Can someone explain the point of gestures control in android pie? I thought the point of it was to take up less space on the screen, but the pill never fades when scrolling so you have the exact same amount of space on the screen as when you didn't have swipe up on home enabled. The whole thing seems a bit pointless to me. It would make more sense if when scrolling through a website the pill would disappear and reappear if you swipped up
True
I'm what would be considered a Google Fan Boy. But you're 100% correct about this.
I had PP with BB10 OS there was excellent swype control
The only "advantage" over regular button navigation is you can swipe directly to the app drawer from any app. Other than that, yeah it doesn't add much but I still use it.

It is beyond stupid. And super ugly too. Home "Pill" in the middle, back button on the left, recents now added to the pill and nothing on the right...
Hey look guys, we got rid of one out of 3 buttons! Game changer!

You can change without root
Absolutely correct op. I don't get the gestures. I hate how the opening of the app draw is implemented. Big swing and a miss.
absolutely agree with you. saddens me to say that apple has implemented gestures much better.
Personally I don't mind it but the most useful thing I found was being able to switch between apps that are in the background easily. For those who haven't discovered it you swipe right from the pill. I hope they add more functionality to it.
I use 'OnePlus Gestures'. It does cost £1.99, but I find it an almost flawless execution of what gestures on Android should be particularly when used with 'Hide Nav Bar'.
The Google implementation of gestures is just bizarre!
I'm rooted. How can i move it?

No root needed to swap back key to the other side.
adb shell
settings put secure sysui_nav_bar "space,recent;home;back,space"
---------- Post added at 01:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:54 PM ----------
I am also using nova launcher and custom Navigation bar app so I have it set for the pill to disappear after a couple of seconds. Swipe up on bottom to make it come up.

To understand what they are doing and why they are doing it the way they are, you first have to understand one thing:
Google likes the navbar. They have no intention of ever getting rid of it. (They have mentioned this in their blog.)
So with that in mind...
What they are doing is adding functionality on top of the navbar. Instead of back-home-recents, you now have back and a pill. The pill doubles (quadruples?) as a recents button, as an app-drawer launcher, as a switch-to-last app button, and a scroll-through recents button (All of these things can be done with one touch, from any screen.)
The aren't getting rid of the navbar, they are not trying to free up screen realestate; they are trying to make the existing navbar that they love more functional
Love it, or hate it; I hope this helps someone better understand the reasoning behind the direction they are going.
I just upgraded to Pie (Full Image dirty install) and my Nav still has back/home/recents. Do I have to flip a switch or something to try out the new version? Also, related question, how do I do split-screen with Pie?
Related
Just wondering if you can do this with previous Android phones that have these buttons? I dunno why Google think they're a good idea when they just take up screen space. I'd love to have them function like the Windows task bar when I can hide it but it comes back when I put my mouse cursor over it. I'd love to have it functioning so like I do a gesture and I can make it appear and disappear and have a setting also to make it appear and disappear when I have just one finger down there, not two so I can pinch to zoom.
Thanx.
Please search before posting.

Don't know about bringing it up at will, but you can certainly hide them so that you get the entire screen for usage. Search for LMT Launcher. I personally prefer on screen buttons to the comparatively 'ugly' hardware/ capacitive ones. Allows for complete customization. Go through the threads on the i9250 forums and you'll see what I mean.
Has anyone else notices the gradient over the N4 navbar and status bar running lollipop that is not present on the N5 (and the N6 as far as i know)?

No, as I'm not looking to fix it...it doesn't bother me
I've now had my OP6T for 2 days and I'm starting to form some opinions around it. My first OP phone, came from the last couple Pixels & Nexus phones before that (also have a PH-1). I love lots of things, but hate a few things.
The things I'd like without rooting my unlocked phone:
1. Always-on Display (even if it eats 10% of the battery life!)
2. OnePlus navbar gestures in a way that doesn't suck for Google Assistant and doesn't break some apps by hiding the "Menu" buttons (TiBu is my only example off-hand). The long-press power button assistant shortcut is terrible, imo.
3. Google Feed/Discover instead of OnePlus Shelf
4. Figure out how to enable the "shrink the app to the icon on the home screen" animation I've seen online when you go from inside an app back to the home screen. I've not seen this work once on my phone (stock launcher)
5. Wallpaper on my home screen and lock screen to align properly (it's centered on my home screen but left-justified on my lock screen).
6. Clock to not blind me when I use the fingerprint scanner at night.
7. Dimmed fingerprint scanner animations (they also need to not blind me)
8. Hacked GCam app to use the telephoto lense when zooming
9. Let me use a gesture for lockdown mode, even if the screen is off
10. Remove leading zeros in clock hours (seriously, why is this a thing?)
Is any of this possible right now? I suspect a few things are my ignorance and there rest are just legitimate wishlist items.
Edit - SOLUTIONS!!
1. not yet fixed
2. None but I'm looking into a menu/overlay that pops up when you long-press the fingerprint sensor when unlocking your phone (keep it there for a few seconds after it unlocks). If I can find a way to activate this somehow while logged in, then we may have a solution!
3. not yet fixed
4. This works with OnePlus's custom navbar gestures enabled. This does not work with Pie gestures enabled.
5. not yet fixed
6. not yet fixed
7. not yet fixed

