So what does a kernel source release actually mean for the end user? I remember some time ago the Korean version got a kernel source release and nothing happened after that.

I want to know this too.
What does it mean the kernel sources are released? Did LG release them publicly for individuals to flashing their phones? Or was this a leaked internal file meant only for T-Mobile's technicians?

It's just to comply with GPL. They are required by the Linux kernel's license, so they must release the source code.

They did that previously for the VS995 (V20) as well. I wonder why...
I already got the H830 Source though, and I've started my stock Oreo kernel based on it.
Edit: Maybe it's because the naming was wrong. I remember they called it 20A, which would be wrong, it's 30A of course (10A MM, 20A N, 30A Oreo).
But then it should be up again quite quick I imagine. The VS995 though is still down after like 3 months.
theyve renamed the korean g5 source incorrectly as well and last I checked that was still up... but yes, I assume the h830 oreo 20a source was pulled due to the typo.
I plan on having the H830 KDZ, zips and images available in my codefire directory as soon as they become available.
will be interesting to see if they +1 ARB version... or make downgrading from oreo a pain (without root).
Oreo for V20 is in testing phase at T-Mobile. Hopefully G5 moves to testing soon.

The time between the release of the kernel source and actual update is about 40 days.

I don't think there is any correlation there at all.
They'd rather not even bother with releasing the code if they didn't have to, and usually they don't. Maybe once in a while, randomly they release, but seems they usually release the first at every android upgrade.
For instance; they released Oreo kernel source for many V20 back in jan-feb, and it took them 7-8 months to release Oreo for V20 from that point. That's a bit longer than 40 days...

saw it earlier.. finally posted zip and other files @ https://forum.xda-developers.com/tm...ck-h830-30c-zips-imgs-kdz-2018-08-01-t3845206
update is still anti-rollback v01 so downgrading is still possible to get to 20A if someone still needs root after losing twrp or something. UPPERCUT works when downgrading from 30c -> 20a. complete zip is over 2GB so those with encrypted data may need to use an external micro sdcard to flash it. those who can access /data in twrp should have no problems flashing it from /sdcard

I didn't update through OTA, was done through Uppercut. Still have the NRD90M Build number, not sure if that matters. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched the forums but maybe im not looking in the right places?
Whats the security patch date.
It would still be 90M if you had taken the OTA. LG releases incremental updates within builds for security patches and bug fixes which change the software versions i.e. from 10d to 10i. Currently, there is no way to root 10i. Interestingly enough, 10i is roll-back friendly, so if a TOT or KDZ (think of them as Google Factory Images to flash) existed of 10d (and an official one, the only kind you can flash properly to rollback, doesn't!) you could flash it and be able to root.

90M wouldn't matter in this case. If its security patch Dec. 1 it would most likely still work. Sprint came out with ZV5 and its Dec.1 dirtycow still works. Meaning Recowvery would work. The dirtycow patch is Dec. 5
The question is. Has anyone actually TRIED?

The update was put out specifically to patch the dirty cow exploit. It was released on the 21st, and while I haven't personally tried recowvery on I myself, I'm sure it won't work.

Are you on 10i? If so just give it a shot. worst case scenario nothing happens and you waste 5 minutes. best case you get root. We on sprint thought the same thing. Our ZV5(Dec.1 patch) update wasn't released until like the 15th.

You're right, it still works. I'm not really sure why everyone was reporting that it patches the exploit, but in any case, recowvery still works on 10i. Here's hoping an official TOT or KDZ comes out for rollback purposes when it eventually does get patched!

I did it via the 10i KDZ file and using LGUP and Uppercut. I had no choice i bricked my phone and lost twrp in the process. It was the only way to restore it.
I updated to 10i with LG Bridge and I grabbed the required .dll for LGUP, and I ran dirty cow again (you must use manual method), put SuperSU into the memory card.
I successfully entered TWRP and rooted 10i.
HI. The LG H918 10P OTA Update.zip has started pushing out. I received it on my phone last night. Can somebody provide a link to the LG KDZ for this update? I want to get on making a stock flashable zip ASAP.

I wonder if 10N was about to be rolled out then was aborted in favor of 10P. Strange since the Android version itself on both remain on the 7.0 branch. Hopefully the full fledge 10P build will emerge so devs can incorporate any fixes and what not into ROMs.
Edit: Looking at LG's kernel source distro looks like we also missed out on 10O as well as that's up right now. No kernel source as of now for 10P.

Until you posted this I swore at least the G6 and some of their recent lower tier phones were on 7.1.1 but alas they too are on 7.0 as well. So yeah the next major push LG will do is probably to whatever Android O will be (which is 8.0 the last I heard).

If your bootloader is unlocked can you try this:
https://www.howtogeek.com/240047/how-to-flash-twrp-recovery-on-your-android-phone/
Earlier H918 bootloaders (10d etc) did not have the FLASH command built in if I remember correctly. Maybe LG threw us a bone and included it in this bootloader.
Let me know. If would be great news.

