That's the SPerry xt1766? You can unlock the bootloader. I might be wrong, but you should be able to do it right thru the Motorola website:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-b
Of course.... you lose all your data when you unlock your bootloader, so back it up

Right.
You have to do what it says to do. Enable Oem Unlock in Developer Options.
To make Developer Options appear, go to Settings... About Phone... and tap on the Build Number repeatedly (7 times) until Developer Options appears, and enable it.
Then go to that Developer Options, and you'll see the 5th one down is OEM Unlocking. Enable it.
Ta da.
Now go and do the fastboot oem unlock thing.
Thanks a lot Man.
Thanks a lot man, would you please be specific about the “oem unlock thing”?

cm7 no, and that'll never happen. Any custom rom that requires a different kernel will not work on a locked bootloader. That being said, there are some roms that will work on locked bootloaders but are few and far between. I'd suggest using the search button

The best rom on a locked bootloader currently has the be Gin2JellyBean. It should be on the first page on the development section.

Yea but that only works if it came from the factory as being able to unlock it, you need to check in your service menu if it says bootloader unlock allowed: yes, if it says no then its pay only

This is a video tutorial for my guide that can be found here, i felt it was best to make a new thread to keep the thread clean.
Text Guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662199
OK so i was looking around for a easy to use guide i could refer someone to and couldn't find one so i decided to create 1.
With this method you wont need to download the android SDK and instead can download a small package of files that i will upload. this saves around 1-2GB of bandwidth.
Firstly we should confirm your phone can be unlocked. To check if your phone can be rooted (most likely if it is not branded to 3, Vodafone etc then it can be)
Go to the phone dialer
Tap*#*#7378423#*#* then a service menu should pop up,
Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. if it says boot loader unlock allowed then you are good to go.
if it says not allowed or no then you will need to pay to have the boot loader unlocked.
Now we need to get your IMEI to do this type in the dialer *#06# another window will appear with your IMEI number write this down somewhere as you will need it later.
OK so now that you know your phone BL can be unlocked we will need to download and extract these files

You have to install fastboot then: just download the ADT and install platform and platform-tools.
It will create a folder under C:\Programs\Android\AndroidSDK\platform-tools (don't remember id it's correct lol, it's been a while since I used fastboot lol).
There you'll find adb and fastboot (make sure you follow the instruction under Sony's development site to install drivers and unlock your bootloader).

There is, theorically. Sziraqui was talking about it in his unofficial bootloader unlocking method.
And Xniperf, there is a theory that ASUS tracks if device was unlocked by serial number, so, unless you haven't used an app from ASUS, relocking your bootloader won't help you to recover your warranty.

Uh, yes, and I found out by the worst way possible. Since everyone was saying that re-locking the bootloader was impossible, I had the great idea to go to fastboot and type in "fastboot oem lock".
What happened you ask? The bootloader was locked... I had some trouble unlocking it again.

If you just flashed Oreo, then it is beta.
Typically you don't lock the boot loader with beta software running.
If something goes wrong, and it can, you potentially won't be able to flash a downgrade.
I understand your reasoning, but it's normally a bad idea.
Although, essential doesn't instruct you to unlock the bootloader to install the Oreo beta builds.
I side loaded mine through the stock recovery and only unlocked a few weeks afterwards.
