Mi A1 | Install Custom ROM | Without Root - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Hi Guys,
Is it possible to install a custom ROM without installing Magisk?
Nowadays it is not possible to use many banking apps(Tez etc.) with a rooted device.
I have tried with AOSP extended but the device was not booting without Magisk !!
Somebody, please help.
Thanks in advance :good:

As far as I know, custom ROM will not pass Safetynet without Magisk, so even if you boot it up, Tez isn't probably going to work anyway. Try for example this instead https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-tez-hider-t3796567

Rom for Samsung Tab A SM-T285

Hi People
Unfortunately not had any replies to my 1st post about what bloatware and preinstalled apps that I am able to remove from the device after rooting it.
Could I try from another Angle could anyone provide a link for a custom rom that I could try and install which would remove it by installing a custom rom?
Sorry guys but I'm desperate to get the crap off and free up the device storage!
Thanks
Paul

If you goal is to free up space just removing preinstalled apps won't help that much since you are only modifying the system partition which is fixed and readonly. As for custom ROMs, since you are a T285 user you have the benefit of a wide range of ROMs to choose from, for 5.1.1 you have the tinker edition roms, on the other hand the 6.0.1 (CM, Omnirom) and 7.1.1 (Lineage, Omnirom) based roms allow adoptable storage, of course the 6.0.1 and 7.1.1 roms have problems just take note of the issues and problems each build has and see if it works for you. Just take a look at the ROMs and custom kernel section of this forum.
Thanks Jedid, would these roms remove bloatware upon installation? Which would you say is the most stable? Are they installed using Odin?

when you "install" these ROMs they actually replace the entire system and boot partition of your device, so they don't remove anything they replace it. In theory the Tinker Edition variant is the most "stable" as it is just stock with some apps removed. For non-stock based firmware (CM, LineageOS, Omnirom) I guess CM-13 has the most hardware support. Yes you use Odin to install these.
You wouldn't have clear step by step instructions to follow would you please? New to this it is rooted twrp and supersu.
Also could you provide the Rom on the tablet as it is now incase ever what to return it to normal.
Hi Guys I managed to install the Tinker Edition 5.1.1, it's still got kids mode Hancom, Samsung smart manager still on there? I don't seem to be able to move to SD card I thought you could on this rom? If not could anyone assist please?

Only 6.0.1 and 7.1.1 based roms like CM, Lineage and OmniRom support adoptable storage. For Tinker Edition use root apps like Link2SD to move to SD card.
With links2sd can you move any apps on the device to SD card? Are there any that do need to be left on the device?
After turning on the device today I don't seem to be connect to my wifi. Saying failed to obtain IP address also won't connect using tether from my phone either. All other devices in the household are connected fine, and there were no issues prior to installing Tinker edition rom last night. Can anyone help please? How to rectify? I've switched off router rebooted I've switched off device and still won't connect?
Sorted problem, the IP address needed changing!
If I have now installed custom rom after rooting my SM -T285 how do I put it back to how it was from new with no root or custom rom, none of the apps like sky sports mobile virgin media anywhere will work on a rooted device!

you can download the stock rom from sammobile, updato and then flash using odin
Would that over ride any custom rom then? Or would have to unroot after installing stock rom

Custom roms without magisk

Hello, could someone explain me why magisk is necessary for custom roms for our device? When bootloader boots custom kernel it should boot rest of the system without any problems but it bootloops even before bootanimation
I also need custom ROM without Magisk. Is any Oreo custom ROM supports SuperSU?
RR-O ROM+Gapps goes to bootloop without Magisk and RR-O ROM+(Gapps)+SuperSU goes to Bootloader mode.
RR-O ROM+Gapps+Velocity Kernel boots & works, but RR-O ROM+Gapps+Velocity Kernel+SuperSU goes to Bootloader mode.
So anyone can please help for any Oreo custom ROM + Gapps + any rooting app (SuperSU, Lineage addonSU, phh's SuperUser).

Have you figured it out yet? If not here, we go...
A Custom ROM is to give you 100% control, it's the point, and to have 100% control, the phone needs to be rooted to access the system.
In Linux, 'Root' means, what the Admin is in Windows...
Kind of pointless to install a custom rom, with limited control, of course you can root a stock rom too.

Not necessarily. Custom roms may have up to date security patches vs out of date stock roms on older phones. And custom roms may have extra functionality especially on bare bones stock rom like the MiA1.

Yes of course all the 'Bells & Whistles' I didn't mention... But that's not the reason for rooting, which is what the OP asked...
Anyhow Custom ROMS give us many things, but it's about being in Control...
Cheers

You will need to install Magisk to pass safetynet. Install Lineage with Magisk 16.0 and it should be highly stable. Your grandparents should be able to use the phone without issue, and you can update it once every couple of months and it should be fine.
This is what I do for my mothers phone. She only gets updates once every 2 to 3 months at that's it. No issues yet.
Another option is to return to stock Recovery and relock the bootloader
Edit: Do not install any rom from another phone or you will brick it.
thanks for the prompt response. I will try what you suggested. Appreciated!
ASOP extended passed
I checked my installed rom ASOP extended with the blackscreen kernel and it passes the safety net test I don't have root or majisk installed.

Worst rooting experience ever had

Hey guys,
The rooting experience becomes worst these days..
Everyone wants a great rooting experience.. but it can't ?
First I installed lineage OS on device.. and I encountered by so many bugs in it.. then I switched to RR ROM.. it's the worst ROM I ever had.. it failed to install Magisk and Su.. Omg!
After failed to install Magisk.. I decided install lineage OS and I installed stock gapps all seems well but at the end the xposed framework and BusyBox could not be installed in magisk
Did you know that those ROMS are treble, and they require different modded magisk and different TWRP?

Why don't you try to learn about how to do these things first, instead of just trying everything, there are 1000s of people who are very much satisfied with the "rooting experience", so instead of everyone being wrong, don't you think you are not doing things correctly. And there's no need to open threads to express your opinion in Guides forum. If you are having trouble with any of the ROMs, ask in their forum, many are happy to help you.

Current situation of SafetyNet

Hi there, I have an international Mi A1 that has never been modded (stock Aug. 2020 upd.).
I'm interested to switch to a custom rom, but after reading some articles about the strengthening of SafetyNet (hardware fingerprint?) I desisted.
So before I go into this operation I'd like to know if there are any problems with banking apps (that I need) and other apps that uses those APIs. I'm not interested in root permissions, so if I had to give them up in order to be sure to bypass SafetyNet, it would be fine with me.
Uh, another stupid question (sorry!), could I lock the bootloader again once the custom rom is installed (I know that SafetyNet check this, correct me if I am wrong)?
Thank you all for your attention!
Up
You can flash any android 10 rom for mia1 and safteynet shouldn't be a concern, rooting is not necessary in order to use custom roms. I myself only use custom roms for the latest android version and features without the need of rooting.
Sent from my Mi A1 using Tapatalk
i'm using Lineage OS 17 official from 7-8 months and its also rooted with Magisk and Safetynet check always passed. i use Upi apps and Netflix app but didn't face any problem
You should never ever lock bootloader after installing custom roms, it will send the device into bootloop.
