Hello, could someone explain me why magisk is necessary for custom roms for our device? When bootloader boots custom kernel it should boot rest of the system without any problems but it bootloops even before bootanimation
I also need custom ROM without Magisk. Is any Oreo custom ROM supports SuperSU?
RR-O ROM+Gapps goes to bootloop without Magisk and RR-O ROM+(Gapps)+SuperSU goes to Bootloader mode.
RR-O ROM+Gapps+Velocity Kernel boots & works, but RR-O ROM+Gapps+Velocity Kernel+SuperSU goes to Bootloader mode.
So anyone can please help for any Oreo custom ROM + Gapps + any rooting app (SuperSU, Lineage addonSU, phh's SuperUser).

Have you figured it out yet? If not here, we go...
A Custom ROM is to give you 100% control, it's the point, and to have 100% control, the phone needs to be rooted to access the system.
In Linux, 'Root' means, what the Admin is in Windows...
Kind of pointless to install a custom rom, with limited control, of course you can root a stock rom too.

Not necessarily. Custom roms may have up to date security patches vs out of date stock roms on older phones. And custom roms may have extra functionality especially on bare bones stock rom like the MiA1.

Yes of course all the 'Bells & Whistles' I didn't mention... But that's not the reason for rooting, which is what the OP asked...
Anyhow Custom ROMS give us many things, but it's about being in Control...

Hi there,
I'm using 4.4.2 wanamlite 2.9 rom on a i9505 with twrp 2.8.
Recently I encountered lot of problems like modem not working properly, rebooting, videos playing in slowmo, no sound etc... weird stuff...
I'm convinced to upgrade to (lets say) marshmallow (any custom rom) but I dunno how to do it properly. So here my questions:
- should I flash the stock rom and start again with root / custom rom etc? Or...
- should I upgrade with odin to stock modem and bootloader first, and after that install a custom rom via twrp? Which way is the correct one?
Btw. Should I upgrade to lolli, marsh or 7.x? Dunno whats better. I'm using touchwiz with xposed framework. I dont need tw but i find xposed very helpful. Any advice or link to guides?
Thanx
Upgrade the individual components. In your case, that means recovery, bootloader, and modem via Odin. Your copy of TWRP is ancient and the newer versions of Android need a newer version of TWRP to properly flash them. Once you've upgraded the components, download any Android 6.x ROM for your device - since you want Xposed - and flash it via TWRP. Android 7.x ROMs are available for your device, but Xposed does not work on them, and I don't expect it to work any time soon.

Thanx Stephron.
Yesterday I updated via .img the recovery (TWRP 3.2).
Now I'll look for bootloader and modem. Should I use the stock ones or are on xda some threads with better modems and bootloaders?
I think I'm going for resurrection remix or for some aosp. Any experience?
Best and happy new year .

Really appreciate your help folks. I didnt follow xda for a while and I felt obsolete somehow heheheh
The thing is I still have a somewhat old custom rom installed, so it's still 32-bits. Do I need to do something in particular before proceeding to flash any of the most recent 64-bits roms? Also, is it necessary to flash a 64-bits TWRP first?
I know this might actually be a silly question, but I just wanted to make sure before I end up with a bootloop or something. Thank you

Just update to the latest TWRP and clean flash any new ROM, don't just dirty flash it.
Use the official TWRP it supports both 64 and 32 bit
I recommend pixel experience and alize EAS
I seem to remember reading something some weeks ago that Samsung did something in their latest few updates for the S8+ that made it impossible to root them... is that true?
I'm running a SM-G955F - DTM here... and I'd rather keep it rooted. I'm using magisk to root my devices.
Any insights for me?
AFAIK, as long as if you have twrp installed, you can update to whatever you want.
you then can:
make a full backup with TWRP, and Samsung can't do anything against you just restoring the full backup (with the old update and root)
just flash whatever (custom)ROM you want.
You already are rooted, so OTAs aren't a thing for you. I don't know if there even exists a twrp flashable stock ROM, but why don't you just switch to a custom rom (with the newest updates installed)?
Honestly, the only custom rom i know of is lineage (nee cyanogenmod), and at least on my old S5 I found that the fingerprint reader does not work on cyanogenmod. also, anything that checks safetynet does not work either.

