code and not simply the carrier version.
1. Hello XDA, how would we go about determining what bootloader version the S7 or S7 Edge has (v2 or v3)
2. Does it require root to do this?
3. Can we determine bootloader versions by looking at the download screen?
Thank you
Edit 1:
would the below pic show the bootloader version? would B2 mean bootloader version 2 and B4 mean bootloader version 4?
Kinda late but at least a solution.
If you have a S7, the 5 number of the firmware version is the bootloader version. Check the website updato if you want to download or find any samsung firmware, or type in TWRP's console in recovery "getprop ro.bootloader"
He is on a snapdragon model...no TWRP. Your five number is the fifth digit from the end of the firmware version. But B2 and B4 refer to the bootloader binary version numbers. All US Carriers are on B4, except for Sprint.
He has the 'U' model or firmware flashed on his phone in the picture. Phone still needs to be unlocked, but he did write a nice guide for enabling additional LTE bands.
Here I discovered a new firmware for N5120:

PDA Version N5120XXSDQC1
CSC Version N5120OXXDNE1
PHONE Version N5120XXDNE4
Region NEE
Country Nordic countries
Build Date 30.03.2017
Changelist 1600517
OS KitKat
OS Version 4.4.2
Updated OTA:
new kernel and new security patch:
I am tired of dealing with SGH-I467's (AT&T only) locked bootloader. It makes installing custom ROM impossible. Now I'm thinking of buying and swapping in a mainboard from SGH-I467M (the Canadian version is bootloader UNLOCKED) or GT-N5120 (international version).
1. will this give me an unlocked bootloader without any other hardware change? I know I probably have to swap in a new modem code, but with an unlocked bootloader, any software change is possible
2. will the mainboard from GT-N5120 work in a SGH-I467? I know SGH-I467M's mainboard will for sure work in SGH-I467 because the only difference is the latter has a locked bootloader. Unfortunately, SGH-I467M's mainboard is hard to come by, but GT-N5120's is still available. Although the LTE bands in N5120 are overseas and SGH-I467 has AT&T bands, are they really different hardware, or same hardware with different software?
[Updated Feb 9th, 2018] Now I don't think it is doable at all to download SGH-I467 or SGH-I467M's modem code to a GT-N5120 hardware even if the bootloader is unlocked. I have a Canadian Galaxy S4, SGH-I337M (bootloader unlocked, unlike the AT&T version). Since my carrier is U.S. T-Mobile, I tried to download T-Mobile's modem to my S4 thinking it may give me better data rate. Odin prompted Fail! (Auth) and S4 showed Secure Check Fail! After some googling, I realize regardless of unlocked bootloader, these phones/tablets are engineered to check if authorized modem codes are being flashed. I know for sure my S4's bootloader is unlocked because I have installed TWRP for recovery.
Since GT-N5120 has international frequency bands, turning it into a North American tablet is DOA if another carrier's modem code cannot be installed. If anyone questions why a custom ROM can be flashed to a phone/tablet with unlocked bootloader, it is because a custom ROM seldom comes with the modem code!

That firmware is almost year old now..
I have no issues with my at&t i467, it runs and does everything my modded Note 8.0 does. Except a lack of custom recovery, and kernel. All you need is to learn a bit on simple file managment and permissions, while plugging away with dropping in system files and libs. I guess I will be the only one here with a modded out yank i467 that works on EU wifi channels.
I had a few threads on libs and apps, along with settings config files to customise on your own. But everybody acts like it's complex trig. Heck i hardly knew much about android when I bought my tablets, and in a years time peeps think i am a god. WTFF!

Great idea! Thank you. Says who one has to do all mods during the Odin time and get rejected by this locked bootloader? I will definitely look up your threads on how to swap out these files post boot.

I tried to look up these posts, but you have a lot of them! If you don't mind, can you suggest the key words needed to filter them out? Thank you
I am unsure whether I need to change my firmware or not. I have the galaxy s8 at&t carrier unlocked variant. about 3 months ago I flashed the unlocked firmware on the phone so I could get updates. I'm using Walmart family mobile which is (MVNO) of Tmobile. I want to continue getting updates without bricking my phone. What should I do?
https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-note8-bootloader-odin/
update to CRB1 from https://samsung.firmware.science/
My baseband version is G950U1UES2AQL1
My model number is SM-G950U1
I don't see either as an option on the link. any help?
Sorry for a noob question. I haven't been here since my days with an S3.
I pick up an supposedly unlocked G950U on ebay a week or so ago. When I got it It had G950USQU3CRE9 from 6/18 firmware installed. I put in my Mint Mobile SIM and it worked and had no carrier bloatware, but would fail when doing a manual update. Strangely in settings the Service provider SW ver. section was absent. I downloaded at installed via Odin G950USQU5CRL2. Magically the Service provider SW ver is now in settings.
Trying a manual update it downloaded and installed G950USQU5CSA4. SWEET. But I'm confused why I recieved that update.
Under Service provider SW ver it now lists;
SAOMC_SM-950U_OYN_XAS_OO_0075
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
XAS/XAA/VZW
Who am I getting the update for? Sammobile doesn't list SA4 for CSC's XAS (unknown) or XAA (unlocked) but does for VZW
The Phone ID app lists my product code as SM-G950UZVAXAA
Am i getting the update for verizon but a XAA unbloated one? or what? I would think XAS would be my active CSC.
Confused .... My last time playing with phones CSC didn't exist and I can't figure it out.
Also, I would love to flash the G950U1 firmware but there isn't a version a current as SA4, even the pie betas, and concerned about a brick.
Any help in understanding would be GREATLY appreciated.

Xaa is unlocked firmware. I think xas is sprint. But the third vzw means your sales code is verizon so you should be getting updates from them. You can use sammobile or updato get the latest and flash home csc with your sim in and it should go to your carrier. 5th digit from end is bootloader revision thats what you have to pay attn to. As long as you get revision 5 firmware ypur gold. We have locked bootloaders so you cant really brick with odin. You have to flash a rev 5 combination file then the u1 firmware which is the unlocked firms
So what i think is you got a sprint phone with unlocked firmware but with verizon as a sales code for end user if im not mistaken... If thats the case it is most def unlocked sim wise.
I have a couple of noob questions as well Since I'm new to CSC era...
Got s8 950U and was not able to update FW for several months now due to no functioning OTA and Odin failed as I lack the combination file knowledge. My phone appears to be for Hong Kong market with Snapdragon and I use it in Europe.
1) Is it possible to unlock OTA by switching CSC to local provider? Not sure if 950U is even supported in Europe CSCs? What if I pick XAA instead of local one?
2) Any idea how to update to Pie and unlock OTA/Samsung Pay/Secure folder etc.? What is the correct formula to understand which combination file to use before flashing latest Pie 950U1 XAA ROM G950U1UEU5DSC1?
Nobody able to help at least slightly?
i have the same problem with my s8 , thar has csc of hong kong tgy and won't me let download the last updates also i can't open samsung health secure folder s pay ect....any solution ??! ,, thanks in advance
I have the same issue. Phone name is SM-G950U but CSC is TGY (Hongkong). It can not be updated via OTA and I don't know what is its correct CSC.