If you do what my previous post says make sure as soon as you get into twrp that you FORMAT data and system (you will lose all data but it will unencrypt the rom) and flash the 10p stock rom, modem, and bootloader. If you don't, you may get a boot loop. You might get one anyway, this is risky. But you already unlocked your bootloader so it's obvious you are down for a little risk lol
God's speed sir. This could be huge
Guys I just noticed my phone downloading the software update. When I click on it it doesn't give my any info of what it is. As soon as it finishes the download I'll followup.

I hope it's Oreo ?
But honestly I hope it's a good functioning update.
LG has a lot to improve.
I'll followup.
Ok so that update is the security update only.

Google pixel unless they produce a note type stylus I'll pass although I did think about it.
Pixel maybe... Don't know. Let's see if it's discounted.
I think HTC is the only manufacture that started to be good with updates with their later flagship phones. I would even consider HTC before I consider LG again for phones.

1. Security update to one of the November patch sets.
2. This is the us996 unlocked that can be bootloader unlocked through LGs website and never needed dirtycow. AFAIK LGs unlocking processes should work fine. If for whatever reason you wanted to use dirtycow anyway its still possible to revert to the previous version since they didn't increment arb.

Hi,
In particular, I wanted to know if this update includes fixes for the KRACK and blueborne vulnerabilities. Do you know where I could find a changelog?
Also, if I do the OTA update do you know if it's going to wipe out TWRP? If so, I might what to wait for a zip file that I can install with TWRP from dimm0k or McNutnut:

Thanks. Just out of interest, why is this required (I thought the rom rewrote this anyway)

I assume this is mainly due to performance reasons and compatibility with newer custom firmware, but I do not know the full, technical story as to why that is the case. You're better off asking @kessaras and @steadfasterX for the answers

I have just noticed it says you need v29a firmware. If I download it from cypheros.co, does it still need v29a (I'm on v20g and would rather keep it so I can roll back to stock using a TWRP backup if I need to)

as far as i know if you have h815 that unlocks with .bin key from LG its bootloader its unlockable and it has antirollback 0 unless you have h815t or h815p thats locked bootloader and cant rollback i think
ask in thread and tell them if you have official unlocked boorloadre from LG. if you can roll back if you flash v29.

Thanks for the replies. Does Lineage OS also need this or is it only AOSCP

I assume any Nougat or Oreo, or PQRSTUVWXYZ ROM needs the latest available OEM bootloader/modem package, but don't act on this information unless you have asked around and those on this forum give the same answers.

Ok. Just out of interest, if I did flash a ROM that required a different bootloader and modem to the version I have, would it brick my phone or would it just not work properly

You CAN use an outdated modem partition. But you may encounter issues like camera crash, bad or no sound on voice calls, gps probs and / or sensor issues.
And depending on several things it's possible that it JUST WORKS FINE. I have tested even a LP modem partition with oreo (just a short test a while ago) and all was working here but issues can happen rarely.
A brick is possible but it will be a soft brick only which means the download mode is still there and you can flash a kdz to recover if needed. It either bootloops or a demigod bluescreen will happen on boot.

Thanks for confirming this. I want to keep as much of my phone stock as possible so it is easy to revert back to full stock if anything happens (this is my first proper venture into custom ROMs).
Also, is there any way to tell which version the rom requires by looking at the install files
Hi Please help me, i upgraded my OS to Oreo, and after that, i can recieve calls and messages but when im turning on my mobile data, it doesnt work. My APN is correct, any help
Thanks
And when did T-Mobile release Oreo for the H918?
From their support site:
Software version: Android 8.0 Oreo
Phase: Manufacturer Development
T-Mobile and the device manufacturer have agreed to support a new software update. The manufacturer is working on it.

If you have a rooted phone, and you installed boot and system from one of the models that currently does have Oreo, no -- your modem isn't going to work with their rild.

Maybe he means lineage?? The lineage build is Oreo right?
Could be, but that would make diagnosing the problem much easier if he would have said Lineage
If that is the case, I hope the OP made a backup of their EFS....

Could this be it?

Hi Brian...
I got my H918, Used your FWUL and LAFsploit.... (I think you are like a V20 rockstar...? thank gosh there's guys like you and websites like XDA to find you with!)
Got superV20 V2.1 on, I installed with
the option or the MK2000 kernel, although, I'm listed as kernel version 3.18.31. My softwaRe is 10t security patcheck level, March 1st, 2018.
In the last 2 days TMOBILE has been trying to push an Android System Update, of around 119.8 Mb to my phone.
(I don't know that it matters or is even noteworthy, but my provider is Virgin Mobile Canada, In B.C..)
It's asking for restart before installing, and I just keep closing it.
Could this be Oreo?

Nope just a security patch mostly, file size is to small to be the Oreo update

Is this going to be safe to install? I mean without losing root or risking my twrp install?

@wyldnewbie you said you are on 10t ... the OTA you are getting is 10u since that is the latest version.
Somewhere around here is a 10u flashable zip.