LieangeOS isn't even available for our device (infact it is, but unusable).
The custom roms available right now are all stock touchwiz roms with slight modifications (most of them aren't even necessary, thx to aroma).
Look over to a thread like the one from Renovate ICE, most of the time roms like these are based on the newest sources from Samsung with the newest security patch level. It has root (Magisk or SuperSu) included and also passes safetyNet.
As I said in the post above, you always can make a full twrp Backup, try a ROM like Renovate Ice and if you don't like it, just go back to your stock ROM in minutes. :fingers-crossed:
Hello everyone, i am new to the scene of the Mi A1, i bought the phone about 1 month ago and have been observing the forums, but i would like to ask some questions the community as i have not yet managed to find clear answers to the forums if someone can help me
1. If i root the phone is there a way to revert back to complete stock and get OTA's again?
2. In custom roms, can i get the stock camera working 100%?
3. Is there any custom rom that you recommend in terms of stability and battery life?
4. Are there any drawbacks to the custom rom scene?
5. Do you recommend the stock rom with a custom kernel or a custom rom altogether?
Thank you in advance for your answers, i hope that this thread might be useful to gather some questions altogether for anyone that might have wondered the same stuff as me
Hello,
1. There is a way to update OTA with magisk, but you will need you use magisk just as systemless, without touching system stuff. Alternative you can have root and just unroot everytime you want to update the ROM or you can manually flash the update... You can try this guide... https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/how-to/root-mi-a1-oreo-8-0-disabling-ota-magisk-t3728654
2. Stock camera works in custom ROMs, someone did a port somewhere in this forums... https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/themes/oreo-mia1-stock-rom-camera-app-custom-t3758543
3 and 4. Most of the custom ROMs are based on the same sources, LineageOS was one of the first "stable" ROMs so most of the ROMs are based on it, inheriting all of its bugs (haven't found a critical bug). I've tested a few ROMs and the mosts I liked in terms of battery life and stability are... LineageOS and Pixel Experience, you will need to test them out for yourself.
5. If you want to experience a more "stable" feeling stick to Xiaomi development, the latest stable version is 8.0 (with rumors of 8.1 coming soon). If you want latest Android updates and features go for a 8.1 custom ROM.
In my experience you will need to try all this things on your own, until you find a place where you feel comfortable with your phone. Just read guides on how to recover your phone from a bootloop and you are good to go!
I will answer only question number 4 because the guy above me said everything, by the way I prefer RR.
The drawbacks I found on custom roms are 2 for me...
1) Poor signal reception compared to stock
2) Sound quality is much better in stock compared to custom... (my opinion)
I am itching to root the device but to be honest the only thing i want is android 8.1 and a better battery, other than that i am pretty much satisfied with what i have. (and this is coming from someone that changed rom every other week on previous phones) Thank you for your replies, they were informative and greatly appreciated! I just hope Xiaomi updates the phone soon because it feels kinda outdated for an android one device

Hello.
First I'd like to say that i haven't ever tried anything like rooting my phone or custom roms so that you know what you're dealing with
Lately I've been bored with my s8 plus(SM-G955F). Was even considering buying a different phone but then i remembered reading about rooting and custom roms so i thought i might give it a try.
I've been reading a bit about rooting and roms but all the information and methods can be a little overwhelming for someone like me who doesn't really know what he's doing. Basically i need help.
While looking for custom rom i'd like to try i settled on renovate ice and i have some questions.
Do i need to root before flashing a custom rom or does the rom come rooted already?
From what i understand i have to start with installing TWRP with odin but what then? root or rom?
Basically if anyone would be kind enough to provide some links with steps i need to take to install that rom and root my device and not mess it up i'd be grateful.
In case you need it I'm on the latest OTA i've received.

Hello there , you do not need to root your to flash a custom rom . All you need is to backup your data for you own safety and flash TWRP recovery through Odin probram . Renovate ice is most famous and stable rom you can try . It has same UI as the stock rom . Little changes only you might wont see me . If you want to change UI you should for another rom . Also root comes with the rom inbuild, specificaly renovate ice has two options to chose, magisk or supersu . Personally i prefer Magisk before through this app ' you can' modify your system, its like xposed framework.

So I installed TWRP like in the video.
Everything seemed to work i had a clean install of stock ore with twrp. When i tried to boot into twrp i had the "only official binaries" bootloop. So i flashed a bootloader and i was stuck on galaxy s8+ screen. Went into download mode to flash stock firmware but can't do anything. Stuck in download mode and can't flash anything now... How do i get out of it?
Edit:
Ok. Found a way to flash the bootloader. now I'm back to "only official binaries" bootloop.
Edit 2:
Ok managed to get everything to work. At least it appears so for now.
Had to flash nougat firmware then installed twrp, rom and root and it worked.
I thought something went wrong because it was very laggy but after rebooting it seems okay. We'll see how it goes from here.
Gonna google it and try to fix it but if anyone has any ideas i'd be grateful