Wishlist that I'll never get on this phone:
1. Fast charging with normal USB-C chargers (whether it's USB-PD or just 15W charging, I don't care)
2. Stop screwing around with non-standard USB-C stuff (dongle & charger)
3. Smaller curve radiuses (for both the corners and the notch)
4. Volume/power button arrangement identical to the Pixels, mute switch on the left side
Things that I very much appreciate:
1. Tap to wake
2. Gestures, even with the screen off
3. Fingerprint sensor *always* works in the dark, even if it blinds me
4. Status bar icon customization
5. The Settings cog is available after a single swipe down of my notifications (for some reason Pie hides this by default until you do the double swipe)
6. Silence switch
7. Perfectly-installed screen protector
8. GCam port, complete with Night Sight, working!
Regarding item 2, I leave the standard nav keys on, and use the OnePlus Gestures app at the same time. So I have programmable gestures and the stock nav keys.

Ahh, I was hoping to gain the screen real estate by using gestures and no nav bar. That would certainly solve the problem but at that point, I'd rather use the non-ideal Pie gestures.

Just set it up and the animations still have the huge latency and things don't drag around with my finger. Am I doing something wrong?
1. Classic nav bar enabled
2. Installed OnePlus Gestures + the Hide Navbar app
3. Granted WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
4. Disable navbar from the Hide Navbar app
5. Enabled third-party gestures: (swipe up on sides to Back, swipe up in middle to Home, long swipe in middle to Recents)
When doing this, if I do the long swipe up in the middle, the front app doesn't move around with my finger like it does with the stock OP-style gestures (there's a ~2 second lag in some animations).
If I change step #1 to use OP-style gestures and otherwise follow the same steps, then that problem goes away but the third-party guestures don't really seem to work (long swipe on sides won't open Assistant, for example, so I believe it's just using first-party gestures still).

Hello World!
I'm using the stock OP6 launcher, and it's fantastic. But I have a quick question. Is there any way to modify the launcher to shrink the space between the dock and the navbar ? I'm rooted.
I attached a picture to be more conclusive.
Thank you for your time.

Changing the home screen folder display would be great too. You can change icon packs all day but are stuck with a grey circle folder.

Doesn't fix the issue. The guestures, while good, are the portal between you and what your interacting with on the glass and need to be perfect, which the OnePlus one's aren't. The y miss animations, are buggy and then the keyboard is lower. I'm using buttons because while guestures are better they just need to be 100 per cent polished otherwise it ruins interacting with the phone.

I've been using OnePlus gestures for several weeks. Took a couple days to get used to it since I'm used to the buttons but I can say I have never once had them mess up. I still occasionally just tap the bottom right corner to try and go back though. Many years of buttons makes it a strange transition, but imo they are perfect.

I know gesture navigation in 3rd party launchers is suppose to work on oneui 2.5 on note 20 ultra. But it doesn't work very well at all.
1. Swiping up to get to recent apps is not a very smooth animation, but worse is that the current app gets positioned in the middle rather than to the right, so quick switching is cumbersome.
2. Trying to use the swipe right on the bottom for previous app is a buggy mess. It's unsmooth and pops in the recent view briefly. Often you get stuck and cannot use the app you switched to, needing to swipe back and switch back and forth to get normal operation again. After trying to use these swipe right/left gestures to quick switch apps, you cannot scroll through the recent apps view quicky anymore, one swipe always mean moving one app to the left or right no matter how strong the swipe. This stays until rebooting.
It's a buggy mess, is there any way to fix this? I'm using Nova, but the problems are the same on all 3rd party launchers.
it might be improved with Android 11

Oh. I'll have a look at lawn chair and compare the experience. Seems strange how there would be different results in different launchers. Trier Microsoft launcher and it worked the same. I'll make a video of the issues if they turn out being the same on lawn chair.

I don't have any issues so you can give it a try and see how it goes. Yes, its all in the good lock app.
But animations are part of the launcher so its totally normal that you won't get the same effect from a third party launcher. My gestures work fine with Nova. No issues here. Animations are different but its a different launcher so that's to be expected too.

Looks interesting but there are missing features like a swiping left or right to move between previous apps, also there's usually issues specific to this kind of solution. Haven't tried it though. It may be a viable alternative.
This app compare with the other has an advantage, that you set up the app how you want to. if you want to have left or right to go back to last apps you can do it. Like for example I have it for mine
Bottom center click
Go home
Bottom center click and hold
Google Assistant
Bottom center swipe up
Recent apps
Bottom center swipe left
Go back to last app
Bottom left swipe up
Last app
Bottom right swipe up
Recent apps
Buttom Left and right side of screen
Go Back
Top Left and right side of screen
Lauch apps
All but the buttom center are transparent
I'm using a combination of Nova gestures and One Hand Operation+, set system navigation to buttons, double tap navigation bar to hide system buttons.
Swipe up from bottom and nav / home button appears.
Use side swipe in OHO+ for back and switcher.
Use nova on home screen, swipe down for app search, swipe up for switcher, double tap home screen for notification / quick settings.

One Hand Operation+ works very well and uses very little battery.
